Equivariant K-theory and tangent spaces to Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tangent spaces to Schubert varieties of type A were characterized by Lakshmibai and Seshadri. This result was extended to the other classical types by Lakshmibai. We give a uniform characterization of tangent spaces to Schubert varieties in cominuscule G/P. Our results extend beyond cominuscule G/P; they describe the tangent space to any Schubert variety in G/B at a point xB, where x is a cominuscule Weyl group element in the sense of Peterson. Our results also give partial information about the tangent space to any Schubert variety at any point. Our method is to describe the tangent spaces of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, and then recover results for Schubert varieties. Our proof uses a relationship between weights of the tangent space of a variety with torus action, and factors of the class of the variety in torus equivariant K-theory. The proof relies on a formula for Schubert classes in equivariant K-theory due to Graham and Willems, as well as a theorem on subword complexes due to Knutson and Miller.

Toric spaces and face enumeration on simplicial manifolds
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few interesting results in toric topology.

Orbit spaces of equivariantly formal torus actions of complexity one
Published in Orbit Spaces of Equivariantly Formal Torus Actions of Complexity One. Transformation Groups 30, 19-52 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Let a compact torus $T=T^{n-1}$ act on an orientable smooth compact manifold $X=X^{2n}$ effectively, with nonempty finite set of fixed points, and suppose that stabilizers of all points are connected. If $H^{odd}(X)=0$ and the weights of tangent representation at each fixed point are in general position, we prove that the orbit space $Q=X/T$ is a homology $(n+1)$-sphere. If, in addition, $π_1(X)=0$, then $Q$ is homeomorphic to $S^{n+1}$. We introduce the notion of $j$-generality of tangent weights of torus action. For any action of $T^k$ on $X^{2n}$ with isolated fixed points and $H^{odd}(X)=0$, we prove that $j$-generality of weights implies $(j+1)$-acyclicity of the orbit space $Q$. This statement generalizes several known results for actions of complexity zero and one. In complexity one, we give a criterion of equivariant formality in terms of the orbit space. In this case, we give a formula expressing Betti numbers of a manifold in terms of certain combinatorial structure that sits in the orbit space.

The universal covers of hypertoric varieties and Bogomolov's decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the (singular) universal cover of an affine hypertoric variety. We show that it is given by another affine hypertoric variety, and taking the universal cover corresponds to taking the simplification of the associated hyperplane arrangement. Also, we describe the fundamental group of the regular locus of an affine hypertoric variety in general. In the latter part, we show that the hamiltonian torus action is block indecomposable if and only if $\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant symplectic structures on the associated hypertoric variety are unique up to scalar. In particular, we establish the analogue of Bogomolov's decomposition for hypertoric varieties, which is proposed by Namikawa for general conical symplectic varieties. As a byproduct, we show that if two affine (or smooth) hypertoric varieties are $\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant isomorphic as varieties, then they are also the hamiltonian torus action equivariant isomorphic as symplectic varieties. This implies that the combinatorial classification actually gives the classification of these varieties up to $\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant isomorphisms.

Torus actions of complexity one in non-general position
Published in Osaka J. Math. 58:4 (2021), 839-853 • Search Publication
Let the compact torus $T^{n-1}$ act on a smooth compact manifold $X^{2n}$ effectively with nonempty finite set of fixed points. We pose the question: what can be said about the orbit space $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ if the action is cohomologically equivariantly formal (which essentially means that $H^{odd}(X^{2n};\mathbb{Z})=0$). It happens that homology of the orbit space can be arbitrary in degrees $3$ and higher. For any finite simplicial complex $L$ we construct an equivariantly formal manifold $X^{2n}$ such that $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^3L$. The constructed manifold $X^{2n}$ is the total space of the projective line bundle over the permutohedral variety hence the action on $X^{2n}$ is Hamiltonian and cohomologically equivariantly formal. We introduce the notion of the action in $j$-general position and prove that, for any simplicial complex $M$, there exists an equivariantly formal action of complexity one in $j$-general position such that its orbit space is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^{j+2}M$.

