Realization Spaces of Uniform Phased Matroids
A phased matroid is a matroid with additional structure which plays the same role for complex vector arrangements that oriented matroids play for real vector arrangements. The realization space of an oriented (resp., phased) matroid is the space of vector arrangements in $\mathbb R^n$ (resp., $\mathbb C^n$) that correspond to oriented (resp., phased) matroid, modulo a change of coordinates. According to Mnëv's Universality Theorem, the realization spaces of uniform oriented matroids with rank greater than or equal to $3$ can be as complicated as any open semi-algebraic variety. In contrast, uniform phased matroids which are not essentially oriented have remarkably simple realization spaces if they are uniform. We also present a criterion for realizability of uniform phased matroids that are not essentially oriented.

The Active Bijection 2.a - Decomposition of activities for matroid bases, and Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors
We introduce and study filtrations of a matroid on a linearly ordered ground set, which are particular sequences of nested sets. A given basis can be decomposed into a uniquely defined sequence of bases of minors, such that these bases have an internal/external activity equal to 1/0 or 0/1 (in the sense of Tutte polynomial activities). This decomposition, which we call the active filtration/partition of the basis, refines the known partition of the ground set into internal and external elements with respect to a given basis. It can be built by a certain closure operator, which we call the active closure. It relies only on the fundamental bipartite graph of the basis and can be expressed also as a decomposition of general bipartite graphs on a linearly ordered set of vertices. From this, first, structurally, we obtain that the set of all bases can be canonically partitioned and decomposed in terms of such bases of minors induced by filtrations. Second, enumeratively, we derive an expression of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors. This expression refines at the same time the classical expressions in terms of basis activities and orientation activities (if the matroid is oriented), and the well-known convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial. Third, in a companion paper of the same series (No. 2.b), we use this decomposition of matroid bases, along with a similar decomposition of oriented matroids, and along with a bijection in the 1/0 activity case from a previous paper (No. 1), to define the canonical active bijection between orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid, as well as various related bijections.

The active bijection for graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The active bijection forms a package of results studied by the authors in a series of papers in oriented matroids. The present paper is intended to state the main results in the particular case, and more widespread language, of graphs. We associate any directed graph, defined on a linearly ordered set of edges, with one particular of its spanning trees, which we call its active spanning tree. For any graph on a linearly ordered set of edges, this yields a surjective mapping from orientations onto spanning trees, which preserves activities (for orientations in the sense of Las Vergnas, for spanning trees in the sense of Tutte), as well as some partitions (or filtrations) of the edge set associated with orientations and spanning trees. It yields a canonical bijection between classes of orientations and spanning trees, as well as a refined bijection between all orientations and edge subsets, containing various noticeable bijections [...]. Several constructions of independent interest are involved. The basic case concerns bipolar orientations, which are in bijection with their fully optimal spanning trees, as proved in a previous paper, and as computed in a companion paper. We give a canonical decomposition of a directed graph on a linearly ordered set of edges into acyclic/cyclic bipolar directed graphs. Considering all orientations of a graph, we obtain an expression of the Tutte polynomial in terms of products of beta invariants of minors, a remarkable partition of the set of orientations into activity classes, and a simple expression of the Tutte polynomial using four orientation activity parameters. We derive a similar decomposition theorem for spanning trees. We also provide a general deletion/contraction framework for these bijections and relatives.

On Tutte polynomial expansion formulas in perspectives of matroids and oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the active partition of the ground set of an oriented matroid perspective (or quotient, or strong map) on a linearly ordered ground set. The reorientations obtained by arbitrarily reorienting parts of the active partition share the same active partition. This yields an equivalence relation for the set of reorientations of an oriented matroid perspective, whose classes are enumerated by coefficients of the Tutte polynomial, and a remarkable partition of the set of reorientations into boolean lattices, from which we get a short direct proof of a 4-variable expansion formula for the Tutte polynomial in terms of orientation activities. This formula was given in the last unpublished preprint by Michel Las Vergnas; the above equivalence relation and notion of active partition generalize a former construction in oriented matroids by Michel Las Vergnas and the author; and the possibility of such a proof technique in perspectives was announced in the aforementioned preprint. We also briefly highlight how the 5-variable expansion of the Tutte polynomial in terms of subset activities in matroid perspectives comes in a similar way from the known partition of the power set of the ground set into boolean lattices related to subset activities (and we complete the proof with a property which was missing in the literature). In particular, the paper applies to matroids and oriented matroids on a linearly ordered ground set.

