Hamilton cycles, minimum degree and bipartite holes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetildeα(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetildeα(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetildeα(G)$.

A lattice point counting generalisation of the Tutte polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial for matroids is not directly applicable to polymatroids. For instance, deletion-contraction properties do not hold. We construct a polynomial for polymatroids which behaves similarly to the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, and in fact contains the same information as the Tutte polynomial when we restrict to matroids. This polynomial is constructed using lattice point counts in the Minkowski sum of the base polytope of a polymatroid and scaled copies of the standard simplex. We also show that, in the matroid case, our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign, with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition.

Symbolic powers of cover ideal of very well-covered and bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph such that $J(G)$ has linear resolution, then $J(G)^{(k)}$ has linear resolution, for every integer $k\geq 1$. We also prove that for a every very well-covered graph $G$, the depth of symbolic powers of $J(G)$ forms a non-increasing sequence. Finally, we determine a linear upper bound for the regularity of powers of cover ideal of bipartite graph.

Depth, Stanley depth and regularity of ideals associated to graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $J=J(G)$ is its cover ideal. We prove that ${\rm sdepth}(J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, where $ν_{o}(G)$ is the ordered matching number of $G$. We also prove the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(J^k)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(S/J^k)$, for every integer $k\gg 0$, when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover, we provide an elementary proof for the known inequality ${\rm reg}(S/I)\leq ν_{o}(G)$.

A bijective proof of the Cauchy identity for Grothendieck polynomials
We consider pairs of a set-valued column-strict tableau and a reverse plane partition of the same shape. We introduce algortithms for them, which implies a bijective proof for the finite sum Cauchy identity for Grothendieck polynomials and dual Grothendieck polynomials.
On local structures of cubicity 2 graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 2-stab unit interval graph (2SUIG) is an axes-parallel unit square intersection graph where the unit squares intersect either of the two fixed lines parallel to the $X$-axis, distance $1 + ε$ ($0 < ε< 1$) apart. This family of graphs allow us to study local structures of unit square intersection graphs, that is, graphs with cubicity 2. The complexity of determining whether a tree has cubicity 2 is unknown while the graph recognition problem for unit square intersection graph is known to be NP-hard. We present a polynomial time algorithm for recognizing trees that admit a 2SUIG representation.

Schubert polynomials, slide polynomials, Stanley symmetric functions and quasi-Yamanouchi pipe dreams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.
Complexity of equitable tree-coloring problems
A $(q,t)$\emph{-tree-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a $q$-coloring of vertices of $G$ such that the subgraph induced by each color class is a forest of maximum degree at most $t.$ A $(q,\infty)$\emph{-tree-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a $q$-coloring of vertices of $G$ such that the subgraph induced by each color class is a forest. Wu, Zhang, and Li introduced the concept of \emph{equitable $(q, t)$-tree-coloring} (respectively, \emph{equitable $(q, \infty)$-tree-coloring}) which is a $(q,t)$-tree-coloring (respectively, $(q, \infty)$-tree-coloring) such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. Among other results, they obtained a sharp upper bound on the minimum $p$ such that $K_{n,n}$ has an equitable $(q, 1)$-tree-coloring for every $q\geq p.$ In this paper, we obtain a polynomial time criterion to decide if a complete bipartite graph has an equitable $(q,t)$-tree-coloring or an equitable $(q,\infty)$-tree-coloring. Nevertheless, deciding if a graph $G$ in general has an equitable $(q,t)$-tree-coloring or an equitable $(q,\infty)$-tree-coloring is NP-complete.

New identities for binary Krawtchouk polynomials, binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
We obtain new combinatorial identities for integral values of binary Krawtchouk polynomials $K^{2m}_p(x)$, $0\le p\le 2m$, by computing the characters of the $p$-exterior representations on certain elements of order 2 of $\mathrm{SO}(2m)$. From this identities, we deduce several new relations for binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers.

Primitive transformation shift registers of order two over fields of characteristic two
We consider the problem of enumeration of primitive TSRs of order n over any finite field. Here we prove the existence of primitive TSRs of order two over binary field extensions. Moreover we give a general search algorithm for primitive TSRs of odd order over any finite field and in particular of order two over fields of characteristic 2. We also give certain bounds on the number of primitive TSRs in special cases and propose a conjecture regarding the existence of certain special type of primitive polynomials, which answers the existence of primitive TSRs of odd order n over Fqm and primitive TSRs of order greater than 3 over binary field extensions..

The unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset
We prove the unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset, which was conjectured by Kirillov. First, based on a result due to Stanley, we show that this polynomial coincides with the $W$-polynomial for the zig-zag poset with some natural labeling. Then, its unimodality immediately follows from a result of Gasharov, which states that the $W$-polynomials of naturally labeled graded posets of rank $1$ or $2$ are unimodal.

