The Laplacians, Kirchhoff index and complexity of linear Möbius and cylinder octagonal-quadrilateral networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Spectrum graph theory not only facilitate comprehensively reflect the topological structure and dynamic characteristics of networks, but also offer significant and noteworthy applications in theoretical chemistry, network science and other fields. Let $L_{n}^{8,4}$ represent a linear octagonal-quadrilateral network, consisting of $n$ eight-member ring and $n$ four-member ring. The Möbius graph $Q_{n}(8,4)$ is constructed by reverse identifying the opposite edges, whereas cylinder graph $Q'_{n}(8,4)$ identifies the opposite edges by order. In this paper, the explicit formulas of Kirchhoff indices and complexity of $Q_{n}(8,4)$ and $Q'_{n}(8,4)$ are demonstrated by Laplacian characteristic polynomials according to decomposition theorem and Vieta's theorem. In surprise, the Kirchhoff index of $Q_{n}(8,4)$($Q'_{n}(8,4)$) is approximately one-third half of its Wiener index as $n\to\infty$.

The existence of balanced neighborly polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by the definition of balanced neighborly spheres, we define balanced neighborly polynomials and study the existence of these polynomials. The goal of this article is to construct balanced neighborly polynomials of type $(k,k,k,k)$ over any field $K$ for all $k \neq 2$, and show that a balanced neighborly polynomial of type $(2,2,2,2)$ exists if and only if ${\rm char}(K) \neq 2$. Besides, we also discuss a relation between balanced neighborly polynomials and balanced neighborly simplicial spheres.
Taming graphs with no large creatures and skinny ladders
We confirm a conjecture of Gartland and Lokshtanov [arXiv:2007.08761]: if for a hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ there exists a constant $k$ such that no member of $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-creature as an induced subgraph or a $k$-skinny-ladder as an induced minor, then there exists a polynomial $p$ such that every $G \in \mathcal{G}$ contains at most $p(|V(G)|)$ minimal separators. By a result of Fomin, Todinca, and Villanger [SIAM J. Comput. 2015] the latter entails the existence of polynomial-time algorithms for Maximum Weight Independent Set, Feedback Vertex Set and many other problems, when restricted to an input graph from $\mathcal{G}$. Furthermore, as shown by Gartland and Lokshtanov, our result implies a full dichotomy of hereditary graph classes defined by a finite set of forbidden induced subgraphs into tame (admitting a polynomial bound of the number of minimal separators) and feral (containing infinitely many graphs with exponential number of minimal separators).

Finite Free Point Processes
We use techniques from finite free probability to analyze matrix processes related to eigenvalues, singular values, and generalized singular values of random matrices. The models we use are quite basic and the analysis consists entirely of expected characteristic polynomials. A number of our results match known results in random matrix theory, however our main result (regarding generalized singular values) seems to be more general than any of the standard random matrix processes (Hermite/Laguerre/Jacobi) in the field. To test this, we perform a series of simulations of this new process that, on the one hand, confirms that this process can exhibit behavior not seen in the standard random matrix processes, but on the other hand provides evidence that the true behavior is captured quite well by our techniques. This, coupled with the fact that we are able to compute the same statistics for this new model that we are for the standard models, suggests that further investigation could be both interesting and fruitful.

On Finite Analogs of Schmidt's Problem and Its Variants
We refine Schmidt's problem and a partition identity related to 2-color partitions which we will refer to as Uncu-Andrews-Paule theorem. We will approach the problem using Boulet-Stanley weights and a formula on Rogers-Szegő polynomials by Berkovich-Warnaar, and present various Schmidt's problem alike theorems and their refinements. Our new Schmidt type results include the use of even-indexed parts' sums, alternating sum of parts, and hook lengths as well as the odd-indexed parts' sum which appears in the original Schmidt's problem. We also translate some of our Schmidt's problem alike relations to weighted partition counts with multiplicative weights in relation to Rogers-Ramanujan partitions.

