A Density Increment Approach to Roth's Theorem in the Primes
We prove that if $A$ is any set of prime numbers satisfying \[ \sum_{a\in A}\frac{1}{a}=\infty, \] then $A$ must contain a $3$-term arithmetic progression. This is accomplished by combining the transference principle with a density increment argument, exploiting the structure of the primes to obtain a large density increase at each step of the iteration. The argument shows that for any $B>0$, and $N>N_{0}(B)$, if $A$ is a subset of primes contained in $\{1,\dots,N\}$ with relative density $α(N)=(|A|\log N)/N$ at least \[ α(N)\gg_{B}\left(\log\log N\right)^{-B} \] then $A$ contains a $3$-term arithmetic progression.

The sequence $(x_n)_{n\in\mathbb N} = (2,5,15,51,187,\dots)$ given by the rule $x_n=(2^n+1)(2^{n-1}+1)/3$ appears in several seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. For example, $x_n$ is the density of a language of words of length $n$ with four different letters. It is also the cardinality of the quotient of $(\mathbb Z_2\times \mathbb Z_2)^n$ under the left action of the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. In this paper we show how these two interpretations of $x_n$ are related to each other. More generally, for prime numbers $p$ we show a correspondence between a quotient of $(\mathbb Z_p\times\mathbb Z_p)^n$ and a language with $p^2$ letters and words of length $n$.
Hankel Determinant Calculus for the Thue-Morse and related sequences

The Hankel determinants of certain automatic sequences $f$ are evaluated, based on a calculation modulo a prime number. In most cases, the Hankel determinants of automatic sequences do not have any closed-form expressions; the traditional methods, such as $LU$-decompo\-si\-tion and Jacobi continued fraction, cannot be applied directly. Our method is based on a simple idea: the Hankel determinants of each sequence $g$ equal to $f$ modulo $p$ are equal to the Hankel determinants of $f$ modulo $p$. The clue then consists of finding a nice sequence $g$, whose Hankel determinants have closed-form expressions.
Several examples are presented, including a result saying that the Hankel determinants of the Thue-Morse sequence are nonzero, first proved by Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen using determinant manipulation. The present approach shortens the proof of the latter result significantly. We also prove that the corresponding Hankel determinants do not vanish when the powers $2^n$ in the infinite product defining the $\pm 1$ Thue--Morse sequence are replaced by $3^n$.

The celebrated Green-Tao theorem states that the prime numbers contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. We give an exposition of the proof, incorporating several simplifications that have been discovered since the original paper.
The coefficients of the period polynomials
A general description of the Viète coefficients of the gaussian period polynomials is given, in terms of certain symmetric representations of the subgroups and the corresponding quotient groups of the multiplicative group \mathbf{F}_{p}^{*} of a finite prime field of characteristics p, an odd prime number. The known values of these coefficients are recovered by this technique and further results of general nature are presented.
A distributed prime sieving algorithm based on Scheduling by Multiple Edge Reversal
This paper presents a new distributed approach for generating all prime numbers in a given interval of integers. From Eratosthenes, who elaborated the first prime sieve (more than 2000 years ago), to the current generation of parallel computers, which have permitted to reach larger bounds on the interval or to obtain previous results in a shorter time, prime numbers generation still represents an attractive domain of research and plays a central role in cryptography. We propose a fully distributed algorithm for finding all primes in the interval $[2\ldots, n]$, based on the \emph{wheel sieve} and the SMER (\emph{Scheduling by Multiple Edge Reversal}) multigraph dynamics. Given a multigraph $\mathcal{M}$ of arbitrary topology, having $N$ nodes, a SMER-driven system is defined by the number of directed edges (arcs) between any two nodes of $\mathcal{M}$, and by the global period length of all "arc reversals" in $\mathcal{M}$. The new prime number generation method inherits the distributed and parallel nature of SMER and requires at most $n + \lfloor \sqrt{n}\rfloor$ time steps. The message complexity achieves at most $nΔ_N + \lfloor \sqrt{n}\rfloor Δ_N$, where $1\le Δ_N\le N - 1$ is the maximal multidegree of $\mathcal{M}$, and the maximal amount of memory space required per process is $\mathcal{O}(n)$ bits.

Motivated by questions in theoretical distributed computing, we develop the combinatorial theory of abstract simplex path subdivisions. Our main application is a short and structural proof of the theorem of Castaneda and Rajsbaum. This theorem in turn implies the solvability of the weak symmetry breaking task in the immediate snapshot wait-free model in the case when the number of processes is not a power of a prime number.

Given a finite group G, the bipartite divisor graph for its conjugacy class sizes is the bipartite graph with bipartition consisting of the set of conjugacy class sizes of G-Z (where Z denotes the centre of G) and the set of prime numbers that divide these conjugacy class sizes, and with {p,n} being an edge if gcd(p,n)\neq 1.
In this paper we construct infinitely many groups whose bipartite divisor graph for their conjugacy class sizes is the complete bipartite graph K_{2,5}, giving a solution to a question of Taeri.
Lattice polytopes, finite abelian subgroups in $\SL(n,\C)$ and coding theory
We consider $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes $Δ$ with $h^*$-polynomial $h^*_Δ=1+h_k^*t^k$ for $1<k<(d+1)/2$ and relate them to some abelian subgroups of $\SL_{d+1}(\C)$ of order $1+h_k^*=p^r$ where $p$ is a prime number. These subgroups can be investigate by means of coding theory as special linear constant weight codes in $\F_p^{d+1}$. If $p =2$, then the classication of these codes and corresponding lattice polytopes can be obtained using a theorem of Bonisoli. If $p > 2$, the main technical tool in the classification of these linear codes is the non-vanishing theorem for generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_{1,χ}^{(r)}$ associated with odd characters $χ:\F_q^*\to\C^*$ where $q=p^r$. Our result implies a complete classification of all lattice polytopes whose $h^*$-polynomial is a binomial.

