Automorphisms of infinite Johnson graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the {\it infinite Johnson graph} $J_{\infty}$ whose vertex set consists of all subsets $X\subset {\mathbb N}$ satisfying $|X|=|{\mathbb N}\setminus X|=\infty$ and whose edges are pairs of such subsets $X,Y$ satisfying $|X\setminus Y|=|Y\setminus X|=1$. An automorphism of $J_{\infty}$ is said to be {\it regular} if it is induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ or it is the composition of the automorphism induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ and the automorphism $X\to {\mathbb N}\setminus X$. The graph $J_{\infty}$ admits non-regular automorphisms. Our first result states that the restriction of every automorphism of $J_{\infty}$ to any connected component ($J_{\infty}$ is not connected) coincides with the restriction of a regular automorphism. The second result is a characterization of regular automorphisms of $J_{\infty}$ as order preserving and order reversing bijective transformations of the vertex set of $J_{\infty}$ (the vertex set is partially ordered by the inclusion relation). As an application, we describe automorphisms of the associated {\it infinite Kneser graph}.

The Hopf algebra of diagonal rectangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define and study a combinatorial Hopf algebra dRec with basis elements indexed by diagonal rectangulations of a square. This Hopf algebra provides an intrinsic combinatorial realization of the Hopf algebra tBax of twisted Baxter permutations, which previously had only been described extrinsically as a sub Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. We describe the natural lattice structure on diagonal rectangulations, analogous to the Tamari lattice on triangulations, and observe that diagonal rectangulations index the vertices of a polytope analogous to the associahedron. We give an explicit bijection between twisted Baxter permutations and the better-known Baxter permutations, and describe the resulting Hopf algebra structure on Baxter permutations.
Orders induced by segments in floorplan partitions and (2-14-3,3-41-2)-avoiding permutations
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20, 2 (2013) P35 • View PublicationBIB
A floorplan is a tiling of a rectangle by rectangles. There are natural ways to order the elements---rectangles and segments---of a floorplan. Ackerman, Barequet and Pinter studied a pair of orders induced by neighborhood relations between rectangles, and obtained a natural bijection between these pairs and (2-41-3, 3-14-2)-avoiding permutations, also known as (reduced) Baxter permutations. In the present paper, we first perform a similar study for a pair of orders induced by neighborhood relations between segments of a floorplan. We obtain a natural bijection between these pairs and another family of permutations, namely (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations. Then, we investigate relations between the two kinds of pairs of orders---and, correspondingly, between (2-41-3, 3-14-2)- and (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations. In particular, we prove that the superposition of both permutations gives a complete Baxter permutation (originally called w-admissible, by Baxter and Joichi in the sixties). In other words, (2-14-3, 3-41-2)-avoiding permutations are the hidden part of complete Baxter permutations. We enumerate these permutations. To our knowledge, the characterization of these permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and their enumeration are both new results. Finally, we also study the special case of the so-called guillotine floorplans.

Mask formulas for cograssmannian Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 17 (2013), p. 151-203 • View PublicationBIB
We give two contructions of sets of masks on cograssmannian permutations that can be used in Deodhar's formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. The constructions are respectively based on a formula of Lascoux-Schutzenberger and its geometric interpretation by Zelevinsky. The first construction relies on a basis of the Hecke algebra constructed from principal lower order ideals in Bruhat order and a translation of this basis into sets of masks. The second construction relies on an interpretation of masks as cells of the Bott-Samelson resolution. These constructions give distinct answers to a question of Deodhar.

Enumeration of snakes and cycle-alternating permutations
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 60(3) (2014), 279--305 • Search Publication
Springer numbers are an analog of Euler numbers for the group of signed permutations. Arnol'd showed that they count some objects called snakes, that generalize alternating permutations. Hoffman established a link between Springer numbers, snakes, and some polynomials related with the successive derivatives of trigonometric functions. The goal of this article is to give further combinatorial properties of derivative polynomials, in terms of snakes and other objects: cycle-alternating permutations, weighted Dyck or Motzkin paths, increasing trees and forests. We obtain the generating functions, in terms of trigonometric functions for exponential ones and in terms of J-fractions for ordinary ones. We also define natural q-analogs, make a link with normal ordering problems and combinatorial theory of differential equations.

