The number of permutations realized by a shift
Published in S. Elizalde, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009), 765-786 • View PublicationBIB
A permutation p is realized by the shift on N symbols if there is an infinite word on an N-letter alphabet whose successive left shifts by one position are lexicographically in the same relative order as p. The set of realized permutations is closed under consecutive pattern containment. Permutations that cannot be realized are called forbidden patterns. It was shown in [Amigo, Elizalde, Kennel, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 115 (2008) 485-504] that the shortest forbidden patterns of the shift on N symbols have length N+2. In this paper we give a characterization of the set of permutations that are realized by the shift on N symbols, and we enumerate them according to their length.

On basic forbidden patterns of functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The allowed patterns of a map on a one-dimensional interval are those permutations that are realized by the relative order of the elements in its orbits. The set of allowed patterns is completely determined by the minimal patterns that are not allowed. These are called basic forbidden patterns. In this paper we study basic forbidden patterns of several functions. We show that the logistic map L_r(x)=rx(1-x) and some generalizations have infinitely many of them for 1<r<=4, and we give a lower bound on the number of basic forbidden patterns of L_4 of each length. Next, we give an upper bound on the length of the shortest forbidden pattern of a piecewise monotone map. Finally, we provide some necessary conditions for a set of permutations to be the set of basic forbidden patterns of such a map.

On Minimum Saturated Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the work of Anstee, Griggs, and Sali on forbidden submatrices and the extremal sat-function for graphs, we introduce sat-type problems for matrices. Let F be a family of k-row matrices. A matrix M is called F-admissible if M contains no submatrix G\in F (as a row and column permutation of G). A matrix M without repeated columns is F-saturated if M is F-admissible but the addition of any column not present in M violates this property. In this paper we consider the function sat(n,F) which is the minimum number of columns of an F-saturated matrix with n rows. We establish the estimate sat(n,F)=O(n^{k-1}) for any family F of k-row matrices and also compute the sat-function for a few small forbidden matrices.
On maximal weakly separated set-systems
Published in J. of Algebraic Combinatorics, 32, 2010, 497-531 • View PublicationBIB
For a permutation $ω\in S_n$, Leclerc and Zelevinsky \cite{LZ} introduced a concept of $ω$-{\em chamber weakly separated collection} of subsets of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ and conjectured that all inclusion-wise maximal collections of this sort have the same cardinality $\ell(ω)+n+1$, where $\ell(ω)$ is the length of $ω$. We answer affirmatively this conjecture and present a generalization and additional results.
Note on powers in three interval exchange transformations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study repetitions in infinite words coding exchange of three intervals with permutation (3,2,1), called 3iet words. The language of such words is determined by two parameters $\varepsilon,\ell$. We show that finiteness of the index of 3iet words is equivalent to boundedness of the coefficients of the continued fraction of $\varepsilon$. In this case we also give an upper and lower estimate on the index of the corresponding 3iet word.

A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals
Published in American Journal of Mathematics 134 (2012), 1089-1137 • View PublicationBIB
Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in: * combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82]; * the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and * a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading. Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.

A note on the total number of cycles of even and odd permutations
Published in Discrete Math., 310 (2010) 1398-1400 • View PublicationBIB
We prove bijectively that the total number of cycles of all even permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and the total number of cycles of all odd permutations of $[n]$ differ by $(-1)^n(n-2)!$, which was stated as an open problem by Miklós Bóna. We also prove bijectively the following more general identity: $$\sum_{i=1}^n c(n,i)\cdot i \cdot (-k)^{i-1} = (-1)^k k! (n-k-1)!,$$ where $c(n,i)$ denotes the number of permutations of $[n]$ with $i$ cycles.

Graphs as rotations
Using a notation of corner between edges when graph has a fixed rotation, i.e. cyclical order of edges around vertices, we define combinatorial objects - combinatorial maps as pairs of permutations, one for vertices and one for faces. Further, we define multiplication of these objects, that coincides with the multiplication of permutations. We consider closed under multiplication classes of combinatorial maps that consist of closed classes of combinatorial maps with fixed edges where each such class is defined by a knot. One class among them is special, containing selfconjugate maps.

