A q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 18, 1-25 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted (column insertion) algorithm which is closely connected to q-Whittaker functions (or Macdonald polynomials with t=0) and reduces to the usual Robinson-Schensted algorithm when q=0. The q-insertion algorithm is `randomised', or `quantum', in the sense that when inserting a positive integer into a tableau, the output is a distribution of weights on a particular set of tableaux which includes the output which would have been obtained via the usual column insertion algorithm. There is also a notion of recording tableau in this setting. We show that the distribution of weights of the pair of tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word or permutation takes a particularly simple form and is closely related to q-Whittaker functions. In the case $0\le q<1$, the q-insertion algorithm applied to a random word also provides a new framework for solving the q-TASEP interacting particle system introduced (in the language of q-bosons) by Sasamoto and Wadati (1998) and yields formulas which are equivalent to some of those recently obtained by Borodin and Corwin (2011) via a stochastic evolution on discrete Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns (or semistandard tableaux) which is coupled to the q-TASEP process. We show that the sequence of P-tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word defines another, quite different, evolution on semistandard tableaux which is also coupled to the q-TASEP process.

Sparse long blocks and the variance of the longest common subsequences in random words
Consider two independent random strings having same length and taking values uniformly in a common finite alphabet. We study the order of the variance of the length of the longest common subsequences (LCS) of these strings when long blocks, or other types of atypical substrings, are sparsely added into one of them. Under weak conditions on the derivative of the mean LCS-curve, the order of the variance of the LCS is shown to be linear in the length of the strings. We also argue that our proofs carry over to many models used by computational biologists to simulate DNA-sequences. This is the first result where the open question of the order of the fluctuation of the LCS of random strings is solved for a realistic model. Until now, this type of result had only been established for low entropy cases.

Generalized Galois numbers, inversions, lattice paths, Ferrers diagrams and limit theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bliem and Kousidis (arXiv:1109.4624) recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.

On the Limiting Shape of Young Diagrams Associated With Markov Random Words
Let $(X_n)_{n \ge 0}$ be an irreducible, aperiodic, homogeneous Markov chain, with state space a totally ordered finite alphabet of size $m$. Using combinatorial constructions and weak invariance principles, we obtain the limiting shape of the associated RSK Young diagrams as a multidimensional Brownian functional. Since the length of the top row of the Young diagrams is also the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequences of $(X_k)_{1\le k \le n}$, the corresponding limiting law follows. We relate our results to a conjecture of Kuperberg by providing, under a cyclic condition, a spectral characterization of the Markov transition matrix precisely characterizing when the limiting shape is the spectrum of the $m \times m$ traceless GUE. For each $m \ge 4$, this characterization identifies a proper, non-trivial class of cyclic transition matrices producing such a limiting shape. However, for $m=3$, all cyclic Markov chains have such a limiting shape, a fact previously only known for $m=2$. For $m$ arbitrary, we also study reversible Markov chains and obtain a characterization of symmetric Markov chains for which the limiting shape is the spectrum of the traceless GUE. To finish, we explore, in this general setting, connections between various limiting laws and spectra of Gaussian random matrices, focusing in particular on the relationship between the terminal points of the Brownian motions, the diagonal terms of the random matrix, and the scaling of its off-diagonal terms, a scaling we conjecture to be a function of the spectrum of the covariance matrix governing the Brownian motion.

Simultaneous large deviations for the shape of Young diagrams associated with random words
Published in Bernoulli 2015, Vol. 21, No. 3, 1494-1537 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the large deviations of the shape of the random RSK Young diagrams associated with a random word of size $n$ whose letters are independently drawn from an alphabet of size $m=m(n)$. When the letters are drawn uniformly and when both $n$ and $m$ converge together to infinity, $m$ not growing too fast with respect to $n$, the large deviations of the shape of the Young diagrams are shown to be the same as that of the spectrum of the traceless GUE. In the non-uniform case, a control of both highest probabilities will ensure that the length of the top row of the diagram satisfies a large deviation principle. In either case, both speeds and rate functions are identified. To complete our study, non-asymptotic concentration bounds for the length of the top row of the diagrams, that is, for the length of the longest increasing subsequence of the random word are also given for both models.

A probabilistic approach to the asymptotics of the length of the longest alternating subsequence
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 17 (2010), #R168 • Search Publication
Let $LA_{n}(τ)$ be the length of the longest alternating subsequence of a uniform random permutation $τ\in[n]$. Classical probabilistic arguments are used to rederive the asymptotic mean, variance and limiting law of $LA_{n}(τ)$. Our methodology is robust enough to tackle similar problems for finite alphabet random words or even Markovian sequences in which case our results are mainly original. A sketch of how some cases of pattern restricted permutations can also be tackled with probabilistic methods is finally presented.

