The theme of this article is a "reciprocity" between bounded up-down paths and bounded alternating sequences. Roughly speaking, this ``reciprocity" manifests itself by the fact that the extension of the sequence of numbers of paths of length $n$, consisting of diagonal up- and down-steps and being confined to a strip of bounded width, to negative $n$ produces numbers of alternating sequences of integers that are bounded from below and from above. We show that this reciprocity extends to families of non-intersecting bounded up-down paths and certain arrays of alternating sequences which we call alternating tableaux. We provide as well weighted versions of these results. Our proofs are based on Viennot's theory of heaps of pieces and on the combinatorics of non-intersecting lattice paths. An unexpected application leads to a refinement of a result of Bousquet-Mélou and Viennot on the width-height-area generating function of parallelogram polyominoes. Finally, we exhibit the relation of the arising alternating tableaux to plane partitions of strip shapes.

Fibonacci polynomials

The Fibonacci polynomials $\big\{F_n(x)\big\}_{n\ge 0}$ have been studied in multiple ways. In this paper we study them by means of the theory of Heaps of Viennot. In this setting our polynomials form a basis $\big\{P_n(x)\big\}_{n\ge 0}$ with $P_n(x)$ monic of degree $n$. This given, we are forced to set $P_n(x)=F_{n+1}(x)$. The Heaps setting extends the Flajolet view of the classical theory of orthogonal polynomials given by a three term recursion. Thus with Heaps most of the identities for our $P_n(x)'s$ can be derived by combinatorial arguments. Using the present setting we derive a variety of new identities. We must mention that the theory of Heaps is presented here without restrictions. This is much more than needed to deal with the Fibonacci polynomials. We do this to convey a flavor of the power of Heaps. In the lecture notes there is a chapter dedicated to Heaps where most of its contents are dedicated to applications of the theory.
Minor summation formula of hyperpfaffians and Selberg integrals
In the previous paper (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 120, 2013, 1263--1284) H. Tagawa and the two authors proposed an algebraic method to compute certain Pfaffians whose form resemble to Hankel determinants associated with moment sequences of the classical orthogonal polynomials. At the end of the paper they offered several conjectures. In this work we employ a completely different method to evaluate this type of Pfaffians. The idea is to apply certain de Bruijn type formula and convert the evaluation of the Pfaffians to the certain Selberg type integrals. This approach works not only for Pfaffians but also for hyperpfaffians. Hence it enables us to establish much more generalized identities than those conjectured in the previous paper. We also investigate some Pfaffians related to classical $q$-orthogonal polynomials.
Linear programming bounds for covering radius of spherical designs

We apply polynomial techniques (linear programming) to obtain lower and upper bounds on the covering radius of spherical designs as function of their dimension, strength, and cardinality. In terms of inner products we improve the lower bounds due to Fazekas and Levenshtein and propose new upper bounds. Our approach to the lower bounds involves certain signed measures whose corresponding series of orthogonal polynomials are positive definite up to a certain (appropriate) degree. Upper bounds are based on a geometric observation and more or less standard linear programming techniques.
Ratios of Hahn--Exton $q$-Bessel functions and $q$-Lommel polynomials
In 1993 Delest and Fédou showed that a generating function for connected skew shapes is given as a ratio $J_{ν+1}/J_ν$ of the Hahn--Exton $q$-Bessel functions when a parameter $ν$ is zero. They conjectured that when $ν$ is a nonnegative integer the coefficients of the generating function are rational functions whose numerator and denominator are polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative integer coefficients, which is a $q$-analog of Kishore's 1963 result on Bessel functions. The first main result of this paper is a proof of the conjecture of Delest and Fédou. The second main result is a refinement of the result of Delest and Fédou: a generating function for connected skew shapes with bounded diagonals is given as a ratio of $q$-Lommel polynomials introduced by Koelink and Swarttouw. It is also shown that the ratio $J_{ν+1}/J_ν$ has two different continued fraction expressions, which give respectively a generating function for moments of orthogonal polynomials of type $R_I$ and a generating function for moments of usual orthogonal polynomials. Orthogonal polynomial techniques due to Flajolet and Viennot are used.
Tight relative $t$-designs on two shells in hypercubes, and Hahn and Hermite polynomials

Relative $t$-designs in the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\mathcal{Q}_n$ are equivalent to weighted regular $t$-wise balanced designs, which generalize combinatorial $t$-$(n,k,λ)$ designs by allowing multiple block sizes as well as weights. Partly motivated by the recent study on tight Euclidean $t$-designs on two concentric spheres, in this paper we discuss tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells. We show under a mild condition that such a relative $t$-design induces the structure of a coherent configuration with two fibers. Moreover, from this structure we deduce that a polynomial from the family of the Hahn hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials must have only integral simple zeros. The Terwilliger algebra is the main tool to establish these results. By explicitly evaluating the behavior of the zeros of the Hahn polynomials when they degenerate to the Hermite polynomials under an appropriate limit process, we prove a theorem which gives a partial evidence that the non-trivial tight relative $t$-designs in $\mathcal{Q}_n$ supported on two shells are rare for large $t$.
Catalan Numbers and Jacobi Polynomials
We prove that the inverse of the Hankel matrix of the reciprocals of the Catalan numbers has integer entries. We generalize the result to an infinite family of generalized Catalan numbers. The Hankel matrices that we consider are associated with orthogonal polynomials that are variants of Jacobi polynomials. Our proofs use these polynomials and computer algebra based on Wilf-Zeilberger theory.

