Tutte's dichromate for signed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the ``trivariate Tutte polynomial" of a signed graph as an invariant of signed graphs up to vertex switching that contains among its evaluations the number of proper colorings and the number of nowhere-zero flows. In this, it parallels the Tutte polynomial of a graph, which contains the chromatic polynomial and flow polynomial as specializations. The number of nowhere-zero tensions (for signed graphs they are not simply related to proper colorings as they are for graphs) is given in terms of evaluations of the trivariate Tutte polynomial at two distinct points. Interestingly, the bivariate dichromatic polynomial of a biased graph, shown by Zaslavsky to share many similar properties with the Tutte polynomial of a graph, does not in general yield the number of nowhere-zero flows of a signed graph. Therefore the ``dichromate" for signed graphs (our trivariate Tutte polynomial) differs from the dichromatic polynomial (the rank-size generating function). The trivariate Tutte polynomial of a signed graph can be extended to an invariant of ordered pairs of matroids on a common ground set -- for a signed graph, the cycle matroid of its underlying graph and its frame matroid form the relevant pair of matroids. This invariant is the canonically defined Tutte polynomial of matroid pairs on a common ground set in the sense of a recent paper of Krajewski, Moffatt and Tanasa, and was first studied by Welsh and Kayibi as a four-variable linking polynomial of a matroid pair on a common ground set.

Schubert polynomials as projections of Minkowski sums of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations. For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform projects to the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$. Such a construction has been sought after at least since the construction of twisted cubes by Grossberg and Karshon in 1994, whose integer point transforms project to Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ for all $w \in S_n$. However, twisted cubes are not honest polytopes; rather one can think of them as signed polytopal complexes. Our polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a convex polytope. We also show that $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a Minkowski sum of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes of varying sizes. When the permutation $w$ is Grassmannian, the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is recovered. We conclude by showing that the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is a flow polytope.

Signed partitions - A balls into urns approach
Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of type B of the second kind, we provide a 'balls into urns' approach for proving a generalization of a well-known identity concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind: $x^n=\sum\limits_{k=0}^n{S(n,k)[x]_k}.$

Enumerative combinatorics on determinants and signed bigrassmannian polynomials
Published in Math. J. Okayama Univ. 57 (2015), 159--172 • Search Publication
As an application of linear algebra for enumerative combinatorics, we introduce two new ideas, signed bigrassmannian polynomials and bigrassmannian determinant. First, a signed bigrassmannian polynomial is a variant of the statistic given by the number of bigrassmannian permutations below a permutation in Bruhat order as Reading suggested (2002) and afterward the author developed (2011). Second, bigrassmannian determinant is a $q$-analog of the determinant with respect to our statistic. It plays a key role for a determinantal expression of those polynomials. We further show that bigrassmannian determinant satisfies weighted condensation as a generalization of Dodgson, Jacobi-Desnanot and Robbins-Rumsey (1986).

On the achromatic number of signed graphs
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, Elsevier, 2019 • Search Publication
In this paper, we generalize the concept of complete coloring and achromatic number to 2-edge-colored graphs and signed graphs. We give some useful relationships between different possible definitions of such achromatic numbers and prove that computing any of them is NP-complete.

On the number of pancake stacks requiring four flips to be sorted
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018 (November 4, 2019) dmtcs:5214 • View PublicationBIB
Using existing classification results for the 7- and 8-cycles in the pancake graph, we determine the number of permutations that require 4 pancake flips (prefix reversals) to be sorted. A similar characterization of the 8-cycles in the burnt pancake graph, due to the authors, is used to derive a formula for the number of signed permutations requiring 4 (burnt) pancake flips to be sorted. We furthermore provide an analogous characterization of the 9-cycles in the burnt pancake graph. Finally we present numerical evidence that polynomial formulae exist giving the number of signed permutations that require $k$ flips to be sorted, with $5\leq k\leq9$.

On the eigenvalues of some signed graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph and $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of $G$. The matrix $S(G) = J -I -2A(G)$ is called the Seidel matrix of $G$, where $I$ is an identity matrix and $J$ is a square matrix all of whose entries are equal to 1. Clearly, if $G$ is a graph of order $n$ with no isolated vertex, then the Seidel matrix of $G$ is also the adjacency matrix of a signed complete graph $K_n$ whose negative edges induce $G$. In this paper, we study the Seidel eigenvalues of the complete multipartite graph $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ and investigate its Seidel characteristic polynomial. We show that if there are at least three parts of size $n_i$, for some $i=1,\ldots,k$, then $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ is determined, up to switching, by its Seidel spectrum.

