The positive Grassmannian, the amplituhedron, and cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ is the subset of the real Grassmannian where all Plücker coordinates are nonnegative. It has a beautiful combinatorial structure as well as connections to statistical physics, integrable systems, and scattering amplitudes. The amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ under a positive linear map $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^{k+m}$. We will explain how ideas from oriented matroids, tropical geometry, and cluster algebras shed light on the structure of the positive Grassmannian and the amplituhedron.

On the Holt-Klee Property for Oriented Matroid Programming
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Holt-Klee theorem says that the graph of a $d$-polytope, with edges oriented by a linear function on $P$ that is not constant on any edge, admits $d$ independent monotone paths from the source to the sink. We prove that the digraphs obtained from oriented matroid programs of rank $d+1$ on $n+2$ elements, which include those from $d$-polytopes with $n$ facets, admit $d$ independent monotone paths from source to sink if $d \le 4$. This was previously only known to hold for $d\le 3$ and $n\le 6$.

Real phase structures on matroid fans and matroid orientations
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc. 106.4 (2022) pp. 3687-3710 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of real phase structure on rational polyhedral fans in Euclidean space. Such a structure consists of an assignment of affine spaces over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ to each top dimensional face of the fan subject to two conditions. Given an oriented matroid we can construct a real phase structure on the fan of the underlying matroid. Conversely, we show that from a real phase structure on a matroid fan we can produce an orientation of the underlying matroid. Thus real phase structures are cryptomorphic to matroid orientations. The topes of the orientated matroid are recovered immediately from the real phase structure. We also provide a direct way to recover the signed circuits of the oriented matroid from the real phase structure.

Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids: Symmetric Cycles in the Hypercube Graphs. V
We consider decompositions of topes of the oriented matroid realizable as the arrangement of coordinate hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^{2^t}$, with respect to a distinguished symmetric $2\cdot 2^t$-cycle in its hypercube graph of topes $\boldsymbol{H}(2^t,2)$. We seek interpretations of such decompositions in the context of subset families on the ground set $E_t:=\{1,\ldots,t\}$ and of the families of their blocking sets, in the context of clutters on $E_t$ and of their blockers.

A SAT attack on higher dimensional Erdős--Szekeres numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A famous result by Erdős and Szekeres (1935) asserts that, for all $k,d \in \mathbb{N}$, there is a smallest integer $n = g^{(d)}(k)$ such that every set of at least $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in general position contains a $k$-gon, that is, a subset of $k$ points which is in convex position. In this article, we present a SAT model based on acyclic chirotopes (oriented matroids) to investigate Erdős--Szekeres numbers in small dimensions. To solve the SAT instances we use modern SAT solvers and all our unsatisfiability results are verified using DRAT certificates. We show $g^{(3)}(7) = 13$, $g^{(4)}(8) \le 13$, and $g^{(5)}(9) \le 13$, which are the first improvements for decades. For the setting of $k$-holes (i.e., $k$-gons with no other points in the convex hull), where $h^{(d)}(k)$ denotes the minimum number $n$ such that every set of at least $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in general position contains a $k$-hole, we show $h^{(3)}(7) \le 14$, $h^{(4)}(8) \le 13$, and $h^{(5)}(9) \le 13$. Moreover, all obtained bounds are sharp in the setting of acyclic chirotopes and we conjecture them to be sharp also in the original setting of point sets. As a byproduct, we verify previously known bounds. In particular, we present the first computer-assisted proof of the upper bound $h^{(2)}(6)\le g^{(2)}(9) \le 1717$ by Gerken (2008).
The m=2 amplituhedron and the hypersimplex: signs, clusters, triangulations, Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The hypersimplex $Δ_{k+1,n}$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map. It is a polytope of dimension $n-1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Meanwhile, the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ is the projection of the positive Grassmannian $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ into $Gr_{k,k+2}$ under a map $\tilde{Z}$ induced by a matrix $Z\in \text{Mat}_{n,k+2}^{>0}$. Introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes, it is not a polytope, and has dimension $2k$. Nevertheless, there seem to be remarkable connections between these two objects via T-duality, as was first noted by Lukowski--Parisi--Williams (LPW). In this paper we use ideas from oriented matroid theory, total positivity, and the geometry of the hypersimplex and positroid polytopes to obtain a deeper understanding of the amplituhedron. We show that the inequalities cutting out positroid polytopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n}$ under the moment map -- translate into sign conditions characterizing the T-dual Grasstopes -- images of positroid cells of $Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n}$ under $\tilde{Z}$. Moreover, we subdivide the amplituhedron into chambers, just as the hypersimplex can be subdivided into simplices, with both chambers and simplices enumerated by the Eulerian numbers. We prove the main conjecture of (LPW): a collection of positroid polytopes is a triangulation of $Δ_{k+1, n}$ if and only if the collection of T-dual Grasstopes is a triangulation of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$ for all $Z$. Moreover, we prove Arkani-Hamed--Thomas--Trnka's conjectural sign-flip characterization of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$, and Lukowski--Parisi--Spradlin--Volovich's conjectures on $m=2$ cluster adjacency and on generalized triangles (images of $2k$-dimensional positroid cells which map injectively into $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,2}(Z)$). Finally, we introduce new cluster structures in the amplituhedron.
Equivariant log concavity and representation stability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We expand upon the notion of equivariant log concavity, and make equivariant log concavity conjectures for Orlik--Solomon algebras of matroids, Cordovil algebras of oriented matroids, and Orlik--Terao algebras of hyperplane arrangements. In the case of the Coxeter arrangement for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we exploit the theory of representation stability to give computer assisted proofs of these conjectures in low degree.