We prove evaluations of Hankel determinants of linear combinations of moments of orthogonal polynomials (or, equivalently, of generating functions for Motzkin paths), thus generalising known results for Catalan numbers.
Maps of unfixed genus and blossoming trees

We introduce bijections between families of rooted maps with unfixed genus and families of so-called blossoming trees endowed with an arbitrary forward matching of their leaves. We first focus on Eulerian maps with controlled vertex degrees. The mapping from blossoming trees to maps is a generalization to unfixed genus of Schaeffer's closing construction for planar Eulerian maps. The inverse mapping relies on the existence of canonical orientations which allow to equip the maps with canonical spanning trees, as proved by Bernardi. Our bijection gives in particular (here in the Eulerian case) a combinatorial explanation to the striking similarity between the (infinite) recursive system of equations which determines the partition function of maps with unfixed genus (as obtained via matrix models and orthogonal polynomials) and that determining the partition function of planar maps. All the functions in the recursive system get a combinatorial interpretation as generating functions for maps endowed with particular multiple markings of their edges. This allows us in particular to give a combinatorial proof of some differential identities satisfied by these functions. We also consider face-colored Eulerian maps with unfixed genus and derive some striking identities between their generating functions and those of properly weighted marked maps. The same methodology is then applied to deal with $m$-regular bipartite maps with unfixed genus, leading to similar results. The case of cubic maps is also briefly discussed.
Combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials
The Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials are an important family of orthogonal polynomials in one variable $x$ depending on 3 parameters $α$, $β$ and $q$. They are closely connected to a model from statistical mechanics called the partially asymmetric simple exclusion process (PASEP) and they can be obtained as a specialization of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. We give two different combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the (transformed) Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials. Our formulas make manifest the fact that the coefficients are polynomials in $α$, $β$ and $q$ with positive coefficients.
Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials
We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.
Chebyshev moments and Riordan involutions
We show that the coefficient array of a family of Chebyshev moments defines an involution in the group of Riordan arrays. We then extend this result to certain families of $d$-orthogonal polynomials.
On the Askey--Wilson type integrals
The Askey--Wilson integral is very important in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. Liu's integral is a generalization of the Askey--Wilson integral with many parameters. With the help of the series rearrangement method, we give the elementary proof of them. Furthermore, we establish two new Askey--Wilson type integrals in the similar way and find a generalization of a known transformation formula containing three $_{3}φ_{2}$ series.
Riordan arrays, the $A$-matrix, and Somos $4$ sequences
We characterize certain Riordan arrays by their $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences. We conjecture the form of a generic $A$-matrix which leads to Somos $4$ sequences. We find an $A$-matrix that produces a Riordan quasi-involution, and we study the $A$-matrices and $ρ$ sequences of the moment matrices of certain perturbed orthogonal polynomials.
Generalized Catalan recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves, and orthogonal polynomials
We show that the Catalan-Schroeder convolution recurrences and their higher order generalizations can be solved using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers. We investigate the Hankel transforms of many of the recurrence solutions, and indicate that Somos $4$ sequences often arise. We exhibit relations between recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves and Somos $4$ sequences. We furthermore indicate how one can associate a family of orthogonal polynomials to a point on an elliptic curve, whose moments are related to recurrence solutions.
Fractional Revival and Association Schemes

Fractional revival occurs between two vertices in a graph if a continuous-time quantum walk unitarily maps the characteristic vector of one vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of the two vertices. This phenomenon is relevant in quantum information in particular for entanglement generation in spin networks. We study fractional revival in graphs whose adjacency matrices belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of association schemes. A specific focus is a characterization of balanced fractional revival (which corresponds to maximal entanglement) in graphs that belong to the Hamming scheme. Our proofs exploit the intimate connections between algebraic combinatorics and orthogonal polynomials.
Constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, Riordan arrays and moment sequences
We study properties of constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials using Riordan arrays. We give details of related orthogonal polynomials, and we explore relationships between the moments of these orthogonal polynomials, the moments of the defining Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and the expansions of $T$-fractions. Closed form expressions are given for the polynomials and their moments.

We derive lower und upper bounds for the degree of regularity of an overdetermined, zero-dimensional and homogeneous quadratic semi-regular system of polynomial equations. The analysis is based on the interpretation of the associated Hilbert series as the truncation of the generating function of values of a certain family of orthogonal polynomials, the Krawtchouk polynomials.

We study Wronskians of Appell polynomials indexed by integer partitions. These families of polynomials appear in rational solutions of certain Painlevé equations and in the study of exceptional orthogonal polynomials. We determine their derivatives, their average and variance with respect to Plancherel measure, and introduce several recurrence relations. In addition, we prove an integrality conjecture for Wronskian Hermite polynomials previously made by the first and last authors. Our proofs all exploit strong connections with the theory of symmetric functions.
