Hypergraph independence polynomials with a zero close to the origin
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 34 (2025) 486-490 • View PublicationBIB
For each uniformity $k \geq 3$, we construct $k$-uniform linear hypergraphs $G$ with arbitrarily large maximum degree $Δ$ whose independence polynomial $Z_G$ has a root $λ$ with $\lvertλ\rvert = O\left(\frac{\log Δ}Δ\right)$. This disproves a recent conjecture of Galvin, McKinley, Perkins, Sarantis, and Tetali.

On composition and decomposition operations for vector spaces, graphs and matroids
In this paper, we study the ideas of composition and decomposition in the context of vector spaces, graphs and matroids. For vector spaces $\V_{AB},$ treated as collection of row vectors, with specified column set $A\uplus B,$ we define $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ}, S\cap Q= \emptyset, $ to be the collection of all vectors $(f_S,f_Q)$ such that $(f_S,f_P)\in \V_{SP}, (f_P,f_Q)\in \V_{PQ}$. An analogous operation $\G_{SP}\lrarg \G_{PQ}\equivd \G_{PQ}$ can be defined in relation to graphs $\G_{SP}, \G_{PQ},$ on edge sets $S\uplus P, P\uplus Q,$ respectively in terms of an overlapping subgraph $\G_P$ which gets deleted in the right side graph (see for instance the notion of $k-sum$ \cite{oxley}). For matroids we define the `linking' $\M_{SP}\lrarm \M_{PQ} \equivd (\M_{SP}\vee \M_{PQ})\times (S\uplus Q)$, denoting the contraction operation by '$\times$'. In each case, we examine how to minimize the size of the `overlap' set $P,$ without affecting the right side entity. In the case of vector spaces, there is a polynomial time algorithm for achieving the minimum, which we present. Similar ideas work for graphs and for matroids under appropriate conditions. Next we consider the problem of decomposition. Here, in the case of vector spaces, the problem is to decompose $\V_{SQ}$ as $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ},$ with minimum size $P.$ We give a polynomial time algorithm for this purpose. In the case of graphs and matroids we give a solution to this problem under certain restrictions.
Tree independence number I. (Even hole, diamond, pyramid)-free graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 106 (2024), 923-943 • View PublicationBIB
The tree-independence number tree-$α$, first defined and studied by Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel, is a variant of treewidth tailored to solving the maximum independent set problem. Over a series of papers, Abrishami et al. developed the so-called central bag method to study induced obstructions to bounded treewidth. Among others, they showed that, in a certain superclass $\mathcal C$ of (even hole, diamond, pyramid)-free graphs, treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number. In this paper, we relax the bounded clique number assumption, and show that $\mathcal C$ has bounded tree-$α$. Via existing results, this yields a polynomial time algorithm for the maximum independent set problem in this class. Our result also corroborates, for this class of graphs, a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel that in a hereditary graph class, tree-$α$ is bounded if and only if the treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number.

Geometrical Study of the Cone of Sums of Squares plus Sums of Nonnegative Circuits
In this article, we combine sums of squares (SOS) and sums of nonnegative circuit (SONC) forms, two independent nonnegativity certificates for real homogeneous polynomials. We consider the convex cone SOS+SONC of forms that decompose into a sum of an SOS and a SONC form and study it from a geometric point of view. We show that the SOS+SONC cone is proper and neither closed under multiplications nor under linear transformation of variables. Moreover, we present an alternative proof of an analog of Hilbert's 1888 Theorem for the SOS+SONC cone and prove that in the non-Hilbert cases it provides a proper superset of both the SOS and the SONC cone. This follows by exploiting a new necessary condition for membership in the SONC cone.

