Inverse limits of various posets
It is known when we call a poset P, a $\mathcal{P}$-chain permutational poset, given a subset of permutations $\mathcal{P}$ of the symmetric group $S_{n}$. In this work, we use the same idea to study subsets of words of length $n$, that are not necessarily permutations, for example: especially when they are certain classes of restricted growth functions induced by set partitions in standard form over $[n]=\{1,2\cdots n\}$. Varying $n$ only, and also varying $n$ and $k$ (the number of blocks of the set partitions) simultaneously, we can show that those posets form a projective system of trees and lattices (after giving a lattice structure in a natural way). These poset structures can be extended over signed restricted growth functions for standard type B set partitions over $\langle n\rangle=\{-1,-2,\cdots n,0,1,2\cdots n\}$ as well. We investigate properties of the tree and lattice structures of these projective systems. In this scenario we further bring up some other posets like $\mathcal{P}$-Partition posets of snake graph of continued fractions, Ascent lattices on Dyck Paths, certain type of lattice induced by generalisec fibonnaci number and Stanley order, lattices induced by non-crossing set partitions.
Restricted Fubini Rankings and Restricted Unit Interval Parking Functions
We study three natural types of restrictions on Fubini rankings and unit interval parking functions, which are motivated by their correspondence with ordered set partitions. For each restriction type, we define the corresponding subset of Fubini rankings and unit interval parking functions, establish enumerative results, and provide bijections between the restricted families. We also obtain exponential generating functions and combinatorial interpretations, including connections with exceedances in permutations and with the absence of cyclical adjacencies in set partitions.
Lucky Cars in Fubini Rankings and Unit Fubini Rankings
We study lucky cars in subsets of parking functions, called Fubini rankings and unit Fubini rankings. A Fubini ranking is a sequence of nonnegative integers that encodes a valid ranking of competitors, where ties are allowed. A car (or competitor) is said to be lucky if it is the first instance of that rank appearing in the sequence. We present combinatorial characterizations and enumeration formulas for lucky cars in both Fubini rankings and unit Fubini rankings, and establish connections between these objects and ordered set partitions, as well as integer compositions. To obtain our results, we use several techniques to enumerate statistics over these families of objects.
In particular, we employ generating functions, bijective and combinatorial arguments, recurrence relations, and Zeilberger's creative telescoping method.
Higher Order r-Dowling polynomials
Given an ordered set partition, when one insert a number of bars in-between the blocks of the ordered set partition the result is a barred preferential arrangement.
In this study, using the notion of barred preferential arrangements we propose a combinatorial interpretation of a type of generalized Bell polynomials. We also define a new higher order generalization of the $r$-Dowling polynomials. We discuss its degenerate and non degenerate versions. Using the notion of barred preferential arrangements we provide a combinatorial interpretation of these higher order $r$-Dowling polynomials. Furthermore, we prove several combinatorial identities on these polynomials. We also provide some integral representations of these polynomials, and provide some of their asymptotic results. We also show several closed form expressions demonstrating how these higher order $r$-Dowling polynomials may be expressed in terms of Bell polynomials.
The insertion encoding of restricted growth functions
We adapt the vertical and horizontal insertion encodings of Cayley permutations to enumerate restricted growth functions, which are in bijection with unordered set partitions. For both insertion encodings, we fully classify the classes for which these languages are regular. For the horizontal insertion encoding, we also prove that the conditions to be regular are the same for restricted growth functions of matchings.
Sum of elements preceding records in set partitions
In this paper, we aim to derive an explicit formula for the total number of elements preceding records over all set partitions of $[n]$ with exactly $k$ blocks, as well as an asymptotic estimate for the total sum of elements preceding records in all set partitions of $[n]$, expressed in terms of Bell numbers. To achieve this, we analyze the generating function that enumerates set partitions of $[n]$ according to this statistic, which we denote by $\sumelements$.