The Active Bijection 2.b - Decomposition of activities for oriented matroids, and general definitions of the active bijection
The active bijection for oriented matroids (and real hyperplane arrangements, and graphs, as particular cases) is introduced and investigated by the authors in a series of papers. Given any oriented matroid defined on a linearly ordered ground set, we exhibit one particularité of its bases, which we call its active basis, with remarkable properties. It preserves activities (for oriented matroids in the sense of Las Vergnas, for matroid bases in the sense of Tutte), as well as some active partitions of the ground set associated with oriented matroids and matroid bases. It yields a canonical bijection between classes of reorientations and bases [...]. It also yields a refined bijection between all reorientations and subsets of the ground set. Those bijections are related to various Tutte polynomial expressions [...]. They contain various noticeable bijections involving orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid. [...] In previous papers of this series, we defined the active bijection between bounded regions and uniactive internal bases by means of fully optimal bases (No. 1), and we defined a decomposition of activities for matroid bases by means of [...] particular sequences of minors (companion paper, No. 2.a). The present paper is central in the series. First, we define a decomposition of activities for oriented matroids, using the same sequences of minors, yielding a decomposition of an oriented matroid into bounded regions of minors. Second, we use the previous results together to provide the canonical and refined active bijections alluded to above. We also give an overview and examples of the various results of independent interest involved in the construction. They arise as soon as the ground set of an oriented matroid is linearly ordered.

Lattice Path Matroids are 3-Colorable
We show that every lattice path matroid of rank at least two has a quite simple coline, also known as a positive coline. Therefore every orientation of a lattice path matroid is 3-colorable with respect to the chromatic number of oriented matroids introduced by J. Nešetřil, R. Nickel, and W. Hochstättler.

A Proof of the Strict Monotone 5-step Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A computer search through the oriented matroid programs with dimension 5 and 10 facets shows that the maximum strictly monotone diameter is 5. Thus $Δ_{sm}(5,10)=5$. This enumeration is analogous to that of Bremner and Schewe for the non-monotone diameter of 6-polytopes with 12 facets. Similar enumerations show that $Δ_{sm}(4,9)=5$ and $Δ_m(4,9)=Δ_m(5,10)=6.$ We shorten the known non-computer proof of the strict monotone 4-step conjecture.

Orientable arithmetic matroids

The theory of matroids has been generalized to oriented matroids and, recently, to arithmetic matroids. We want to give a definition of "oriented arithmetic matroid" and prove some properties like the "uniqueness of orientation".

The Varchenko Determinant for Oriented Matroids
We generalize the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement to oriented matroids. We show that the celebrated determinant formula for the Varchenko matrix, first proved by Varchenko, generalizes to oriented matroids. It follows that the determinant only depends on the matroid underlying the oriented matroid and analogous formulas hold for cones in oriented matroids. We follow a proof strategy for the original Varchenko formula first suggested by Denham and Hanlon. Besides several technical lemmas this strategy also requires a topological result on supertopes which is of independent interest. We show that a supertope considered as a subposet of the tope poset has a contractible order complex.

A counterexample to Las Vergnas' strong map conjecture on realizable oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Las Vergnas' strong map conjecture, states that any strong map of oriented matroids $f:\mathcal{M}_1\rightarrow\mathcal{M}_2$ can be factored into extensions and contractions. The conjecture is known to be false due to a construction by Richter-Gebert, he find a non-factorizable strong map $f:\mathcal{M}_1\rightarrow\mathcal{M}_2$, however in his example $\mathcal{M}_1$ is not realizable. The problem that whether there exists a non-factorizable strong map between realizable oriented matroids still remains open. In this paper we provide a counterexample to the strong map conjecture on realizable oriented matroids, which is a strong map $f:\mathcal{M}_1\rightarrow\mathcal{M}_2$, $\mathcal{M}_1$ is an alternating oriented matroid of rank $4$ and $f$ has corank $2$. We prove it is not factorizable by showing that there is no uniform oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}^{\prime}$ of rank $3$ such that $\mathcal{M}_1\rightarrow\mathcal{M}^{\prime}\rightarrow\mathcal{M}_2$.
Trianguloids and Triangulations of Root Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Triangulations of a product of two simplices and, more generally, of root polytopes are closely related to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky's theory of discriminants, to tropical geometry, tropical oriented matroids, and to generalized permutohedra. We introduce a new approach to these objects, identifying a triangulation of a root polytope with a certain bijection between lattice points of two generalized permutohedra. In order to study such bijections, we define trianguloids as edge-colored graphs satisfying simple local axioms. We prove that trianguloids are in bijection with triangulations of root polytopes.
Zonotopes whose cellular strings are all coherent
Published • View PublicationBIB
A cellular string of a polytope is a sequence of faces stacked on top of each other in a given direction. The poset of cellular strings, ordered by refinement, is known to be homotopy equivalent to a sphere. The subposet of coherent cellular strings is the face lattice of the fiber polytope, hence is homeomorphic to a sphere. In some special cases, every cellular string is coherent. Such polytopes are said to be all-coherent. We give a complete classification of zonotopes with the all-coherence property in terms of their oriented matroid structure. Although the face lattice of the fiber polytope in this case is not an oriented matroid invariant, we prove that the all-coherence property is invariant.

