Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.

For a lattice path $ν$ from the origin to a point $(a,b)$ using steps $E=(1,0)$ and $N=(0,1)$, we construct an associated flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ arising from an acyclic graph where bidirectional edges are permitted. We show that the flow polytope $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ admits a subdivision dual to a $w$-simplex, where $w$ is the number of valleys in the path $\barν = EνN$. Refinements of this subdivision can be obtained by reductions of a polynomial $P_ν$ in a generalization of Mészáros' subdivision algebra for acyclic root polytopes where negative roots are allowed. Via an integral equivalence between $\mathcal{F}_{\hat{G}_B(ν)}$ and the product of simplices $Δ_a\times Δ_b$, we thereby obtain a subdivision algebra for a product of two simplices. As a special case, we give a reduction order for reducing $P_ν$ that yields the cyclic $ν$-Tamari complex of Ceballos, Padrol, and Sarmiento.
On Clique Incidence Matrices and Derivatives of Clique Polynomials
The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs (cliques) of $G$, denoted by $C(G,x)$, is called the The clique polynomial of the graph $G$. In this paper, we first introduce some \emph{clique} incidence matrices associated by a simple graph $G$ as a generalization of the classical vertex-edge incidence matrix of $G$. Then, using these clique incidence matrices, we obtain two clique-counting identities that can be used for deriving two combinatorial formulas for the first and the second derivatives of clique polynomials. Finally, we conclude the paper with several open questions and conjectures about possible extensions of our main results for higher derivatives of clique polynomials.

Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a closed path having no zig-zag walks, a kind of non-simple thin polyomino. In this paper we give a combinatorial interpretation of the $h$-polynomial of $K[\mathcal{P}]$, showing that it is the rook polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$. It is known by Rinaldo and Romeo (2021), that if $\mathcal{P}$ is a simple thin polyomino then the $h$-polynomial is equal to the rook polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$ and it is conjectured that this property characterizes all thin polyominoes. Our main demonstrative strategy is to compute the reduced Hilbert-Poincaré series of the coordinate ring attached to a closed path $\mathcal{P}$ having no zig-zag walks, as a combination of the Hilbert-Poincaré series of convenient simple thin polyominoes. As a consequence we prove that the Krull dimension is equal to $\vert V(\mathcal{P})\vert -\mathrm{rank}\, \mathcal{P}$ and the regularity of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ is the rook number of $\mathcal{P}$. Finally we characterize the Gorenstein prime closed paths, proving that $K[\mathcal{P}]$ is Gorenstein if and only if $\mathcal{P}$ consists of maximal blocks of length three.
A faster algorithm for Vertex Cover parameterized by solution size

We describe a new algorithm for vertex cover with runtime $O^*(1.25284^k)$, where $k$ is the size of the desired solution and $O^*$ hides polynomial factors in the input size. This improves over previous runtime of $O^*(1.2738^k)$ due to Chen, Kanj, & Xia (2010) standing for more than a decade. The key to our algorithm is to use a potential function which simultaneously tracks $k$ as well as the optimal value $λ$ of the vertex cover LP relaxation. This approach also allows us to make use of prior algorithms for Maximum Independent Set in bounded-degree graphs and Above-Guarantee Vertex Cover.
The main step in the algorithm is to branch on high-degree vertices, while ensuring that both $k$ and $μ= k - λ$ are decreased at each step. There can be local obstructions in the graph that prevent $μ$ from decreasing in this process; we develop a number of novel branching steps to handle these situations.
Scattered linear sets in a finite projective line and translation planes

