Toric topology emerged in the end of the 1990s on the borders of equivariant topology, algebraic and symplectic geometry, combinatorics and commutative algebra. It has quickly grown up into a very active area with many interdisciplinary links and applications, and continues to attract experts from different fields.
The key players in toric topology are moment-angle manifolds, a family of manifolds with torus actions defined in combinatorial terms. Their construction links to combinatorial geometry and algebraic geometry of toric varieties via the related notion of a quasitoric manifold. Discovery of remarkable geometric structures on moment-angle manifolds led to seminal connections with the classical and modern areas of symplectic, Lagrangian and non-Kaehler complex geometry. A related categorical construction of moment-angle complexes and their generalisations, polyhedral products, provides a universal framework for many fundamental constructions of homotopical topology. The study of polyhedral products is now evolving into a separate area of homotopy theory, with strong links to other areas of toric topology. A new perspective on torus action has also contributed to the development of classical areas of algebraic topology, such as complex cobordism.
The book contains lots of open problems and is addressed to experts interested in new ideas linking all the subjects involved, as well as to graduate students and young researchers ready to enter into a beautiful new area.

Consider Kashiwara's crystal associated to a highest weight representation of a symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. There is a geometric realization of this object using Nakajima's quiver varieties, but in many particular cases it can also be realized by elementary combinatorial methods. Here we propose a framework for extracting combinatorial realizations from the geometric picture: We construct certain torus actions on the quiver varieties and use Morse theory to index the irreducible components by connected components of the subvariety of torus fixed points. We then discuss the case of affine sl(n). There the fixed point components are just points, and are naturally indexed by multi-partitions. There is some choice in our construction, leading to a family of combinatorial models for each highest weight crystal. Applying this construction to the crystal of the fundamental representation recovers a family of combinatorial realizations recently constructed by Fayers. This gives a more conceptual proof of Fayers' result as well as a generalization to higher level. We also discuss a relationship with Nakajima's monomial crystal.
Counting Generating Invariants Under Semisimple Group and Torus Actions
Although degree bounds and algorithms for the generators of various invariant rings have been known for decades, little is known about the cardinality of minimal generating sets. Estimates of such would provide lower bounds for the runtime of algorithms that compute invariants. Fix a semisimple linear algebraic group, choose an irreducible representation of highest weight w, and consider the irreducible representations of highest weight nw. As n goes to infinity, the cardinality of a minimal set of generating invariants grows faster than any polynomial in n. On the other hand, combinatorial methods yield sub-exponential upper bounds for the growth of generating sets for torus invariants on the binary forms.

The aim of this paper is to study the representation theory of quantum Schubert cells. Let $\g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. To each element $w$ of the Weyl group $W$ of $\g$, De Concini, Kac and Procesi have attached a subalgebra $U_q[w]$ of the quantised enveloping algebra $U_q(\g)$. Recently, Yakimov showed that these algebras can be interpreted as the quantum Schubert cells on quantum flag manifolds. In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of $U_q[w]$. More precisely, it follows from the Stratification Theorem of Goodearl and Letzter that the primitive spectrum of $U_q[w]$ admits a stratification indexed by those primes that are invariant under a natural torus action. Moreover each stratum is homeomorphic to the spectrum of maximal ideals of a torus. The main result of this paper gives an explicit formula for the dimension of the stratum associated to a given torus-invariant prime.

Let $Δ\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an $n$-dimensional integral Delzant polytope. It is well-known that there exist the $n$-dimensional compact toric manifold $X_Δ$ and the very ample $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$-equivariant line bundle $L_Δ$ on $X_Δ$ associated with $Δ$. In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for Chow semistability of $(X_Δ,L_Δ^i)$ for a maximal torus action. We then see that asymptotic (relative) Chow semistability implies (relative) K-semistability for toric degenerations, which is proved by Ross and Thomas, without any knowledge of Riemann-Roch theorem and test configurations.
Equivariant cohomology for Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic orbifolds

In this paper, we study Hamiltonian R-actions on symplectic orbifolds [M/S], where R and S are tori. We prove an injectivity theorem and generalize Tolman-Weitsman's proof of the GKM theorem in this setting. The main example is the symplectic reduction X//S of a Hamiltonian T-manifold X by a subtorus S of T. This includes the class of symplectic toric orbifolds. We define the equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology ring and use the above results to establish a combinatorial method of computing this equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology in terms of orbifold fixed point data.

