In our companion paper, we develop a new $SL_4$-web basis. Basis elements are given by certain planar graphs and are constructed so that important algebraic operations can be performed diagrammatically. A guiding principle behind our construction is that the long cycle $(12\ldots n) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ should act by rotation of webs. Moreover, the bijection between webs and tableaux should intertwine rotation with the promotion action on tableaux.
In this paper, we develop necessary notions of promotion permutations and promotion matrices, which are new even for standard tableaux. To support inductive arguments in the companion paper, we must however work in the more general setting of fluctuating tableaux, which we introduce and which subsumes many classes of tableaux that have been previously studied, including (generalized) oscillating, vacillating, rational, alternating, and (semi)standard tableaux. Therefore, we also give here a full development of the basic combinatorics and representation theory of fluctuating tableaux.
Bounds on the genus for 2-cell embeddings of prefix-reversal graphs
In this paper, we provide bounds for the genus of the pancake graph $\mathbb{P}_n$, burnt pancake graph $\mathbb{BP}_n$, and undirected generalized pancake graph $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$. Our upper bound for $\mathbb{P}_n$ is sharper than the previously-known bound, and the other bounds presented are the first of their kind. Our proofs are constructive and rely on finding an appropriate rotation system (also referred to in the literature as Edmonds' permutation technique) where certain cycles in the graphs we consider become boundaries of regions of a 2-cell embedding. A key ingredient in the proof of our bounds for the genus $\mathbb{P}_n$ and $\mathbb{BP}_n$ is a labeling algorithm of their vertices that allows us to implement rotation systems to bound the number of regions of a 2-cell embedding of said graphs. All of our bounds are asymptotically tight; in particular, the genus of $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ is $Θ(m^nnn!)$ for all $m\geq1$ and $n\geq2$.

We show that very simple continued fractions can be obtained for the ordinary generating functions enumerating permutations or D-permutations with a large number of independent statistics, when each cycle is given a weight $-1$. The proof is based on a simple lemma relating the number of cycles modulo 2 to the numbers of fixed points, cycle peaks (or cycle valleys), and crossings.
Normality of $k$-Matching Polytopes of Bipartite Graphs
The $k$-matching polytope of a graph is the convex hull of all its matchings of a given size $k$ when they are considered as indicator vectors. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-matching polytope of a bipartite graph is normal, that is, every integer point in its $t$-dilate is the sum of $t$ integers points of the original polytope. This generalizes the known fact that Birkhoff polytopes are normal. As a preliminary result, we prove that for bipartite graphs the $k$-matching polytope is equal to the fractional $k$-matching polytope, having thus the $H$-representation of the polytope. This generalizes the Birkhoff-Von Neumann Theorem which establish that every doubly stochastic matrix can be written as a convex combination of permutation matrices.

We study a system of intervals $I_1,\ldots,I_k$ on the real line and a continuous map $f$ with $f(I_1 \cup I_2 \cup \ldots \cup I_k)\supseteq I_1 \cup I_2 \cup \ldots \cup I_k$. It's conjectured that there exists a periodic point of period $\le k$ in $I_1\cup \ldots \cup I_k$. In this paper, we prove the conjecture by a discretization method and reduce the initial problem to an interesting combinatorial lemma concerning cyclic permutations. We also obtain a non-concentration property of periodic points of small periods in intervals.
On Permutation Trinomials of the type $X^{q^2-q+1}+AX^{q^2}+BX$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$
Necessary and sufficient conditions on $A,B\in \mathbb{F}_{q^3}^*$ for $f(X)=X^{q^2-q+1}+AX^{q^2}+BX$ being a permutation polynomial of $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$ are investigated via a connection with algebraic varieties over finite fields.
Generalized Eulerian Numbers
Let $A(n,m)$ denote the Eulerian numbers, which count the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ descents. It is well known that $A(n,m)$ also counts the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ excedances. In this report, we define numbers of the form $A(n,m,k)$, which count the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ descents and the last element $k$. We then show bijections between this definition and various other analogs for $r$-excedances and $r$-descents. We also prove a variation of Worpitzky's identity on $A(n,m,k)$ using a combinatorial argument mentioned in a paper by Spivey in 2021.
On the action of the Weyl group on canonical bases
We study representations of simply-laced Weyl groups which are equipped with canonical bases. Our main result is that for a large class of representations, the separable elements of the Weyl group $W$ act on these canonical bases by bijections up to lower-order terms. Examples of this phenomenon include the action of separable permutations on the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of irreducible representations for the symmetric group, and the action of separable elements of $W$ on dual canonical bases of weight zero in tensor product representations of a Lie algebra. Our methods arise from categorical representation theory, and in particular the study of the perversity of Rickard complexes acting on triangulated categories.
Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. VI. Binary trees
In this paper we propose a notion of pattern avoidance in binary trees that generalizes the avoidance of contiguous tree patterns studied by Rowland and non-contiguous tree patterns studied by Dairyko, Pudwell, Tyner, and Wynn. Specifically, we propose algorithms for generating different classes of binary trees that are characterized by avoiding one or more of these generalized patterns. This is achieved by applying the recent Hartung-Hoang-Mütze-Williams generation framework, by encoding binary trees via permutations. In particular, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between tree patterns and certain mesh permutation patterns. We also conduct a systematic investigation of all tree patterns on at most 5 vertices, and we establish bijections between pattern-avoiding binary trees and other combinatorial objects, in particular pattern-avoiding lattice paths and set partitions.
M-convexity of Grothendieck polynomials via bubbling
We introduce bubbling diagrams and show that they compute the support of the Grothendieck polynomial of any vexillary permutation. Using these diagrams, we show that the support of the top homogeneous component of such a Grothendieck polynomial coincides with the support of the dual character of an explicit flagged Weyl module. We also show that the homogenized Grothendieck polynomial of a vexillary permutation has M-convex support.
Increasing subsequences, matrix loci, and Viennot shadows
Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables over a field $\mathbb{F}$. We study the ideal $I_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ generated by all row and column variable sums and all products of two variables drawn from the same row or column. We show that the quotient $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ admits a standard monomial basis determined by Viennot's shadow line avatar of the Schensted correspondence. As a corollary, the Hilbert series of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ is the generating function of permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the length of their longest increasing subsequence. Along the way, we describe a `shadow junta' basis of the vector space of $k$-local permutation statistics. We also calculate the structure of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ as a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n \times \mathfrak{S}_n$-module.
Subsequence frequency in binary words
The numbers we study in this paper are of the form $B_{n, p}(k)$, which is the number of binary words of length $n$ that contain the word $p$ (as a subsequence) exactly $k$ times. Our motivation comes from the analogous study of pattern containment in permutations. In our first set of results, we obtain explicit expressions for $B_{n, p}(k)$ for small values of $k$. We then focus on words $p$ with at most $3$ runs and study the maximum number of occurrences of $p$ a word of length $n$ can have. We also study the internal zeros in the sequence $(B_{n, p}(k))_{k \geq 0}$ for fixed $n$ and discuss the unimodality and log-concavity of such sequences.

In this note, we prove some and conjecture other results regarding the distribution of descent top and descent bottom sets on some pattern-avoiding permutations. In particular, for 3-letter patterns, we show bijectively that the set of descent tops and the set of descent bottoms are jointly equidistributed on the avoiders of 231 and 312. We also conjecture similar equidistributions for 4-letter patterns, in particular, that the set of descent tops and the set of descent bottoms are jointly equidistributed on the avoiders of 3142, 3241, 4132. This conjecture and several others made in this paper have now been proved by Zhou, Zang, and Yan (2024).
Optimal distance query reconstruction for graphs without long induced cycles
Given access to the vertex set $V$ of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ and an oracle that given two vertices $u,v\in V$, returns the shortest path distance between $u$ and $v$, how many queries are needed to reconstruct $E$?
Firstly, we show that randomised algorithms need to use at least $\frac1{200} Δn\log_Δn$ queries in expectation in order to reconstruct $n$-vertex trees of maximum degree $Δ$. The best previous lower bound (for graphs of bounded maximum degree) was an information-theoretic lower bound of $Ω(n\log n/\log \log n)$. Our randomised lower bound is also the first to break through the information-theoretic barrier for related query models including distance queries for phylogenetic trees, membership queries for learning partitions and path queries in directed trees.
Secondly, we provide a simple deterministic algorithm to reconstruct trees using $Δn\log_Δn+(Δ+2)n$ distance queries. This proves that our lower bound is optimal up to a multiplicative constant. We extend our algorithm to reconstruct graphs without induced cycles of length at least $k$ using $O_{Δ,k}(n\log n)$ queries. Our lower bound is therefore tight for a wide range of tree-like graphs, such as chordal graphs, permutation graphs and AT-free graphs. The previously best randomised algorithm for chordal graphs used $O_Δ(n\log^2 n)$ queries in expectation, so we improve by a $(\log n)$-factor for this graph class.
Hidden symmetries of ReLU networks
The parameter space for any fixed architecture of feedforward ReLU neural networks serves as a proxy during training for the associated class of functions - but how faithful is this representation? It is known that many different parameter settings can determine the same function. Moreover, the degree of this redundancy is inhomogeneous: for some networks, the only symmetries are permutation of neurons in a layer and positive scaling of parameters at a neuron, while other networks admit additional hidden symmetries. In this work, we prove that, for any network architecture where no layer is narrower than the input, there exist parameter settings with no hidden symmetries. We also describe a number of mechanisms through which hidden symmetries can arise, and empirically approximate the functional dimension of different network architectures at initialization. These experiments indicate that the probability that a network has no hidden symmetries decreases towards 0 as depth increases, while increasing towards 1 as width and input dimension increase.
