Semidefinite programming, multivariate orthogonal polynomials, and codes in spherical caps
Published in Europ. J. Comb. 30 (2009), 625-637. • View PublicationBIB
We apply the semidefinite programming approach developed in arxiv:math.MG/0608426 to obtain new upper bounds for codes in spherical caps. We compute new upper bounds for the one-sided kissing number in several dimensions where we in particular get a new tight bound in dimension 8. Furthermore we show how to use the SDP framework to get analytic bounds.

Multivariable Christoffel-Darboux Kernels and Characteristic Polynomials of Random Hermitian Matrices
Published in SIGMA 2 (2006), 085, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).

Calculus proofs of some combinatorial inequalities
Published in Mathematical Inequalities & Applications 6 (2003) 197-209 • Search Publication
Using calculus we show how to prove some combinatorial inequalities of the type log-concavity or log-convexity. It is shown by this method that binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds are log-concave, and that Motzkin numbers and secondary structure numbers of rank 1 are log-convex. In fact, we prove via calculus a much stronger result that a natural continuous ``patchwork'' (i.e. corresponding dynamical systems) of Motzkin numbers and secondary structures recursions are increasing functions. We indicate how to prove asymptotically the log-convexity for general secondary structures. Our method also applies to show that sequences of values of some orthogonal polynomials, and in particular the sequence of central Delannoy numbers, are log-convex.

Logarithmic behavior of some combinatorial sequences
Two general methods for establishing the logarithmic behavior of recursively defined sequences of real numbers are presented. One is the interlacing method, and the other one is based on calculus. Both methods are used to prove logarithmic behavior of some combinatorially relevant sequences, such as Motzkin and Schröder numbers, sequences of values of some classic orthogonal polynomials, and many others. The calculus method extends also to two- (or more-) indexed sequences.

Spectral approach to linear programming bounds on codes
Published in Problems of Information Transmission 42, 2, 2006, 77-89 • View PublicationBIB
We give new proofs of asymptotic upper bounds of coding theory obtained within the frame of Delsarte's linear programming method. The proofs rely on the analysis of eigenvectors of some finite-dimensional operators related to orthogonal polynomials. The examples of the method considered in the paper include binary codes, binary constant-weight codes, spherical codes, and codes in the projective spaces.

Optimal Embeddings of Distance Regular Graphs into Euclidean Spaces
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 98 (2008), 95-104 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give a lower bound for the least distortion embedding of a distance regular graph into Euclidean space. We use the lower bound for finding the least distortion for Hamming graphs, Johnson graphs, and all strongly regular graphs. Our technique involves semidefinite programming and exploiting the algebra structure of the optimization problem so that the question of finding a lower bound of the least distortion is reduced to an analytic question about orthogonal polynomials.

A unified approach to polynomial sequences with only real zeros
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 38 (2007) 542-560 • View PublicationBIB
We give new sufficient conditions for a sequence of polynomials to have only real zeros based on the method of interlacing zeros. As applications we derive several well-known facts, including the reality of zeros of orthogonal polynomials, matching polynomials, Narayana polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. We also settle certain conjectures of Stahl on genus polynomials by proving them for certain classes of graphs, while showing that they are false in general.

Orthogonal polynomials in several non-commuting variables. II
In this paper we continue to investigate a certain class of Hankel-like positive definite kernels using their associated orthogonal polynomials. The main result of this paper is about the structure of this kind of kernels.

Square ice, alternating sign matrices and classical orthogonal polynomials
Published in J.Stat.Mech.0501:P01005,2005 • View PublicationBIB
The six-vertex model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions, or square ice, is considered for particular values of its parameters, corresponding to 1-, 2-, and 3-enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices (ASMs). Using Hankel determinant representations for the partition function and the boundary correlator of homogeneous square ice, it is shown how the ordinary and refined enumerations can be derived in a very simple and straightforward way. The derivation is based on the standard relationship between Hankel determinants and orthogonal polynomials. For the particular sets of parameters corresponding to 1-, 2-, and 3-enumerations of ASMs, the Hankel determinant can be naturally related to Continuous Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, and Continuous Dual Hahn polynomials, respectively. This observation allows for a unified and simplified treatment of ASMs enumerations. In particular, along the lines of the proposed approach, we provide a complete solution to the long standing problem of the refined 3-enumeration of AMSs.

Orthogonal polynomials with a resolvent-type generating function
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 360 (2008), 4125-4143 • View PublicationBIB
The subject of this paper are polynomials in multiple non-commuting variables. For polynomials of this type orthogonal with respect to a state, we prove a Favard-type recursion relation. On the other hand, free Sheffer polynomials are a polynomial family in non-commuting variables with a resolvent-type generating function. Among such families, we describe the ones that are orthogonal. Their recursion relations have a more special form; the best way to describe them is in terms of the free cumulant generating function of the state of orthogonality, which turns out to satisfy a type of second-order difference equation. If the difference equation is in fact first order, and the state is tracial, we show that the state is necessarily a rotation of a free product state. We also describe interesting examples of non-tracial infinitely divisible states with orthogonal free Sheffer polynomials.

A difference-integral representation of Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct new families of (q-) difference and (contour) integral operators having nice actions on Koornwinder's multivariate orthogonal polynomials. We further show that the Koornwinder polynomials can be constructed by suitable sequences of these operators applied to the constant polynomial 1, giving the difference-integral representation of the title. Macdonald's conjectures (as proved by van Diejen and Sahi) for the principal specialization and norm follow immediately, as does a Cauchy-type identity of Mimachi.