Cross-intersection theorems for uniform partitions of finite sets
A set partition is $c$-uniform if every block has size $c$. Two families of $c$-uniform partitions of a finite set are said to be cross $t$-intersecting if two partitions from different families share at least $t$ blocks. In this paper, we establish some product-type extremal results for such cross $t$-intersecting families. Our results yield an Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem and a Hilton-Milner theorem for uniform set partitions. Additionally, cross $t$-intersecting families with the maximum sum of their sizes are also characterized.
Cyclic sieving phenomena via combinatorics of continued fractions
We will exhibit several instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon involving statistics and involutions on the following combinatorial families of objects: permutations, set partitions, perfect matchings, D-permutations (and its subclasses). Our results will be based on continued fraction identities enumerating these objects. Our instances of cyclic sieving phenomenon for permutations involve the Corteel involution; this was first studied by Adams, Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker and Welch (arxiv~2024). We will reprove several of their results using our setting of continued fractions; we will also prove two of their conjectures. Our study of set partitions and perfect matchings will involve the Kasraoui-Zeng involution and the Chen-Deng-Du-Stanley-Yan (CDDSY) involution. Finally, for D-permutations, we will construct a new involution which we call the Genocchi-Corteel involution. The common feature of all of these involutions, other than the CDDSY involution, is that they are constructed via bijections to weighted lattice paths, and that they exchange crossings and nestings on their respective objects.
A Poisson Type Operator Deformed by Generalized Fibonacci Numbers and Its Combinatorial Moment Formula
We introduce a two-parameter deformation of the classical Poisson distribution from the viewpoint of noncommutative probability theory, by defining a $(q,t)$-Poisson type operator (random variable) on the $(q,t)$-Fock space \cite{Bl12} (See also \cite{BY06, AY20}). From the analogous viewpoint of the classical Poisson limit theorem in probability theory, we are naturally led to a family of orthogonal polynomials, which we call the $(q,t)$-Charlier polynomials. These generalize the $q$-Charlier polynomials of Saitoh-Yoshida \cite{SY00a, SY00b} and reflect deeper combinatorial symmetries through the additional deformation parameter $t$. A central feature of this paper is the derivation of a combinatorial moment formula of the $(q,t)$-Poisson type operator and the $(q,t)$-Poisson distribution. This is accomplished by means of a card arrangement technique, which encodes set partitions together with crossing and nesting statistics. The resulting expression naturally exhibits a duality between these statistics, arising from a structure rooted in generalized Fibonacci numbers. Our approach provides a concrete framework where methods in combinatorics and theory of orthogonal polynomials are used to investigate the probabilistic properties arising from the $(q,t)$-deformation.
Rook sums in the symmetric group algebra
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the group algebra $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $S_n$ over a commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$. For any two subsets $A$ and $B$ of $[n]$, we define the elements \[ \nabla_{B,A}:=\sum_{\substack{w\in S_n;\\w\left( A\right) =B}} w \qquad \text{and} \qquad \widetilde{\nabla}_{B,A}:=\sum_{\substack{w\in S_n;\\w\left( A\right) \subseteq B}}w \] of $\mathcal{A}$. We study these elements, showing in particular that their minimal polynomials factor into linear factors (with integer coefficients). We express the product $\nabla_{D,C}\nabla_{B,A}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear combination of $\nabla_{U,V}$'s.
More generally, for any two set compositions (i.e., ordered set partitions) $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ of $\left\{ 1,2,\ldots,n\right\} $, we define $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}\in\mathcal{A}$ to be the sum of all permutations $w\in S_n$ that send each block of $\mathbf{A}$ to the corresponding block of $\mathbf{B}$. This generalizes $\nabla_{B,A}$. The factorization property of minimal polynomials does not extend to the $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}$, but we describe the ideal spanned by the $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}$ and a further ideal complementary to it. These two ideals have a "mutually annihilative" relationship, are free as $\mathbf{k}$-modules, and appear as annihilators of tensor product $S_n$-representations; they are also closely related to Murphy's cellular bases, Specht modules, pattern-avoiding permutations and even some algebras appearing in quantum information theory.
