q-Catalan bases and their dual coefficients
We define q-Catalan bases which are a generalization of the q-polynomials z^n(z,q)_n. The determination of their dual bases involves some q-power series termed dual coefficients. We show how these dual coefficients occur in the solution of some equations with q-commuting coefficients and solve an abstract q-Segner recursion. We study the connection between this theory and Garsia's (1981). The overall flavor of this work is to show how some properties of q-Catalan numbers are in fact instances of much more general results on dual coefficients.

We give an excess theorem for spherical 2-designs. This theorem is a dual version of the spectral excess theorem for graphs, which gives a characterization of distance-regular graphs, among regular graphs in terms of the eigenvalues and the excess. Here we give a characterization of Q-polynomial association schemes among spherical 2-designs.

In the recent works of Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg, Bump-Nakasuji, and others, the product in the Casselman-Shalika formula is written as a sum over a crystal. The coefficient of each crystal element is defined using the data coming from the whole crystal graph structure. In this paper, we adopt the tableaux model for the crystal and obtain the same coefficients using data from each individual tableaux; i.e., we do not need to look at the graph structure. We also show how to combine our results with tensor products of crystals to obtain the sum of coefficients for a given weight. The sum is a q-polynomial which exhibits many interesting properties. We use examples to illustrate these properties.
Bipartite Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs and uniform posets
Let $\G$ denote a bipartite distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \ge 3$. Fix $x \in X$ and let $L$ (resp. $R$) denote the corresponding lowering (resp. raising) matrix. We show that each $Q$-polynomial structure for $\G$ yields a certain linear dependency among $RL^2$, $LRL$, $L^2R$, $L$. Define a partial order $\le$ on $X$ as follows. For $y,z \in X$ let $y \le z$ whenever $\partial(x,y)+\partial(y,z)=\partial(x,z)$, where $\partial$ denotes path-length distance. We determine whether the above linear dependency gives this poset a uniform or strongly uniform structure. We show that except for one special case a uniform structure is attained, and except for three special cases a strongly uniform structure is attained.

Suzuki (1998) showed that an imprimitive Q-polynomial association scheme with first multiplicity at least three is either Q-bipartite, Q-antipodal, or with four or six classes. The exceptional case with four classes has recently been ruled out by Cerzo and Suzuki (2009). In this paper, we show the nonexistence of the last case with six classes. Hence Suzuki's theorem now exactly mirrors its well-known counterpart for imprimitive distance-regular graphs.

Let Gamma be a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set X, diameter D geq 3 and adjacency matrix A. Fix x in X and let A*=A*(x) be the corresponding dual adjacency matrix. Recall that the Terwilliger algebra T=T(x) is the subalgebra of Mat_X(C) generated by A and A*. Let W denote a thin irreducible T-module. It is known that the action of A and A* on W induces a linear algebraic object known as a Leonard pair. Over the past decade, many results have been obtained concerning Leonard pairs. In this paper, these results will be applied to obtain a detailed description of W. In particular, we give a description of W in terms of its intersection numbers, dual intersection numbers and parameter array. Finally, we apply our results to the case in which Gamma has q-Racah type or classical parameters.
A characterization of Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs
We obtain the following characterization of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs. Let $\G$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $d\ge 3$. Let $E$ denote a minimal idempotent of $\G$ which is not the trivial idempotent $E_0$. Let $\{θ_i^*\}_{i=0}^d$ denote the dual eigenvalue sequence for $E$. We show that $E$ is $Q$-polynomial if and only if (i) the entry-wise product $E \circ E$ is a linear combination of $E_0$, $E$, and at most one other minimal idempotent of $\G$; (ii) there exists a complex scalar $β$ such that $θ^*_{i-1}-βθ^*_i + θ^*_{i+1}$ is independent of $i$ for $1 \le i \le d-1$; (iii) $θ^*_i \ne θ^*_0$ for $1 \le i \le d$.
Hall-Littlewood Polynomials, Alcove Walks, and Fillings of Young Diagrams

A recent breakthrough in the theory of (type A) Macdonald polynomials is due to Haglund, Haiman and Loehr, who exhibited a combinatorial formula for these polynomials in terms of a pair of statistics on fillings of Young diagrams. The inversion statistic, which is the more intricate one, suffices for specializing a closely related formula to one for the type A Hall-Littlewood Q-polynomials (spherical functions on p-adic groups). An apparently unrelated development, at the level of arbitrary finite root systems, led to Schwer's formula (rephrased and rederived by Ram) for the Hall-Littlewood P-polynomials of arbitrary type. The latter formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, which originate in the work of Gaussent-Littelmann and of the author with Postnikov on discrete counterparts to the Littelmann path model. In this paper, we relate the above developments, by deriving a Haglund-Haiman-Loehr type formula for the Hall-Littlewood P-polynomials of type A from Ram's version of Schwer's formula via a "compression" procedure.
On antipodal spherical t-designs of degree s with $t\geq 2s-3$
We prove that if X is a spherical t-design and s-distance set with $t\geq 2s-3$, then X has the structure of Q-polynomial association scheme of class s. Also, we describe the parameters of the association scheme.
Some matrices associated with the split decomposition for a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph

We consider a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph $Γ$ with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \geq 3$. For $μ, ν\in \lbrace \downarrow, \uparrow \rbrace$ we define a direct sum decomposition of the standard module $V=\C X$, called the $(μ,ν)$--split decomposition. For this decomposition we compute the complex conjugate and transpose of the associated primitive idempotents. Now fix $b,β\in \mathbb C$ such that $b \neq 1$ and assume $Γ$ has classical parameters $(D,b,α,β)$ with $α= b-1$. Under this assumption Ito and Terwilliger displayed an action of the $q$-tetrahedron algebra $\boxtimes_q$ on the standard module of $Γ$. To describe this action they defined eight matrices in
$\hbox{Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$, called \begin{eqnarray*} \label{eq:list} A,\quad A^*,\quad B,\quad B^*, \quad K,\quad K^*,\quad Φ,\quad Ψ. \end{eqnarray*}
For each matrix in the above list we compute the transpose and complex conjugate. Using this information we compute the transpose and complex conjugate for each generator of $\boxtimes_q$ on $V$.