Spin models constructed from Hadamard matrices
Published in Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computing 40 (2012), 231-248 • View PublicationBIB
A spin model (for link invariants) is a square matrix $W$ which satisfies certain axioms. For a spin model $W$, it is known that $W^TW^{-1}$ is a permutation matrix, and its order is called the index of $W$. F. Jaeger and K. Nomura found spin models of index 2, by modifying the construction of symmetric spin models from Hadamard matrices. The aim of this paper is to give a construction of spin models of an arbitrary even index from any Hadamard matrix. In particular, we show that our spin models of indices a power of 2 are new.
Minimal Permutations and 2-Regular Skew Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bouvel and Pergola introduced the notion of minimal permutations in the study of the whole genome duplication-random loss model for genome rearrangements. Let $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ denote the set of minimal permutations of length $n$ with $d$ descents, and let $f_d(n)= |\mathcal{F}_d(n)|$. They derived that $f_{n-2}(n)=2^{n}-(n-1)n-2$ and $f_n(2n)=C_n$, where $C_n$ is the $n$-th Catalan number. Mansour and Yan proved that $f_{n+1}(2n+1)=2^{n-2}nC_{n+1}$. In this paper, we consider the problem of counting minimal permutations in $\mathcal{F}_d(n)$ with a prescribed set of ascents. We show that such structures are in one-to-one correspondence with a class of skew Young tableaux, which we call $2$-regular skew tableaux. Using the determinantal formula for the number of skew Young tableaux of a given shape, we find an explicit formula for $f_{n-3}(n)$. Furthermore, by using the Knuth equivalence, we give a combinatorial interpretation of a formula for a refinement of the number $f_{n+1}(2n+1)$.

The fine structure of 321 avoiding involutions
We study the involutions belonging to the class of 321 avoiding permutations. We calculate the algebraic generating functions of the set containing the involutions avoiding 321 and of some of its subsets. Precisely we determine the algebraic generating functions of the involutions that are expansions of 12, of those expansions of 21, of the simple ones and of their expansions. The graphics of the simple involutions are caracterized. Being the simple involutions avoiding 321 counted by Riordan's numbers, a combinatoric interpretation of the results is illustrated through a class of Motzkin paths. Another interpretation is given through Dyck paths.

On the enumeration of d-minimal permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We suggest an approach for the enumeration of minimal permutations having d descents which uses skew Young tableaux. We succeed in finding a general expression for the number of such permutations in terms of (several) sums of determinants. We then generalize the class of skew Young tableaux under consideration; this allows in particular to discover some presumably new results concerning Eulerian numbers.

On quasi-thin association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
An association scheme is called quasi-thin if the valency of each its basic relation is one or two. A quasi-thin scheme is Kleinian if the thin residue of it forms a Klein group with respect to the relation product. It is proved that any Kleinian scheme arises from near-pencil on~$3$ points, or affine or projective plane of order~$2$. The main result is that any non-Kleinian quasi-thin scheme a) is the two-orbit scheme of a suitable permutation group, and b) is characterized up to isomorphism by its intersection number array. An infinite family of Kleinian quasi-thin schemes for which neither a) nor b) holds is also constructed.

Bijective counting of involutive Baxter permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate bijectively the family of involutive Baxter permutations according to various parameters; in particular we obtain an elementary proof that the number of involutive Baxter permutations of size $2n$ with no fixed points is $\frac{3\cdot 2^{n-1}}{(n+1)(n+2)}\binom{2n}{n}$, a formula originally discovered by M. Bousquet-Mélou using generating functions. The same coefficient also enumerates planar maps with $n$ edges, endowed with an acyclic orientation having a unique source, and such that the source and sinks are all incident to the outer face.

Equivalence classes for the mu-coefficient of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in S_n
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study equivalence classes relating to the Kazhdan-Lusztig mu(x,w) coefficients in order to help explain the scarcity of distinct values. Each class is conjectured to contain a "crosshatch" pair. We also compute the values attained by mu(x,w) for the permutation groups S_10 and S_11.