Characteristic polynomials and zeta functions of equitably partitioned graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 588, 1 March 2020, Pages 471-488 • View PublicationBIB
Let $π=\{V_1,\dots,V_r\}$ be an equitable partition of the vertex set of a directed graph (digraph) $X$. It is well known that the characteristic polynomial $φ(X/π,x)$ of a quotient graph $X/π$ divides that of $X$, but the remainder part is not well investigated. In this paper, we define a deletion graph $X\backslashπ$ over an equitable partition $π$, which is a signed directed graph defined for a fixed set of deleting vertices $\{\bar{v}_i\in V_i, i=1,\cdots,r\}$, and give a similarity transformation exchanging the adjacency matrix $A(X)$ which is compatible with the equitable partition for a block triangular matrix whose diagonal blocks are the adjacency matrix of the quotient graph and the deletion graph. In fact, we show the result for more general matrices including adjacency matrix of graphs, and as corollaries, we show the followings: (i) a decomposition formula of the reciprocal of the Ihara-Bartholdi zeta function over an equitably partitioned undirected graph into the quotient graph part and the deletion graph part, and (ii) Chen and Chen's result ([CC17, Theorem 3.1]) on the Ihara-Bartholdi zeta functions on generalized join graphs, and (iii) Teranishi's result [Ter03, Theorem 3.3].

Signed magic rectangles with two filled cells in each column
A signed magic rectangle $SMR(m,n;r, s)$ is an $m \times n$ array with entries from $X$, where $X=\{0,\pm1,\pm2,\ldots, $ $\pm (ms-1)/2\}$ if $mr$ is odd and $X = \{\pm1,\pm2,\ldots,\pm mr/2\}$ if $mr$ is even, such that precisely $r$ cells in every row and $s$ cells in every column are filled, every integer from set $X$ appears exactly once in the array and the sum of each row and of each column is zero. In this paper we prove that a signed magic rectangle $SMR(m,n;r, 2)$ exists if and only if either $m=2$ and $n=r\equiv 0,3 \pmod 4$ or $m,r\geq 3$ and $mr=2n$.

Martingales and descent statistics
This paper develops techniques to study the number of descents in random permutations via martingales. We relax an assumption in the Berry-Esseen theorem of Bolthausen (1982) to extend the theorem's scope to martingale differences of time-dependent variances. This extension leads to a new proof of the fact that the number of descents in random permutations is asymptotically normal with an error bound of order $1/\sqrt{n}.$ The same techniques are shown to be applicable to other descent and descent-related statistics as they satisfy certain recurrence relation conditions. These statistics include inversions, descents in signed permutations, descents in Stirling permutations, the length of the longest alternating subsequences, descents in matchings and two-sided Eulerian numbers.

The energy of random signed graph
A signed graph $Γ(G)$ is a graph with a sign attached to each of its edges, where $G$ is the underlying graph of $Γ(G)$. The energy of a signed graph $Γ(G)$ is the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(Γ(G))$ of $Γ(G)$. The random signed graph model $\mathcal{G}_n(p, q)$ is defined as follows: Let $p, q \ge 0$ be fixed, $0 \le p+q \le 1$. Given a set of $n$ vertices, between each pair of distinct vertices there is either a positive edge with probability $p$ or a negative edge with probability $q$, or else there is no edge with probability $1-(p+ q)$. The edges between different pairs of vertices are chosen independently. In this paper, we obtain an exact estimate of energy for almost all signed graphs. Furthermore, we establish lower and upper bounds to the energy of random multipartite signed graphs.

Around the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2019 • Search Publication
We find a combinatorial interpretation of Shareshian and Wachs' $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials, which leads to an alternative proof of their $q$-$γ$-positivity using group actions. Motivated by the sign-balance identity of Désarménien--Foata--Loday for the $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{inv})$-Eulerian polynomials, we further investigate the sign-balance of the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We show the unimodality of the resulting signed binomial-Eulerian polynomials by exploiting their continued fraction expansion and making use of a new quadratic recursion for the $q$-binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We finally use the method of continued fractions to derive a new $(p,q)$-extension of the $γ$-positivity of binomial-Eulerian polynomials which involves crossings and nestings of permutations.