A triple lacunary generating function for Hermite polynomials
Published in Elect. J. of Combinatorics 12(1) (2005) • View PublicationBIB
Some of the classical orthogonal polynomials such as Hermite, Laguerre, Charlier, etc. have been shown to be the generating polynomials for certain combinatorial objects. These combinatorial interpretations are used to prove new identities and generating functions involving these polynomials. In this paper we apply Foata's combinatorial interpretation of the Hermite polynomials as counting matchings of a set to obtain a triple lacunary generating function for the Hermite polynomials. We also give an umbral proof of this generating function.

BC_n-symmetric abelian functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a family of BC_n-symmetric biorthogonal abelian functions generalizing Koornwinder's orthogonal polynomials, and prove a number of their properties, most notably analogues of Macdonald's conjectures. The construction is based on a direct construction for a special case generalizing Okounkov's interpolation polynomials. We show that these interpolation functions satisfy a collection of generalized hypergeometric identities, including new multivariate elliptic analogues of Jackson's summation and Bailey's transformation.

A new approach to the theory of classical hypergeometric polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a unified approach to the spectral analysis of an hypergeometric type operator whose eigenfunctions include the classical orthogonal polynomials. We write the eigenfunctions of this operator by means of a new Taylor formula for operators of Askey-Wilson type. This gives rise to some expressions for the eigenfunctions, which are unknown in such a general setting. Our methods also give a general Rodrigues formula from which several well known formulas of Rodrigues type can be obtained directly. Moreover, other new Rodrigues type formulas come out when seeking for regular solutions of the associated functional equations. The main difference here is that, in contrast with the formulas appearing in the literature, we get non-ramified solutions which are useful for applications in combinatorics. Another fact, that becomes clear in this paper, is the role played by the theory of elliptic functions in the connection between ramified and non-ramified solutions.

Two linear transformations each tridiagonal with respect to an eigenbasis of the other; comments on the parameter array
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. We consider an ordered pair of linear transformations $A:V\to V$ and $A^*:V\to V$ that satisfy conditions (i), (ii) below. (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal. We call such a pair a {\it Leonard pair} on $V$. The structure of any given Leonard pair is deterined by a certain sequence of scalars called its {\it parameter array}. The set of parameter arrays is an affine algebraic variety. We give two characterizations of this variety. One involves bidiagonal matrices and the other involves orthogonal polynomials.

Leonard pairs and the q-Racah polynomials

(ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal. We call such a pair a {\it Leonard pair} on $V$. We discuss a correspondence between Leonard pairs and a class of orthogonal polynomials consisting of the $q$-Racah polynomials and some related polynomials of the Askey scheme. For the polynomials in this class we obtain the 3-term recurrence, difference equation, Askey-Wilson duality, and orthogonality in a uniform manner using the corresponding Leonard pair.
Determinantal Construction of Orthogonal Polynomials Associated with Root Systems
Published in Compositio Math, 140/2, 255--273 (2004) • View PublicationBIB
We consider semisimple triangular operators acting in the symmetric component of the group algebra over the weight lattice of a root system. We present a determinantal formula for the eigenbasis of such triangular operators. This determinantal formula gives rise to an explicit construction of the Macdonald polynomials and of the Heckman-Opdam generalized Jacobi polynomials.

Linearization coefficients for orthogonal polynomials using stochastic processes
Published in Annals of Probability 2005, Vol. 33, No. 1, 114-136 • View PublicationBIB
Given a basis for a polynomial ring, the coefficients in the expansion of a product of some of its elements in terms of this basis are called linearization coefficients. These coefficients have combinatorial significance for many classical families of orthogonal polynomials. Starting with a stochastic process and using the stochastic measures machinery introduced by Rota and Wallstrom, we calculate and give an interpretation of linearization coefficients for a number of polynomial families. The processes involved may have independent, freely independent or q-independent increments. The use of noncommutative stochastic processes extends the range of applications significantly, allowing us to treat Hermite, Charlier, Chebyshev, free Charlier and Rogers and continuous big q-Hermite polynomials. We also show that the q-Poisson process is a Markov process.

Jack polynomials in superspace
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 242 (2003) 331-360 • View PublicationBIB
This work initiates the study of {\it orthogonal} symmetric polynomials in superspace. Here we present two approaches leading to a family of orthogonal polynomials in superspace that generalize the Jack polynomials. The first approach relies on previous work by the authors in which eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland Hamiltonian were constructed. Orthogonal eigenfunctions are now obtained by diagonalizing the first nontrivial element of a bosonic tower of commuting conserved charges not containing this Hamiltonian. Quite remarkably, the expansion coefficients of these orthogonal eigenfunctions in the supermonomial basis are stable with respect to the number of variables. The second and more direct approach amounts to symmetrize products of non-symmetric Jack polynomials with monomials in the fermionic variables. This time, the orthogonality is inherited from the orthogonality of the non-symmetric Jack polynomials, and the value of the norm is given explicitly.

Free martingale polynomials
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 201 (2003), 228-261 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate the properties of the free Sheffer systems, which are certain families of martingale polynomials with respect to the free Levy processes. First, we classify such families that consist of orthogonal polynomials; these are the free analogs of the Meixner systems. Next, we show that the fluctuations around free convolution semigroups have as principal directions the polynomials whose derivatives are martingale polynomials. Finally, we indicate how Rota's finite operator calculus can be modified for the free context.