Closeness to the Diagonal for Longest Common Subsequences in Random Words
The nature of the alignment with gaps corresponding to a longest common subsequence (LCS) of two independent iid random sequences drawn from a finite alphabet is investigated. It is shown that such an optimal alignment typically matches pieces of similar short-length. This is of importance in understanding the structure of optimal alignments of two sequences. Moreover, it is also shown that any property, common to two subsequences, typically holds in most parts of the optimal alignment whenever this same property holds, with high probability, for strings of similar short-length. Our results should, in particular, prove useful for simulations since they imply that the re-scaled two dimensional representation of a LCS gets uniformly close to the diagonal as the length of the sequences grows without bound.

$q$-exchangeability via quasi-invariance
Published in Annals of Probability 2010, Vol. 38, No. 6, 2103-2135 • View PublicationBIB
For positive $q\neq1$, the $q$-exchangeability of an infinite random word is introduced as quasi-invariance under permutations of letters, with a special cocycle which accounts for inversions in the word. This framework allows us to extend the $q$-analog of de Finetti's theorem for binary sequences---see Gnedin and Olshanski [Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009) R78]---to general real-valued sequences. In contrast to the classical case of exchangeability ($q=1$), the order on $\mathbb{R}$ plays a significant role for the $q$-analogs. An explicit construction of ergodic $q$-exchangeable measures involves random shuffling of $\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,...\}$ by iteration of the geometric choice. Connections are established with transient Markov chains on $q$-Pascal pyramids and invariant random flags over the Galois fields.

On the Limiting Shape of Young Tableaux Associated With Inhomogeneous Random Words
The limiting shape of the random Young diagrams associated with an inhomogeneous random word is identified as a multidimensional Brownian functional. This functional is identical in law to the spectrum of a random matrix. The Poissonized word problem is also briefy studied, and the asymptotic behavior of the shape analyzed.

On the Variance of the Optimal Alignments Score for Binary Random Words and an Asymmetric Scoring Function
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the order of the variance of the optimal alignments score of two independent iid binary random words having the same length. The letters are equiprobable, but the scoring function is such that one letter has a larger score than the other. In this setting, we prove that the order of variance is linear in the common length. Optimal alignments constitute a generalization of longest common subsequences, they can be represented as optimal paths in a two-dimensional last passage percolation setting with dependent weights.

Integrals over Grassmannians and Random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In testing the independence of two Gaussian populations, one computes the distribution of the sample canonical correlation coefficients, given that the actual correlation is zero. The "Laplace transform" of this distribution is not only an integral over the Grassmannian of p-dimensional planes in complex n-space, but is also related to a generalized hypergeometric function. Such integrals are solutions of Painlevé-like equations. They also have expansions, related to random words of length l formed with an alphabet of p letters. Given that each letter appears in the word, the maximal length of the disjoint union of p increasing subsequences of the word clearly equals l. But the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences leads to a non-trivial distribution. It is precisely this probability which appears in the expansion above.

This paper, a continuation of math.CO/9909169, connects the analysis of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence of inhomogeneous random words to a Riemann-Hilbert problem and an associated system of integrable PDEs. In particular, we show that the Poissonization of the distribution function of this length can be identified as the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function.

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.

Recently Tracy and Widom conjectured [math.CO/9904042] and Johansson proved [math.CO/9906120] that the expected shape λof the semi-standard tableau produced by a random word in k letters is asymptotically the spectrum of a random traceless k by k GUE matrix. In this article we give two arguments for this fact. In the first argument, we realize the random matrix itself as a quantum random variable on the space of random words, if this space is viewed as a quantum state space. In the second argument, we show that the distribution of λis asymptotically given by the usual local limit theorem, but the resulting Gaussian is disguised by an extra polynomial weight and by reflecting walls. Both arguments more generally apply to an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation V of an arbitrary simple Lie algebra g. In the original question, V is the defining representation of g = su(k).

Discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles and the Plancherel measure
Published in Ann. of Math. (2) 153 (2001), no. 2, 259--296 • View PublicationBIB
We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified directed first-passage percolation model. We use the Charlier ensemble to investigate the asymptotics of weakly increasing subsequences in random words and to prove a conjecture of Tracy and Widom. As a limit of the Meixner ensemble or the Charlier ensemble we obtain the Plancherel measure on partitions, and using this we prove a conjecture of Baik, Deift and Johansson that under the Plancherel measure, the distribution of the lengths of the first k rows in the partition, appropriately scaled, converges to the asymptotic joint distribution for the k largest eigenvalues of a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In this problem a certain discrete kernel, which we call the discrete Bessel kernel, plays an important role.

On the Distributions of the Lengths of the Longest Monotone Subsequences in Random Words
Published in Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 119 (2001), 350-380 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.
