Unimodality of partition polynomials related to Borwein's conjecture
The objective of this paper is to prove that the polynomials $\prod_{k=0}^n(1+q^{3k+1})(1+q^{3k+2})$ are symmetric and unimodal for $n\geq 0$ by an analytical method.

Rigidity expander graphs
Jordán and Tanigawa recently introduced the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity $a_d(G)$ of a graph $G$. This is a quantitative measure of the $d$-dimensional rigidity of $G$ which generalizes the well-studied notion of spectral expansion of graphs. We present a new lower bound for $a_d(G)$ defined in terms of the spectral expansion of certain subgraphs of $G$ associated with a partition of its vertices into $d$ parts. In particular, we obtain a new sufficient condition for the rigidity of a graph $G$. As a first application, we prove the existence of an infinite family of $k$-regular $d$-rigidity-expander graphs for every $d\ge 2$ and $k\ge 2d+1$. Conjecturally, no such family of $2d$-regular graphs exists. Second, we show that $a_d(K_n)\geq \frac{1}{2}\left\lfloor\frac{n}{d}\right\rfloor$, which we conjecture to be essentially tight. In addition, we study the extremal values $a_d(G)$ attained if $G$ is a minimally $d$-rigid graph.

A Rademacher-type exact formula for partitions without sequences
In this paper we prove an exact formula for the number of partitions without sequences. By work of Andrews, the corresponding generating function is a product of a modular form and a mock theta function, giving an overall weight of 0. The proof requires evaluating and bounding Kloosterman sums and the Circle Method

Some combinatorial interpretations of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems
We explore some connections between vectors of integers and integer partitions seen as bi-infinite words. This methodology enables us to give a combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald identities for affine root systems of the seven infinite families in terms of symplectic and special orthogonal Schur functions. From these results, we are able to derive $q$-Nekrasov--Okounkov formulas associated to each family. Nevertheless we only give results for types $\tilde{C}$ and $\tilde{C}^{\vee}$, and give a sketch of the proof for type $\tilde{C}$.

Asymptotics of dimer coverings on free boundary rail-yard graphs
Rail-yard graphs are a general class of graphs introduced in \cite{bbccr} on which the random dimer coverings form Schur processes. We study asymptotic limits of random dimer coverings on rail yard graphs with free boundary conditions on both the left boundary and the right boundary (double-sided free boundary) when the mesh sizes of the graphs go to 0. Each dimer covering corresponds to a sequence of interlacing partitions starting with an arbitrary partition and ending in an arbitrary partition. Under the assumption that the probability of each dimer covering is proportional to the product of weights of present edges, we obtain the moment formula for the height function which includes an infinite product. By passing down to the scaling limit, we compute the limit shape (law of large numbers) of the rescaled height functions and prove the convergence of unrescaled height fluctuations to a diffeomorphic image of the restriction of the 0-boundary Gaussian free field (central limit theorem) on the upper half plane to a subset. Applications include the limit shape and height fluctuations for free boundary steep tilings as proposed in \cite{BCC17}. The technique to obtain these results is to analyze a class of Macdonald processes with dual specializations, subject to further complexities arising from the infinite product in the moment formula. We also obtain a new algorithm to sample double-sided free boundary dimer coverings on rail-yard graphs, which fulfills an open problem in \cite{bbbccv14}.

Matrix Perturbation: Davis-Kahan in the Infinity Norm
Perturbation theory is developed to analyze the impact of noise on data and has been an essential part of numerical analysis. Recently, it has played an important role in designing and analyzing matrix algorithms. One of the most useful tools in this subject, the Davis-Kahan sine theorem, provides an $\ell_2$ error bound on the perturbation of the leading singular vectors (and spaces). We focus on the case when the signal matrix has low rank and the perturbation is random, which occurs often in practice. In an earlier paper, O'Rourke, Wang, and the second author showed that in this case, one can obtain an improved theorem. In particular, the noise-to-gap ratio condition in the original setting can be weakened considerably. In the current paper, we develop an infinity norm version of the O'Rourke-Vu-Wang result. The key ideas in the proof are a new bootstrapping argument and the so-called iterative leave-one-out method, which may be of independent interest. Applying the new bounds, we develop new, simple, and quick algorithms for several well-known problems, such as finding hidden partitions and matrix completion. The core of these new algorithms is the fact that one is now able to quickly approximate certain key objects in the infinity norm, which has critical advantages over approximations in the $\ell_2$ norm, Frobenius norm, or spectral norm.
The Strong Spectral Property of Graphs: Graph Operations and Barbell Partitions
The utility of a matrix satisfying the Strong Spectral Property has been well established particularly in connection with the inverse eigenvalue problem for graphs. More recently the class of graphs in which all associated symmetric matrices possess the Strong Spectral Property (denoted $G^{SSP}$) were studied, and along these lines we aim to study properties of graphs that exhibit a so-called barbell partition. Such a partition is a known impediment to membership in the class $G^{SSP}$. In particular we consider the existence of barbell partitions under various standard and useful graph operations.
Hook length biases and general linear partition inequalities
Motivated in part by hook-content formulas for certain restricted partitions in representation theory, we consider the total number of hooks of fixed length in odd versus distinct partitions. We show that there are more hooks of length $2$, respectively $3$, in all odd partitions of $n$ than in all distinct partitions of $n$, and make the analogous conjecture for arbitrary hook length $t \geq 2$. We also establish additional bias results on the number of gaps of size $1,$ respectively $2$, in all odd versus distinct partitions of $n$. We conjecture similar biases and asymptotics, as well as congruences for the number of hooks of fixed length in odd distinct partitions versus self-conjugate partitions. An integral component of the proof of our bias result for hooks of length $3$ is a linear inequality involving $q(n)$, the number of distinct partitions of $n$. In this article we also establish effective linear inequalities for $q(n)$ in great generality, a result which is of independent interest. Our methods are both analytic and combinatorial, and our results and conjectures intersect the areas of representation theory, analytic number theory, partition theory, and $q$-series. In particular, we use a Rademacher-type exact formula for $q(n),$ Wright's circle method, modularity, $q$-series transformations, asymptotic methods, and combinatorial arguments.