Permutations with Ascending and Descending Blocks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate permutations in terms of their cycle structure and descent set. To do this, we generalize the classical bijection of Gessel and Reutenauer to deal with permutations that have some ascending and some descending blocks. We then provide the first bijective proofs of some known results. We also solve some problems posed in [3] by Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund, who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths.

The structure of alternative tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. These tableaux are in simple bijection with permutation tableaux, defined previously by Postnikov . We exhibit a simple recursive structure for alternative tableaux. From this decomposition, we can easily deduce a number of enumerative results. We also give bijections between these tableaux and certain classes of labeled trees. Finally, we exhibit a bijection with permutations, and relate it to some other bijections that already appeared in the literature.
New pattern matching conditions for wreath products of the cyclic groups with symmetric groups
We present several multi-variable generating functions for a new pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group. Our new pattern matching condition requires that the underlying permutations match in the usual sense of pattern matching for the symmetric group and that the corresponding sequence of signs match in the sense of words, rather than the exact equality of signs which has been previously studied. We produce the generating functions for the number of matches that occur in elements of the wreath product for any pattern of length 2 by applying appropriate homomorphisms from the ring of symmetric functions over an infinite number of variables to simple symmetric function identities. We also provide multi-variable generating functions for the distribution of non-overlapping matches and for the number of elements of the wreath product which have exactly 2 matches which do not overlap for several patterns of length 2.

New Hopf Structures on Binary Trees (Extended Abstract)
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multiplihedra {M_n} form a family of polytopes originating in the study of higher categories and homotopy theory. While the multiplihedra may be unfamiliar to the algebraic combinatorics community, it is nestled between two families of polytopes that certainly are not: the permutahedra {S_n} and associahedra {Y_n}. The maps between these families reveal several new Hopf structures on tree-like objects nestled between the Malvenuto-Reutenauer (MR) Hopf algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco (LR) Hopf algebra of planar binary trees. We begin their study here, constructing a module over MR and a Hopf module over LR from the multiplihedra. Rich structural information about this module is uncovered via a change of basis--using Möbius inversion in posets built on the 1-skeleta of the {M_n}. Our analysis uses the notion of an interval retract, which should have independent interest in poset combinatorics. It also reveals new families of polytopes, and even a new factorization of a known projection from the associahedra to hypercubes.

Geometric combinatorial algebras: cyclohedron and simplex
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics Volume 32, Number 4, 597-627, (2010) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we report on results of our investigation into the algebraic structure supported by the combinatorial geometry of the cyclohedron. Our new graded algebra structures lie between two well known Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco algebra of binary trees. Connecting algebra maps arise from a new generalization of the Tonks projection from the permutohedron to the associahedron, which we discover via the viewpoint of the graph associahedra of Carr and Devadoss. At the same time that viewpoint allows exciting geometrical insights into the multiplicative structure of the algebras involved. Extending the Tonks projection also reveals a new graded algebra structure on the simplices. Finally this latter is extended to a new graded Hopf algebra (one-sided) with basis all the faces of the simplices.

Random permutations with cycle weights
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2011, Vol. 21, No. 1, 312-331 • View PublicationBIB
We study the distribution of cycle lengths in models of nonuniform random permutations with cycle weights. We identify several regimes. Depending on the weights, the length of typical cycles grows like the total number $n$ of elements, or a fraction of $n$ or a logarithmic power of $n$.

