The probability that an operator is nilpotent
Published • View PublicationBIB
Choose a random linear operator on a vector space of finite cardinality N: then the probability that it is nilpotent is 1/N. This is a linear analogue of the fact that for a random self-map of a set of cardinality N, the probability that some iterate is constant is 1/N. The first result is due to Fine, Herstein and Hall, and the second is essentially Cayley's tree formula. We give a new proof of the result on nilpotents, analogous to Joyal's beautiful proof of Cayley's formula. It uses only general linear algebra and avoids calculation entirely.

Transversals of Longest Cycles in Partial $k$-Trees and Chordal Graphs
Let $lct(G)$ be the minimum cardinality of a set of vertices that intersects every longest cycle of a 2-connected graph $G$. We show that $lct(G)\leq k-1$ if $G$ is a partial $k$-tree and that $lct(G)\leq \max \{1, {ω(G){-}3}\}$ if $G$ is chordal, where $ω(G)$ is the cardinality of a maximum clique in $G$. Those results imply that all longest cycles intersect in 2-connected series parallel graphs and in 3-trees.
A Polynomial Time Algorithm for Computing the Strong Rainbow Connection Numbers of Odd Cacti
We consider the problem of computing the strong rainbow connection number $src(G)$ for cactus graphs $G$ in which all cycles have odd length. We present a formula to calculate $src(G)$ for such odd cacti which can be evaluated in linear time, as well as an algorithm for computing the corresponding optimal strong rainbow edge coloring, with polynomial worst case run time complexity. Although computing $src(G)$ is NP-hard in general, previous work has demonstrated that it may be computed in polynomial time for certain classes of graphs, including cycles, trees and block clique graphs. This work extends the class of graphs for which $src(G)$ may be computed in polynomial time.

Constant index expectation curvature for graphs or Riemannian manifolds
An integral geometric curvature is defined as the index expectation K(x) = E[i(x)] if a probability measure m is given on vector fields on a Riemannian manifold or on a finite simple graph. Such curvatures are local, satisfy Gauss-Bonnet and are independent of any embedding in an ambient space. While realizing constant Gauss-Bonnet-Chern curvature is not possible in general already for 4-manifolds, we prove that for compact connected manifolds, constant curvature K_m can always be realized with m supported on Morse gradient fields. We give examples of finite simple graphs which do not allow for any constant m-curvature and prove that for one-dimensional connected graphs, there is a convex set of constant curvature configurations with dimension of the first Betti number of the graph. In particular, there is always a unique constant curvature solution for trees.

The incidence comodule bialgebra of the Baez-Dolan construction
Published in Adv. Math. 383 (2021), 107693 • View PublicationBIB
Starting from any operad P, one can consider on one hand the free operad on P, and on the other hand the Baez--Dolan construction on P. These two new operads have the same space of operations, but with very different notions of arity and substitution. The main result of this paper is that the incidence bialgebras of the two-sided bar constructions of the two operads constitute together a comodule bialgebra. The result is objective: it concerns comodule-bialgebra structures on groupoid slices, and the proof is given in terms of equivalences of groupoids and homotopy pullbacks. Comodule bialgebras in the usual sense are obtained by taking homotopy cardinality. The simplest instances of the construction cover several comodule bialgebras of current interest in analysis. If P is the identity monad, then the result is the Faà di Bruno comodule bialgebra (dual to multiplication and substitution of power series). If P is any monoid $Ω$ (considered as a one-coloured operad with only unary operations), the resulting comodule bialgebra is the dual of the near-semiring of $Ω$-moulds under product and composition, as employed in Écalle's theory of resurgent functions in local dynamical systems. If P is the terminal operad, then the result is essentially the Calaque--Ebrahimi-Fard--Manchon comodule bialgebra of rooted trees, dual to composition and substitution of B-series in numerical analysis (Chartier--Hairer--Vilmart). The full generality is of interest in category theory. As it holds for any operad, the result is actually about the Baez--Dolan construction itself, providing it with a new algebraic perspective.

Kalai's conjecture in $r$-partite $r$-graphs
Kalai conjectured that every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with more than $\frac{t-1}{r} {n \choose r-1}$ edges contains all tight $r$-trees of some fixed size $t$. We prove Kalai's conjecture for $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result is asymptotically best possible up to replacing the term $\frac{t-1}{r}$ with the term $\frac{t-r+1}{r}$. We apply our main result in graphs to show an upper bound for the Turán number of trees.
On the Burning Number of $p$-Caterpillars
Published • View PublicationBIB
The burning number is a recently introduced graph parameter indicating the spreading speed of content in a graph through its edges. While the conjectured upper bound on the necessary numbers of time steps until all vertices are reached is proven for some specific graph classes it remains open for trees in general. We present two different proofs for ordinary caterpillars and prove the conjecture for a generalised version of caterpillars and for trees with a sufficient amount of leaves. Furthermore, determining the burning number for spider graphs, trees with maximum degree three and path-forests is known to be $\mathcal{NP}$-complete, however, we show that the complexity is already inherent in caterpillars with maximum degree three.
Some exact results for regular Turán problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
As a variant of the famous Turán problem, we study $\mathrm{rex}(n,F)$, the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex regular graph can have without containing a copy of $F$. We determine $\mathrm{rex}(n,K_{r+1})$ for all pairs of integers $r$ and large enough $n$. For every tree $T$, we determine $\mathrm{rex}(n,T)$ for every $n$ large enough.
The determinant of the distance matrix of graphs with at most two cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices and $D(G)$ its distance matrix. The formula for computing the determinant of this matrix in terms of the number of vertices is known when the graph is either a tree or {a} unicyclic graph. In this work we generalize these results, obtaining the determinant of the distance matrix for {all graphs} in a {class, including trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs. This class actually includes graphs with many cycles, provided that each block of the graph is at most bicyclic.}