A Trivariate Dichromate Polynomial for Digraphs
We define a trivariate polynomial combining the NL-coflow and the NL-flow polynomial, which build a dual pair counting acyclic colorings of directed graphs, in the more general setting of regular oriented matroids.

Category $\mathcal{O}$ for Oriented Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We associate to a sufficiently generic oriented matroid program and choice of linear system of parameters a finite dimensional algebra, whose representation theory is analogous to blocks of Bernstein--Gelfand--Gelfand category $\mathcal O$. When the data above comes from a generic linear program for a hyperplane arrangement, we recover the algebra defined by Braden--Licata--Proudfoot--Webster. Applying our construction to nonlinear oriented matroid programs provides a large new class of algebras. For Euclidean oriented matroid programs, the resulting algebras are quasi-hereditary and Koszul, as in the linear setting. In the non-Euclidean case, we obtain algebras that are not quasi-hereditary and not known to be Koszul, but still have a natural class of standard modules and satisfy numerical analogues of quasi-heredity and Koszulity on the level of graded Grothendieck groups.

Sweeps, polytopes, oriented matroids, and allowable graphs of permutations
Published in Combinatorica (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A sweep of a point configuration is any ordered partition induced by a linear functional. Posets of sweeps of planar point configurations were formalized and abstracted by Goodman and Pollack under the theory of allowable sequences of permutations. We introduce two generalizations that model posets of sweeps of higher dimensional configurations. Mimicking the fact that sweep polytopes of point configurations (the monotone path polytopes of the associated zonotopes) are projections of permutahedra, we define sweep oriented matroids as strong maps of the braid oriented matroid. Allowable sequences are then the sweep oriented matroids of rank 2, and many of their properties extend to higher rank. We show strong ties between sweep oriented matroids and both modular hyperplanes and Dilworth truncations from (unoriented) matroid theory. We also explore their connection with the generalized Baues problem for cellular strings, where sweep oriented matroids can play the role of monotone path polytopes, even for non-realizable oriented matroids. In particular, we show that for oriented matroids that admit a sweep oriented matroid, their poset of pseudo-sweeps deformation retracts to a sphere of the appropriate dimension. A second generalization are allowable graphs of permutations: symmetric sets of permutations pairwise connected by allowable sequences. They have the structure of acycloids and include sweep oriented matroids.

Monotone Paths on Cross-Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the early 1990's, Billera and Sturmfels introduced the monotone path polytope (MPP), a special case of the general theory of fiber polytopes that associates a polytope to a pair $(P,\varphi)$ of a polytope $P$ and linear functional $\varphi$. In that same paper, they showed that MPPs of simplices and hyper-cubes are combinatorial cubes and permutahedra respectively. Their work has lead to many developments in combinatorics. Here we investigate the monotone paths for generic orientations of cross-polytopes. We show the face lattice of its MPP is isomorphic to the lattice of intervals in the sign poset from oriented matroid theory. We look at its $f$-vector, its realizations, and facets.

Independent Hyperplanes in Oriented Paving Matroids
In 1993, Csima and Sawyer proved that in a non-pencil arrangement of n pseudolines, there are at least $\frac{6}{13}n$ simple points of intersection. Since pseudoline arrangements are the topological representations of reorientation classes of oriented matroids of rank $3$, in this paper, we will use this result to prove by induction that an oriented paving matroid of rank $r \ge 3$ on $n$ elements, where $n \geq 5+ r$, has at least $\frac{12}{13(r-1)} \binom{n}{r-2}$ independent hyperplanes, yielding a new necessary condition for a paving matroid to be orientable.

