Partitions, Multiple Zeta Values and the q-bracket
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a framework for relating certain q-series defined by sums over partitions to multiple zeta values. In particular, we introduce a space of polynomial functions on partitions for which the associated q-series are q-analogues of multiple zeta values. By explicitly describing the (regularized) multiple zeta values one obtains as $q\to 1$, we extend previous results known in this area. Using this together with the fact that other families of functions on partitions, such as shifted symmetric functions, are elements in our space will then give relations among (q-analogues of) multiple zeta values. Conversely, we will show that relations among multiple zeta values can be `lifted' to the world of functions on partitions, which provides new examples of functions where the associated q-series are quasimodular.
Low-degree learning and the metric entropy of polynomials
Let $\mathscr{F}_{n,d}$ be the class of all functions $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to[-1,1]$ on the $n$-dimensional discrete hypercube of degree at most $d$. In the first part of this paper, we prove that any (deterministic or randomized) algorithm which learns $\mathscr{F}_{n,d}$ with $L_2$-accuracy $\varepsilon$ requires at least $Ω((1-\sqrt{\varepsilon})2^d\log n)$ queries for large enough $n$, thus establishing the sharpness as $n\to\infty$ of a recent upper bound of Eskenazis and Ivanisvili (2021). To do this, we show that the $L_2$-packing numbers $\mathsf{M}(\mathscr{F}_{n,d},\|\cdot\|_{L_2},\varepsilon)$ of the concept class $\mathscr{F}_{n,d}$ satisfy the two-sided estimate $$c(1-\varepsilon)2^d\log n \leq \log \mathsf{M}(\mathscr{F}_{n,d},\|\cdot\|_{L_2},\varepsilon) \leq \frac{2^{Cd}\log n}{\varepsilon^4}$$ for large enough $n$, where $c, C>0$ are universal constants. In the second part of the paper, we present a logarithmic upper bound for the randomized query complexity of classes of bounded approximate polynomials whose Fourier spectra are concentrated on few subsets. As an application, we prove new estimates for the number of random queries required to learn approximate juntas of a given degree, functions with rapidly decaying Fourier tails and constant depth circuits of given size. Finally, we obtain bounds for the number of queries required to learn the polynomial class $\mathscr{F}_{n,d}$ without error in the query and random example models.
Analysis of a Gray-Box Operator for Vertex Cover

Combinatorial optimization problems are a prominent application area of evolutionary algorithms, where the (1+1) EA is one of the most investigated. We extend this algorithm by introducing some problem knowledge with a specialized mutation operator which works under the assumption that the number of 1s of a solution is critical, as frequently happens in combinatorial optimization. This slight modification increases the chance to correct wrongly placed bits while preserving the simplicity and problem independence of the (1+1) EA. As an application of our algorithm we examine the vertex cover problem on certain instances, where we show that it leads to asymptotically better runtimes and even finds with higher probability optimal solutions in comparison with the usual (1+1) EA. Precisely, we compare the performance of both algorithms on paths and on complete bipartite graphs of size $n$. Regarding the path we prove that, for a particular initial configuration, the \alg1+1 takes in expectation $Θ(n^4)$ iterations while the modification reduces this to $Θ(n^3)$, and present experimental evidence that such a configuration is reached. Concerning the complete bipartite graph our modification finds the optimum in polynomial time with probability $1-1/2^{Ω(n^ξ)}$ for every positive constant $ξ< 1$, which improves the known probability of $1-1/\text{poly}(n)$ for the (1+1) EA..

