Counting partitions by genus: a compendium of results
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 27 (2024), Article 24.2.6 • Search Publication
We study the enumeration of set partitions, according to their length, number of parts, cyclic type, and genus. We introduce genus-dependent Bell, Stirling numbers, and Faà di Bruno coefficients. Besides attempting to summarize what is already known on the subject, we obtain new generic results (in particular for partitions into two parts, for arbitrary genus), and present computer generated new data extending the number of terms known for sequences or families of such coefficients; this also leads to new conjectures.

Restricted partition functions and the $r$-log-concavity of quasi-polynomial-like functions
Let $\mathcal{A}=\left(a_i\right)_{i=1}^\infty$ be a weakly increasing sequence of positive integers and let $k$ be a fixed positive integer. For an arbitrary integer $n$, the restricted partition $p_\mathcal{A}(n,k)$ enumerates all the partitions of $n$ whose parts belong to the multiset $\{a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_k\}$. In this paper we investigate some generalizations of the log-concavity of $p_\mathcal{A}(n,k)$. We deal with both some basic extensions like, for instance, the strong log-concavity and a more intriguing challenge that is the $r$-log-concavity of both quasi-polynomial-like functions in general, and the restricted partition function in particular. For each of the problems, we present an efficient solution.

Fast Evaluation of Generalized Todd Polynomials: Applications to MacMahon's Partition Analysis and Integer Programming
The Todd polynomials, denoted as $td_k(b_1,b_2,\ldots,b_m)$, are characterised by their generating functions: $$\sum_{k\ge 0} td_k s^k = \prod_{i=1}^m \frac{b_i s}{e^{b_i s}-1}.$$ These polynomials serve as fundamental components in the Todd class of toric varieties, a concept of significant relevance in the study of lattice polytopes and number theory. We identify that generalised Todd polynomials emerge naturally within the framework of MacMahon's partition analysis, particularly in the context of computing Ehrhart series. We introduce an efficient method for the evaluation of generalised Todd polynomials for numerical values of $b_i$. This is achieved through the development of expedited operations in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}_p[[s]]$ modulo $s^{d}$, where $p$ is a large prime. The practical implications of our work are demonstrated through two applications: firstly, we facilitate a recalculated resolution of the Ehrhart series for magic squares of order 6, a problem initially addressed by the first author, reducing computation time from 70 days to approximately 1 day; secondly, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for Integer Linear Programming when the dimension is fixed, exhibiting a notable enhancement in computational efficiency.
The Game Chromatic Number of Complete Multipartite Graphs with No Singletons
In this paper we investigate the game chromatic number for complete multipartite graphs. We devise several strategies for Alice, and one strategy for Bob, and we prove their optimality in all complete multipartite graphs with no singletons. All the strategies presented are computable in linear time, and the values of the game chromatic number depend directly only on the number and the sizes of sets in the partition.

On uniquely packable trees
An $i$-packing in a graph $G$ is a set of vertices that are pairwise distance more than $i$ apart. A \emph{packing colouring} of $G$ is a partition $X=\{X_{1},X_{2},\ldots,X_{k}\}$ of $V(G)$ such that each colour class $X_{i}$ is an $i$-packing. The minimum order $k$ of a packing colouring is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $χ_ρ(G)$. In this paper we investigate the existence of trees $T$ for which there is only one packing colouring using $χ_ρ(T)$ colours. For the case $χ_ρ(T)=3$, we completely characterise all such trees. As a by-product we obtain sets of uniquely $3$-$χ_ρ$-packable trees with monotone $χ_ρ$-coloring and non-monotone $χ_ρ$-coloring respectively.

Cycles in Austrian Solitaire
Austrian Solitaire is a variation of Bulgarian Solitaire. It may be described as a card game, a method of asset inventory management, or a discrete dynamical system on integer partitions. We prove that the limit cycles in Austrian Solitaire do not depend on the initial configuration; in other words, each state space is connected. We show that a full Farey sequence completely characterizes these unique (and balanced) cycles.
Row-Column duality and combinatorial topological strings
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 57 065202, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Integrality properties of partial sums over irreducible representations, along columns of character tables of finite groups, were recently derived using combinatorial topological string theories (CTST). These CTST were based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theories of flat $G$-bundles for finite groups $G$ in two dimensions, denoted $G$-TQFTs. We define analogous combinatorial topological strings related to two dimensional TQFTs based on fusion coefficients of finite groups. These TQFTs are denoted as $R(G)$-TQFTs and allow analogous integrality results to be derived for partial row sums of characters over conjugacy classes along fixed rows. This relation between the $G$-TQFTs and $R(G)$-TQFTs defines a row-column duality for character tables, which provides a physical framework for exploring the mathematical analogies between rows and columns of character tables. These constructive proofs of integrality are complemented with the proof of similar and complementary results using the more traditional Galois theoretic framework for integrality properties of character tables. The partial row and column sums are used to define generalised partitions of the integer row and column sums, which are of interest in combinatorial representation theory.

