The $(q,t)$-Gaussian Process
We introduce a two-parameter deformation of the classical Bosonic, Fermionic, and Boltzmann Fock spaces that is a refinement of the $q$-Fock space of [BS91]. Starting with a real, separable Hilbert space $H$, we construct the $(q,t)$-Fock space and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators, $\{a_{q,t}(h)^\ast\}_{h\in H}$ and $\{a_{q,t}(h)\}_{h\in H}$, satifying the $(q,t)$-commutation relation $a_{q,t}(f)a_{q,t}(g)^\ast-q \,a_{q,t}(g)^\ast a_{q,t}(f)= <f,g>_{_H}\, t^{N},$ for $h,g\in H$, with $N$ denoting the number operator. Interpreting the bounded linear operators on the $(q,t)$-Fock space as non-commutative random variables, the analogue of the Gaussian random variable is given by the deformed field operator $s_{q,t}(h):=a_{q,t}(h)+a_{q,t}(h)^\ast$, for $h\in H$. The resulting refinement is particularly natural, as the moments of $s_{q,t}(h)$ are encoded by the joint statistics of crossings \emph{and nestings} in pair partitions. Furthermore, the orthogonal polynomial sequence associated with the normalized $(q,t)$-Gaussian $s_{q,t}$ is that of the $(q,t)$-Hermite orthogonal polynomials, a deformation of the $q$-Hermite sequence that is given by the recurrence $zH_n(z;q,t)=H_{n+1}(z;q,t)+[n]_{q,t}H_{n-1}(z;q,t),$ with $H_0(z;q,t)=1$, $H_1(z;q,t)=z$, and $[n]_{q,t}=\sum_{i=1}^n q^{i-1}t^{n-i}$. The $q=0<t$ specialization yields a new single-parameter deformation of the full Boltzmann Fock space of free probability. The probability measure associated with the corresponding deformed semicircular operator turns out to be encoded, in various forms, via the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the $t$-Airy function, the $t$-Catalan numbers of Carlitz-Riordan, and the first-order statistics of the reduced Wigner process.

Some nice Hankel determinants
I study Hankel determinants of a class of sequences which can be interpreted as generalizations of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients. They follow a modular pattern with a frequent appearance of zeroes, so that the theory of orthogonal polynomials is not applicable. Even so our theorems and conjectures show some similarity with the relations between Catalan numbers and Fibonacci polynomials or between central binomial coefficients and Lucas polynomials.

A characterization of ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the only orthogonal polynomials with a generating function of the form $F(x z - αz^2)$ are the ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. For special $F$ for which this is the case, we then finish the classification of orthogonal polynomials with more general generating functions $F(x w(z) - R(z))$.

The Continuum Limit of Toda Lattices for Random Matrices with Odd Weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the free energy for a class of Hermitean random matrix models, with odd degree polynomial potential, in the large N limit. It continues an investigation initiated and developed in a sequence of prior works whose ultimate aim is to reveal and understand, in a rigorous way, the deep connections between correlation functions for eigenvalues of these random matrix ensembles on the one hand and the enumerative interpretations of their matrix moments in terms of map combinatorics (a branch of graph theory) on the other. In doing this we make essential use of the link between the asymptotics of the random matrix partition function and orthogonal polynomials with exponential weight equal to the random matrix potential. Along the way we develop and analyze the continuum limits of both the hierarchy of Toda lattice equations and the hierarchy of difference string equations associated to these orthogonal polynomials. The former are found to have the structure of a hierarchy of near-conservation laws universal in the potential; the latter are a novel semi-classical extension of the traditional string equations. Our methods apply to regular maps of both even and odd valence, however we focus on the latter since that is the relevant case for this paper. These methods enable us to rigorously determine closed form expressions for the generating functions that enumerate trivalent maps, in general implicitly, but also explictly in a number of cases.

Eulerian polynomials as moments, via exponential Riordan arrays
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays and orthogonal polynomials, we demonstrate that the "descending power" Eulerian polynomials, and their once shifted sequence, are moment sequences for simple families of orthogonal polynomials, which we characterize in terms of their three-term recurrence. We obtain the generating functions of the polynomial sequences in terms of continued fractions, and we also calculate their Hankel transforms.

