Pattern-avoiding stabilized-interval-free permutations
Published in Discrete Math. 348, no. 3, 2025, 114329 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study pattern avoidance for stabilized-interval-free (SIF) permutations. These permutations are contained in the set of indecomposable permutations and in the set of derangements. We enumerate pattern-avoiding SIF permutations for classical and pairs of patterns of size 3. In particular, for the patterns 123 and 231, we rely on combinatorial arguments and the fixed-point distribution of general permutations avoiding these patterns. We briefly discuss 123-avoiding permutations with two fixed points and offer a conjecture for their enumeration by the distance between their fixed points. For the pattern 231, we also give a direct argument that uses a bijection to ordered forests.
Decompositions of Nonlinear Input-Output Systems to Zero the Output
Published in Systems & Control Letters, Volume 187, May 2024, 105783 • View PublicationBIB
Consider an input-output system where the output is the tracking error given some desired reference signal. It is natural to consider under what conditions the problem has an exact solution, that is, the tracking error is exactly the zero function. If the system has a well defined relative degree and the zero function is in the range of the input-output map, then it is well known that the system is locally left invertible, and thus, the problem has a unique exact solution. A system will fail to have relative degree when more than one exact solution exists. The general goal of this paper is to describe a decomposition of an input-output system having a Chen-Fliess series representation into a parallel product of subsystems in order to identify possible solutions to the problem of zeroing the output. For computational purposes, the focus is on systems whose generating series are polynomials. It is shown that the shuffle algebra on the set of generating polynomials is a unique factorization domain so that any polynomial can be uniquely factored modulo a permutation into its irreducible elements for the purpose of identifying the subsystems in a parallel product decomposition. This is achieved using the fact that this shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the symmetric algebra over the vector space spanned by Lyndon words. A specific algorithm for factoring generating polynomials into its irreducible factors is presented based on the Chen-Fox-Lyndon factorization of words.

On the computation of homology of type A real flag manifolds
In this paper, we present a closed, computable formula for the cellular homology coefficients of real flag manifolds associated with split real forms of type A. We demonstrate the process using movements within the code diagram for permutations. Additionally, we compute the third and fourth homology groups and provide generators for the free part up to the sixth homology group.

Sign-Balanced Pattern-Avoiding Permutation Classes
A set of permutations is called sign-balanced if the set contains the same number of even permutations as odd permutations. Let $S_n(σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r)$ be the set of permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$ which avoids patterns $σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r$. The aim of this paper is to investigate when, for certain patterns $σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r$, $S_n(σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r)$ is sign-balanced for every integer $n>1$. We prove that for any $\{σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r\}\subseteq S_3$, if $\{σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r\}$ is sign-balanced except $\{132, 213, 231, 312\}$, then $S_n(σ_1, σ_2, \ldots, σ_r)$ is sign-balanced for every integer $n>1$. In addition, we give some results in the case of avoiding some patterns of length $4$.

On the combinatorics of descents and inverse descents in the hyperoctahedral group
The elements in the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ can be treated as signed permutations with the natural order $\cdots<-2<-1<0<1<2<\cdots$, or as colored permutations with the $r$-order $-1<_r-2<_r\cdots<_r0<_r1<_r2<_r\cdots$. For any $π\in\mathfrak{B}_n$, let $\operatorname{des}^B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}^B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the natural order, and let $\operatorname{des}_B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}_B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the $r$-order. In this paper, by investigating signed permutation grids under both the natural order and the $r$-order, we give combinatorial proofs for six recurrence formulas of the joint distribution of descents and inverse descents over the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$, the set in involutions of $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, and the set of fixed-point free involutions in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{J}_n^B$, respectively. Some of these six formulas are new, and some reveal the combinatorial essences of the results obtained by Visontai, Moustakas and Cao-Liu through algebraic approaches such as quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, from these formulas, we conclude that $(\operatorname{des}^B,\operatorname{ides}^B)$ and $(\operatorname{des}_B,\operatorname{ides}_B)$ are equidistributed over both $\mathfrak{B}_n$ and $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, but not on $\mathcal{J}_n^B$.
On the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of permutation graphs
It is proved that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of permutation graphs is at most 18. Previously it was only known that this dimension is finite (Grußien, 2017).