DP color functions versus chromatic polynomials (II)
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any connected graph $G$, let $P(G,m)$ and $P_{DP}(G,m)$ denote the chromatic polynomial and DP color function of $G$, respectively. It is known that $P_{DP}(G,m)\le P(G,m)$ holds for every positive integer $m$. Let $DP_\approx$ (resp. $DP_<$) be the set of graphs $G$ for which there exists an integer $M$ such that $P_{DP}(G,m)=P(G,m)$ (resp. $P_{DP}(G,m)<P(G,m)$) holds for all integers $m \ge M$. Determining the sets $DP_\approx$ and $DP_<$ is a key problem on the study of the DP color function. For any edge set $E_0$ of $G$, let $\ell_G(E_0)$ be the length of a shortest cycle $C$ in $G$ such that $|E(C)\cap E_0|$ is odd whenever such a cycle exists, and $\ell_G(E_0)=\infty$ otherwise. Write $\ell_G(E_0)$ as $\ell_G(e)$ if $E_0=\{e\}$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ has a spanning tree $T$ such that $\ell_G(e)$ is odd for each $e\in E(G)\setminus E(T)$, the edges in $E(G)\setminus E(T)$ can be labeled as $e_1,e_2,\cdots, e_q$ with $\ell_G(e_i)\le \ell_G(e_{i+1})$ for all $1\le i\le q-1$ and each edge $e_i$ is contained in a cycle $C_i$ of length $\ell_G(e_i)$ with $E(C_i)\subseteq E(T)\cup \{e_j: 1\le j\le i\}$, then $G$ is a graph in $DP_{\approx}$. As a direct application of this conclusion, all plane near-triangulations and complete multipartite graphs with at least three partite sets belong to $DP_{\approx}$. We also show that if $E^*$ is an edge set of $G$ such that $\ell_{G}(E^*)$ is even and $E^*$ satisfies certain conditions, then $G$ belongs to $DP_<$. In particular, if $\ell_G(E^*)=4$, where $E^*$ is a set of edges between two disjoint vertex subsets of $G$, then $G$ belongs to $DP_<$. Both results extend known ones in [DP color functions versus chromatic polynomials, $Advances\ in\ Applied\ Mathematics$ 134 (2022), article 102301].
The 2-colouring problem for $(m,n)$-mixed graphs with switching is polynomial
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no 2, Graph Theory (November 3, 2022) dmtcs:9242 • View PublicationBIB
A mixed graph is a set of vertices together with an edge set and an arc set. An $(m,n)$-mixed graph $G$ is a mixed graph whose edges are each assigned one of $m$ colours, and whose arcs are each assigned one of $n$ colours. A \emph{switch} at a vertex $v$ of $G$ permutes the edge colours, the arc colours, and the arc directions of edges and arcs incident with $v$. The group of all allowed switches is $Γ$. Let $k \geq 1$ be a fixed integer and $Γ$ a fixed permutation group. We consider the problem that takes as input an $(m,n)$-mixed graph $G$ and asks if there a sequence of switches at vertices of $G$ with respect to $Γ$ so that the resulting $(m,n)$-mixed graph admits a homomorphism to an $(m,n)$-mixed graph on $k$ vertices. Our main result establishes this problem can be solved in polynomial time for $k \leq 2$, and is NP-hard for $k \geq 3$. This provides a step towards a general dichotomy theorem for the $Γ$-switchable homomorphism decision problem.

Asymptotic distribution of the number of zeros in random polynomials in a given equivalence class over a finite field
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hayes equivalence is defined on monic polynomials over a finite field $\fq$ in terms of the prescribed leading coefficients and the residue classes modulo a given monic polynomial $Q$. We study the distribution of the number of zeros in a random polynomial over finite fields in a given Hayes equivalence class. It is well known that the number of distinct zeros of a random polynomial over $\fq$ is asymptotically Poisson with mean 1. We show that this is also true for random polynomials in any given Hayes equivalence class. Asymptotic formulas are also given for the number of such polynomials when the degree of such polynomials is proportional to $q$ and the degree of $Q$ and the number of prescribed leading coefficients are bounded by $\sqrt{q}$. When $Q=1$, the problem is equivalent to the study of the distance distribution in Reed-Solomon codes. Our asymptotic formulas extend some earlier results and imply that all words for a large family of Reed-Solomon codes are ordinary, which further supports the well-known {\em Deep-Hole} Conjecture.
Moments, Sums of Squares, and Tropicalization
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use tropicalization to study the duals to cones of nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares on a semialgebraic set $S$. The truncated cones of moments of measures supported on the set $S$ is dual to nonnegative polynomials on $S$, while "pseudo-moments" are dual to sums of squares approximations to nonnegative polynomials. We provide explicit combinatorial descriptions of tropicalizations of the moment and pseudo-moment cones, and demonstrate their usefulness in distinguishing between nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares. We give examples that show new limitations of sums of squares approximations of nonnegative polynomials. When the semialgebraic set is defined by binomial inequalites, its moment and pseudo-moment cones are closed under Hadamard product. In this case, their tropicalizations are polyhedral cones that encode all binomial inequalities on the moment and pseudo-moment cones.