The permuton limit of random recursive separable permutations
We introduce and study a simple Markovian model of random separable permutations. Our first main result is the almost sure convergence of these permutations towards a random limiting object in the sense of permutons, which we call the recursive separable permuton. We then prove several results on this new limiting object: a characterization of its distribution via a fixed-point equation, a combinatorial formula for its expected pattern densities, an explicit integral formula for its intensity measure, and lastly, we prove that its distribution is absolutely singular with respect to that of the Brownian separable permuton, which is the large size limit of uniform random separable permutations.
Equidistribution of set-valued statistics on standard Young tableaux and transversals
As a natural generalization of permutations, transversals of Young diagrams play an important role in the study of pattern avoiding permutations. Let $\mathcal{T}_λ(τ)$ and $\mathcal{ST}_λ(τ)$ denote the set of $τ$-avoiding transversals and $τ$-avoiding symmetric transversals of a Young diagram $λ$, respectively. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the distribution of the peak set and the valley set on standard Young tableaux and pattern avoiding transversals. In particular, by introducing Knuth transformations on standard Young tableaux, we prove that the peak set and the valley set are equidistributed on the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for any skew diagram $λ/μ$. The equidistribution enables us to show that the peak set is equidistributed over $\mathcal{T}_λ(12\cdots kτ)$ (resp. $\mathcal{ST}_λ(12\cdots k τ)$) and $\mathcal{T}_λ(k\cdots 21τ) $ (resp. $\mathcal{ST}_λ(k\cdots 21τ)$) for any Young diagram $λ$ and any permutation $τ$ of $\{k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+m\}$ with $k,m\geq 1$. Our results are refinements of the result of Backelin-West-Xin which states that $|\mathcal{T}_λ(12\cdots kτ)|=|\mathcal{T}_λ(k\cdots 21 τ)|$ and the result of Bousquet-Mélou and Steingrímsson which states that $|\mathcal{ST}_λ(12\cdots k τ)|=|\mathcal{ST}_λ(k\cdots 21 τ)|$.
Permutations that separate close elements, and rectangle packings in the torus
Let $n$, $s$ and $k$ be positive integers. For distinct $i,j\in\mathbb{Z}_n$, define $||i,j||_n$ to be the distance between $i$ and $j$ when the elements of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ are written in a circle. So \[ ||i,j||_n=\min\{(i-j)\bmod n,(j-i)\bmod n\}. \] A permutation $π:\mathbb{Z}_n\rightarrow\mathbb {Z}_n$ is \emph{$(s,k)$-clash-free} if $||π(i),π(j)||_n\geq k$ whenever $||i,j||_n<s$. So an $(s,k)$-clash-free permutation moves every pair of close elements (at distance less than $s$) to a pair of elements at large distance (at distance at least $k$). The notion of an $(s,k)$-clash-free permutation can be reformulated in terms of certain packings of $s\times k$ rectangles on an $n\times n$ torus.
For integers $n$ and $k$ with $1\leq k<n$, let $σ(n,k)$ be the largest value of $s$ such that an $(s,k)$-clash-free permutation of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ exists. Strengthening a recent paper of Blackburn, which proved a conjecture of Mammoliti and Simpson, we determine the value of $σ(n,k)$ in all cases.

We study the distribution of the length of longest monotone subsequences in random (fixed-point free) involutions of $n$ integers as $n$ grows large, establishing asymptotic expansions in powers of $n^{-1/6}$ in the general case and in powers of $n^{-1/3}$ in the fixed-point free cases. Whilst the limit laws were shown by Baik and Rains to be one of the Tracy-Widom distributions $F_β$ for $β=1$ or $β=4$, we find explicit analytic expressions of the first few expansion terms as linear combinations of higher order derivatives of $F_β$ with rational polynomial coefficients. Our derivation is based on a concept of generalized analytic de-Poissonization and is subject to the validity of certain hypotheses for which we provide compelling (computational) evidence. In a preparatory step expansions of the hard-to-soft edge transition laws of L$β$E are studied, which are lifted into expansions of the generalized Poissonized length distributions for large intensities. (This paper continues our work arXiv:2301.02022, which established similar results in the case of general permutations and $β=2$.)
Matrix Schubert varieties, binomial ideals, and reduced Gröbner bases
We prove a sharp lower bound on the number of terms in an element of the reduced Gröbner basis of a Schubert determinantal ideal $I_w$ under the term order of [Knutson-Miller '05]. We give three applications. First, we give a pattern-avoidance characterization of the matrix Schubert varieties whose defining ideals are binomial. This complements a result of [Escobar-Mészáros '16] on matrix Schubert varieties that are toric with respect to their natural torus action. Second, we give a combinatorial proof that the recent formulas of [Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt '23] and [Almousa-Dochtermann-Smith '22] computing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of vexillary $I_w$ and toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs respectively agree for binomial $I_w$. Third, we demonstrate that the Gröbner basis for $I_w$ given by minimal generators [Gao-Yong '22] is reduced if and only if the defining permutation $w$ is vexillary.