Signed Chromatic Polynomials of Signed Book Graphs
In 2015, Matthias Beck and his team developed a computer program in SAGE which efficiently determines the number of signed proper $k$-colorings for a given signed graph. In this article, we determine the number of different signatures on Book graph up to switching isomorphisms. We also find a recursive formula of the signed chromatic polynomials of signed Book graphs.

Signed Complete Graphs on Six Vertices
Published in Advances Appl. Discrete Math. Vol. 24 (2) (2020), 129-142 • Search Publication
A signed graph is a graph whose edges are labeled positive or negative. The sign of a cycle is the product of the signs of its edges. Zaslavsky proved in 2012 that, up to switching isomorphism, there are six different signed Petersen graphs. It is also known that, up to switching isomorphism, there are two signed $K_3$'s, three signed $K_4$'s, and seven signed $K_5$'s. In this paper, we prove that there are sixteen signed $K_6$'s upto switching ismomorphism.

Derandomizing compressed sensing with combinatorial design
Compressed sensing is the art of reconstructing structured $n$-dimensional vectors from substantially fewer measurements than naively anticipated. A plethora of analytic reconstruction guarantees support this credo. The strongest among them are based on deep results from large-dimensional probability theory that require a considerable amount of randomness in the measurement design. Here, we demonstrate that derandomization techniques allow for considerably reducing the amount of randomness that is required for such proof strategies. More, precisely we establish uniform s-sparse reconstruction guarantees for $C s \log (n)$ measurements that are chosen independently from strength-four orthogonal arrays and maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases, respectively. These are highly structured families of $\tilde{C} n^2$ vectors that imitate signed Bernoulli and standard Gaussian vectors in a (partially) derandomized fashion.

On the ordinary and signed Göllnitz--Gordon partitions
Published in Southeast Asian Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences 6 (2008) 63--68 • Search Publication
Dedicated to George E. Andrews on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Submitted to a special issue for this occasion. We use Andrews' notion of a `signed partition' (i.e. partition where some parts are allowed to be negative) to interpret the Göllnitz--Gordon sum, and then provide a bijective map between these signed partitions and the usual Göllnitz--Gordon partitions (partitions with difference at least two between parts, and no consecutive even parts).

Colouring of generalized signed planar graphs
Assume $G$ is a graph. We view $G$ as a symmetric digraph, in which each edge $uv$ of $G$ is replaced by a pair of opposite arcs $e=(u,v)$ and $e^{-1}=(v,u)$. Assume $S$ is an inverse closed subset of permutations of positive integers. We say $G$ is $S$-$k$-colourable if for any mapping $σ: E(G) \to S$ with $σ(x,y) = (σ(y,x))^{-1}$, there is a mapping $f: V(G) \to [k]=\{1,2, \ldots, k\}$ such that for each arc $e=(x,y)$, $σ_e(f(x)) \ne f(y)$. The concept of $S$-$k$-colouring is a common generalization of many colouring concepts, including $k$-colouring, signed $k$-colouring defined by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera, signed $k$-colouring defined by Kang and Steffen, correspondence $k$-colouring defined by Dvořák and Postle, and group colouring defined by Jaeger, Linial, Payan and Tarsi. We are interested in the problem as for which subset $S$ of $S_4$, every planar graph is $S$-colourable. Such a subset $S$ is called good. The famous four colour theorem is equivalent to say that $S=\{id\}$ is good. There are two conjectures on signed graph colouring, one is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)(34)\}$ be good and the other is equivalent to $S=\{id, (12)\}$ be good. We say two subsets $S$ and $S'$ of $S_k$ are conjugate if there is a permutation $π\in S_k$ such that $S'= \{πσπ^{-1}: σ\in S\}$. This paper proves that if $S$ is a good subset of $S_4$ containing $id$, then $S$ is conjugate to a subset of $\{id, (12), (34), (12)(34)\}$. However, it remains an open problem if there is any good subset $S$ which contains $id$ and has cardinality $|S| \ge 2$. We also prove that $S=\{(12),(13),(23),(123),(132)\}$ is not good.