Distribution of tree parameters by martingale approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a uniform random labelled tree, we find the limiting distribution of tree parameters which are stable (in some sense) with respect to local perturbations of the tree structure. The proof is based on the martingale central limit theorem and the Aldous--Broder algorithm. In particular, our general result implies the asymptotic normality of the number of occurrences of any given small pattern and the asymptotic log-normality of the number of automorphisms.

Spectra of infinite graphs via freeness with amalgamation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use tools from free probability to study the spectra of Hermitian operators on infinite graphs. Special attention is devoted to universal covering trees of finite graphs. For operators on these graphs we derive a new variational formula for the spectral radius and provide new proofs of results due to Sunada and Aomoto using free probability. With the goal of extending the applicability of free probability techniques beyond universal covering trees, we introduce a new combinatorial product operation on graphs and show that, in the non-commutative probability context, it corresponds to the notion of freeness with amalgamation. We show that Cayley graphs of amalgamated free products of groups, as well as universal covering trees, can be constructed using our graph product.
Planar Matrices and Arrays of Feynman Diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Very recently planar collections of Feynman diagrams were proposed by Borges and one of the authors as the natural generalization of Feynman diagrams for the computation of $k=3$ biadjoint amplitudes. Planar collections are one-dimensional arrays of metric trees satisfying an induced planarity and compatibility condition. In this work we introduce planar matrices of Feynman diagrams as the objects that compute $k=4$ biadjoint amplitudes. These are symmetric matrices of metric trees satisfying compatibility conditions. We introduce two notions of combinatorial bootstrap techniques for finding collections from Feynman diagrams and matrices from collections. As applications of the first, we find all $693$, $13\,612$, and $346\,710$ collections for $(k,n)=(3,7), (3,8),$ and $(3,9)$ respectively. As applications of the second kind, we find all $90\, 608$ and $30\,659\,424$ planar matrices that compute $(k,n)=(4,8)$ and $(4,9)$ biadjoint amplitudes respectively. As an example of the evaluation of matrices of Feynman diagrams, we present the complete form of the $(4,8)$ and $(4,9)$ biadjoint amplitudes. We also start the study of higher dimensional arrays of Feynman diagrams, including the combinatorial version of the duality between $(k,n)$ and $(n-k,n)$ objects.

Extreme Values of the Fiedler Vector on Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected tree on $n$ vertices and let $L = D-A$ denote the Laplacian matrix on $G$. The second-smallest eigenvalue $λ_{2}(G) > 0$, also known as the algebraic connectivity, as well as the associated eigenvector $φ_2$ have been of substantial interest. We investigate the question of when the maxima and minima of $φ_2$ are assumed at the endpoints of the longest path in $G$. Our results also apply to more general graphs that `behave globally' like a tree but can exhibit more complicated local structure. The crucial new ingredient is a reproducing formula for the eigenvector $φ_k$.

The Planted Matching Problem: Phase Transitions and Exact Results
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of recovering a planted matching in randomly weighted complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$. For some unknown perfect matching $M^*$, the weight of an edge is drawn from one distribution $P$ if $e \in M^*$ and another distribution $Q$ if $e \notin M^*$. Our goal is to infer $M^*$, exactly or approximately, from the edge weights. In this paper we take $P=\exp(λ)$ and $Q=\exp(1/n)$, in which case the maximum-likelihood estimator of $M^*$ is the minimum-weight matching $M_{\text{min}}$. We obtain precise results on the overlap between $M^*$ and $M_{\text{min}}$, i.e., the fraction of edges they have in common. For $λ\ge 4$ we have almost perfect recovery, with overlap $1-o(1)$ with high probability. For $λ< 4$ the expected overlap is an explicit function $α(λ) < 1$: we compute it by generalizing Aldous' celebrated proof of the $ζ(2)$ conjecture for the un-planted model, using local weak convergence to relate $K_{n,n}$ to a type of weighted infinite tree, and then deriving a system of differential equations from a message-passing algorithm on this tree.
Glauber dynamics for Ising models on random regular graphs: cut-off and metastability
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider random $d$-regular graphs, i.e., random graphs such that there are exactly $d$ edges from each vertex for some $d\ge 3$. We study both the configuration model version of this graph, which has occasional multi-edges and self-loops, as well as the simple version of it, which is a $d$-regular graph chosen uniformly at random from the collection of all $d$-regular graphs. In this paper, we discuss mixing times of Glauber dynamics for the Ising model with an external magnetic field on a random $d$-regular graph, both in the quenched as well as the annealed settings. Let $β$ be the inverse temperature, $β_c$ be the critical temperature and $B$ be the external magnetic field. Concerning the annealed measure, we show that for $β> β_c$ there exists $\hat{B}_c(β)\in (0,\infty)$ such that the model is metastable (i.e., the mixing time is exponential in the graph size $n$) when $β> β_c$ and $0 \leq B < \hat{B}_c(β)$, whereas it exhibits the cut-off phenomenon at $c_\star n \log n$ with a window of order $n$ when $β< β_c$ or $β> β_c$ and $B>\hat{B}_c(β)$. Interestingly, $\hat{B}_c(β)$ coincides with the critical external field of the Ising model on the $d$-ary tree (namely, above which the model has a unique Gibbs measure). Concerning the quenched measure, we show that there exists $B_c(β)$ with $B_c(β) \leq \hat{B}_c(β)$ such that for $β> β_c$, the mixing time is at least exponential along some subsequence $(n_k)_{k\geq 1}$ when $0 \leq B < B_c(β)$, whereas it is less than or equal to $Cn\log n$ when $B>\hat{B}_c(β)$. The quenched results also hold for the model conditioned on simplicity, for the annealed results this is unclear.