Combinatorial polynomials as moments, Hankel transforms and exponential Riordan arrays
In the case of two combinatorial polynomials, we show that they can exhibited as moments of paramaterized families of orthogonal polynomials, and hence derive their Hankel transforms. Exponential Riordan arrays are the main vehicles used for this.

Laguerre and Meixner orthogonal bases in the algebra of symmetric functions
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2012 (2012), 3615-3679 • View PublicationBIB
Analogs of Laguerre and Meixner orthogonal polynomials in the algebra of symmetric functions are studied. This is a detailed exposition of part of the results announced in arXiv:1009.2037. The work is motivated by a connection with a model of infinite-dimensional Markov dynamics.

An orthogonal polynomial coefficient formula for the Hankel transform
We give an explicit formula for the Hankel transform of a regular sequence in terms of the coefficients of the associated orthogonal polynomials and the sequence itself. We apply this formula to some sequences of combinatorial interest, deriving interesting combinatorial identities by this means. Further insight is also gained into the structure of the Hankel transform of a sequence.

Riordan arrays, orthogonal polynomials as moments, and Hankel transforms
Taking the examples of Legendre and Hermite orthogonal polynomials, we show how to interpret the fact that these orthogonal polynomials are moments of other orthogonal polynomials in terms of their associated Riordan arrays. We use these means to calculate the Hankel transforms of the associated polynomial sequences.

Touchard-Riordan formulas, T-fractions, and Jacobi's triple product identity
Published in Ramanujan Journal 30(3) (2013), 341--378 • View PublicationBIB
Touchard-Riordan-like formulas are some expressions appearing in enumeration problems and as moments of orthogonal polynomials. We begin this article with a new combinatorial approach to prove these kind of formulas, related with integer partitions. This gives a new perspective on the original result of Touchard and Riordan. But the main goal is to give a combinatorial proof of a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for q-secant numbers discovered by the first author. An interesting limit case of these objects can be directly interpreted in terms of partitions, so that we obtain a connection between the formula for q-secant numbers, and a particular case of Jacobi's triple product identity. Building on this particular case, we obtain a "finite version" of the triple product identity. It is in the form of a finite sum which is given a combinatorial meaning, so that the triple product identity can be obtained by taking the limit. Here the proof is non-combinatorial and relies on a functional equation satisfied by a T-fraction. Then from this result on the triple product identity, we derive a whole new family of Touchard-Riordan--like formulas whose combinatorics is not yet understood. Eventually, we prove a Touchard-Riordan--like formula for a q-analog of Genocchi numbers, which is related with Jacobi's identity for (q;q)^3 rather than the triple product identity.

On q-Hermite polynomials and their relationship with some other families of orthogonal polynomials
Published in Demonstratio Mathematica, 46(4), 2013, 679-708 • Search Publication
We review properties of the $q-$Hermite polynomials and indicate their links with the Chebyshev, Rogers--Szegö, Al-Salam--Chihara, continuous $q-$% utraspherical polynomials. In particular we recall the connection coefficients between these families of polynomials. We also present some useful and important finite and infinite expansions involving polynomials of these families including symmetric and non-symmetric kernels. In the paper we collect scattered throughout literature useful but not widely known facts concerning these polynomials. It is based on 43 positions of predominantly recent literature.

Pfaffian decomposition and a Pfaffian analogue of q-Catalan Hankel determinants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Hankel determinant evaluation of moment sequences, we study a kind of Pfaffian analogue evaluation. We prove an LU-decomposition analogue for skew-symmetric matrices, called Pfaffian decomposition. We then apply this formula to evaluate Pfaffians related to some moment sequences of classical orthogonal polynomials. In particular we obtain a product formula for a kind of q-Catalan Pfaffians. We also establish a connection between our Pfaffian formulas and certain weighted enumeration of shifted reverse plane partitions.