Lunardon and Polverino construct a translation plane starting from a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$. In this paper a similar construction of a translation plane $\mathcal A_f$ obtained from any scattered linearized polynomial $f(x)$ in $\mathbb F_{q^t}[x]$ is described and investigated. A class of quasifields giving rise to such planes is defined. Denote by $U_f$ the $\mathbb F_q$-subspace of $\mathbb F_{q^t}^2$ associated with $f(x)$. If $f(x)$ and $f'(x)$ are scattered, then $\mathcal A_f$ and $\mathcal A_{f'}$ are isomorphic if and only if $U_f$ and $U_{f'}$ belong to the same orbit under the action of $Γ\mathrm L(2,q^t)$. This gives rise to as many distinct translation planes as there are inequivalent scattered linearized polynomials. In particular, for any scattered linear set $L$ of maximum rank in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$ there are $c_Γ(L)$ pairwise non-isomorphic translation planes, where $c_Γ(L)$ denotes the $Γ\mathrm L$-class of $L$, as defined by Csajbók, Marino and Polverino. A result by Jha and Johnson allows to describe the automorphism groups of the planes obtained from the linear sets not of pseudoregulus type defined by Lunardon and Polverino.

Equivariant Ehrhart theory generalizes the study of lattice point enumeration to also account for the symmetries of a polytope under a linear group action. We present a catalogue of techniques with applications in this field, including zonotopal decompositions, symmetric triangulations, combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial, and certificates for the (non)existence of invariant non-degenerate hypersurfaces. We apply these methods to several families of examples including hypersimplices, orbit polytopes, and graphic zonotopes, expanding the library of polytopes for which their equivariant Ehrhart theory is known.
Berkovich-Uncu type Partition Inequalities Concerning Impermissible Sets and Perfect Power Frequencies

Recently, Rattan and the first author (Ann. Comb. 25 (2021) 697-728) proved a conjectured inequality of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263-284) concerning partitions with an impermissible part. In this article, we generalize this inequality upon considering t impermissible parts. We compare these with partitions whose certain parts appear with a frequency which is a perfect t^{th} power. Our inequalities hold after a certain bound, which for given t is a polynomial in s, a major improvement over the previously known bound in the case t=1. To prove these inequalities, our methods involve constructing injective maps between the relevant sets of partitions. The construction of these maps crucially involves concepts from analysis and calculus, such as explicit maps used to prove countability of N^t, and Jensen's inequality for convex functions, and then merge them with techniques from number theory such as Frobenius numbers, congruence classes, binary numbers and quadratic residues. We also show a connection of our results to colored partitions. Finally, we pose an open problem which seems to be related to power residues and the almost universality of diagonal ternary quadratic forms.
Determinantal representations and the image of the principal minor map

In this paper we explore determinantal representations of multiaffine polynomials and consequences for the image of various spaces of matrices under the principal minor map. We show that a real multiaffine polynomial has a definite Hermitian determinantal representation if and only if all of its so-called Rayleigh differences factor as Hermitian squares and use this characterization to conclude that the image of the space of Hermitian matrices under the principal minor map is cut out by the orbit of finitely many equations and inequalities under the action of $({\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{R}))^{n} \rtimes S_{n}$. We also study such representations over more general fields with quadratic extensions. Factorizations of Rayleigh differences prove an effective tool for capturing subtle behavior of the principal minor map. In contrast to the Hermitian case, we give examples to show for any field $\mathbb{F}$, there is no finite set of equations whose orbit under $({\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{F}))^{n} \rtimes S_{n}$ cuts out the image of $n\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}$ under the principal minor map for every $n$.

We show that the exterior algebra $Λ_{R}\left[α_{1}, \cdots, α_{n}\right]$, which is the cohomology of the torus $T=(S^{1})^{n}$, and the polynomial ring $\mathbb{R}\left[t_{1}, \ldots, t_{n}\right]$, which is the cohomology of the classifying space $B (S^{1})^{n}=\left(\mathbb{C} \mathbb{P}^{\infty}\right)^{n}$, are $S_{n}$-equivariantly log-concave. We do so by explicitly giving the $S_{n}$-representation maps on the appropriate sequences of tensor products of polynomials or exterior powers and proving that these maps satisfy the hard Lefschetz theorem. Furthermore, we prove that the whole Kähler package, including algebraic analogies of the Poincaré duality, hard Lefschetz, and Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations, holds on the corresponding sequences in an equivariant setting.
A Quantitative Bound For Szemerédi's Theorem for a Complexity One Polynomial Progression over $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$
Let $N$ be a large prime and $P, Q \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ two linearly independent polynomials with $P(0) = Q(0) = 0$. We show that if a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ lacks a progression of the form $(x, x + P(y), x + Q(y), x + P(y) + Q(y))$, then $$|A| \le O\left(\frac{N}{\log_{(O(1))}(N)}\right)$$ where $\log_{C}(N)$ is an iterated logarithm of order $C$ (e.g., $\log_{2}(N) = \log\log(N)$). To establish this bound, we adapt Peluse's (2018) degree lowering argument to the quadratic Fourier analysis setting to obtain quantitative bounds on the true complexity of the above progression. Our method also shows that for a large class of polynomial progressions, if one can establish polynomial-type bounds on the true complexity of those progressions, then one can establish polynomial-type bounds on Szemerédi's theorem for that type of polynomial progression.
Filtrations on combinatorial intersection cohomology and invariants of subdivisions