The spectrum of the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments
Published • View PublicationBIB
Grigoriev (2001) and Laurent (2003) independently showed that the sum-of-squares hierarchy of semidefinite programs does not exactly represent the hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^n$ until degree at least $n$ of the hierarchy. Laurent also observed that the pseudomoment matrices her proof constructs appear to have surprisingly simple and recursively structured spectra as $n$ increases. While several new proofs of the Grigoriev-Laurent lower bound have since appeared, Laurent's observations have remained unproved. We give yet another, representation-theoretic proof of the lower bound, which also yields exact formulae for the eigenvalues of the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments. Using these, we prove and elaborate on Laurent's observations. Our arguments have two features that may be of independent interest. First, we show that the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments are a special case of a Gram matrix construction of pseudomoments proposed by Bandeira and Kunisky (2020). Second, we find a new realization of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to Young diagrams with two rows, as spaces of multivariate polynomials that are multiharmonic with respect to an equilateral simplex.

Robust Radical Sylvester-Gallai Theorem for Quadratics
We prove a robust generalization of a Sylvester-Gallai type theorem for quadratic polynomials, generalizing the result in [S'20]. More precisely, given a parameter $0 < δ\leq 1$ and a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of irreducible and pairwise independent polynomials of degree at most 2, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is a $(δ, 2)$-radical Sylvester-Gallai configuration if for any polynomial $F_i \in \mathcal{F}$, there exist $δ(|\mathcal{F}| -1)$ polynomials $F_j$ such that $|\mathrm{rad}(F_i, F_j) \cap \mathcal{F}| \geq 3$, that is, the radical of $F_i, F_j$ contains a third polynomial in the set. In this work, we prove that any $(δ, 2)$-radical Sylvester-Gallai configuration $\mathcal{F}$ must be of low dimension: that is $$\dim \mathrm{span}(\mathcal{F}) = \mathrm{poly}(1/δ).$$

Uniform estimates for smooth polynomials over finite fields
We establish new estimates for the number of $m$-smooth polynomials of degree $n$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the main term involves the number of $m$-smooth permutations on $n$ elements. Our estimates imply that the probability that a random polynomial of degree $n$ is $m$-smooth is asymptotic to the probability that a random permutation on $n$ elements is $m$-smooth, uniformly for $m\ge (2+\varepsilon)\log_q n$ as $q^n \to \infty$. This should be viewed as an unconditional analogue of works of Hildebrand and of Saias in the integer setting, which assume the Riemann Hypothesis. Moreover, we show that the range $m \ge (2+\varepsilon)\log_q n$ is sharp; this should be viewed as a resolution of a (polynomial analogue of a) conjecture of Hildebrand. As an application of our estimates, we determine the rate of decay in the asymptotic formula for the expected degree of the largest prime factor of a random polynomial.
Max Weight Independent Set in graphs with no long claws: An analog of the Gyárfás' path argument
Published • View PublicationBIB
We revisit recent developments for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in graphs excluding a subdivided claw $S_{t,t,t}$ as an induced subgraph [Chudnovsky, Pilipczuk, Pilipczuk, Thomassé, SODA 2020] and provide a subexponential-time algorithm with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n}\log n)}$ and a quasipolynomial-time approximation scheme with improved running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-1} \log^{5} n)}$. The Gyárfás' path argument, a powerful tool that is the main building block for many algorithms in $P_t$-free graphs, ensures that given an $n$-vertex $P_t$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of at most $t-1$ vertices, such that every connected component of $G-N[P]$ has at most $n/2$ vertices. Our main technical contribution is an analog of this result for $S_{t,t,t}$-free graphs: given an $n$-vertex $S_{t,t,t}$-free graph, in polynomial time we can find a set $P$ of $\mathcal{O}(t \log n)$ vertices and an extended strip decomposition (an appropriate analog of the decomposition into connected components) of $G-N[P]$ such that every particle (an appropriate analog of a connected component to recurse on) of the said extended strip decomposition has at most $n/2$ vertices.