Partial Deranged Bell Numbers and Their Combinatorial Properties
We introduce a novel generalization of deranged Bell numbers by defining the partial deranged Bell numbers $w_{n,r}$, which count the number of set partitions of $\left[ n\right] $ with exactly $r$ fixed blocks, while the remaining blocks are deranged. This construction provides a unified framework that connects partial derangements, Stirling numbers, and ordered Bell numbers. We investigate their combinatorial properties, including explicit formulas, generating functions, and recurrence relations. Moreover, we demonstrate that these numbers are expressible in terms of classical sequences such as deranged Bell numbers and ordered Bell numbers, and reveal their relationship to complementary Bell numbers, offering insights relevant to Wilf's conjecture. Notably, we derive the identity \[ \tildeφ_{n}=\Tilde{w}_{n,0}-\Tilde{w}_{n,1}=\tilde{w}_{n-1,0}-2\tilde {w}_{n-1,2}, \] which illustrates their structural connection to complementary Bell numbers. We also introduce a polynomial expansion for these numbers and explore their connections with exponential polynomials, geometric polynomials, and Bernoulli numbers. These relationships facilitate the derivation of closed-form expressions for certain finite summations involving Stirling numbers of the second kind, Bernoulli numbers, and binomial coefficients, articulated through partial derangement numbers.
On Ward Numbers and Increasing Schröder Trees
The Ward numbers $W(n,k)$ combinatorially enumerate set partitions with block sizes $\geq 2$ and phylogenetic trees (total partition trees). We prove that $W(n,k)$ also counts \emph{increasing Schröder trees} by verifying they satisfy Ward's recurrence. We construct a direct type-preserving bijection between total partition trees and increasing Schröder trees, complementing known type-preserving bijections to set partitions (including Chen's decomposition for increasing Schröder trees). Weighted generalizations extend these bijections to enriched increasing Schröder trees trees and Schröder trees trees, yielding new links to labeled rooted trees. Finally, we deduce a functional equation for weighted increasing Schröder trees, whose solution using Chen's decomposition leads to a combinatorial interpretation of a Lagrange inversion variant.
Ordered set partition posets
The lattice of partitions of a set and its d-divisible generalization have been much studied for their combinatorial, topological, and representation-theoretic properties. An ordered set partition is a set partition where the subsets are listed in a specific order. Ordered set partitions appear in combinatorics, number theory, permutation polytopes, and the study of coinvariant algebras. The ordered set partitions of {1,\ldots,n} can be partially ordered by refinement and then a unique minimal element attached, resulting in a lattice Omega_n. This lattice has appeared while studying other combinatorial objects, but not as the central focus. The purpose of this paper is to provide the first comprehensive look at Omega_n. In particular, we show that it admits a recursive atom ordering, and study the action of the symmetric group S_n on associated homology groups, looking in particular at the multiplicity of the trivial representation. We also consider the related posets where every block has size either divisible by some fixed d at least 2 or congruent to 1 modulo d. Open problems and avenues for future research are scattered throughout.
Eulerian-type polynomials over Stirling permutations and box sorting algorithm
It is well known that ascents, descents and plateaux are equidistributed over the set of classical Stirling permutations. Their common enumerative polynomials are the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which have been extensively studied by many researchers. This paper is divided into three parts. The first parts gives a convolution formula for the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which simplifies a result of Gessel. As an application, a determinantal expression for the second-order Eulerian polynomials is obtained. We then investigate the convolution formula of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials. Among other things, by introducing three new statistics: proper ascent-plateau, improper ascent-plateau and trace, we discover that a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over a class of restricted Stirling permutations equals a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over signed permutations. By special parametrizations, we make use of Stirling permutations to give a unified interpretations of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials of types $A$ and $B$. The third part presents a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with grammars, we provide three interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials.
Odd-indexed Fibonacci numbers via pattern-avoiding permutations
In this paper, we consider several combinatorial problems whose enumeration leads to the odd-indexed Fibonacci numbers, including certain types of Dyck paths, block fountains, directed column-convex polyominoes, and set partitions with no crossings and no nestings. Our goal is to provide bijective maps to pattern-avoiding permutations and derive generating functions that track certain positional statistics at the permutation level.