Local permutation polynomials and the action of e-Klenian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation polynomials of finite fields have many applications in Coding Theory, Cryptography and Combinatorics. In the first part of this paper we present a new family of local permutation polynomials based on a class of symmetric subgroups without fixed points, the so called e-Klenian groups. In the second part we use the fact that bivariate local permutation polynomials define Latin Squares, to discuss several constructions of Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares (MOLS) and, in particular, we provide a new family of MOLS on size a prime power.
On the spectrum and energy of Seidel matrix for chain graphs
We study various spectral properties of the Seidel matrix $S$ of a connected chain graph. We prove that $-1$ is always an eigenvalue of $S$ and all other eigenvalues of $S$ can have multiplicity at most two. We obtain the multiplicity of the Seidel eigenvalue $-1$, minimum number of distinct eigenvalues, eigenvalue bounds, characteristic polynomial, lower and upper bounds of Seidel energy of a chain graph. It is also shown that the energy bounds obtained here work better than the bounds conjectured by Haemers. We also obtain the minimal Seidel energy for some special chain graphs of order $n$. We also give a number of open problems.
Graph Polynomial for Colored Embedded Graphs: A Topological Approach
We study finite graphs embedded in oriented surfaces by associating a polynomial to it. The tools used in developing a theory of such graph polynomials are algebraic topological while the polynomial itself is inspired from ideas arising in physics. We also analyze a variant of these polynomials for colored embedded graphs. This is used to describe the change in the polynomial under basic graph theoretic operations. We conclude with several applications of this polynomial including detection of certain classes of graphs and the connection of this polynomial with topological entanglement entropy.

On the compatible sets expansion of the Tutte polynomial
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 28 (2024) 33-42 • View PublicationBIB
Kochol (2021) gave a new expansion formula for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid using the notion of \emph{compatible sets}, and asked how this expansion relates to the internal-external activities formula. Here, we provide an answer, which is obtained as a special case of a generalized version of the expansion formula to Las Vergnas's trivariate Tutte polynomials of matroid perspectives. The same generalization to matroid perspectives and bijection with activities have been independently proven by Kochol (2022 and 2023) in parallel with this work, but using different methods. Kochol proves both results recursively using the contraction-deletion relations, whereas we give a more direct proof of the bijection and use that to deduce the compatible sets expansion formula from Las Vergnas's activities expansion.

Lattice zonotopes of degree 2
Published in Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie 64 (2023), 1011-1025 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial $ehr_P (n)$ of a lattice polytope $P$ gives the number of integer lattice points in the $n$-th dilate of $P$ for all integers $n\geq 0$. The degree of $P$ is defined as the degree of its $h^\ast$-polynomial, a particular transformation of the Ehrhart polynomial with many useful properties which serves as an important tool for classification questions in Ehrhart theory. A zonotope is the Minkowski (pointwise) sum of line segments. We classify all Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes of degree $2$ thereby complementing results of Scott (1976), Treutlein (2010), and Henk-Tagami (2009). Our proof is constructive: by considering solid-angles and the lattice width, we provide a characterization of all $3$-dimensional zonotopes of degree $2$.

What is in #P and what is not?
Published • View PublicationBIB
For several classical nonnegative integer functions, we investigate if they are members of the counting complexity class #P or not. We prove #P membership in surprising cases, and in other cases we prove non-membership, relying on standard complexity assumptions or on oracle separations. We initiate the study of the polynomial closure properties of #P on affine varieties, i.e., if all problem instances satisfy algebraic constraints. This is directly linked to classical combinatorial proofs of algebraic identities and inequalities. We investigate #TFNP and obtain oracle separations that prove the strict inclusion of #P in all standard syntactic subclasses of #TFNP-1.
Twin-width VII: groups
Twin-width is a recently introduced graph parameter with applications in algorithmics, combinatorics, and finite model theory. For graphs of bounded degree, finiteness of twin-width is preserved by quasi-isometry. Thus, through Cayley graphs, it defines a group invariant. We prove that groups which are abelian, hyperbolic, ordered, solvable, or with polynomial growth, have finite twin-width. Twin-width can be characterised by excluding patterns in the self-action by product of the group elements. Based on this characterisation, we propose a strengthening called uniform twin-width, which is stable under constructions such as group extensions, direct products, and direct limits. The existence of finitely generated groups with infinite twin-width is not immediate. We construct one using a result of Osajda on embeddings of graphs into groups. This implies the existence of a class of finite graphs with unbounded twin-width but containing $2^{O(n)} \cdot n!$ graphs on vertex set $\{1,\dots,n\}$, settling a question asked in a previous work.