Splitting the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties and e-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions
For each indifference graph, there is an associated regular semisimple Hessenberg variety, whose cohomology recovers the chromatic symmetric function of the graph. The decomposition theorem applied to the forgetful map from the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to the projective space describes the cohomology of the Hessenberg variety as a sum of smaller pieces. We give a combinatorial description of the Frobenius character of each piece. This provides a generalization of the symmetric functions attached to Stanley's local h-polynomials of the permutahedral variety to any Hessenberg variety. As a consequence, we can prove that the coefficient of $e_λ$, where $λ$ is any partition of length 2, in the e-expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of any indifference graph is non-negative.

On the relationship between shortlex order and $A_α$-spectral radii of graphs with starlike branch tree
Let $P(n)$ denote the set of all partitions of $n$, whose elements are nondecreasing sequences of positive integers whose sum is $n$. For ${\bf a}=( n_{1}, n_{2},\ldots, n_{d}) \in P(n)$, let $G({\bf a},v)$ denote the graph obtained from connected graph $G$ appending $d$ paths with lengths $n_{1},n_{2},\ldots,n_{d}$ on vertex $v$ of $G$. We show that the ordering of graphs in $G_{n}(v)=\{ G({\bf a},v) \mid {\bf a} \in P(n) \}$ by $A_α$-spectral radii coincides with the shortlex ordering of $P(n)$.
Singleton Coalition Graph Chains
Let $G$ be graph with vertex set $V$ and order $n=|V|$. A coalition in $G$ is a combination of two distinct sets, $A\subseteq V$ and $B\subseteq V$, which are disjoint and are not dominating sets of $G$, but $A\cup B$ is a dominating set of $G$. A coalition partition of $G$ is a partition $\mathcal{P}=\{S_1,\ldots,S_k\}$ of its vertex set $V$, where each set $S_i\in \mathcal{P}$ is either a dominating set of $G$ with only one vertex, or it is not a dominating set but forms a coalition with some other set $S_j \in \mathcal{P}$. The coalition number $C(G)$ is the maximum cardinality of a coalition partition of $G$. To represent a coalition partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $G$, a coalition graph $\CG(G, \mathcal{P})$ is created, where each vertex of the graph corresponds to a member of $\mathcal{P}$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their corresponding sets form a coalition in $G$. A coalition partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $G$ is a singleton coalition partition if every set in $\mathcal{P}$ consists of a single vertex. If a graph $G$ has a singleton coalition partition, then $G$ is referred to as a singleton-partition graph. A graph $H$ is called a singleton coalition graph of a graph $G$ if there exists a singleton coalition partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $G$ such that the coalition graph $\CG(G,\mathcal{P})$ is isomorphic to $H$. A singleton coalition graph chain with an initial graph $G_1$ is defined as the sequence $G_1\rightarrow G_2\rightarrow G_3\rightarrow\cdots$ where all graphs $G_i$ are singleton-partition graphs, and $\CG(G_i,Γ_1)=G_{i+1}$, where $Γ_1$ represents a singleton coalition partition of $G_i$. In this paper, we address two open problems posed by Haynes et al. We characterize all graphs $G$ of order $n$ and minimum degree $δ(G)=2$ such that $C(G)=n$ and investigate the singleton coalition graph chain starting with graphs $G$ where $δ(G)\le 2$.

Asymptotics for $k$-crank of $k$-colored partitions
In this paper, we obtain asymptotic formulas for $k$-crank of $k$-colored partitions. Let $M_k(a, c; n)$ denote the number of $k$-colored partitions of $n$ with a $k$-crank congruent to $a$ mod $c$. For the cases $k=2,3,4$, Fu and Tang derived several inequality relations for $M_k(a, c; n)$ using generating functions. We employ the Hardy-Ramanujan Circle Method to extend the results of Fu and Tang. Furthermore, additional inequality relations for $M_k(a, c; n)$ have been established, such as logarithmic concavity and logarithmic subadditivity.

Jack Derangements
For each integer partition $λ\vdash n$ we give a simple combinatorial expression for the sum of the Jack character $θ^λ_α$ over the integer partitions of $n$ with no singleton parts. For $α= 1,2$ this gives closed forms for the eigenvalues of the permutation and perfect matching derangement graphs, resolving an open question in algebraic graph theory. A byproduct of the latter is a simple combinatorial formula for the immanants of the matrix $J-I$ where $J$ is the all-ones matrix, which might be of independent interest. Our proofs center around a Jack analogue of a hook product related to Cayley's $Ω$--process in classical invariant theory, which we call the principal lower hook product.