Lickorish type construction of manifolds over simple polytopes
Published in "Algebraic topology and related topics", Proceedings of the 7th East Asian Conference on Algebraic Topology, (Eds. M. Singh, Y. Song, J. Wu), Trends Math., Birkhauser/Springer, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a survey on the Lickorish type construction of some kind of closed manifolds over simple convex polytopes. Inspired by Lickorish's theorem, we propose a method to describe certain families of manifolds over simple convex polytopes with torus action. Under this construction, many classical classification results of these families of manifolds could be interpreted by this construction and some further problems will be discussed.

The smooth torus orbit closures in the Grassmannians
It is known that for the natural algebraic torus actions on the Grassmannians, the closures of torus orbits are toric varieties, and that these toric varieties are smooth if and only if the corresponding matroid polytopes are simple. We prove that simple matroid polytopes are products of simplices and smooth torus orbit closures in the Grassmannians are products of complex projective spaces. Moreover, it turns out that the smooth torus orbit closures are uniquely determined by the corresponding simple matroid polytopes.

Manifolds of isospectral arrow matrices
Published in Sbornik: Mathematics 212:5 (2021), 3-36 • Search Publication
An arrow matrix is a matrix with zeroes outside the main diagonal, first row, and first column. We consider the space $M_{St_n,λ}$ of Hermitian arrow $(n+1)\times (n+1)$-matrices with fixed simple spectrum $λ$. We prove that this space is a smooth $2n$-manifold, and its smooth structure is independent on the spectrum. Next, this manifold carries the locally standard torus action: we describe the topology and combinatorics of its orbit space. If $n\geqslant 3$, the orbit space $M_{St_n,λ}/T^n$ is not a polytope, hence this manifold is not quasitoric. However, there is a natural permutation action on $M_{St_n,λ}$ which induces the combined action of a semidirect product $T^n\rtimesΣ_n$. The orbit space of this large action is a simple polytope. The structure of this polytope is described in the paper. In case $n=3$, the space $M_{St_3,λ}/T^3$ is a solid torus with boundary subdivided into hexagons in a regular way. This description allows to compute the cohomology ring and equivariant cohomology ring of the 6-dimensional manifold $M_{St_3,λ}$ using the general theory developed by the first author. This theory is also applied to a certain $6$-dimensional manifold called the twin of $M_{St_3,λ}$. The twin carries a half-dimensional torus action and has nontrivial tangent and normal bundles.

K-orbit closures and Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties
Published in Pacific J. Math. 320 (2022) 103-132 • View PublicationBIB
We define the Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties. We show they are isomorphic to the smooth varieties defined in [D.~Barbasch-S.~Evens '94] that map generically finitely to symmetric orbit closures, thereby giving resolutions of singularities in certain cases. Our definition parallels [P.~Magyar '98]'s construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties [H.~C.~Hansen '73, M.~Demazure '74]. From this alternative viewpoint, one deduces a graphical description in type $A$, stratification into closed subvarieties of the same kind, and determination of the torus-fixed points. Moreover, we explain how these manifolds inherit a natural symplectic structure with Hamiltonian torus action. We then express the moment polytope in terms of the moment polytope of a Bott-Samelson variety.

On Incidence Algebras and their Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a unified approach, via deformations of incidence algebras, to several important types of representations with finiteness conditions, as well as the combinatorial algebras which produce them. We show that over finite dimensional algebras, representations with finitely many orbits, or finitely many invariant subspaces, or distributive coincide, and further coincide with thin modules in the acyclic case. Incidence algebras produce examples of such modules, and we show that algebras which are locally hereditary, and whose projective are distributive, or equivalently, which have finitely many ideals, are precisely the deformations of incidence algebras, and they are the finite dimensional algebra analogue of Pr${\rm \ddot{u}}$fer rings. New characterizations of incidence algebras are obtained, such as they are exactly algebras which have a faithful thin module. A main consequence is that "every thin module comes from an incidence algebra": if $V$ is either a thin module over a finite dimensional algebra $A$, or $V$ is distributive and $A$ is acyclic, then $A/{\rm ann}(V)$ is an incidence algebra and $V$ can be presented as its defining representation. We classify thin/distributive modules, and respectively deformations, of incidence algebras in terms of first and second cohomology of the simplicial realization of the poset. As a main application we obtain a complete classification of thin modules over any finite dimensional algebra. Their moduli spaces are multilinear varieties, and we show that any multilinear variety can be obtained in this way. A few other applications, to Grothendieck rings of combinatorial algebras, to graphs and their incidence matrices, to linear algebra (tori actions on matrices), and to a positive answer to the "no-gap conjecture" of Ringel and Bongartz, in the distributive case, are given. Other results in the literature are re-derived.