Topological Representation of the Transit Sets of k-Point Crossover Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
$k$-point crossover operators and their recombination sets are studied from different perspectives. We show that transit functions of $k$-point crossover generate, for all $k>1$, the same convexity as the interval function of the underlying graph. This settles in the negative an open problem by Mulder about whether the geodesic convexity of a connected graph $G$ is uniquely determined by its interval function $I$. The conjecture of Gitchoff and Wagner that for each transit set $R_k(x,y)$ distinct from a hypercube there is a unique pair of parents from which it is generated is settled affirmatively. Along the way we characterize transit functions whose underlying graphs are Hamming graphs, and those with underlying partial cube graphs. For general values of $k$ it is shown that the transit sets of $k$-point crossover operators are the subsets with maximal Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension. Moreover, the transit sets of $k$-point crossover on binary strings form topes of uniform oriented matroid of VC-dimension $k+1$. The Topological Representation Theorem for oriented matroids therefore implies that $k$-point crossover operators can be represented by pseudosphere arrangements. This provides the tools necessary to study the special case $k=2$ in detail.

Convexity in ordered matroids and the generalized external order
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(3) (2020), P3.41 • View PublicationBIB
In 1980, Las Vergnas defined a notion of discrete convexity for oriented matroids, which Edelman subsequently related to the theory of anti-exchange closure functions and convex geometries. In this paper, we use generalized matroid activity to construct a convex geometry associated with an ordered, unoriented matroid. The construction in particular yields a new type of representability for an ordered matroid defined by the affine representability of its corresponding convex geometry. The lattice of convex sets of this convex geometry induces an ordering on the matroid independent sets which extends the external active order on matroid bases. We show that this generalized external order forms a supersolvable meet-distributive lattice refining the geometric lattice of flats, and we uniquely characterize the lattices isomorphic to the external order of a matroid. Finally, we introduce a new trivariate generating function generalizing the matroid Tutte polynomial.

Oriented Matroid Structures From Realized Root Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper investigates the question of uniqueness of the reduced oriented matroid structure arising from root systems of a Coxeter group in real vector spaces. We settle the question for finite Coxeter groups, irreducible affine Weyl groups and all rank three Coxeter groups. In these cases, the oriented matroid structure is unique unless $W$ is of type $\widetilde{A}_n, n\geq 3$, in which case there are three possibilities.

Hyperfield Grassmannians

In a recent paper Baker and Bowler introduced matroids over hyperfields, offering a common generalization of matroids, oriented matroids, and linear subspaces of based vector spaces. This paper introduces the notion of a topological hyperfield and explores the generalization of Grassmannians and realization spaces to this context, particularly in relating the (hyper)fields R and C to hyperfields arising in matroid theory and in tropical geometry.

Matroids over partial hyperstructures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present an algebraic framework which simultaneously generalizes the notion of linear subspaces, matroids, valuated matroids, oriented matroids, and regular matroids. To do this, we first introduce algebraic objects called tracts which generalize both hyperfields in the sense of Krasner and partial fields in the sense of Semple and Whittle. We then define matroids over tracts; in fact, there are (at least) two natural notions of matroid in this general context, which we call weak and strong matroids. We give "cryptomorphic" axiom systems for such matroids in terms of circuits, Grassmann-Plücker functions, and dual pairs, and establish some basic duality results. We then explore sufficient criteria for the notions of weak and strong matroids to coincide. For example, if $F$ is a particularly nice kind of tract called a doubly distributive partial hyperfield, we show that the notions of weak and strong $F$-matroids coincide. We also give examples of tracts $F$ and weak $F$-matroids which are not strong. Our theory of matroids over tracts is closely related to, but more general than, "matroids over fuzzy rings" in the sense of Dress and Dress-Wenzel.

Purity and separation for oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Leclerc and Zelevinsky, motivated by the study of quasi-commuting quantum flag minors, introduced the notions of strongly separated and weakly separated collections. These notions are closely related to the theory of cluster algebras, to the combinatorics of the double Bruhat cells, and to the totally positive Grassmannian. A key feature, called the purity phenomenon, is that every maximal by inclusion strongly (resp., weakly) separated collection of subsets in $[n]$ has the same cardinality. In this paper, we extend these notions and define $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections for any oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$. We show that maximal by size $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections are in bijection with fine zonotopal tilings (if $\mathcal{M}$ is a realizable oriented matroid), or with one-element liftings of $\mathcal{M}$ in general position (for an arbitrary oriented matroid). We introduce the class of pure oriented matroids for which the purity phenomenon holds: an oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$ is pure if $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections form a pure simplicial complex, i.e., any maximal by inclusion $\mathcal{M}$-separated collection is also maximal by size. We pay closer attention to several special classes of oriented matroids: oriented matroids of rank $3$, graphical oriented matroids, and uniform oriented matroids. We classify pure oriented matroids in these cases. An oriented matroid of rank $3$ is pure if and only if it is a positroid (up to reorienting and relabeling its ground set). A graphical oriented matroid is pure if and only if its underlying graph is an outerplanar graph, that is, a subgraph of a triangulation of an $n$-gon. We give a simple conjectural characterization of pure oriented matroids by forbidden minors and prove it for the above classes of matroids (rank $3$, graphical, uniform).