Boltzmann Distribution on "Short" Integer Partitions with Power Parts: Limit Laws and Sampling
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 159, August 2024, 102739 • View PublicationBIB
The paper is concerned with the asymptotic analysis of a family of Boltzmann (multiplicative) distributions over the set $\check{\varLambda}^{q}$ of strict integer partitions (i.e., with unequal parts) into perfect $q$-th powers. A combinatorial link is provided via a suitable conditioning by fixing the partition weight (the sum of parts) and length (the number of parts), leading to uniform distribution on the corresponding subspaces of partitions. The Boltzmann measure is calibrated through the hyper-parameters $\langle N\rangle$ and $\langle M\rangle$ controlling the expected weight and length, respectively. We study ``short'' partitions, where the parameter $\langle M\rangle$ is either fixed or grows slower than for typical plain (unconstrained) partitions. For this model, we obtain a variety of limit theorems including the asymptotics of the cumulative cardinality in the case of fixed $\langle M\rangle$ and a limit shape result in the case of slow growth of $\langle M\rangle$. In both cases, we also characterize the joint distribution of the weight and length, as well as the growth of the smallest and largest parts. Using these results we construct suitable sampling algorithms and analyse their performance.
Polarity on $H$-split graphs
Given nonnegative integers, $s$ and $k$, an $(s,k)$-polar partition of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A,B)$ of $V_G$ such that $G[A]$ and $\overline{G[B]}$ are complete multipartite graphs with at most $s$ and $k$ parts, respectively. If $s$ or $k$ is replaced by $\infty$, it means that there is no restriction on the number of parts of $G[A]$ or $\overline{G[B]}$, respectively. A graph admitting a $(1,1)$-polar partition is usually called a split graph. In this work, we present some results related to $(s,k)$-polar partitions on two graph classes generalizing split graphs. Our main results include efficient algorithms to decide whether a graph on these classes admits an $(s,k)$-polar partition, as well as upper bounds for the order of minimal $(s,k)$-polar obstructions on such graph families for any $s$ and $k$ (even if $s$ or $k$ is $\infty$).

On equivalences of polarized partition relations
The paper deals with two notions: polarized partition relations and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give pure combinatorial proof that existence of product of generalized strong sequences is equivalent to polarized partition relations.

Some remarks on polarized partition relations
This paper deals with two notions: a polarized partition relations $\left( \begin{array}{c} α β \end{array} \right) \to \left( \begin{array}{cc} γ& η δ& λ \end{array} \right)$ and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give the pure combinatorial proof that $\left( \begin{array}{c} α β \end{array} \right) \to \left( \begin{array}{cc} γ& η δ& λ \end{array} \right)$ is a consequence of the existence of product of generalized strong sequences.

Classification and enumeration of lattice polygons in a disc
In 1980, V. I. Arnold studied the classification problem for convex lattice polygons of given area. Since then, this problem and its analogues have been studied by many authors, including $\mathrm{B\acute{a}r\acute{a}ny}$, Lagarias, Pach, Santos, Ziegler and Zong. Recently, Zong proposed two computer programs to prove Hadwiger's covering conjecture and Borsuk's partition problem, respectively, based on enumeration of the convex lattice polytopes contained in certain balls. For this purpose, similar to $\mathrm{B\acute{a}r\acute{a}ny}$ and Pach's work on volume and Liu and Zong's work on cardinality, we obtain bounds on the number of non-equivalent convex lattice polygons in a given disc. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm to enumerate these convex lattice polygons.