Cominuscule points and Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a cominuscule point in a Schubert variety in a generalized flag variety for a semisimple group. We derive formulas expressing the Hilbert series and multiplicity of a Schubert variety at a cominuscule point in terms of the restrictions of classes in torus-equivariant K-theory and cohomology to that point, generalizing previously known formulas for flag varieties of cominuscule type. Thus, we can calculate Hilbert series and multiplicities in cases where these were previously unknown. The formulas for Schubert varieties are special cases of more general formulas valid at generalized cominuscule points of schemes with torus actions.

The algorithm combines computational techniques from commutative algebra, convex geometry and group theory. We have implemented our algorithm in the Singular library gitfan.lib. Using our implementation, we compute the Mori chamber decomposition of the cone of movable divisors of $\bar{M}_{0,6}$.

Polynomial Assignments for Bott-Samelson manifolds
Polynomial assignments for a torus $T$-action on a smooth manifold $M$ were introduced by Ginzburg, Guillemin, and Karshon in 1999; they form a module over $\mathbb{S}(\mathfrak{t}^*)$, the algebra of polynomial functions on $\mathfrak{t}$, the Lie algebra of $T$. In this paper we describe the assignment module $\mathcal{A}_T(M)$ for a natural $T$-action on a Bott-Samelson manifold $M = BS^I$ and present a method for computing generators.

Upper bounds for the dimension of tori acting on GKM manifolds
Published in Journal of the Mathematical Society of Japan Vol.71, No.2 (2019), 483--513 • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to give an upper bound for the dimension of a torus $T$ which acts on a GKM manifold $M$ effectively. In order to do that, we introduce a free abelian group of finite rank, denoted by $\mathcal{A}(Γ,α,\nabla)$, from an (abstract) $(m,n)$-type GKM graph $(Γ,α,\nabla)$. Here, an $(m,n)$-type GKM graph is the GKM graph induced from a $2m$-dimensional GKM manifold $M^{2m}$ with an effective $n$-dimensional torus $T^{n}$-action, say $(M^{2m},T^{n})$. Then it is shown that $\mathcal{A}(Γ,α,\nabla)$ has rank $\ell(> n)$ if and only if there exists an $(m,\ell)$-type GKM graph $(Γ,\widetildeα,\nabla)$ which is an extension of $(Γ,α,\nabla)$. Using this necessarily and sufficient condition, we prove that the rank of $\mathcal{A}(Γ,α,\nabla)$ for the GKM graph of $(M^{2m},T^{n})$ gives an upper bound for the dimension of a torus which can act on $M^{2m}$ effectively. As an application, we compute the rank of $\mathcal{A}(Γ,α,\nabla)$ of the complex Grassmannian of $2$-planes $G_{2}(\mathbb{C}^{n+2})$ with some effective $T^{n+1}$-action, and prove that the $T^{n+1}$-action on $G_{2}(\mathbb{C}^{n+2})$ is the maximal effective torus action.

Homology cycles in manifolds with locally standard torus actions
Published in Homology, Homotopy Appl. 18:1 (2016), 1-23 • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a $2n$-manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus $T^n$. If the free part of action is trivial and proper faces of the orbit space $Q$ are acyclic, then there are three types of homology classes in $X$: (1) classes of face submanifolds; (2) $k$-dimensional classes of $Q$ swept by actions of subtori of dimensions $<k$; (3) relative $k$-classes of $Q$ modulo $\partial Q$ swept by actions of subtori of dimensions $\geqslant k$. The submodule of $H_*(X)$ spanned by face classes is an ideal in $H_*(X)$ with respect to the intersection product. It is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}[S_Q]/Θ)/W$, where $\mathbb{Z}[S_Q]$ is the face ring of the Buchsbaum simplicial poset $S_Q$ dual to $Q$; $Θ$ is the linear system of parameters determined by the characteristic function; and $W$ is a certain submodule, lying in the socle of $\mathbb{Z}[S_Q]/Θ$. Intersections of homology classes different from face submanifolds are described in terms of intersections on $Q$ and $T^n$.