In [GT], Goldin and the second author extend some ideas from Schubert calculus to the more general setting of Hamiltonian torus actions on compact symplectic manifolds with isolated fixed points. (See also [Kn99] and [Kn08].) The main goal of this paper is to build on this work by finding more effective formulas. More explicitly, given a generic component of the moment map, they define a canonical class $α_p$ in the equivariant cohomology of the manifold $M$ for each fixed point $p \in M$. When they exist, canonical classes form a natural basis of the equivariant cohomology of $M$. In particular, when $M$ is a flag variety, these classes are the equivariant Schubert classes. It is a long standing problem in combinatorics to find positive integral formulas for the equivariant structure constants associated to this basis. Since computing the restriction of the canonical classes to the fixed points determines these structure constants, it is important to find effective formulas for these restrictions. In this paper, we introduce new techniques for calculating the restrictions of a canonical class $α_p$ to a fixed point $q$. Our formulas are nearly always simpler, in the sense that they count the contributions over fewer paths. Moreover, our formula is manifestly positive and integral in certain important special cases.

The algebra of quantum matrices of a given size supports a rational torus action by automorphisms. It follows from work of Letzter and the first named author that to understand the prime and primitive spectra of this algebra, the first step is to understand the prime ideals that are invariant under the torus action. In this paper, we prove that a family of quantum minors is the set of all quantum minors that belong to a given torus-invariant prime ideal of a quantum matrix algebra if and only if the corresponding family of minors defines a non-empty totally nonnegative cell in the space of totally nonnegative real matrices of the appropriate size. As a corollary, we obtain explicit generating sets of quantum minors for the torus-invariant prime ideals of quantum matrices in the case where the quantisation parameter $q$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{Q}$.

We take a graph theoretic approach to the problem of finding generators for those prime ideals of $\mathcal{O}_q(\mathcal{M}_{m,n}(\mathbb{K}))$ which are invariant under the torus action ($\mathbb{K}^*)^{m+n}$. Launois \cite{launois3} has shown that the generators consist of certain quantum minors of the matrix of canonical generators of $\mathcal{O}_q(\mathcal{M}_{m,n}(\mathbb{K}))$ and in \cite{launois2} gives an algorithm to find them. In this paper we modify a classic result of Lindström \cite{lind} and Gessel-Viennot~\cite{gv} to show that a quantum minor is in the generating set for a particular ideal if and only if we can find a particular set of vertex-disjoint directed paths in an associated directed graph.

For a flag manifold $M=G/B$ with the canonical torus action, the $T-$equivariant cohomology is generated by equivariant Schubert classes, with one class $τ_u$ for every element $u$ of the Weyl group $W$. These classes are determined by their restrictions to the fixed point set $M^T \simeq W$, and the restrictions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients in the simple roots.
The main result of this article is a positive formula for computing $τ_u(v)$ in types A, B, and C. To obtain this formula we identify $G/B$ with a generic co-adjoint orbit and use a result of Goldin and Tolman to compute $τ_u(v)$ in terms of the induced moment map. Our formula, given as a sum of contributions of certain maximal ascending chains from $u$ to $v$, follows from a systematic degeneration of the moment map, corresponding to degenerating the co-adjoint orbit. In type A we prove that our formula is manifestly equivalent to the formula announced by Billey in \cite{Bi}, but in type C, the two formulas are not equivalent.

We develop a new approach to the representation theory of quantum algebras supporting a torus action via methods from the theory of finite-state automata and algebraic combinatorics. We show that for a fixed number $m$, the torus-invariant primitive ideals in $m\times n$ quantum matrices can be seen as a regular language in a natural way. Using this description and a semigroup approach to the set of Cauchon diagrams, a combinatorial object that paramaterizes the primes that are torus-invariant, we show that for $m$ fixed, the number of torus-invariant primitive ideals in $m\times n$ quantum matrices satisfies a linear recurrence in $n$ over the rational numbers. In the $3\times n$ case we give a concrete description of the torus-invariant primitive ideals and use this description to give an explicit formula for the number P(3,n).
Equivariant structure constants for ordinary and weighted projective space
We compute the integral torus-equivariant cohomology ring for weighted projective space for two different torus actions by embedding the cohomology in a sum of polynomial rings $\oplus_{i=0}^n \Z[t_1, t_2,..., t_n]$. One torus action gives a result complementing that of Bahri, Franz, and Ray. For the other torus action, each basis class for weighted projective space is a multiple of the basis class for ordinary projective space; we identify each multiple explicitly. We also give a simple formula for the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology ring of ordinary projective space in terms of the basis of Schubert classes, as a sequence of divided difference operators applied to a specific polynomial.

