An inequality of Kostka numbers and Galois groups of Schubert problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, this follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, an easy combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use that these Kostka numbers appear in tensor product decompositions of sl_2(C)-modules. Interpreting the tensor product as the action of certain commuting Toeplitz matrices and using a spectral analysis and Fourier series rewrites the inequality as the positivity of an integral. We establish the inequality by estimating this integral.

Positivity of Toeplitz determinants formed by rising factorial series and properties of related polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we prove positivity of Maclaurin coefficients of polynomials written in terms of rising factorials and arbitrary log-concave sequences. These polynomials arise naturally when studying log-concavity of rising factorial series. We propose several conjectures concerning zeros and coefficients of a generalized form of those polynomials. We also consider polynomials whose generating functions are higher order Toeplitz determinants formed by rising factorial series. We make three conjectures about these polynomials. All proposed conjectures are supported by numerical evidence.
Arithmetic Self-Similarity of Infinite Sequences
We define the arithmetic self-similarity (AS) of a one-sided infinite sequence sigma to be the set of arithmetic progressions through sigma which are a vertical shift of sigma. We study the AS of several famlies of sequences, viz. completely additive sequences, Toeplitz words and Keane's generalized Morse sequences. We give a complete characterization of the AS of completely additive sequences, and classify the set of single-gap Toeplitz patterns that yield completely additive Toeplitz words. We show that every arithmetic subsequence of a Toeplitz word generated by a one-gap pattern is again a Toeplitz word. Finally, we establish that generalized Morse sequences are specific sum-of-digits sequences, and show that their first difference is a Toeplitz word.

Crystal Frameworks, Matrix-valued Functions and Rigidity Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
An introduction and survey is given of some recent work on the infinitesimal dynamics of \textit{crystal frameworks}, that is, of translationally periodic discrete bond-node structures in $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $ d=2,3,...$. We discuss the rigidity matrix, a fundamental object from finite bar-joint framework theory, rigidity operators, matrix-function representations and low energy phonons. These phonons in material crystals, such as quartz and zeolites, are known as rigid unit modes, or RUMs, and are associated with the relative motions of rigid units, such as ~SiO$_4$ tetrahedra in the tetrahedral polyhedral bond-node model for quartz. We also introduce semi-infinite crystal frameworks, bi-crystal frameworks and associated multi-variable Toeplitz operators.

Block Companion Singer Cycles, Primitive Recursive Vector Sequences, and Coprime Polynomial Pairs over Finite Fields
Published in Finite Fields Appl. 17 (2011), no. 5, 461-472 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a conjecture concerning the enumeration of nonsingular matrices over a finite field that are block companion and whose order is the maximum possible in the corresponding general linear group. A special case is proved using some recent results on the probability that a pair of polynomials with coefficients in a finite field is coprime. Connection with an older problem of Niederreiter about the number of splitting subspaces of a given dimension are outlined and an asymptotic version of the conjectural formula is established. Some applications to the enumeration of nonsingular Toeplitz matrices of a given size over a finite field are also discussed.

Riordan arrays and the LDU decomposition of symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine a result of Basor and Ehrhardt concerning Hankel and Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices, within the context of the Riordan group of lower-triangular matrices. This allows us to determine the LDU decomposition of certain symmetric Toeplitz plus Hankel matrices. We also determine the generating functions and Hankel transforms of associated sequences.

Trivariate monomial complete intersections and plane partitions

We consider the homogeneous components U_r of the map on R = k[x,y,z]/(x^A, y^B, z^C) that multiplies by x + y + z. We prove a relationship between the Smith normal forms of submatrices of an arbitrary Toeplitz matrix using Schur polynomials, and use this to give a relationship between Smith normal form entries of U_r. We also give a bijective proof of an identity proven by J. Li and F. Zanello equating the determinant of the middle homogeneous component U_r when (A, B, C) = (a + b, a + c, b + c) to the number of plane partitions in an a by b by c box. Finally, we prove that, for certain vector subspaces of R, similar identities hold relating determinants to symmetry classes of plane partitions, in particular classes 3, 6, and 8.