Near automorphisms of $G_{(n,m)}$
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$, $f$ a permutation of $V(G)$. Define $δ_f(G)=|d(x,y)-d(f(x),f(y))|$ and $δ_f(G)=Σδ_f(x,y)$, where the sum is taken over all unordered pair $x$, $y$ of distinct vertices of $G$. $δ_f(x,U)=Σδ_f(x,y)$, where $U\subseteq V(G)$ and $y\in U$. Let $π(G)$ denote the smallest positive value of $δ_f(G)$ among all permutations of $V(G)$. A permutation $f$ with $δ_f(G)=π(G)$ is called a near automorphisms of $G$\cite{HV}. In this paper, we define $G_{(n,m)}$ is a graph obtained from $K_n$ by add $t_i$ pendent vertices to $y_i$ which is a vertex of $K_n$, $i=1,\cdots,m$, and we say $y_i$ is a c-pendent vertex of $G_(n,m)$. We determine $π(G_{(n,m)})$ and describe permutations $f$ of $G_{(n,m)}$ for which $π(G_{(n,m)})=δ_f(G_{(n,m)})$. Because $G_{(1,1)}$ is a star and it is easy, hence we let $n\geq 2$. Suppose $G_(n,m)$ has $m$ c-pendent vertices $\{y_1, \ldots, y_m\}$ and $y_i$ has $t_i$ pendent vertices($1\leq t_1\leq t_2\leq \ldots \leq t_m$). For $m<n$ we have $$π(G_{(n,m)})= \left\{ \begin{array}{lc} 2n-4 & n \leq t_1+2, m=1 \cr 2t_1&otherwise \end{array} \right. $$ For $m=n$ we have $$π(G_{(n,n)})= \left\{ \begin{array}{lc} 4 & t_1=1,t_2=2 \cr 2t_1+2t_2&otherwise \end{array} \right.$$

The Automorphism Conjecture for Ordered Sets of Width $\leq 11$ (Version 2)
We introduce a recursive method to deconstruct the automorphism group of an ordered set. By connecting this method with deep results for permutation groups, we prove the Automorphism Conjecture for ordered sets of width less than or equal to $11$. Subsequent investigations show that the method presented here could lead to a resolution of the Automorphism Conjecture.

Towards inductive proofs in algebraic combinatorics
We introduce a new class of transitive permutation groups which properly contains the automorphism groups of vertex-transitive graphs and digraphs. We then give a sufficient condition for a quotient of this family to remain in the family, showing that relatively straightforward induction arguments may possibly be used to solve problems in this family, and consequently for symmetry questions about vertex-transitive digraphs. As an example of this, for $p$ an odd prime, we use induction to determine the Sylow $p$-subgroups of transitive groups of degree $p^n$ that contain a regular cyclic subgroup in this family. This is enough information to determine the automorphism groups of circulant digraphs of order $p^n$.
Moments of Colored Permutation Statistics on Conjugacy Classes
Published in Ann. Comb. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the moments of statistics on conjugacy classes of the colored permutation groups $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}=\mathbb{Z}_r\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. We first show that any fixed moment coincides on all conjugacy classes where all cycles have sufficiently long length. Additionally, for permutation statistics that can be realized via a process we call symmetric extensions, these moments are polynomials in $n$. Finally, for the descent statistic on the hyperoctahedral group $B_n\cong \mathfrak{S}_{n,2}$, we show that its distribution on conjugacy classes without short cycles satisfies a central limit theorem. Our results build on and generalize previous work of Fulman (\textit{J. Comb. Theory Ser. A.}, 1998), Hamaker and Rhoades (arXiv, 2022), and Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin (arXiv, 2023). In particular, our techniques utilize the combinatorial framework introduced by Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin.

Modified ascent sequences and Bell numbers
In 2011, Duncan and Steingrímsson conjectured that modified ascent sequences avoiding any of the patterns 212, 1212, 2132, 2213, 2231 and 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers. Furthermore, the distribution of the number of ascents is the reverse of the distribution of blocks on set partitions. We solve the conjecture for all the patterns except 2321. We describe the corresponding sets of Fishburn permutations by pattern avoidance, and leave some open questions for future work.

Binomial Cayley Graphs and Applications to Dynamics on Finite Spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Binomial Cayley graphs are obtained by considering the binomial coefficient of the weight function of a given Cayley graph and a natural number. We introduce these objects and study two families: one associated with symmetric groups and the other with powers of cyclic groups. We determine various combinatorial properties of these graphs through the spectral analysis of their adjacency matrices. In the case of symmetric groups, we establish a relation between the multiplicity of the null eigenvalue and longest increasing sub-sequences of permutations by means of the RSK correspondence. Finally, we consider dynamical arrangements of finitely many elements in finite spaces, which we refer to as particle-box systems. We apply the results obtained on binomial Cayley graphs in order to describe their degeneracy.

Stirling-Euler-Mahonian Triples of Permutation Statistics
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 16, Issue 1 (2025), pp. 91-111 • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known distributions in the study of permutation statistics are the Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. Mahonian statistics include the major index MAJ and the number of inversions INV, while examples of Eulerian statistics are the number of descents des and excedances exc. Also of interest are pairs of permutation statistics that have the same joint distribution as (des, MAJ); these are called Euler Mahonian pairs. In this paper we define a Stirling statistic as one that is equidistributed with the number of right-to-left minima rlmin and a Stirling- Euler-Mahonian triple as a triple of statistics with the same trivariate distribution as (rlmin, des, MAJ). We prove that several triples involving well-known statistics are Stirling-Euler-Mahonian. A general bijective technique is demonstrated for any Mahonian statistic that has a permutation code. Finally, we note several properties of Stirling-Euler-Mahonian triples that follow from earlier results.
Permutations with few inversions
A curious generating function $S_0(x)$ for permutations of $[n]$ with exactly $n$ inversions is presented. Moreover, $(xC(x))^iS_0(x)$ is shown to be the generating function for permutations of $[n]$ with exactly $n-i$ inversions, where $C(x)$ is the generating function for the Catalan numbers.