A geometric proof for the root-independence of the greedoid polynomial of Eulerian branching greedoids
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 206 (2024), Paper No. 105891 • View PublicationBIB
We define the root polytope of a regular oriented matroid, and show that the greedoid polynomial of an Eulerian branching greedoid rooted at vertex $v_0$ is equivalent to the $h^*$-polynomial of the root polytope of the dual of the graphic matroid. As the definition of the root polytope is independent of the vertex $v_0$, this gives a geometric proof for the root-independence of the greedoid polynomial for Eulerian branching greedoids, a fact which was first proved by Swee Hong Chan, Kévin Perrot and Trung Van Pham using sandpile models. We also obtain that the greedoid polynomial does not change if we reverse every edge of an Eulerian digraph.

Multiple orthogonal polynomials, $d$-orthogonal polynomials, production matrices, and branched continued fractions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., Series B 11, 762-797 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
I analyze an unexpected connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials, $d$-orthogonal polynomials, production matrices and branched continued fractions. This work can be viewed as a partial extension of Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials to the case where the production matrix is lower-Hessenberg but is not necessarily tridiagonal.

The parabolic coset structure of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups
In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.

We study arithmetic and asymptotic properties of polynomials provided by $Q_n(x):= x \sum_{k=1}^n k \, Q_{n-k}(x)$ with initial value $Q_0(x)=1$. The coefficients satisfy a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem involving Fibonacci numbers. We apply methods of Berry and Esseen, Harper, Bender, and Canfield.

Curious congruences for cyclotomic polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ_n^{(k)}(x)$ be the $k$-th derivative of $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. Extending a work of D.~H.~Lehmer, we show some curious congruences: $2Φ^{(3)}_n(1)$ is divisible by $φ(n)-2$ and $Φ^{(2k+1)}_n(1)$ is divisible by $φ(n)-2k$ for $k\ge 2$. The congruence stems from a general property of self-reciprocal polynomials.

Hypergraph matrix models and generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently we introduced the hypergraph matrix model (HMM), a Hermitian matrix model generalizing the classical Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). In this model the Gaussians of the GUE, whose moments count partitions of finite sets into pairs, are replaced by formal measures whose moments count set partitions into parts of a fixed even size 2m >= 2. Just as the expectations of the trace polynomials Tr X^{2r} in the GUE produce polynomials counting unicellular orientable maps of different genera, in the HHM these expectations give polynomials counting certain unicelled edge-ramified CW complexes with extra data that we call (orientable CW) maps with instructions. In this paper we describe generating functions for maps with instructions of fixed genus and with the number of vertices arbitrary. Our results are motivated by work of Wright. In particular Wright computed generating functions of connected graphs of fixed first Betti number as rational functions in the rooted tree function T (x), given as the solution to the functional relation x = T e^{-T}.

Positivity of permutation pattern character polynomials
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 147, June 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Let $N_σ(π)$ denote the number of occurrences of a permutation pattern $σ\in S_k$ in a permutation $π\in S_n$. Gaetz and Ryba (2021) showed using partition algebras that the $d$-th moment $M_{σ,d,n}(π)$ of $N_σ$ on the conjugacy class of $π$ is given by a polynomial in $n,m_1,\dots,m_{dk}$, where $m_i$ denotes the number of $i$-cycles of $π$. They also showed that the coefficient $\langle χ^{λ[n]}, M_{σ,d,n}\rangle$ agrees with a polynomial $a_{σ,d}^λ(n)$ in $n$. This work is motivated by the conjecture that when $σ=\text{id}_k$ is the identity permutation, all of these coefficients are nonnegative. We directly compute closed forms for the polynomials $a_{\text{id}_k}^λ(n)$ in the cases $λ=(1),(1,1),$ and $(2)$, and use this to verify the positivity conjecture for those cases by showing that the polynomials are real-rooted with all roots less than $k$. We also study the case $a_σ^{(1)}(n)$, for which we give a formula for the polynomials and their leading coefficients.