The N-queens Problem on a symmetric Toeplitz matrix
Published in Discrete Math. 309 (2009), no. 4, 969--974 • Search Publication
We consider the problem of placing $n$ nonattacking queens on a symmetric $n \times n$ Toeplitz matrix. As in the $N$-queens Problem on a chessboard, two queens may attack each other if they share a row or a column in the matrix. However, the usual diagonal restriction is replaced by specifying that queens may attack other queens that occupy squares with the same number value in the matrix. We will show that $n$ nonattacking queens can be placed on such a matrix if and only if $n\equiv 0,1 \mod 4$.

Determinants and Compositions of Natural Numbers
We consider a particular type of matrices which belong at the same time to the class of Hessenberg and Toeplitz matrices, and whose determinants are equal to the number of a type of compositions of natural numbers. We prove a formula in which the number of weak compositions with a fixed number of zeroes is expressed in terms of the number of compositions without zeroes. Then we find a relationship between weak compositions and coefficients of characteristic polynomials of appropriate matrices. Finally, we prove three explicit formulas for weak compositions of a special kind.

On possible growth of Toeplitz languages
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a new family of factorial languages whose subword complexity grows as $Θ(n^α)$, where $α$ is the root of some transcendent equation. Analytical methods and in particular, a corollary of the Wiener-Pitt theorem, are used to find the asymptotic growth of the complexity. Factorial languages considered are languages of arithmetical factors of some Toeplitz words. So, we describe a new family of words with an unusual growth of arithmetical complexity.

Infinite log-concavity: developments and conjectures
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 44 (1) (2010), 1-15 • View PublicationBIB
Given a sequence (a_k) = a_0, a_1, a_2,... of real numbers, define a new sequence L(a_k) = (b_k) where b_k = a_k^2 - a_{k-1} a_{k+1}. So (a_k) is log-concave if and only if (b_k) is a nonnegative sequence. Call (a_k) "infinitely log-concave" if L^i(a_k) is nonnegative for all i >= 1. Boros and Moll conjectured that the rows of Pascal's triangle are infinitely log-concave. Using a computer and a stronger version of log-concavity, we prove their conjecture for the nth row for all n <= 1450. We also use our methods to give a simple proof of a recent result of Uminsky and Yeats about regions of infinite log-concavity. We investigate related questions about the columns of Pascal's triangle, q-analogues, symmetric functions, real-rooted polynomials, and Toeplitz matrices. In addition, we offer several conjectures.

Superregular Matrices and the Construction of Convolutional Codes having a Maximum Distance Profile
Superregular matrices are a class of lower triangular Toeplitz matrices that arise in the context of constructing convolutional codes having a maximum distance profile. These matrices are characterized by the property that no submatrix has a zero determinant unless it is trivially zero due to the lower triangular structure. In this paper, we discuss how superregular matrices may be used to construct codes having a maximum distance profile. We also introduce group actions that preserve the superregularity property and present an upper bound on the minimum size a finite field must have in order that a superregular matrix of a given size can exist over that field.

On an identity due to ((Bump and Diaconis) and (Tracy and Widom))
Published in Canadian Math. Bulletin 54 (2011) no. 2, 255-269 • View PublicationBIB
A classical question for a Toeplitz matrix with given symbol is to compute asymptotics for the determinants of its reductions to finite rank. One can also consider how those asymptotics are affected when shifting an initial set of rows and columns (or, equivalently, asymptotics of their minors). Bump and Diaconis (Toeplitz minors, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 97 (2002), pp. 252--271) obtained a formula for such shifts involving Laguerre polynomials and sums over symmetric groups. They also showed how the Heine identity extends for such minors, which makes this question relevant to Random Matrix Theory. Independently, Tracy and Widom (On the limit of some Toeplitz-like determinants, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 23 (2002), pp. 1194--1196) used the Wiener-Hopf factorization to express those shifts in terms of products of infinite matrices. We show directly why those two expressions are equal and uncover some structure in both formulas that was unknown to their authors. We introduce a mysterious differential operator on symmetric functions that is very similar to vertex operators. We show that the Bump-Diaconis-Tracy- Widom identity is a differentiated version of the classical Jacobi-Trudi identity.

On a conjecture of Widom

We prove a conjecture of H.Widom stated in [W] (math/0108008) about the reality of eigenvalues of certain infinite matrices arising in asymptotic analysis of large Toeplitz determinants. As a byproduct we obtain a new proof of A.Okounkov's formula for the (determinantal) correlation functions of the Schur measures on partitions.