We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.

In SIAM Review 10, page 273, D. W. Matula described a bijection between N and the set of topological rooted trees; the number is called the Matula number of the rooted tree. The Gutman-Ivic-Matula (GIM) function g(n) computes the number of edges of the unique tree with Matula number n. Since there is a prefix-free code for the set of prime numbers such that the codelength of each prime p is 2g(p), we show how some properties of the GIM function can be obtained trivially from coding theorems.

It is well-known that translation schemes on prime number of vertices are exactly the cyclotomic schemes. In this current paper, we show that there are no nonsymmetric primitive translation schemes on prime square vertices with at most four classes. On the other hand, we find new non-symmetric four- and five-class association schemes from cyclotomy as fission schemes of certain symmetric three-class schemes. Moreover, we provide an affirmative answer to the following question raised by Song \cite{song_2}: Are there any other two-class primitive schemes that admit symmetrizable fission schemes besides the cyclotomic scheme of index 2 for $q \equiv5 \pmod{8}$? To be more specific, we show that a certain two-class primitive scheme in the finite field $\F_{37^3}$ constructed by Feng and Xiang in \cite{fx} admits a four-class fission scheme. This fission scheme is realized as a fusion scheme of the cyclotomic scheme of index 28.

The well-known middle levels problem is to find a Hammiltonian cycle in the graph induced from the binary Hamming graph $\cH_2(2k+1)$ by the words of weight $k$ or $k+1$. In this paper we define the $q$-analog of the middle levels problem. Let $n=2k+1$ and let $q$ be a power of a prime number. Consider the set of $(k+1)$-dimensional subspaces and the set of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $\F_q^n$. Can these subspaces be ordered in a way that for any two adjacent subspaces $X$ and $Y$, either $X \subset Y$ or $Y \subset X$? A construction method which yields many Hamiltonian cycles for any given $q$ and $k=2$ is presented.

Let $p_{1}<p_2<... <p_ν<...$ be the sequence of prime numbers and let $m$ be a positive integer. We give a strong asymptotic formula for the distribution of the set of integers having prime factorizations of the form $p_{m^{k_1}}p_{m^{k_{2}}...p_{m^{k_{n}}}$ with $k_{1}\le k_{2}\le...\le k_{n}$. Such integers originate in various combinatorial counting problems; when $m=2$, they arise as Matula numbers of certain rooted trees.
Minimal zero-sum sequences of length four over finite cyclic groups II

Let $G$ be a finite cyclic group. Every sequence $S$ over $G$ can be written in the form $S=(n_1g)\cdot\ldots\cdot(n_lg)$ where $g\in G$ and $n_1, \ldots, n_l\in[1, \ord(g)]$, and the index $\ind(S)$ of $S$ is defined to be the minimum of $(n_1+\cdots+n_l)/\ord(g)$ over all possible $g\in G$ such that $\langle g \rangle =G$. An open problem on the index of length four sequences asks whether or not every minimal zero-sum sequence of length 4 over a finite cyclic group $G$ with $\gcd(|G|, 6)=1$ has index 1. In this paper, we show that if $G=\langle g\rangle$ is a cyclic group with order of a product of two prime powers and $\gcd(|G|, 6)=1$, then every minimal zero-sum sequence $S$ of the form $S=(g)(n_2g)(n_3g)(n_4g)$ has index 1. In particular, our result confirms that the above problem has an affirmative answer when the order of $G$ is a product of two different prime numbers or a prime power, extending a recent result by the first author, Plyley, Yuan and Zeng.

Let $A\subset\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $ be a set of prime numbers containing no non-trivial arithmetic progressions. Suppose that $A$ has relative density $α=|A|/π(N)$, where $π(N)$ denotes the number of primes in the set $\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $. By modifying Helfgott and De Roton's work, we improve their bound and show that $$α\ll\frac{\left(\log\log\log N\right)^{6}}{\log\log N}.$$

Let p be a prime number and G a finite group of order divisible by p. Quillen showed that the Brown poset of nonidentity p-subgroups of G is homotopy equivalent to its subposet of nonidentity elementary abelian subgroups. We show here that a similar statement holds for the fusion category of nonidentity p-subgroups of G. Other categories of p-subgroups of G are also considered.
Ramsey theory for p-quasicyclic groups with a view towards topological dynamics
We prove additive and multiplicative partition theorems, obtaining combinatorial results for p-quasicyclic groups, where p is a prime number. We also get density results for p-quasicyclic groups via left Følner sequences of non-empty finite subsets of it, giving a sufficient condition in order a subset of a p-quasicyclic group to contain arbitrary long arithmetic progressions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a dynamical system over p-quasicyclic groups extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrent results for the p-quasicyclic groups. In particular, we prove recurrent results analogous to Furstenberg-Weiss type theorems for classical systems.
Betti tables of $p$-Borel-fixed ideals

In this note we provide a counter-example to a conjecture of K. Pardue [Thesis, Brandeis University, 1994.], which asserts that if a monomial ideal is $p$-Borel-fixed, then its $\naturals$-graded Betti table, after passing to any field does not depend on the field. More precisely, we show that, for any monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ over the ring $\ints$ of integers and for any prime number $p$, there is a $p$-Borel-fixed monomial $S$-ideal $J$ such that a region of the multigraded Betti table of $J(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the multigraded Betti table of $I(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ for all fields $\ell$ of arbitrary characteristic. There is no analogous statement for Borel-fixed ideals in characteristic zero.
Additionally, the construction also shows that there are $p$-Borel-fixed ideals with non-cellular minimal resolutions.