Single-element extensions of matroids over skew tracts
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Matroids over skew tracts provide an algebraic framework simultaneously generalizing the notions of linear subspaces, matroids, oriented matroids, phased matroids, and some other ``matroids with extra structure". A single-element extension of a matroid $\mathcal{M}$ over a skew tract $T$ is a matroid $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}$ over $T$ obtained from $\mathcal{M}$ by adding one more element. Crapo characterized single-element extensions of ordinary matroids, and Las Vergnas characterized single-element extensions of oriented matroids, in terms of single-element extensions of their rank 2 contractions. The results of Crapo and Las Vergnas do not generalize to matroids over skew tracts, but we will show a necessary and sufficient condition on skew tracts, called Pathetic Cancellation, such that the result can generalize to weak matroids over skew tracts. Stringent skew hyperfields are a special case of skew tracts which behave in many ways like skew fields. We find a characterization of single-element extensions of strong matroids over stringent skew hyperfields.

Matroids over Skew Tracts
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, volume 109, March 2023, 103643 • View PublicationBIB
Matroids over tracts provide an algebraic framework simultaneously generalizing the notions of matroids, oriented matroids, and valuated matroids, presented by Baker and Bowler. Pendavingh partially extended this theory to skew hyperfields and presented a new axiom system in terms of quasi-Plücker coordinates. We present a theory of matroids over skew tracts, which generalizes both the theory of matroids over tracts and the theory of weak matroids over skew hyperfields developed by Pendavingh. We give several cryptomorphic axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, quasi-Plücker coordinates and dual pairs.

Finitary affine oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the axiomatic study of affine oriented matroids (AOMs) on arbitrary ground sets, obtaining fundamental notions such as minors, reorientations and a natural embedding into the frame work of Complexes of Oriented Matroids. The restriction to the finitary case (FAOMs) allows us to study tope graphs and covector posets, as well as to view FAOMs as oriented finitary semimatroids. We show shellability of FAOMs and single out the FAOMs that are affinely homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we study group actions on AOMs, whose quotients in the case of FAOMs are a stepping stone towards a general theory of affine and toric pseudoarrangements. Our results include applications of the multiplicity Tutte polynomial of group actions of semimatroids, generalizing enumerative properties of toric arrangements to a combinatorially defined class of arrangements of submanifolds. This answers partially a question by Ehrenborg and Readdy.

Patchworking Oriented Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a previous work, we gave a construction of (not necessarily realizable) oriented matroids from a triangulation of a product of two simplices. In this follow-up paper, we use a variant of Viro's patchworking to derive a topological representation of the oriented matroid directly from the polyhedral structure of the triangulation, hence finding a combinatorial manifestation of patchworking besides tropical algebraic geometry. We achieve this by rephrasing the patchworking procedure as a controlled cell merging process, guided by the structure of tropical oriented matroids. A key insight is a new promising technique to show that the final cell complex is regular.
Even Circuits in Oriented Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we generalise the even directed cycle problem, which asks whether a given digraph contains a directed cycle of even length, to orientations of regular matroids. We define non-even oriented matroids generalising non-even digraphs, which played a central role in resolving the computational complexity of the even dicycle problem. Then we show that the problem of detecting an even directed circuit in a regular matroid is polynomially equivalent to the recognition of non-even oriented matroids. Our main result is a precise characterisation of the class of non-even oriented bond matroids in terms of forbidden minors, which complements an existing characterisation of non-even oriented graphic matroids by Seymour and Thomassen.

Congruence Normality of Simplicial Hyperplane Arrangements via Oriented Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements was first given by Grünbaum in 1971. These arrangements naturally generalize finite Coxeter arrangements and the weak order through the poset of regions. For simplicial arrangements, posets of regions are in fact lattices. We update Grünbaum's catalogue, providing normals and invariants for all known sporadic simplicial arrangements with up to 37 lines. The weak order is known to be congruence normal, and congruence normality for simplicial arrangements can be determined using polyhedral cones called shards. In this article, we provide additional structure to the catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements by determining which arrangements always/sometimes/never lead to congruence normal lattices of regions. To this end, we use oriented matroids to recast shards as covectors to determine congruence normality of large hyperplane arrangements. As a consequence of this approach we derive in particular which lattices of regions of sporadic simplicial arrangements of rank 3 are always congruence normal. We also show that lattices of regions from finite Weyl groupoids of any rank are congruence normal.