Rooted Almost-binary Phylogenetic Networks for which the Maximum Covering Subtree Problem is Solvable in Linear Time
Phylogenetic networks are a flexible model of evolution that can represent reticulate evolution and handle complex data. Tree-based networks, which are phylogenetic networks that have a spanning tree with the same root and leaf-set as the network itself, have been well studied. However, not all networks are tree-based. Francis-Semple-Steel (2018) thus introduced several indices to measure the deviation of rooted binary phylogenetic networks $N$ from being tree-based, such as the minimum number $δ^\ast(N)$ of additional leaves needed to make $N$ tree-based, and the minimum difference $η^\ast(N)$ between the number of vertices of $N$ and the number of vertices of a subtree of $N$ that shares the root and leaf set with $N$. Hayamizu (2021) has established a canonical decomposition of almost-binary phylogenetic networks of $N$, called the maximal zig-zag trail decomposition, which has many implications including a linear time algorithm for computing $δ^\ast(N)$. The Maximum Covering Subtree Problem (MCSP) is the problem of computing $η^\ast(N)$, and Davidov et al. (2022) showed that this can be solved in polynomial time (in cubic time when $N$ is binary) by an algorithm for the minimum cost flow problem. In this paper, under the assumption that $N$ is almost-binary (i.e. each internal vertex has in-degree and out-degree at most two), we show that $δ^\ast(N)\leq η^\ast (N)$ holds, which is tight, and give a characterisation of such phylogenetic networks $N$ that satisfy $δ^\ast(N)=η^\ast(N)$. Our approach uses the canonical decomposition of $N$ and focuses on how the maximal W-fences (i.e. the forbidden subgraphs of tree-based networks) are connected to maximal M-fences in the network $N$. Our results introduce a new class of phylogenetic networks for which MCSP can be solved in linear time, which can be seen as a generalisation of tree-based networks.

The polynomial method for 3-path extendability of list colourings of planar graphs
We restate Thomassen's theorem of 3-extendability, an extension of the famous planar 5-choosability theorem, in terms of graph polynomials. This yields an Alon--Tarsi equivalent of 3-extendability.

Twists of Gr(3,n) Cluster Variables as Double and Triple Dimer Partition Functions
We give a combinatorial interpretation for certain cluster variables in Grassmannian cluster algebras in terms of double and triple dimer configurations. More specifically, we examine several Gr(3,n) cluster variables that may be written as degree two or degree three polynomials in terms of Plücker coordinates, and give generating functions for their images under the twist map - a cluster algebra automorphism introduced in work of Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky. The generating functions range over certain double or triple dimer configurations on an associated plabic graph, which we describe using particular non-crossing matchings or webs (as defined by Kuperberg), respectively. These connections shed light on a recent conjecture of Cheung et al., extend the concept of web duality introduced in a paper of Fraser-Lam-Le, and more broadly make headway on understanding Grassmannian cluster algebras for Gr(3,n).

The Spectral Geometry of the Mesh Matrices of Graphs
The mesh matrix $Mesh(G,T_0)$ of a connected finite graph $G=(V(G),E(G))=(vertices, edges) \ of \ G$ of with respect to a choice of a spanning tree $T_0 \subset G$ is defined and studied. It was introduced by Trent \cite{Trent1,Trent2}. Its characteristic polynomial $det(X \cdot Id -Mesh(G,T_0))$ is shown to equal $Σ_{j=0}^{N} \ (-1)^j \ ST_{j}(G,T_0)\ (X-1)^{N-j} \ (\star)$ \ where $ST_j(G,T_0)$ is the number of spanning trees of $G$ meeting $E(G-T_0)$ in j edges and $N=|E(G-T_0)|$. As a consequence, there are Tutte-type deletion-contraction formulae for computing this polynomial. Additionally, $Mesh(G,T_0) -Id$ is of the special form $Y^t \cdot Y$; so the eigenvalues of the mesh matrix $Mesh(G,T_0)$ are all real and are furthermore be shown to be $\ge +1$. It is shown that $Y \cdot Y^t$, called the mesh Laplacian, is a generalization of the standard graph Kirchhoff Laplacian $Δ(H)= Deg -Adj$ of a graph $H$.For example, $(\star)$ generalizes the all minors matrix tree theorem for graphs $H$ and gives a deletion-contraction formula for the characteristic polynomial of $Δ(H)$. This generalization is explored in some detail. The smallest positive eigenvalue of the mesh Laplacian, a measure of flux, is estimated, thus extending the classical inequality for the Kirchoff Laplacian of graphs.
The Complexity of 2-Intersection Graphs of 3-Hypergraphs Recognition for Claw-free Graphs and triangulated Claw-free Graphs
Given a 3-uniform hypergraph H, its 2-intersection graph G has for vertex set the hyperedges of H and ee' is an edge of G whenever e and e' have exactly two common vertices in H. Di Marco et al. prove that deciding wether a graph G is the 2-intersection graph of a 3-uniform hypergraph is NP-complete. The main problems we study concern the class of claw-free graphs. We show that the recognition problem remains NP-complete when G is claw-free graphs but becomes polynomial if in addition G is triangulated.