Motivated by definitions in mixed Hodge theory, we define the weight filtration and the monodromy weight filtration on the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a fan. These filtrations give a natural definition of the multivariable invariants of subdivisions of polytopes, lattice polytopes and fans, namely the mixed $h$-polynomial, the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial, and the mixed $cd$-index, defined by Katz--Stapledon and Dornian--Katz--Tsang. Previously, only the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial had a geometric interpretation, which came from filtrations on the cohomology of a schön hypersurface. Consequently, we generalize a positivity result on the mixed $h$-polynomial by Katz and Stapledon using the relative hard Lefschetz theorem of Karu.

The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentric subdivision of the boundary complex of the simplex is also included.

This paper further generalizes a recent result of Shannon and Ollerton who resurrected an old identity due to Ledin. This paper generalizes the Ledin-Shannon-Ollerton result to all the metallic sequences. The results give closed formulas for the sum of products of powers of the first $n$ integers with the first $n$ members of the metallic sequence. Three key innovations of this paper are i) reducing the proof of the generalization to the solution of a system of 4 simultaneous recursions; ii) use of the shift operation to prove equality of polynomials; and iii) new OEIS sequences arising from the coefficients of the four polynomial families satisfying the 4 simultaneous recursions.

Recently, we introduced the twist polynomials of delta-matroids and gave a characterization of even normal binary delta-matroids whose twist polynomials have only one term and posed a problem: what would happen for odd binary delta-matroids? In this paper, we show that a normal binary delta-matroid whose twist polynomials have only one term if and only if each connected component of the intersection graph of the delta-matroid is either a complete graph of odd order or a single vertex with a loop.

We explore inequalities on linear extensions of posets and make them effective in different ways. First, we study the Björner--Wachs inequality and generalize it to inequalities on order polynomials and their $q$-analogues via direct injections and FKG inequalities. Second, we give an injective proof of the Sidorenko inequality with computational complexity significance, namely that the difference is in $\#P$. Third, we generalize the Sidorenko inequality to posets with small chain intersections and give complexity theoretic applications.

For $0 < λ< 1$ and $n \rightarrow \infty$ pick uniformly at random $λn$ vectors in $\{0,1\}^n$ and let $C$ be the orthogonal complement of their span. Given $0 < γ< \frac12$ with $0 < λ< h(γ)$, let $X$ be the random variable that counts the number of words in $C$ of Hamming weight $i = γn$ (where $i$ is assumed to be an even integer). Linial and Mosheiff determined the asymptotics of the moments of $X$ of all orders $o\left(\frac{n}{\log n}\right)$. In this paper we extend their estimates up to moments of linear order. Our key observation is that the behavior of the suitably normalized $k^{th}$ moment of $X$ is essentially determined by the $k^{th}$ norm of the Krawchouk polynomial $K_i$.
Improved error bounds for the distance distribution of Reed-Solomon codes

We use the generating function approach to derive simple expressions for the factorial moments of the distance distribution over Reed-Solomon codes. We obtain better upper bounds for the error term of a counting formula given by Li and Wan, which gives nontrivial estimates on the number of polynomials over finite fields with prescribed leading coefficients and a given number of linear factors. This improvement leads to new results on the classification of deep holes of Reed Solomon codes.