A refinement of choosability of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assume $k$ is a positive integer, $λ=\{k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k$ and $G$ is a graph. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\cup_{v\in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $q$ subsets $C_1 \cup C_2 \ldots \cup C_q$ and for each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if for each $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, $G$ is $L$-colourable. It follows from the definition that if $λ=\{k\}$, then $λ$-choosable is the same as $k$-choosable, if $λ=\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$, then $λ$-choosable is equivalent to $k$-colourable. For the other partitions of $k$ sandwiched between $\{k\}$ and $\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$ in terms of refinements, $λ$-choosability reveals a complex hierarchy of colourability of graphs. We prove that for two partitions $λ, λ'$ of $k$, every $λ$-choosable graph is $λ'$-choosable if and only if $λ'$ is a refinement of $λ$. Then we concentrate on $λ$-choosability of planar graphs for partitions $λ$ of $4$. Several conjectures concerning colouring of generalized signed planar graphs are proposed and relations between these conjectures and list colouring conjectures for planar graphs are explored. In particular, it is proved that a conjecture of Kündgen and Ramamurthi on list colouring of planar graphs is implied by the conjecture that every planar graph is $\{2,2\}$-choosable, and also implied by the conjecture of Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera which asserts that every planar graph is signed MRS-$4$-colourable, and that a conjecture of Kang and Steffen asserting that every planar graph is signed KS-$4$-colourable implies that every planar graph is $\{1,1,2\}$-choosable.

Triangular Ladders $P_{d,2}$ are $e$-positive
In 1995 Stanley conjectured that the chromatic symmetric functions of the graphs $P_{d,2}$, which we call triangular ladders, were $e$-positive. In this paper we confirm this conjecture, which is also an unsolved case of the celebrated $(3+1)$-free conjecture. Our method is to follow the generalization of the chromatic symmetric functions by Gebhard and Sagan to symmetric functions in non-commuting variables. These functions satisfy a deletion-contraction property unlike the chromatic symmetric function in commuting variables. We do this by proving a new signed combinatorial formula for \emph{all} unit interval graphs on the basis of elementary symmetric functions. Then we prove $e$-positivity for triangular ladders by very carefully defining a sign-reversing involution on our signed combinatorial formula. This leaves us with certain positive terms and further allows us to expand on an already-known family of $e$-positive graphs by Gebhard and Sagan.

Homomorphism bounds of signed bipartite $K_4$-minor-free graphs and edge-colorings of $2k$-regular $K_4$-minor-free multigraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 261:40-51, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
A signed graph $(G, Σ)$ is a graph $G$ and a subset $Σ$ of its edges which corresponds to an assignment of signs to the edges: edges in $Σ$ are negative while edges not in $Σ$ are positive. A closed walk of a signed graph is balanced if the product of the signs of its edges (repetitions included) is positive, and unbalanced otherwise. The unbalanced-girth of a signed graph is the length of a shortest unbalanced closed walk (if such a walk exists). A homomorphism of $(G,Σ)$ to $(H,Π)$ is a homomorphism of $G$ to $H$ which preserves the balance of closed walks. In this work, given a signed bipartite graph $(B, Π)$ of unbalanced-girth $2k$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(B, Π)$ to admit a homomorphism from any signed bipartite graph of unbalanced-girth at least $2k$ whose underlying graph is $K_4$-minor-free. The condition can be checked in polynomial time with respect to the order of $B$. Let $SPC(2k)$ be the signed bipartite graph on vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_2^{2k-1}$ where vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent with a positive edge if their difference is in $\{e_1,e_2, \ldots, e_{2k-1}\}$ (where the $e_i$'s form the standard basis), and adjacent with a negative edge if their difference is $J$ (that is, the all-1 vector). As an application of our work, we prove that every signed bipartite $K_4$-minor-free graph of unbalanced-girth $2k$ admits a homomorphism to $SPC(2k)$. This supports a conjecture of Guenin claiming that every signed bipartite planar graph of unbalanced-girth $2k$ admits a homomorphism to $SPC(2k)$ (this would be an extension of the four-color theorem). We also give an application of our work to edge-coloring $2k$-regular $K_4$-minor-free multigraphs.