Uniformly Random Colourings of Sparse Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyse uniformly random proper $k$-colourings of sparse graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ in the regime $Δ< k\ln k $. This regime corresponds to the lower side of the shattering threshold for random graph colouring, a paradigmatic example of the shattering threshold for random Constraint Satisfaction Problems. We prove a variety of results about the solution space geometry of colourings of fixed graphs, generalising work of Achlioptas, Coja-Oghlan, and Molloy on random graphs, and justifying the performance of stochastic local search algorithms in this regime. Our central proof relies only on elementary techniques, namely the first-moment method and a quantitative induction, yet it strengthens list-colouring results due to Vu, and more recently Davies, Kang, P., and Sereni, and generalises state-of-the-art bounds from Ramsey theory in the context of sparse graphs. It further yields an approximately tight lower bound on the number of colourings, also known as the partition function of the Potts model, with implications for efficient approximate counting.

Bounds for the number of multidimensional partitions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 120 (2024), 103982 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain estimates for the number $p_d(n)$ of $(d-1)$-dimensional integer partitions of a number $n$. It is known that the two-sided inequality $C_1(d)n^{1-1/d}<\log p_d(n)< C_2(d)n^{1-1/d}$ is always true and that $C_1(d)>1$ whenever $\log n> 3d$. However, establishing the $``$right$"$ dependence of $C_2$ on $d$ remained an open problem. We show that if $d$ is sufficiently small with respect to $n$, then $C_2$ does not depend on $d$, which means that $\log p_d(n)$ is up to an absolute constant equal to $n^{1-1/d}$. Besides, we provide estimates of $p_d(n)$ for different ranges of $d$ in terms of $n$, which give the asymptotics of $\log p_d(n)$ in each case.

Murnaghan-Nakayama rule and spin bitrace for the Hecke-Clifford Algebra
Published in Int. Mat. Res. Not. IMRN 19 (2023), 17060-17099 • View PublicationBIB
A Pfaffian-type Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is derived for the Hecke-Clifford algebra $\mathcal{H}^c_n$ based on the Frobenius formula and vertex operators, and this leads to a combinatorial version via the tableaux realization of Schur's $Q$-functions. As a consequence, a general formula for the irreducible characters $ζ^{\la}_μ(q)$ using partition-valued functions is derived. Meanwhile, an iterative formula on the indexing partition $\la$ via the Pieri rule is also deduced. As applications, some compact formulae of the irreducible characters are given for special partitions and a symmetric property of the irreducible character is found. We also introduce the spin bitrace as the analogue of the bitrace for the Hecke algebra and derive its general combinatorial formula. Tables of irreducible characters are listed for $n\leq7.$

Reciprocals of thinned exponential series
The reciprocal of $e^{-x}$ has a power series about $0$ in which all coefficients are non-negative. Gessel [Reciprocals of exponential polynomials and permutation enumeration, Australas. J. Combin., 74, 2019] considered truncates of the power series of $e^{-x}$, i.e. polynomials of the form $\sum_{n=0}^r (-1)^n\frac{x^n}{n!}$, and established combinatorially that the reciprocal of the truncate has a power series with all coefficients non-negative precisely when $r$ is odd. Here we extend Gessel's observations to arbitrary ``thinned exponential series''. To be precise, let $A \subseteq \{1,3,5,\ldots\}$ and $B \subseteq \{2,4,6,\ldots\}$, and consider the series \[ 1-\sum_{a \in A} \frac{x^a}{a!} + \sum_{b \in B} \frac{x^b}{b!}. \] We consider conditions on $A$ and $B$ that ensure that the reciprocal series has all coefficients non-negative. We give combinatorial proofs for a large set of conditions, including whenever $1 \in A$ and the endpoints of the maximal consecutive intervals in $A \cup B$ are odd integers. In particular, the coefficients in the reciprocal series can be interpreted as ordered set partitions of $[n]$ with block size restrictions, or in terms of permutations with restricted lengths of maximally increasing runs, suitably weighted.
The amoeba dimension of a linear space
Given a complex vector subspace $V$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$, the dimension of the amoeba of $V \cap (\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ depends only on the matroid that $V$ defines on the ground set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Here we prove that this dimension is given by the minimum of a certain function over all partitions of the ground set, as previously conjectured by Rau. We also prove that this formula can be evaluated in polynomial time.

Counting orbits under Kreweras complementation
The Kreweras complementation map is an anti-isomorphism on the lattice of noncrossing partitions. We consider an analogous operation for plane trees motivated by the molecular biology problem of RNA folding. In this context, we explicitly count the orbits of Kreweras' map according to their length as the number of appropriate symmetry classes of trees in the plane. These enumeration results are consolidated into a single implicit formula under the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Block-transitive 2-designs with a chain of imprimitive partitions
More than $30$ years ago, Delandtsheer and Doyen showed that the automorphism group of a block-transitive $2$-design, with blocks of size $k$, could leave invariant a nontrivial point-partition, but only if the number of points was bounded in terms of $k$. Since then examples have been found where there are two nontrivial point partitions, either forming a chain of partitions, or forming a grid structure on the point set. We show, by construction of infinite families of designs, that there is no limit on the length of a chain of invariant point partitions for a block-transitive $2$-design. We introduce the notion of an `array' of a set of points which describes how the set interacts with parts of the various partitions, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the `array' of a point set, relative to a partition chain, for it to be a block of such a design.