Positive $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions and their Kreweras maps
We study positive $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions and their positive Kreweras maps. In classical types, we describe their combinatorial realisations as certain non-crossing set partitions. We also realise these positive Kreweras maps as pseudo-rotations on a circle, respectively on an annulus. We enumerate positive $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions in classical types that are invariant under powers of the positive Kreweras maps with respect to several parameters. In order to cope with the exceptional types, we develop a different combinatorial model in general type describing positive $m$-divisible non-crossing partitions that are invariant under powers of the positive Kreweras maps. We finally show that altogether these results establish several cyclic sieving phenomena.
A proof of the Fields Conjectures
The {\em superspace ring} of rank $n$ is the algebra $Ω_n$ of differential forms on affine $n$-space. The algebra $Ω_n$ is bigraded with respect to polynomial and exterior degree and carries a natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Modding out by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term yields the {\em superspace coinvariant ring} $SR_n$. We prove that, as an ungraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module, the space $SR_n$ is isomorphic to the sign-twisted permutation action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on ordered set partitions of $\{1,\dots,n\}$. We refine this result by calculating the bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphism type of $SR_n$. This proves the Fields Conjectures of N. Bergeron, L. Colmenarejo, S.-X. Li, J. Machacek, R. Sulzgruber, and M. Zabrocki as well as a related conjecture of V. Reiner.
Efficient computation of complementary set partitions, with applications to an extension and estimation of generalized cumulants
This paper develops new combinatorial approaches to analyze and compute special set partitions, called complementary set partitions, which are fundamental in the study of generalized cumulants. Moving away from traditional graph-based and algebraic methods, a simple and fast algorithm is proposed to list complementary set partitions based on two-block partitions, making the computation more accessible and implementable also in non-symbolic programming languages like R. Computational comparisons in Maple demonstrate the efficiency of the proposal. Additionally the notion of generalized cumulant is extended using multiset subdivisions and multi-index partitions to include scenarios with repeated variables and to address more sophisticated dependence structures. A formula is provided that expresses generalized multivariate cumulants as linear combinations of multivariate cumulants, weighted by coefficients that admit a natural combinatorial interpretation. Finally, the introduction of dummy variables and specialized multi-index partitions enables an efficient procedure for estimating generalized multivariate cumulants with a substantial reduction in data power sums involved.
On Bell numbers of type $D$
In this paper, we will introduce Bell numbers $D(n)$ of type $D$ as an analogue to the classical Bell numbers related to all the partitions of the set $[n]$. Then based on a signed set partition of type $D$, we will construct the recurrence relations of Bell numbers $D(n)$. In addition, we deduce the exponential generating function for $D(n)$. Finally, we will provide an explicit formula for $D(n)$.
Counting k-ary words by number of adjacency differences of a prescribed size
Recently, the general problem of enumerating permutations $π=π_1\cdots π_n$ such that $π_{i+r}-π_i \neq s$ for all $1\leq i\leq n-r$, where $r$ and $s$ are fixed, was considered by Spahn and Zeilberger. In this paper, we consider an analogous problem on $k$-ary words involving the distribution of the corresponding statistic. Note that for $k$-ary words, it suffices to consider only the $r=1$ case of the aforementioned problem on permutations. Here, we compute for arbitrary $s$ an explicit formula for the ordinary generating function for $n \geq 0$ of the distribution of the statistic on $k$-ary words $ρ=ρ_1\cdotsρ_n$ recording the number of indices $i$ such that $ρ_{i+1}-ρ_i=s$. This result may then be used to find a comparable formula for finite set partitions with a fixed number of blocks, represented sequentially as restricted growth functions. Further, several sequences from the OEIS arise as enumerators of certain classes of $k$-ary words avoiding adjacencies with a prescribed difference. The comparable problem where one tracks indices $i$ such that the absolute difference $|a_{i+1}-a_i|$ is a fixed number is also considered on $k$-ary words and the corresponding generating function may be expressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. Finally, combinatorial proofs are found for several related recurrences and formulas for the total number of adjacencies of the form $a(a+s)$ on the various structures.