Combinatorial expressions of Hopf polynomial invariants
In 2017 Aguiar and Ardila provided a generic way to construct polynomial invariants of combinatorial objects using the notions of Hopf monoids and characters of Hopf monoids. They show that it is possible to find a combinatorial interpretation of these polynomials over negative integers using the antipode and give a cancellation-free grouping-free formula for the antipode on generalized permutahedra. In this work, we give a combinatorial interpretation of these polynomials over both positive integers and negative integers for the Hopf monoids of generalized permutahedra and hypergraphs and for every character on these two Hopf monoids. In the case of hypergraphs, we present two different proofs for the interpretation on negative integers. We then deduce similar results on other combinatorial objects including graphs, simplicial complexes and building sets.

Blowup polynomials and delta-matroids of graphs
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 86B (2022), Article #42 • Search Publication
For every finite simple connected graph $G = (V,E)$, we introduce an invariant, its blowup-polynomial $p_G(\{ n_v : v \in V \})$. This is obtained by dividing the determinant of the distance matrix of its blowup graph $G[{\bf n}]$ (containing $n_v$ copies of $v$) by an exponential factor. We show that $p_G({\bf n})$ is indeed a polynomial function in the sizes $n_v$, which is moreover multi-affine and real-stable. This associates a hitherto unexplored delta-matroid to each graph $G$; and we provide a second unexplored one for each tree. As another consequence, we obtain a new characterization of complete multipartite graphs, via the homogenization at $-1$ of $p_G$ being completely/strongly log-concave, i.e., Lorentzian. (These results extend to weighted graphs.) Finally, we show $p_G$ is indeed a graph invariant, i.e., $p_G$ and its symmetries (in the variables ${\bf n}$) recover $G$ and its isometries, respectively.

De Moivre and Bell polynomials
We survey a family of polynomials that are very useful in all kinds of power series manipulations, and appearing more frequently in the literature. Applications to formal power series, generating functions and asymptotic expansions are described, and we discuss the related work of De Moivre, Arbogast and Bell.
Locally checkable problems parameterized by clique-width
We continue the study initiated by Bonomo-Braberman and Gonzalez in 2020 on $r$-locally checkable problems. We propose a dynamic programming algorithm that takes as input a graph with an associated clique-width expression and solves a $1$-locally checkable problem under certain restrictions. We show that it runs in polynomial time in graphs of bounded clique-width, when the number of colors of the locally checkable problem is fixed. Furthermore, we present a first extension of our framework to global properties by taking into account the sizes of the color classes, and consequently enlarge the set of problems solvable in polynomial time with our approach in graphs of bounded clique-width. As examples, we apply this setting to show that, when parameterized by clique-width, the $[k]-$Roman domination problem is FPT, and the $k$-community problem, Max PDS and other variants are XP.

Symmetric functions and a natural framework for combinatorial and number theoretic sequences
Certain triples of power series, considered by I. Macdonald, give a natural framework for many combinatorial and number theoretic sequences, such as the Stirling, Bernoulli and harmonic numbers and partitions of different kinds. The power series in such a triple are closely linked by identities coming from the theory of symmetric functions. We extend the work of Z-H. Sun, who developed similar ideas, and Macdonald, revealing more of the structure of these triples. De Moivre polynomials play a key role in this study.
Generating Posets with Interfaces
We generate and count isomorphism classes of gluing-parallel posets with interfaces (iposets) on up to eight points, and on up to ten points with interfaces removed. In order to do so, we introduce a new class of iposets with full interfaces and show that considering these is sufficient. We also describe the software (written in Julia) that we have used for our exploration and define a new incomplete isomorphism invariant which may be computed in polynomial time yet identifies only very few pairs of non-isomorphic iposets.

We give elementary self-contained proofs of the strong Mason conjecture recently proved by Anari at. al. (arXiv:1811.01600) and Brändén--Huh (arXiv:1902.03719), and of the classical Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality. Both proofs use the combinatorial atlas technology recently introduced by the authors (arXiv:2110.10740). We also give a formal relationship between combinatorial atlases and Lorentzian polynomials.