A Littlewood-Richardson rule for Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald polynomials are orthogonal polynomials associated to root systems, and in the type A case, the symmetric kind is a common generalization of Schur functions, Macdonald spherical functions, and Jack polynomials. We use the combinatorics of alcove walks to calculate products of monomials and intertwining operators of the double affine Hecke algebra. From this, we obtain a product formula for Macdonald polynomials of general type.

A q-analogue of Catalan Hankel determinants
Published in RIMS Kôkyûroku Bessatsu, B11 (2009), 19--42 • Search Publication
In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. Here we consider $\frac{(aq;q)_{n}}{(abq^{2};q)_{n}}$ as a q-analogue of Catalan numbers $C_{n}=\frac1{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$, which is known as the moments of the little q-Jacobi polynomials. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. We also consider a q-analogue of Schröder Hankel determinants, and give a new proof of Moztkin Hankel determinants using an addition formula for ${}_2F_{1}$.

Crossings, Motzkin paths and Moments
Published in Discrete Mathematics 311(18-19) (2011), 2064--2078 • View PublicationBIB
Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.

Orthogonal polynomials and operator orderings
Published in JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS 51, 043506 (2010?) • View PublicationBIB
An alternative and combinatorial proof is given for a connection between a system of Hahn polynomials and identities for symmetric elements in the Heisenberg algebra, which was first observed by Bender, Mead, and Pinsky [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56 (1986), J. Math. Phys. 28, 509 (1987)] and proved by Koornwinder [J. Phys. Phys. 30(4), 1989]. In the same vein two results announced by Bender and Dunne [J. Math. Phys. 29 (8), 1988] connecting a special one-parameter class of Hermitian operator orderings and the continuous Hahn polynomials are also proved.
The Matrix Ansatz, Orthogonal Polynomials, and Permutations
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 46(1--4), 2011, 209--225 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we outline a Matrix Ansatz approach to some problems of combinatorial enumeration. The idea is that many interesting quantities can be expressed in terms of products of matrices, where the matrices obey certain relations. We illustrate this approach with applications to moments of orthogonal polynomials, permutations, signed permutations, and tableaux.

A second look at the toric h-polynomial of a cubical complex
Published in Ann. Comb. 16 (2012), no. 3, 517-541 • View PublicationBIB
We provide an explicit formula for the toric $h$-contribution of each cubical shelling component, and a new combinatorial model to prove Clara Chan's result on the non-negativity of these contributions. Our model allows for a variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result on the $g$-polynomial of the cubical lattice, this variant may be shown by simple inclusion-exclusion. We establish an isomorphism between our model and Chan's model and provide a reinterpretation in terms of noncrossing partitions. By discovering another variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result in the work of Denise and Simion, we find evidence that the toric $h$-polynomials of cubes are related to the Morgan-Voyce polynomials via Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials.

Caustics, counting maps and semi-classical asymptotics
Published in Nonlinearity, Volume 24, Number 2, February 2011, pp. 481 - 526 • View PublicationBIB
This paper develops a deeper understanding of the structure and combinatorial significance of the partition function for Hermitian random matrices. The coefficients of the large N expansion of the logarithm of this partition function, also known as the genus expansion, (and its derivatives) are generating functions for a variety of graphical enumeration problems. The main results are to prove that these generating functions are in fact specific rational functions of a distinguished irrational (algebraic) function of the generating function parameters. This distinguished function is itself the generating function for the Catalan numbers (or generalized Catalan numbers, depending on the choice of parameter). It is also a solution of the inviscid Burgers equation for certain initial data. The shock formation, or caustic, of the Burgers characteristic solution is directly related to the poles of the rational forms of the generating functions. These results in turn provide new information about the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials with respect to exponential weights. One gains new insights into the relation between certain derivatives of the genus expansion and the asymptotic expansion of the first Painleve transcendent, related to the double-scaling limit. This work provides a precise expression of the Painleve asymptotic coefficients directly in terms of the coefficients of the partial fractions expansion of the rational form of the generating functions established here. Moreover, these insights point toward a more general program relating the first Painleve hierarchy and the higher order structure of the double-scaling limit to the specific rational structure of generating functions.