Testing Isomorphism of Graphs in Polynomial Time
Given a graph $G$, the graph $[G]$ obtained by adding, for each pair of vertices of $G$, a unique vertex adjacent to both vertices is called the binding graph of $G$. In this work, we show that the class of binding graphs is graph-isomorphism complete and that the stable partitions of binding graphs by the Weisfeiler-Lehman (WL) algorithm produce automorphism partitions. To test the isomorphism of two graphs $G$ and $H$, one computes the stable graph of the binding graph $[G\uplus H]$ for the disjoint union graph $G\uplus H$. The automorphism partition reveals the isomorphism of $G$ and $H$. Because the WL algorithm is a polynomial-time procedure, the claim can be made that the graph-isomorphism problem is in complexity class $\mathtt{P}$.

Uniqueness of an association scheme related to the Witt design on 11 points
It follows from Delsarte theory that the Witt $4$-$(11,5,1)$ design gives rise to a $Q$-polynomial association scheme $\mathcal{W}$ defined on the set of its blocks. In this note we show that $\mathcal{W}$ is unique, i.e., defined up to isomorphism by its parameters.
Flashes and rainbows in tournaments
Colour the edges of the complete graph with vertex set $\{1, 2, \dotsc, n\}$ with an arbitrary number of colours. What is the smallest integer $f(l,k)$ such that if $n > f(l,k)$ then there must exist a monotone monochromatic path of length $l$ or a monotone rainbow path of length $k$? Lefmann, Rödl, and Thomas conjectured in 1992 that $f(l, k) = l^{k - 1}$ and proved this for $l \ge (3 k)^{2 k}$. We prove the conjecture for $l \geq k^3 (\log k)^{1 + o(1)}$ and establish the general upper bound $f(l, k) \leq k (\log k)^{1 + o(1)} \cdot l^{k - 1}$. This reduces the gap between the best lower and upper bounds from exponential to polynomial in $k$. We also generalise some of these results to the tournament setting.

Recursions and characteristic polynomials of the Rows of the Circuit Array
The 2022 Fibonacci Conference held in Sarajevo introduced the Circuit Array, a two-dimensional array associated with the resistance labels of electrical circuits whose underlying graph when embedded in the Cartesian plane has the form of a triangular n-grid. The presentation used row reduction, a computational method alternative to the traditional method using the Laplacian. The presentation explored reconsidering the Circuit Array in terms of polynomials instead of numbers as a means to facilitate finding patterns. The present paper shows the fruitfulness of this approach. The main result of the current paper states that the characteristic polynomials corresponding to the recursions of single or multi-variable polynomial formulations of the Circuit Array exclusively have powers of 9 as roots. The proof methodology uses the approach of annihilators. Several initial cases and one major sub-case are proven.

Schubert determinantal ideals are Hilbertian
Published in J. Algebra Volume 677, 2025, 278-293 • View PublicationBIB
Abhyankar defined an ideal to be Hilbertian if its Hilbert polynomial coincides with its Hilbert function for all nonnegative integers. In 1984, he proved that the ideal of (r+1)-order minors of a generic p x q matrix is Hilbertian. We give a different proof and a generalization to the Schubert determinantal ideals introduced by Fulton in 1992. Our proof reduces to a simple upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these ideals. We further indicate the pervasiveness of the Hilbertian property in Schubert geometry.
Moments of Colored Permutation Statistics on Conjugacy Classes
Published in Ann. Comb. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the moments of statistics on conjugacy classes of the colored permutation groups $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}=\mathbb{Z}_r\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. We first show that any fixed moment coincides on all conjugacy classes where all cycles have sufficiently long length. Additionally, for permutation statistics that can be realized via a process we call symmetric extensions, these moments are polynomials in $n$. Finally, for the descent statistic on the hyperoctahedral group $B_n\cong \mathfrak{S}_{n,2}$, we show that its distribution on conjugacy classes without short cycles satisfies a central limit theorem. Our results build on and generalize previous work of Fulman (\textit{J. Comb. Theory Ser. A.}, 1998), Hamaker and Rhoades (arXiv, 2022), and Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin (arXiv, 2023). In particular, our techniques utilize the combinatorial framework introduced by Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin.