A phase transition for large values of bifurcating autoregressive models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the asymptotic behavior of the number $Z_n[a_n,\infty)$ of individuals with a large value in a stable bifurcating autoregressive process. The study of the associated first moment $\mathbb{E}(Z_n[a_n,\infty))$ is equivalent to the annealed large deviation problem $\mathbb{P}(Y_n\geq a_n)$, where $Y$ is an autoregressive process in a random environment and $a_n\rightarrow \infty$. The population with large values and the trajectorial behavior of $Z_n[a_n,\infty)$ is obtained from the ancestral paths associated to the large deviations of $Y$ together with its environment. The study of large deviations of autoregressive processes in random environment is of independent interest and achieved first in this paper. The proofs of trajectorial estimates for bifurcating autoregressive process involves then a law of large numbers for non-homogenous trees. Two regimes appear in the stable case, depending on the fact that one of the autoregressive parameter is greater than one or not. It yields two different asymptotic behaviors for the large local densities and maximal value of the bifurcating autoregressive process.

On the spectrum of random walks on complete finite $d$-ary trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper, we determine the full spectrum of the simple random walk on finite, complete $d$-ary trees. We also find an eigenbasis for the transition matrix. As an application, we apply our results to get a lower bound for the interchange process on complete, finite d-ary trees, which we conjecture to be sharp.
Comparison of Wiener index and Zagreb eccentricity indices
The first and the second Zagreb eccentricity index of a graph $G$ are defined as $E_1(G)=\sum_{v\in V(G)}\varepsilon_{G}(v)^{2}$ and $E_2(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\varepsilon_{G}(u)\varepsilon_{G}(v)$, respectively, where $\varepsilon_G(v)$ is the eccentricity of a vertex $v$. In this paper the invariants $E_1$, $E_2$, and the Wiener index are compared on graphs with diameter $2$, on trees, on a newly introduced class of universally diametrical graphs, and on Cartesian product graphs. In particular, if the diameter of a tree $T$ is not too big, then $W(T) \ge E_2(T)$ holds, and if the diameter of $T$ is large, then $W(T) < E_1(T)$ holds.
Operads on graphs: extending the pre-Lie operad and general construction
Published • View PublicationBIB
The overall aim of this paper is to define a structure of graph operads, thus generalizing the celebrated pre-Lie operad on rooted trees. More precisely, we define two operads on multigraphs, and exhibit a non trivial link between them and the pre-Lie and Kontsevich- Willwacher operads. We study one of these operads in more detail. While its structure is too involved to exhibit a description by generators and relations, we show that it has interesting finitely generated sub-operads, with links with the commutative and the magmatic commutative operads. In particular, one of them is Koszul and this allows us to compute its Koszul dual. Finally, we introduce a new framework on species and operads and a general way to define operads on multigraphs.

The Ramsey Number for Tree Versus Wheel with Odd Order
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chen et al. (2004) strongly conjectured that R(Tn,Wm)=2n-1 if the maximum degree of Tn is small and m is even. Related to the conjecture, it is interesting to know for which tree Tn, we have R(Tn,Wm) > 2n-1 for even m. In this paper, we find the Ramsey number R(Tn,W8) for tree Tn with the maximum degree of Tn is at least n-3, namely R(Tn,W8) > 2n-1 for almost all such tree Tn. We also prove that if the maximum degree of Tn is large, then R(Tn,Wm) is a function of both m and n. In the end, we refine the conjecture of Chen et al. by giving the condition of small maximum degree. For a tree Tn with large maximum degree and even m, the R(Tn,Wm) is also unknown in general. In this paper, we shall determine the Ramsey number R(Tn,W8) for all trees Tn of order n with the maximum degree of Tn is at least n-3.