On chromatic functors and stable partitions of graphs
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 60 (2017) 154-164 • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic functor of a simple graph is a functorization of the chromatic polynomial. M. Yoshinaga showed in \cite{Yoshinaga2015} that two finite graphs have isomorphic chromatic functors if and only if they have the same chromatic polynomial. The key ingredient in the proof is the use of stable partitions of graphs. The latter is shown to be closely related to chromatic functors. In this note, we further investigate some interesting properties of chromatic functors associated to simple graphs using stable partitions. Our first result is the determination of the group of natural automorphisms of the chromatic functor, which is in general a larger group than the automorphism group of the graph. The second result is that the composition of the chromatic functor associated to a finite graph restricted to the category $\mathrm{FI}$ of finite sets and injections with the free functor into the category of complex vector spaces yields a consistent sequence of representations of symmetric groups which is representation stable in the sense of Church-Farb \cite{Church2013}.

Chromatic roots and minor-closed families of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a minor-closed class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$, what is the infimum of the non-trivial roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G \in \mathcal{G}$? When $\mathcal{G}$ is the class of all graphs, the answer is known to be $32/27$. We answer this question exactly for three minor-closed classes of graphs. Furthermore, we conjecture precisely when the value is larger than $32/27$.

Shortest (A+B)-path packing via hafnian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Björklund and Husfeldt developed a randomized polynomial time algorithm to solve the shortest two disjoint paths problem. Their algorithm is based on computation of permanents modulo 4 and the isolation lemma. In this paper, we consider the following generalization of the shortest two disjoint paths problem, and develop a similar algebraic algorithm. The shortest perfect $(A+B)$-path packing problem is: given an undirected graph $G$ and two disjoint node subsets $A,B$ with even cardinalities, find a shortest $|A|/2+|B|/2$ disjoint paths whose ends are both in $A$ or both in $B$. Besides its NP-hardness, we prove that this problem can be solved in randomized polynomial time if $|A|+|B|$ is fixed. Our algorithm basically follows the framework of Björklund and Husfeldt but uses a new technique: computation of hafnian modulo $2^k$ combined with Gallai's reduction from $T$-paths to matchings. We also generalize our technique for solving other path packing problems, and discuss its limitation.

Concatenation theorems for anti-Gowers-uniform functions and Host-Kra characteristic factors
Published in Discrete Analysis 2016:13, 60 pp • View PublicationBIB
We establish a number of "concatenation theorems" that assert, roughly speaking, that if a function exhibits "polynomial" (or "Gowers anti-uniform", "uniformly almost periodic", or "nilsequence") behaviour in two different directions separately, then it also exhibits the same behavior (but at higher degree) in both directions jointly. Among other things, this allows one to control averaged local Gowers uniformity norms by global Gowers uniformity norms. In a sequel to this paper, we will apply such control to obtain asymptotics for "polynomial progressions" $n+P_1(r),\dots,n+P_k(r)$ in various sets of integers, such as the prime numbers.

Analytic number theory for 0-cycles
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 166 (2019) 123-146 • View PublicationBIB
There is a well-known analogy between integers and polynomials over $F_q$, and a vast literature on analytic number theory for polynomials. From a geometric point of view, polynomials are equivalent to effective 0-cycles on the affine line. This leads one to ask: Can the analogy between integers and polynomials be extended to 0-cycles on more general varieties? In this paper we study prime factorization of effective 0-cycles on an arbitrary connected variety $V$ over $F_q$, emphasizing the analogy between integers and 0-cycles. For example, inspired by the works of Granville and Rhoades, we prove that the prime factors of 0-cycles are typically Poisson distributed.

Sums of squares of Krawtchouk polynomials, Catalan numbers, and some algebras over the Boolean lattice
Writing the values of Krawtchouk polynomials as matrices, we consider weighted partial sums along columns. For the general case, we find an identity that, in the symmetric case yields a formula for such partial sums. Complete sums of squares along columns involve "Super Catalan" numbers. We look as well for particular values (matrix entries) involving the Catalan numbers. Properties considered and developed in this work are applied to calculations of various dimensions that describe the structure of some *-algebras over the Boolean lattice based on inclusion/superset relations expressed algebraically using zeons [zero-square elements].

The number of linear transformations defined on a subspace with given invariant factors
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 532:146 - 161, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite-dimensional vector space $V$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a subspace $W$ of $V$, we consider the problem of counting linear transformations $T:W\to V$ which have prescribed invariant factors. The case $W=V$ is a well-studied problem that is essentially equivalent to counting the number of square matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in a conjugacy class and an explicit formula is known in this case. On the other hand, the case of general $W$ is also an interesting problem and there hasn't been substantive progress in this case for over two decades, barring a special case where all the invariant factors of $T$ are of degree zero. We extend this result to the case of arbitrary $W$ by giving an explicit counting formula. As an application of our results, we give new proofs of some recent enumerative results in linear control theory and derive an extension of the Gerstenhaber-Reiner formula for the number of square matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with given characteristic polynomial.