On Cohen-Macaulay posets of dimension two and permutation graphs
We characterize Cohen-Macaulay posets of dimension two; they are precisely the shellable and strongly connected posets of dimension two. We also give a combinatorial description of these posets. Using the fact that co-comparability graph of a 2-dimensional poset is a permutation graph, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay permutation graphs.

A note on monotone subsequences and the RS image of invariant random permutations with macroscopic number of fixed points
The work of Vershik and Kerov [1977], Logan and Shepp [1977] established that the shape of the scaled random young diagram in Russian notation, as determined by the Plancherel measure, converges to a deterministic shape. In this article, we focus on the scenario where the number of fixed points is substantial. We provide evidence that, subject to specific requirements on the total number of cycles, the limiting shape is a scaled version of the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limiting shape. Additionally, we identify certain limiting regimes that resemble those in Chapuy, Louf, and Walsh [2022]. Furthermore, we enhance the existing results on Tracy-Widom universality classes for $β\in \{ 1, 2, 4\}$ for monotone subsequences.

In Honour of Ted Swart
This is a tribute to my dear life-long friend, mentor and colleague Ted Swart. It includes anecdotal stories and memories of our times together, and also includes a new academic contribution in his honour, Teds polytope. Tweeks made to the Birkhoff polytope Bn endow Teds polytope Tn(ε) with a special tunable parameter ε = ε(n). Observe how Bn can be viewed as the convex hull of both the TSP polytope, and the set of non-tour permutation extrema, and, that its extended formulation is compact. Tours (connected 2-factor permutation matrices when viewed as adjacency matrices) can be distinguished from non-tours (disconnected 2-factor permutation matrices) where ε scales the magnitude of tweeks made to Bn. For ε > 0, Tn(ε) is tuned so that the convex hull of extrema corresponding to transformed tours is lifted from Bn, and separated (by a hyperplane) from the convex hull of extrema corresponding to translated non-tours. This leads to creation of the feasible region of an LP model that can decide existence of a tour in a graph based on an extended formulation of the TSP polytope. That is, by designing for polynomial-time distinguishable tour extrema embedded in a subspace disjoint from non-tour extrema, NP-completeness strongholds come into play, necessarily expressed in a non-compact extended formulation of Tn(ε) i.e. a compact extended formulation of the TSP polytope cannot exist. No matter, Ted would have loved these ideas, and Tn(ε) might one day yet be useful in the study of the P versus NP conundrum. In summary, Tn(ε) is a perturbed Bn i.e. the convex hull of both an ε-stretched TSP polytope, and the set of translated non-tour permutation extrema i.e. a TSP-like polytope and separable non-tour extrema.

On combinatorial differential operators on species of structures
In 1981, André Joyal provided a combinatorial interpretation of the algebra of formal power series, a central gadget in the toolkit of enumerative combinatorics. In Joyal's theory of species of structures, combinatorial species (like permutations, graphs, partitions, etc.) are incarnated in endofunctors on the category of finite sets and bijections. Species can be added, multiplied, composed and differentiated; new species arise as solutions to functional and differential equations. Moreover, everything achieved at the level of species can be directly translated into the language of generating series for enumeration of labelled, as well as unlabelled structures. More recently, Labelle and Lamathe developed a general theory of differential operators on species of structures, such as cycles or diagrams of derivatives. The main goal of this dissertation is to present some parts of this theory.

On a polynomial bound for the orbital diameter of primitive affine groups
Let $ VG $ be a finite primitive affine permutation group, where $ V $ is a vector space of dimension $ d $ over the prime field $ \mathbb{F}_p $ and $ G $ is an irreducible linear group on $ V $. We prove that if $ p $ divides $ |G| $, then the diameters of all nondiagonal orbital graphs of $ VG $ are at most $ 9d^3 $. This improves an earlier exponential bound by A. Maróti and the author.

Arithmétique des Groupes Abéliens Finis
The article presents several methods for the arithmetic of finite abelian groups. We introduce a tool - already used by Delsarte in [1] as I found out later - analogous to Dirichlet's convolution to obtain combinatorial results on these groups. Using this convolution and some group actions, we deduce an interesting fact : the number of generating subsets of a finite abelian group is always a multiple of the order of the group. Eventually, we prove a theorem about the generation of the group of permutations of an abelian group G using only transpositions and translations from the group G.
