Which series are Hilbert series of graded modules over polynomial rings?
Published in Mathematische Nachrichten 293(1), pp. 129-146 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Let $S$ be a multigraded polynomial ring such that the degree of each variable is a unit vector; so $S$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring of a product of projective spaces. In this setting, we characterize the formal Laurent series which arise as Hilbert series of finitely generated $S$-modules. Also we provide necessary conditions for a formal Laurent series to be the Hilbert series of a finitely generated module with a given depth. In the bigraded case (corresponding to the product of two projective spaces), we completely classify the Hilbert series of finitely generated modules of positive depth.

Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules and Pieri and dual Pieri rules for Schubert polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their 1987 paper Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz defined certain modules, which we call KP modules, over the upper triangular Lie algebra whose characters are Schubert polynomials. In a previous work the author showed that the tensor product of KP modules always has a KP filtration, i.e. a filtration whose each successive quotients are isomorphic to KP modules. In this paper we explicitly construct such filtrations for certain special cases of these tensor product modules, namely $\mathcal{S}_w \otimes S^d(K^i)$ and $\mathcal{S}_w \otimes \bigwedge^d(K^i)$, corresponding to Pieri and dual Pieri rules for Schubert polynomials.

Some Aspects of the Wiener Index for Sun Graphs
The Wiener index $W(G)$ is the sum of distances of all pairs of vertices of the graph $G$. The Wiener polarity index $W_{p}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the number of unordered pairs of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ such that the distance $d_{G}(u,v)$ between $u$ and $v$ is $3$. In this paper the Wiener and the Wiener polarity indices of sun graphs are computed. A relationship between those indices with some other topological indices are presented. Finally, we find the Hosoya (Wiener) polynomial for sun graphs.

Tuenter polynomials and a Catalan triangle
We consider Tuenter polynomials as linear combinations of descending factorials and show that coefficients of these linear combinations are expressed via a Catalan triangle of numbers. We also describe a triangle of coefficients in terms of some polynomials.

On the derivative at $t = 1$ of the skew-growth functions for Artin monoids
Let $G_{M}^{+}$ be the Artin monoid of finite type generated by the letters $a_i, i\in I$ with respect to a Coxeter matrix $M$ that is equipped with the degree map $°\!:\!G_{M}^{+} \to\!\Z_{\ge0}$ defined by assigning to each equivalence class of words the length of the words, and let $N_{M, °}(t)\!:=\!\!\sum_{J \subset I}(-1)^{\#J} t^{°(Δ_{J})}$ be the skew-growth function, where the summation index $J$ runs over all subsets of $I$ and $Δ_{J}$ is the fundamental element in $G_{M}^{+}$ associated to the set $J$. In this article, we will calculate the derivative at $t = 1$ of the polynomial $N_{M, °}(t)$. As a result, we show that the polynomial $N_{M, °}(t)$ has a simple root at $t = 1$.

Zero loci of skew-growth functions for dual Artin monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the skew-growth function of a dual Artin monoid of finite type P has exactly rank(P) =: l simple real zeros on the interval (0, 1]. The proofs for types A_l and B_l are based on an unexpected fact that the skew-growth functions, up to a trivial factor, are expressed by Jacobi polynomials due to a Rodrigues type formula in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. The skew-growth functions for type D_l also satisfy Rodrigues type formulae, but the relation with Jacobi polynomials is not straightforward, and the proof is intricate. We show that the smallest root converges to zero as the rank l of all the above types tend to infinity.

An easy upper bound for Ramsey numbers
It is observed that the conjugacy growth series of the infinite finitary symmetric group with respect to the generating set of transpositions is the generating series of the partition function. Other conjugacy growth series are computed, for other generating sets, for restricted permutational wreath products of finite groups by the finitary symmetric group, and for alternating groups. Similar methods are used to compute usual growth polynomials and conjugacy growth polynomials for finite symmetric groups and alternating groups, with respect to various generating sets of transpositions. Computations suggest a class of finite graphs, that we call partition-complete, which generalizes the class of semi-hamiltonian graphs, and which is of independent interest. Numerical evidences indicate that the coefficients of a series related to the finitary alternating group seem to satisfy congruence relations reminiscent of Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function.