We give a new proof of Milne's formulas for the number of representations of an integer as a sum of 4m^2 and 4m(m+1) squares. The proof is based on explicit evaluation of pfaffians with elliptic function entries, and relates Milne's formulas to Schur Q-polynomials and to correlation functions for continuous dual Hahn polynomials. We also state a new formula for 2m^2 squares.

We study Schur Q-polynomials evaluated on a geometric progression, or equivalently q-enumeration of marked shifted tableaux, seeking explicit formulas that remain regular at q=1. We obtain several such expressions as multiple basic hypergeometric series, and as determinants and pfaffians of continuous q-ultraspherical or continuous q-Jacobi polynomials. As special cases, we obtain simple closed formulas for staircase-type partitions.

Let $Y$ denote a $D$-class symmetric association scheme with $D \geq 3$, and suppose $Y$ is almost-bipartite P- and Q-polynomial. Let $x$ denote a vertex of $Y$ and let $T=T(x)$ denote the corresponding Terwilliger algebra. We prove that any irreducible $T$-module $W$ is both thin and dual thin in the sense of Terwilliger. We produce two bases for $W$ and describe the action of $T$ on these bases. We prove that the isomorphism class of $W$ as a $T$-module is determined by two parameters, the dual endpoint and diameter of $W$. We find a recurrence which gives the multiplicities with which the irreducible $T$-modules occur in the standard module. We compute this multiplicity for those irreducible $T$-modules which have diameter at least $D-3$.
A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas

We present an elementary method for proving enumeration formulas which are polynomials in certain parameters if others are fixed and factorize into distinct linear factors over Z. Roughly speaking the idea is to prove such formulas by ``explaining'' their zeros using an appropriate combinatorial extension of the objects under consideration to negative integer parameters. We apply this method to prove a new refinement of the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture, which easily implies the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture itself. This is probably the most elementary way to prove this result currently known. Furthermore we adapt our method to q-polynomials, which allows us to derive generating function results as well. Finally we use this method to give another proof for the enumeration of semistandard tableaux of a fixed shape, which is opposed to the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture refinement a multivariate application of our method.

We provide further boson-fermion q-polynomial identities for the `finitised' Virasoro characters χ^{p, p'}_{r,s} of the Forrester-Baxter minimal models M(p, p'), for certain values of r and s. The construction is based on a detailed analysis of the combinatorics of the set P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) of q-weighted, length-L Forrester-Baxter paths, whose generating function χ^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) provides a finitisation of χ^{p, p'}_{r,s}. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the case where the startpoint a and endpoint b of each path both belong to the set of Takahashi lengths. In the limit L -> infinity, these polynomial identities reduce to q-series identities for the corresponding characters.

Let Y denote a symmetric association scheme which is Q-polynomial with respect to an ordering E_0,...,E_D of the primitive idempotents. Bannai and Ito conjectured that the associated sequence of multiplicities m_0,...,m_D is unimodal. We prove that if Y is dual-thin in the sense of Terwilliger, then the sequence of multiplicities satisfies m_i <= m_{i+1} and m_i <= m_{D-i} for i < D/2.

We give closed-form formulas for the fundamental classes of degeneracy loci associated with vector bundle maps given locally by (not necessary square) matrices which are symmetric (resp. skew-symmetric) w.r.t. the main diagonal. Our description uses essentially Schur Q-polynomials of a bundle, and is based on a certain push-forward formula for these polynomials in a Grassmann bundle.

We study combinatorial aspects of q-weighted, length-L Forrester-Baxter paths, P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L), where p, p', a, b, c \in Z_{+}, 0 < p < p', 0 < a, b, c < p', c = b \pm 1, L+a-b \equiv 0 (mod 2), and p and p' are co-prime.
We obtain a bijection between P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) and partitions with certain prescribed hook differences. Thereby, we obtain a new description of the q-weights of P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L).
Using the new weights, and defining s_0 and r_0 to be the smallest non-negative integers for which |p s_0 - p' r_0|=1, we restrict the discussion to P^{p, p'}_{s_0} \equiv P^{p, p'}_{s_0,s_0,s_0+1}(L), and introduce two combinatorial transforms:
1. A Bailey-type transform B:
P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) -> P^{p, p'+p}_{s_0 + r_0}(L'), L \leq L',
2. A duality-type transform D:
P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) -> P^{p'-p, p'}_{s_0}(L).
We study the action of B and D, as q-polynomial transforms on the P^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) generating functions, χ^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L). In the limit L -> \infinity, χ^{p, p'}_{s_0}(L) reduces to the Virasoro characters, χ^{p, p'}_{r_0, s_0}, of minimal conformal field theories M^{p, p'}, or equivalently, to the one-point functions of regime-III Forrester-Baxter models.
As an application of the B and D transforms, we re-derive the constant-sign expressions for χ^{p, p'}_{r_0, s_0}, first derived by Berkovich and McCoy.