Tridiagonal matrices with nonnegative entries
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we characterize the nonnegative irreducible tridiagonal matrices and their permutations, using certain entries in their primitive idempotents. Our main result is summarized as follows. Let $d$ denote a nonnegative integer. Let $A$ denote a matrix in $\matR$ and let $\{þ_i\}_{i=0}^d$ denote the roots of the characteristic polynomial of $A$. We say $A$ is multiplicity-free whenever these roots are mutually distinct and contained in $\R$. In this case $E_i$ will denote the primitive idempotent of $A$ associated with $þ_i$ $(0 \leq i \leq d)$. We say $A$ is symmetrizable whenever there exists an invertible diagonal matrix $Δ\in \matR$ such that $ΔA Δ^{-1}$ is symmetric. Let $Γ(A)$ denote the directed graph with vertex set $\{0,1,...,d\}$, where $i \rightarrow j$ whenever $i \neq j$ and $A_{ij} \neq 0$. Theorem: Assume that each entry of $A$ is nonnegative. Then the following are equivalent for $0 \leq s,t \leq d$: (i) The graph $Γ(A)$ is a bidirected path with endpoints $s$, $t$: (ii) The matrix $A$ is symmetrizable and multiplicity-free. Moreover the $(s,t)$-entry of $E_i$ times $(þ_i-þ_0)...(þ_i-þ_{i-1})(þ_i-þ_{i+1})...(þ_i-þ_d)$ is independent of $i$ for $0 \leq i \leq d$, and this common value is nonzero. Recently Kurihara and Nozaki obtained a theorem that characterizes the $Q$-polynomial property for symmetric association schemes. We view the above result as a linear algebraic generalization of their theorem.

Combinatorial Models of Creation-Annihilation
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 65, Art. B65c (2011) • Search Publication
Quantum physics has revealed many interesting formal properties associated with the algebra of two operators, A and B, satisfying the partial commutation relation AB-BA=1. This study surveys the relationships between classical combinatorial structures and the reduction to normal form of operator polynomials in such an algebra. The connection is achieved through suitable labelled graphs, or "diagrams", that are composed of elementary "gates". In this way, many normal form evaluations can be systematically obtained, thanks to models that involve set partitions, permutations, increasing trees, as well as weighted lattice paths. Extensions to q-analogues, multivariate frameworks, and urn models are also briefly discussed.

Polynomial-time sortable stacks of burnt pancakes
Published in Theor. Comput. Sci. 412(8-10): 695-702 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
Pancake flipping, a famous open problem in computer science, can be formalised as the problem of sorting a permutation of positive integers using as few prefix reversals as possible. In that context, a prefix reversal of length k reverses the order of the first k elements of the permutation. The burnt variant of pancake flipping involves permutations of signed integers, and reversals in that case not only reverse the order of elements but also invert their signs. Although three decades have now passed since the first works on these problems, neither their computational complexity nor the maximal number of prefix reversals needed to sort a permutation is yet known. In this work, we prove a new lower bound for sorting burnt pancakes, and show that an important class of permutations, known as "simple permutations", can be optimally sorted in polynomial time.

The Weak Bruhat Order and Separable Permutations
In this paper we consider the rank generating function of a separable permutation $π$ in the weak Bruhat order on the two intervals $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, where $w_0 = n,(n-1),..., 1$. We show a surprising result that the product of these two generating functions is the generating function for the symmetric group with the weak order. We then obtain explicit formulas for the rank generating functions on $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, which leads to the rank-symmetry and unimodality of the two graded posets.

Using homological duality in consecutive pattern avoidance
Published in Electron. J. Combin, 18(2) (2011), • View PublicationBIB
Using the approach suggested in [arXiv:1002.2761] we present below a sufficient condition guaranteeing that two collections of patterns of permutations have the same exponential generating functions for the number of permutations avoiding elements of these collections as consecutive patterns. In short, the coincidence of the latter generating functions is guaranteed by a length-preserving bijection of patterns in these collections which is identical on the overlappings of pairs of patterns where the overlappings are considered as unordered sets. Our proof is based on a direct algorithm for the computation of the inverse generating functions. As an application we present a large class of patterns where this algorithm is fast and, in particular, allows to obtain a linear ordinary differential equation with polynomial coefficients satisfied by the inverse generating function.

On a conjecture of H. Gupta
Published • View PublicationBIB
Denote by r(n) the length of a shortest integer sequence on a circle containing all permutations of the set {1,2,...,n} as subsequences. Hansraj Gupta conjectured in 1981 that r(n) <= n^2/2. In this paper we confirm the conjecture for the case where n is even, and show that r(n) < n^2/2 + n/4 -1 if n is odd.
Partitions and Partial Matchings Avoiding Neighbor Patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the generating functions for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and for partial matchings avoiding neighbor alignments and left nestings. We show that there is a bijection between partial matchings avoiding three neighbor patterns (neighbor alignments, left nestings and right nestings) and set partitions avoiding right nestings via an intermediate structure of integer compositions. Such integer compositions are known to be in one-to-one correspondence with self-modified ascent sequences or $3\bar{1}52\bar{4}$-avoiding permutations, as shown by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev.