It has been known that an effective smooth $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-action on a smooth connected closed manifold $M^n$ fixing a finite set can be associated to a $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-colored regular graph. In this paper, we consider abstract graphs $(Γ,α)$ of $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-actions, called abstract 1-skeletons. We study when an abstract 1-skeleton is a colored graph of some $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-action. We also study the existence of faces of an abstract 1-skeleton (note that faces often have certain geometric meanings if an abstract 1-skeleton is a colored graph of some $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-action).

In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of quantum algebras supporting a rational torus action. We first prove a quantum analogue of a Theorem of Dixmier; namely, we show that the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of primitive factors of various quantum algebras is always even. Next we give a combinatorial criterion for a prime ideal that is invariant under the torus action to be primitive. We use this criterion to obtain a formula for the number of primitive ideals in the algebra of $2\times n$ quantum matrices that are invariant under the action of the torus. Roughly speaking, this can be thought of as giving an enumeration of the points that are invariant under the induced action of the torus in the ``variety of $2\times n$ quantum matrices''.

We apply a theorem of Gel'fand, Goresky, MacPherson, and Serganova about matroid polytopes to study semistability of partial flags relative to a T-linearized ample line bundle of a flag space F = SL(n)/P where T is a maximal torus in SL(n) and P is a parabolic subgroup containing T. We find that the semistable points are all detected by invariant sections of degree one regardless of the line bundle or linearization thereof, provided there exists at least one nonzero invariant section of degree one. In this case the degree one sections are sufficient to give a well defined map from the G.I.T. quotient F//T to projective space.
Additionally, we show that the closure of any T-orbit in SL(n)/P is a projectively normal toric variety for any projective embedding of SL(n)/P.

In this survey article we present several new developments of `toric topology' concerning the cohomology of face rings (also known as Stanley-Reisner algebras). We prove that the integral cohomology algebra of the moment-angle complex Z_K (equivalently, of the complement U(K) of the coordinate subspace arrangement) determined by a simplicial complex K is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring of K. Then we analyse Massey products and formality of this algebra by using a generalisation of Hochster's theorem. We also review several related combinatorial results and problems.
A scheme related to the Brauer loop model

We introduce the_Brauer loop scheme_ E := {M in M_N(C) : M\cp M = 0}, where \cp is a certain degeneration of the ordinary matrix product. Its components of top dimension, floor(N^2/2), correspond to involutions πin S_N having one or no fixed points. In the case N even, this scheme contains the upper-upper scheme from [Knutson '04] as a union of (N/2)! of its components. One of those is a degeneration of the_commuting variety_ of pairs of commuting matrices.
The_Brauer loop model_ is a quantum integrable stochastic process introduced in [de Gier--Nienhuis '04], and some of the entries of its Perron-Frobenius eigenvector were observed (conjecturally) to match the degrees of the components of the upper-upper scheme. We extend this, with proof, to_all_ the entries: they are the degrees of the components of the Brauer loop scheme.
Our proof of this follows the program outlined in [Di Francesco--Zinn-Justin '04]. In that paper, the entries of the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector were generalized from numbers to polynomials, which allowed them to be calculated inductively using divided difference operators. We relate these polynomials to the multidegrees of the components of the Brauer loop scheme, defined using an evident torus action on E. In particular, we obtain a formula for the degree of the commuting variety, previously calculated up to 4x4 matrices.

Stanley-Reisner rings and torus actions
We review a class of problems on the borders of topology of torus actions, commutative homological algebra and combinatorial geometry, which is currently being investigated by Victor Buchstaber and the author. The text builds on the lectures delivered on the transformation group courses in Osaka City University and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. We start with discussing several well-known results and problems on combinatorial geometry of polytopes and simplicial complexes, and then move gradually towards investigating the combinatorial structures associated with spaces acted on by the torus. Parallelly, we set up the required commutative algebra apparatus, including Cohen-Macaulay/Gorenstein rings and Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes.
Toric Hyperkahler Varieties

Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanley-Reisner ring of a matroid modulo a linear system of parameters. Familiar applications of toric geometry to combinatorics, including the Hard Lefschetz Theorem and the volume polynomials of Khovanskii-Pukhlikov, are extended to the hyperkahler setting. When the matroid is graphic, our construction gives the toric quiver varieties, in the sense of Nakajima.