Descent polynomials for permutations with bounded drop size
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by juggling sequences and bubble sort, we examine permutations on the set {1,2,...,n} with d descents and maximum drop size k. We give explicit formulas for enumerating such permutations for given integers k and d. We also derive the related generating functions and prove unimodality and symmetry of the coefficients.
The Mahonian probability distribution on words is asymptotically normal
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Mahonian statistic is the number of inversions in a permutation of a multiset with $a_i$ elements of type $i$, $1\le i\le m$. The counting function for this statistic is the $q$ analog of the multinomial coefficient $\binom{a_1+...+a_m}{a_1,... a_m}$, and the probability generating function is the normalization of the latter. We give two proofs that the distribution is asymptotically normal. The first is {\it computer-assisted}, based on the method of moments. The Maple package {\tt MahonianStat}, available from the webpage of this article, can be used by the reader to perform experiments and calculations. Our second proof uses characteristic functions. We then take up the study of a local limit theorem to accompany our central limit theorem. Here our result is less general, and we must be content with a conjecture about further work. Our local limit theorem permits us to conclude that the coeffiecients of the $q$-multinomial are log-concave, provided one stays near the center (where the largest coefficients reside.)

A new explicit formula for Kerov polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a formula expressing the Kerov polynomial $Σ_k$ as a weighted sum over the lattice of noncrossing partitions of the set $\{1,...,k+1\}$. In particular, such a formula is related to a partial order $\mirr$ on the Lehner's irreducible noncrossing partitions which can be described in terms of left-to-right minima and maxima, descents and excedances of permutations. This provides a translation of the formula in terms of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $\frak{S}_k$ and allows us to recover the coefficients of $Σ_k$ by means of the posets $P_k$ and $Q_k$ of pattern-avoiding permutations discovered by Bóna and Simion. We also obtain symmetric functions specializing in the coefficients of $Σ_k$.

On Young tableau involutions and patterns in permutations
This thesis deals with three different aspects of the combinatorics of permutations. In the first two papers, two flavours of pattern avoiding permutations are examined; and in the third paper Young tableaux, which are closely related to permutations via representation theory, are studied. In the first paper we give solutations to several interesting problems regarding pattern avoiding doubly alternating permutations, such as finding a bijection between 1234-avoiding permutations and 1234-avoiding doubly alternating permutations of twice the size. In the second paper partial permutations which can be extended to pattern avoiding permutations are examined. A general algorithm is presented which is subsequently used to solve many different problems. The third paper deals with involutions on Young tableaux. There is a surprisingly large collection of relations among these involutions and in the paper we make the effort to study them systematically in order to create a coherent theory. The most interesting result is that for Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, $a^3=1$, wher5e $a$ is the composition of three different involutions: the fundamental symmetry map, the reversal and rotation involutions.

Profiles of permutations
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 16(1) (2009), #R99 • View PublicationBIB
This paper develops an analogy between the cycle structure of, on the one hand, random permutations with cycle lengths restricted to lie in an infinite set $S$ with asymptotic density $σ$ and, on the other hand, permutations selected according to the Ewens distribution with parameter $σ$. In particular we show that the asymptotic expected number of cycles of random permutations of $[n]$ with all cycles even, with all cycles odd, and chosen from the Ewens distribution with parameter 1/2 are all ${1 \over 2} \log n + O(1)$, and the variance is of the same order. Furthermore, we show that in permutations of $[n]$ chosen from the Ewens distribution with parameter $σ$, the probability of a random element being in a cycle longer than $γn$ approaches $(1-γ)^σ$ for large $n$. The same limit law holds for permutations with cycles carrying multiplicative weights with average $σ$. We draw parallels between the Ewens distribution and the asymptotic-density case and explain why these parallels should exist using permutations drawn from weighted Boltzmann distributions.

$q$-exchangeability via quasi-invariance
Published in Annals of Probability 2010, Vol. 38, No. 6, 2103-2135 • View PublicationBIB
For positive $q\neq1$, the $q$-exchangeability of an infinite random word is introduced as quasi-invariance under permutations of letters, with a special cocycle which accounts for inversions in the word. This framework allows us to extend the $q$-analog of de Finetti's theorem for binary sequences---see Gnedin and Olshanski [Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009) R78]---to general real-valued sequences. In contrast to the classical case of exchangeability ($q=1$), the order on $\mathbb{R}$ plays a significant role for the $q$-analogs. An explicit construction of ergodic $q$-exchangeable measures involves random shuffling of $\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,...\}$ by iteration of the geometric choice. Connections are established with transient Markov chains on $q$-Pascal pyramids and invariant random flags over the Galois fields.