Fiedler vectors with unbalanced sign patterns
In spectral bisection, a Fielder vector is used for partitioning a graph into two connected subgraphs according to its sign pattern. In this article, we investigate graphs having Fiedler vectors with unbalanced sign patterns such that a partition can result in two connected subgraphs that are distinctly different in size. We present a characterization of graphs having a Fiedler vector with exactly one negative component, and discuss some classes of such graphs. We also establish an analogous result for regular graphs with a Fiedler vector with exactly two negative components. In particular, we examine the circumstances under which any Fiedler vector has unbalanced sign pattern according to the number of vertices with minimum degree.

$G^{+}$ Method in Action: New Classes of Nonnegative Matrices with Results
The $G^{+}$ method is a new method, a powerful one, for the study of (homogeneous and nonhomogeneous) products of nonnegative matrices -- for problems on the products of nonnegative matrices. To study such products, new classes of matrices are introduced: that of the sum-positive matrices, that of the $\left[ Δ\right] $-positive matrices on partitions (of the column index sets), that of the $g_{k}^{+}$-matrices... On the other hand, the $g_{k}^{+}$-matrices lead to necessary and sufficient conditions for the $k$-connected graphs. Using the $G^{+}$ method, we prove old and new results (Wielandt Theorem and a generalization of it, etc.) on the products of nonnegative matrices -- mainly, sum-positive, $\left[ Δ\right] $-positive on partitions, irreducible, primitive, reducible, fully indecomposable, scrambling, or Sarymsakov matrices, in some cases the matrices being, moreover, $g_{k}^{+}$-matrices (not only irreducible).

Feynman symmetries of the Martin and $c_2$ invariants of regular graphs
Published in Combinatorial Theory 5 (1), 2025, #10 • View PublicationBIB
For every regular graph, we define a sequence of integers, using the recursion of the Martin polynomial. This sequence counts spanning tree partitions and constitutes the diagonal coefficients of powers of the Kirchhoff polynomial. We prove that this sequence respects all known symmetries of Feynman period integrals in quantum field theory. We show that other quantities with this property, the $c_2$ invariant and the extended graph permanent, are essentially determined by our new sequence. This proves the completion conjecture for the $c_2$ invariant at all primes, and also that it is fixed under twists. We conjecture that our invariant is perfect: Two Feynman periods are equal, if and only if, their Martin sequences are equal.

Digraph Colouring and Arc-Connectivity
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the minimum size of a partition of its vertices into acyclic induced subgraphs. We denote by $λ(D)$ the maximum local edge connectivity of a digraph $D$. Neumann-Lara proved that for every digraph $D$, $\vecχ(D) \leq λ(D) + 1$. In this paper, we characterize the digraphs $D$ for which $\vecχ(D) = λ(D) + 1$. This generalizes an analogue result for undirected graph proved by Stiebitz and Toft as well as the directed version of Brooks' Theorem proved by Mohar. Along the way, we introduce a generalization of Hajós join that gives a new way to construct families of dicritical digraphs that is of independent interest.

Unfriendly partitions when avoiding vertices of finite degree
An unfriendly partition of a graph $G = (V,E)$ is a function $c: V \to 2$ such that $|\{x\in N(v): c(x)\neq c(v)\}|\geq |\{x\in N(v): c(x)=c(v)\}|$ for every vertex $v\in V$, where $N(v)$ denotes its neighborhood. It was conjectured by Cowen and Emerson that every graph has an unfriendly partition, but Milner and Shelah found counterexamples for that statement by analyzing graphs with uncountably many vertices. Curiously, none of their graphs have vertices with finite degree. Therefore, as a natural direction to approach, in this paper we search for the least cardinality of a graph with that property that admits no unfriendly partitions. Actually, among some other independence results, we conclude that this size cannot be determined from the usual axioms of set theory.

Hypergraph Animals
Here we introduce simple structures for the analysis of complex hypergraphs, hypergraph animals. These structures are designed to describe the local node neighbourhoods of nodes in hypergraphs. We establish their relationships to lattice animals and network motifs, and we develop their combinatorial properties for sparse and uncorrelated hypergraphs. We make use of the tight link of hypergraph animals to partition numbers, which opens up a vast mathematical framework for the analysis of hypergraph animals. We then study their abundances in random hypergraphs. Two transferable insights result from this analysis: (i) it establishes the importance of high-cardinality edges in ensembles of random hypergraphs that are inspired by the classical Erdös-Renyí random graphs; and (ii) there is a close connection between degree and hyperedge cardinality in random hypergraphs that shapes animal abundances and spectra profoundly. Both findings imply that hypergraph animals can have the potential to affect information flow and processing in complex systems. Our analysis of also suggests that we need to spend more effort on investigating and developing suitable conditional ensembles of random hypergraphs that can capture real-world structures and their complex dependency structures.