Polynomial recurrences and cyclic resultants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let $f \in K[x]$. The $m$-th {\it cyclic resultant} of $f$ is \[r_m = \text{Res}(f,x^m-1).\] A generic monic polynomial is determined by its full sequence of cyclic resultants; however, the known techniques proving this result give no effective computational bounds. We prove that a generic monic polynomial of degree $d$ is determined by its first $2^{d+1}$ cyclic resultants and that a generic monic reciprocal polynomial of even degree $d$ is determined by its first $2\cdot 3^{d/2}$ of them. In addition, we show that cyclic resultants satisfy a polynomial recurrence of length $d+1$. This result gives evidence supporting the conjecture of Sturmfels and Zworski that $d+1$ resultants determine $f$. In the process, we establish two general results of independent interest: we show that certain Toeplitz determinants are sufficient to determine whether a sequence is linearly recurrent, and we give conditions under which a linearly recurrent sequence satisfies a polynomial recurrence of shorter length.

Spectral measure of large random Hankel, Markov and Toeplitz matrices
Published in Annals of Probability 2006, Vol. 34, No. 1, 1-38 • View PublicationBIB
We study the limiting spectral measure of large symmetric random matrices of linear algebraic structure. For Hankel and Toeplitz matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_k\}$ of unit variance, and for symmetric Markov matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_{ij}\}_{j>i}$ of zero mean and unit variance, scaling the eigenvalues by $\sqrt{n}$ we prove the almost sure, weak convergence of the spectral measures to universal, nonrandom, symmetric distributions $γ_H$, $γ_M$ and $γ_T$ of unbounded support. The moments of $γ_H$ and $γ_T$ are the sum of volumes of solids related to Eulerian numbers, whereas $γ_M$ has a bounded smooth density given by the free convolution of the semicircle and normal densities. For symmetric Markov matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_{ij}\}_{j>i}$ of mean $m$ and finite variance, scaling the eigenvalues by ${n}$ we prove the almost sure, weak convergence of the spectral measures to the atomic measure at $-m$. If $m=0$, and the fourth moment is finite, we prove that the spectral norm of $\mathbf {M}_n$ scaled by $\sqrt{2n\log n}$ converges almost surely to 1.

On operators on polynomials preserving real-rootedness and the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 20 (2004), no. 2, 119--130 • Search Publication
We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.

Cumulants in Noncommutative Probability Theory III. Creation- and annihilation operators on Fock spaces
Published in Infin. Dimens. Anal. Quantum Probab. Relat. Top. 8 (2005), no. 3, 407-437 • View PublicationBIB
Fock space constructions give rise to natural exchangeable families and are thus well suited for cumulant calculations. In this paper we develop some general formulas and compute cumulants for generalized Toeplitz operators, notably for q-Fock spaces, previously considered by M. Anshelevich and A. Nica, and Fock spaces for characters of the infinite symmetric group, which where constructed by Bozejko and Guta. An expression for cumulants in terms of the cycle-cover polynomials of certain directed graphs is obtained in this case.

Recursion relations for Unitary integrals, Combinatorics and the Toeplitz Lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Toeplitz determinants (of increasing size) associated with the symbols $exp{t(z+z^{-1})}$ or $(1-ξ{z})^α (1-ξ{z^{-1}})^β$ satisfy recursion relations, thus expressing all the Toeplitz determinants as a rational function of the first few determinants. A. Borodin found these relations using Riemann-Hilbert methods. The nature of Borodin's relations pointed towards the Toeplitz lattice and its Virasoro algebra, as developed by the authors. In this paper, we take the Toeplitz and Virasoro approach for a fairly large class of symbols, leading to a systematic and simple way of generating such recursion relations. The latter are very naturally expressed in terms of the $L$-matrices appearing in the Lax pair for the Toeplitz lattice equations. As a surprise, we find, compared to Borodin's, a different set of relations, except for the 3-step relations associated with the symbol $ e^{t(z+z^{-1})}$. Moreover, these recursion relations define an invariant manifold for the Toeplitz lattice. This leads to a "discrete Painlevé property" (singularity confinement) for the rational recursion relations, as a consequence of the classical ``continuous Painlevé property" for the Toeplitz lattice.