Structure coefficients for Jack characters: approximate factorization property
Jack characters are a generalization of the characters of the symmetric groups; a generalization that is related to Jack symmetric functions. We investigate the structure coefficients for Jack characters; they are a generalization of the connection coefficients for the symmetric groups. More specifically, we study the cumulants which measure the discrepancy between these structure coefficients and the simplistic structure coefficients related to the disjoint product. We show that Jack characters satisfy approximate factorization property: their cumulants are of very small degree and the character related to a given partition is approximately equal to the product of the characters related to its parts. This result will play a key role in the proof of Gaussianity of fluctuations for a class of random Young diagrams related to the Jack polynomials.

The Rudin-Shapiro polynomials and The Fekete polynomials are not $L^α$-flat
We establish that the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials are not $L^α$-flat, for any $α\geq 0$. We further prove that the "truncated" Rudin-Shapiro sequence cannot generate a sequence of $L^α$-flat polynomials, for any $α\geq 0$. In the appendix, we present a simple proof of the fact that the Fekete polynomials and the modified or shifted Fekete polynomials are not $L^α$-flat, for any $α\geq 0$.

Restrictions of free arrangements and the division theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a survey and research note on the modified Orlik conjecture derived from the division theorem introduced in [2]. The division theorem is a generalization of classical addition-deletion theorems for free arrangements. The division theorem can be regarded as a modified converse of the Orlik's conjecture with a combinatorial condition, i.e., an arrangement is free if the restriction is free and the characteristic polynomial of the restriction divides that of an arrangement. In this article we recall, summarize, pose and re-formulate some of results and problems related to the division theorem based on [2], and study the modified Orlik's conjecture with partial answers.

Twisted cohomology of configuration spaces and spaces of maximal tori via point-counting
We consider two families of algebraic varieties $Y_n$ indexed by natural numbers $n$: the configuration space of unordered $n$-tuples of distinct points on $\mathbb{C}$, and the space of unordered $n$-tuples of linearly independent lines in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Let $W_n$ be any sequence of virtual $S_n$-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute $H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ for all $i$ and all $n$ in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers $\lim_{n\to\infty}\dim H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ are linearly recurrent in $i$. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the $F_q$-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.

The Jones polynomial and functions of positive type on the oriented Jones-Thompson groups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The pioneering work of Jones and Kauffman unveiled a fruitful relationship between statistical mechanics and knot theory. Recently, Jones introduced two subgroups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$ of the Thompson groups $F$ and $T$, respectively, together with a procedure that associates an oriented link diagram to any element of these subgroups. Moreover, several specializations of some well-known polynomial link invariants can be seen as functions of positive type on the Thompson groups or the Jones-Thompson subgroups. One important example is provided by suitable evaluations of the Jones polynomial, which are thus associated with certain unitary representations of the groups $\vec{F}$ and $\vec{T}$. Within this framework, we discuss an alternative approach that relies on some partition function interpretation of the Jones polynomial, and also exhibit more examples associated with other link invariants, notably the two-variable Kauffman polynomial and the HOMFLY polynomial. In the unoriented case, extending our previous results, we also show by similar methods that certain evaluations of the Tutte polynomial and of the Kauffman bracket, suitably renormalized, yield functions of positive type on $T$.

A Semidefinite Hierarchy for Disjointly Constrained Multilinear Programming
Disjointly constrained multilinear programming concerns the problem of maximizing a multilinear function on the product of finitely many disjoint polyhedra. While maximizing a linear function on a polytope (linear programming) is known to be solvable in polynomial time, even bilinear programming is NP-hard. Based on a reformulation of the problem in terms of sum-of-squares polynomials, we study a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations to the problem. It follows from the general theory that the sequence of optimal values converges asymptotically to the optimal value of the multilinear program. We show that the semidefinite hierarchy converges generically in finitely many steps to the optimal value of the multilinear problem. We outline two applications of the main result. For nondegenerate bimatrix games, a Nash equilibrium can be computed by the sum of squares approach in finitely many steps. Under an additional geometric condition, the NP-complete containment problem for projections of $\mathcal{H}$-polytopes can be decided in finitely many steps.