Locally standard torus actions and h'-vectors of simplicial posets
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan 68:4 (2016), 1-21 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the orbit type filtration on a manifold $X$ with locally standard action of a compact torus and the corresponding homological spectral sequence $(E_X)^r_{*,*}$. If all proper faces of the orbit space $Q=X/T$ are acyclic, and the free part of the action is trivial, this spectral sequence can be described in full. The ranks of diagonal terms are equal to the $h'$-numbers of the Buchsbaum simplicial poset $S_Q$ dual to $Q$. Betti numbers of $X$ depend only on the orbit space $Q$ but not on the characteristic function. If $X$ is a slightly different object, namely the model space $X=(P\times T^n)/\sim$ where $P$ is a cone over Buchsbaum simplicial poset $S$, we prove that $\dim (E_X)^{\infty}_{p,p} = h''_p(S)$. This gives a topological evidence for the fact that $h''$-numbers of Buchsbaum simplicial posets are nonnegative.

Faithful tropicalisation and torus actions
Published in Manuscr. Math. 149(3-4), 315-338 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
For any affine variety equipped with coordinates, there is a surjective, continuous map from its Berkovich space to its tropicalisation. Exploiting torus actions, we develop techniques for finding an explicit, continuous section of this map. In particular, we prove that such a section exists for linear spaces, Grassmannians of planes (reproving a result due to Cueto, Häbich, and Werner), matrix varieties defined by the vanishing of 3 times 3 minors, and for the hypersurface defined by Cayley's hyperdeterminant.

Buchstaber numbers and classical invariants of simplicial complexes
Published in Buchstaber invariant, minimal non-simplices and related topics, Osaka J. Math. 53:2 (2016), 377-395 • Search Publication
Buchstaber invariant is a numerical characteristic of a simplicial complex, arising from torus actions on moment-angle complexes. In the paper we study the relation between Buchstaber invariants and classical invariants of simplicial complexes such as bigraded Betti numbers and chromatic invariants. The following two statements are proved. (1) There exists a simplicial complex U with different real and ordinary Buchstaber invariants. (2) There exist two simplicial complexes with equal bigraded Betti numbers and chromatic numbers, but different Buchstaber invariants. To prove the first theorem we define Buchstaber number as a generalized chromatic invariant. This approach allows to guess the required example. The task then reduces to a finite enumeration of possibilities which was done using GAP computational system. To prove the second statement we use properties of Taylor resolutions of face rings.

Facets of secondary polytopes and Chow stability of toric varieties
Chow stability is one notion of Mumford's Geometric Invariant Theory for studying the moduli space of polarized varieties. Kapranov, Sturmfels and Zelevinsky detected that Chow stability of polarized toric varieties is determined by its inherent {\it secondary polytope}, which is a polytope whose vertices correspond to regular triangulations of the associated polytope \cite{KSZ}. In this paper, we give a purely convex-geometrical proof that the Chow form of a projective toric variety is $H$-semistable if and only if it is $H$-polystable with respect to the standard complex torus action $H$. This \emph{essentially} means that Chow semistability is equivalent to Chow polystability for any (not-necessaliry-smooth) projective toric varieties.

Wedge operations and torus symmetries
Published in Tohoku Math. J. (2), 68(1) (2016), 91--138 • View PublicationBIB
A fundamental result of toric geometry is that there is a bijection between toric varieties and fans. More generally, it is known that some class of manifolds having well-behaved torus actions, called topological toric manifolds $M^{2n}$, can be classified in terms of combinatorial data containing simplicial complexes with $m$ vertices. We remark that topological toric manifolds are a generalization of smooth toric varieties. The number $m-n$ is known as the Picard number when $M^{2n}$ is a {compact smooth} toric variety. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the topological toric manifolds over a simplicial complex $K$ and those over the complex obtained by simplicial wedge operations from $K$. As applications, we do the following. 1. We classify smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3. This is a reproving of a result of Batyrev. 2. We give a new and complete proof of projectivity of smooth toric varieties of Picard number 3 originally proved by Kleinschmidt and Sturmfels. 3. We find a criterion for a toric variety over the join of boundaries of simplices to be projective. When the toric variety is smooth, it is known as a generalized Bott manifold which is always projective. 4. We classify and enumerate real topological toric manifolds when $m-n=3$. 5. When $m-n \leq 3$, any real topological toric manifold is realizable as fixed points of the conjugation of a topological toric manifold.