Stretch-width
We introduce a new parameter, called stretch-width, that we show sits strictly between clique-width and twin-width. Unlike the reduced parameters [BKW '22], planar graphs and polynomial subdivisions do not have bounded stretch-width. This leaves open the possibility of efficient algorithms for a broad fragment of problems within Monadic Second-Order (MSO) logic on graphs of bounded stretch-width. In this direction, we prove that graphs of bounded maximum degree and bounded stretch-width have at most logarithmic treewidth. As a consequence, in classes of bounded stretch-width, Maximum Independent Set can be solved in subexponential time $2^{O(n^{4/5} \log n)}$ on $n$-vertex graphs, and, if further the maximum degree is bounded, Existential Counting Modal Logic [Pilipczuk '11] can be model-checked in polynomial time. We also give a polynomial-time $O(\text{OPT}^2)$-approximation for the stretch-width of symmetric $0,1$-matrices or ordered graphs. Somewhat unexpectedly, we prove that exponential subdivisions of bounded-degree graphs have bounded stretch-width. This allows to complement the logarithmic upper bound of treewidth with a matching lower bound. We leave as open the existence of an efficient approximation algorithm for the stretch-width of unordered graphs, if the exponential subdivisions of all graphs have bounded stretch-width, and if graphs of bounded stretch-width have logarithmic clique-width (or rank-width).

The Generalized Combinatorial Lason-Alon-Zippel-Schwartz Nullstellensatz Lemma
We survey a few strengthenings and generalizations of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz of Alon and the Schwartz-Zippel Lemma. These lemmas guarantee the existence of (a certain number of) nonzeros of a multivariate polynomial when the variables run independently through sufficiently large ranges.

Ranges of polynomials control degree ranks of Green and Tao over finite prime fields
Let $p$ be a prime, let $1 \le t < d < p$ be integers, and let $S$ be a non-empty subset of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We establish that if a polynomial $P:\mathbb{F}_p^n \to \mathbb{F}_p$ with degree $d$ is such that the image $P(S^n)$ does not contain the full image $A(\mathbb{F}_p)$ of any non-constant polynomial $A: \mathbb{F}_p \to \mathbb{F}_p$ with degree at most $t$, then $P$ coincides on $S^n$ with a polynomial that in particular has bounded degree-$\lfloor d/(t+1) \rfloor$-rank in the sense of Green and Tao. Similarly, we prove that if the assumption holds even for $t=d$, then $P$ coincides on $S^n$ with a polynomial determined by a bounded number of coordinates.
Free nilspaces, double-coset nilspaces, and Gowers norms
Compact finite-rank nilspaces have become central in the nilspace approach to higher-order Fourier analysis, notably through their role in a general form of the inverse theorem for the Gowers norms. This paper studies these nilspaces per se, and in connection with further refinements of this inverse theorem that have been conjectured recently. Our first main result states that every compact finite-rank nilspace is obtained by taking a free nilspace (a nilspace based on an abelian group of the form $\mathbb{Z}^{r}\times \mathbb{R}^s$) and quotienting this by a discrete group action of a specific type, describable in terms of polynomials. We call these group actions "higher-order lattice actions", as they generalize actions of lattices in $\mathbb{Z}^r\times \mathbb{R}^s$. The second main result (which relies on the first one) represents every compact finite-rank nilspace as a double-coset space $K\backslash G / Γ$ where $G$ is a nilpotent Lie group of a specific kind. Our third main result extends the aforementioned results to $k$-step compact nilspaces (not necessarily of finite rank), by representing any such nilspace as a quotient of infinite products of free nilspaces and also as double coset spaces $K\backslash G/Γ$ where $G$ is a degree-$k$ nilpotent pro-Lie group. These results open the study of compact nilspaces to areas more classical than nilspace theory, such as the theory of topological group actions. The results also require developing the theory of topological non-compact nilspaces, for which we provide groundwork in this paper. Applications include new inverse theorems for Gowers norms on any finite abelian group. These theorems are purely group theoretic in that the correlating harmonics are based on double-coset spaces. This yields progress towards the Jamneshan-Tao conjecture.

Addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials and $B$-sequences of hyperplane arrangements
We prove the addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials, which have two important specializations. Namely, one is to the characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arangements, and the other to the Poincarè polynomials of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. One of the main tools to show them is the free surjection theorem which confirms the right exactness of several important exact sequences among logarithmic modules. Moreover, we introduce a generalized polynomial $B$-theory to the higher order logarithmic modules, whose origin was due to Terao.