Double roots of random polynomials with integer coefficients
Published in Electronic Jounral of Probability 22 (2017), paper No. 10 • View PublicationBIB
We consider random polynomials whose coefficients are independent and identically distributed on the integers. We prove that if the coefficient distribution has bounded support and its probability to take any particular value is at most $\tfrac12$, then the probability of the polynomial to have a double root is dominated by the probability that either $0$, $1$, or $-1$ is a double root up to an error of $o(n^{-2})$. We also show that if the support of coefficient distribution excludes $0$ then the double root probability is $O(n^{-2})$. Our result generalizes a similar result of Peled, Sen and Zeitouni for Littlewood polynomials.

On the permanental nullity and matching number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, let $ν(G)$ and $A(G)$ denote the matching number and adjacency matrix of $G$, respectively. The permanental polynomial of $G$ is defined as $π(G,x)={\rm per}(Ix-A(G))$. The permanental nullity of $G$, denoted by $η_{per}(G)$, is the multiplicity of the zero root of $π(G,x)$. In this paper, we use the Gallai-Edmonds structure theorem to derive a concise formula which reveals the relationship between the permanental nullity and the matching number of a graph. Furthermore, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph $G$ to have $η_{per}(G)=0$. As applications, we show that every unicyclic graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $n-2ν(G)-1 \le η_{per}(G) \le n-2ν(G)$, that the permanental nullity of the line graph of a graph is either zero or one, and that the permanental nullity of a factor critical graph is always zero.

Co-adjoint polynomial
In this note we study a certain graph polynomial arising from a special recursion. This recursion is a member of a family of four recursions where the other three recursions belong to the chromatic polynomial, the modified matching polynomial, and the adjoint polynomial, respectively. The four polynomials share many common properties, for instance all of them are of exponential type, i. e., they satisfy the identity $$\sum_{S\subseteq V(G)}f(G[S],x)f(G[V\setminus S],y)=f(G,x+y)$$ for every graph $G$. It turns out that the new graph polynomial is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial.

An explicit prime geodesic theorem for discrete tori and the hypergeometric functions
Published in Math. Z., 289 (2018) No. 1, 361 -- 376 • View PublicationBIB
The discrete tori are graph analogues of the real tori, which are defined by the Cayley graphs of a finite product of finite cyclic groups. In this paper, using the theory of the heat kernel on the discrete tori established by Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson, we derive an explicit prime geodesic theorem for the discrete tori, which is not an asymptotic formula. To describe the formula, we need generalizations of the classical Jacobi polynomials, which are defined by the Lauricella multivariable hypergeometric function of type C.

Independent Sets in Classes Related to Chair/Fork-free Graphs
Published in LNCS 9602 (2016) pp. 224-232 • View PublicationBIB
The Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem on graphs with vertex weights asks for a set of pairwise nonadjacent vertices of maximum total weight. MWIS is known to be $NP$-complete in general, even under various restrictions. Let $S_{i,j,k}$ be the graph consisting of three induced paths of lengths $i, j, k$ with a common initial vertex. The complexity of the MWIS problem for $S_{1, 2, 2}$-free graphs, and for $S_{1, 1, 3}$-free graphs are open. In this paper, we show that the MWIS problem can solved in polynomial time for ($S_{1, 2, 2}$, $S_{1, 1, 3}$, co-chair)-free graphs, by analyzing the structure of the subclasses of this class of graphs. This extends some known results in the literature.

Hall polynomials, inverse Kostka polynomials and puzzles

We study two different one-parameter generalizations of Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, namely Hall polynomials and generalized inverse Kostka polynomials, and derive new combinatorial formulae for them. Our combinatorial expressions are closely related to puzzles, originally introduced by Knutson and Tao in their work on the equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian.

Copositivity Detection of Tensors: Theory and Algorithm
Published • View PublicationBIB
A symmetric tensor is called copositive if it generates a multivariate form taking nonnegative values over the nonnegative orthant. Copositive tensors have found important applications in polynomial optimization and tensor complementarity problems. In this paper, we consider copositivity detection of tensors both from theoretical and computational points of view. After giving several necessary conditions for copositive tensors, we propose several new criteria for copositive tensors based on the representation of the multivariate form in barycentric coordinates with respect to the standard simplex and simplicial partitions. It is verified that, as the partition gets finer and finer, the concerned conditions eventually capture all strictly copositive tensors. Based on the obtained theoretical results with the help of simplicial partitions, we propose a numerical method to judge whether a tensor is copositive or not. The preliminary numerical results confirm our theoretical findings.
