$e$-Positivity Results and Conjectures
In a 2016 ArXiv posting F. Bergeron listed a variety of symmetric functions $G[X;q]$ with the property that $G[X;1+q]$ is $e$-positive. A large subvariety of his examples could be explained by the conjecture that the Dyck path LLT polynomials exhibit the same phenomenon. In this paper we list the results of computer explorations which suggest that other examples exhibit the same phenomenon. We prove two of the resulting conjectures and propose algorithms that would prove several of our conjectures. In writing this paper we have learned that similar findings have been independently discovered by Per Alexandersson.

Study of the $p,q$-deformed Touchard polynomials
A two-parameter deformation of the Touchard polynomials, based on the NEXT $q$-exponential function of Tsallis, defines two statistics on set partitions. The generating function of classical Touchard polynomials is a composition of two exponential functions. By applying analysis of a combinatorial structure of the deformed exponential function, we establish explicit formulae for both statistics. Moreover, the explicit formulae for the deformed Touchard polynomials makes possible to evaluate coefficients of Taylor series expansion for wide variety of functions with different values of parameters $p$ and $q$.

A Framework for Modular Properties of False Theta Functions
False theta functions closely resemble ordinary theta functions, however they do not have the modular transformation properties that theta functions have. In this paper, we find modular completions for false theta functions, which among other things gives an efficient way to compute their obstruction to modularity. This has potential applications for a variety of contexts where false and partial theta series appear. To exemplify the utility of this derivation, we discuss the details of its use on two cases. First, we derive a convergent Rademacher-type exact formula for the number of unimodal sequences via the Circle Method and extend earlier work on their asymptotic properties. Secondly, we show how quantum modular properties of the limits of false theta functions can be rederived directly from the modular completion of false theta functions proposed in this paper.

$X$-Ramanujan Graphs
Let $X$ be an infinite graph of bounded degree; e.g., the Cayley graph of a free product of finite groups. If $G$ is a finite graph covered by $X$, it is said to be $X$-Ramanujan if its second-largest eigenvalue $λ_2(G)$ is at most the spectral radius $ρ(X)$ of $X$, and more generally $k$-quasi-$X$-Ramanujan if $λ_k(G)$ is at most $ρ(X)$. In case $X$ is the infinite $Δ$-regular tree, this reduces to the well known notion of a finite $Δ$-regular graph being Ramanujan. Inspired by the Interlacing Polynomials method of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava, we show the existence of infinitely many $k$-quasi-$X$-Ramanujan graphs for a variety of infinite $X$. In particular, $X$ need not be a tree; our analysis is applicable whenever $X$ is what we call an additive product graph. This additive product is a new construction of an infinite graph $\mathsf{AddProd}(A_1, \dots, A_c)$ from finite 'atom' graphs $A_1, \dots, A_c$ over a common vertex set. It generalizes the notion of the free product graph $A_1 * \cdots * A_c$ when the atoms $A_j$ are vertex-transitive, and it generalizes the notion of the universal covering tree when the atoms $A_j$ are single-edge graphs. Key to our analysis is a new graph polynomial $α(A_1, \dots, A_c;x)$ that we call the additive characteristic polynomial. It generalizes the well known matching polynomial $μ(G;x)$ in case the atoms $A_j$ are the single edges of $G$, and it generalizes the $r$-characteristic polynomial introduced in [Ravichandran'16, Leake-Ravichandran'18]. We show that $α(A_1, \dots, A_c;x)$ is real-rooted, and all of its roots have magnitude at most $ρ(\mathsf{AddProd}(A_1, \dots, A_c))$. This last fact is proven by generalizing Godsil's notion of treelike walks on a graph $G$ to a notion of freelike walks on a collection of atoms $A_1, \dots, A_c$.

Projective geometry of Wachspress coordinates
We show that there is a unique hypersurface of minimal degree passing through the non-faces of a polytope which is defined by a simple hyperplane arrangement. This generalizes the construction of the adjoint curve of a polygon by Wachspress in 1975. The defining polynomial of our adjoint hypersurface is the adjoint polynomial introduced by Warren in 1996. This is a key ingredient for the definition of Wachspress coordinates, which are barycentric coordinates on an arbitrary convex polytope. The adjoint polynomial also appears both in algebraic statistics, when studying the moments of uniform probability distributions on polytopes, and in intersection theory, when computing Segre classes of monomial schemes. We describe the Wachspress map, the rational map defined by the Wachspress coordinates, and the Wachspress variety, the image of this map. The inverse of the Wachspress map is the projection from the linear span of the image of the adjoint hypersurface. To relate adjoints of polytopes to classical adjoints of divisors in algebraic geometry, we study irreducible hypersurfaces that have the same degree and multiplicity along the non-faces of a polytope as its defining hyperplane arrangement. We list all finitely many combinatorial types of polytopes in dimensions two and three for which such irreducible hypersurfaces exist. In the case of polygons, the general such curves< are elliptic. In the three-dimensional case, the general such surfaces are either K3 or elliptic.

Regularity theorem for totally nonnegative flag varieties
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 35 (2022), no. 2, 513-579 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety $G/P$ (in the sense of Lusztig) is a regular CW complex, confirming a conjecture of Williams. In particular, the closure of each positroid cell inside the totally nonnegative Grassmannian is homeomorphic to a ball, confirming a conjecture of Postnikov.

Toric degenerations of Grassmannians and Schubert varieties from matching field tableaux
Published in Journal of Algebra 559, 646-678, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorics of Gröbner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Plücker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterization of toric ideals among these degenerations in terms of the combinatorics of matching fields, permutations, and semi-standard tableaux.

Hook inequalities
We give an elementary proof of the recent hook inequality given in [MPP3]: $\prod_{u\in λ} h(u) \, \le \, \prod_{u\in λ} h^\ast(u),$ where $h(u)$ is the usual hook in Young diagram $λ$, and $h^\ast(i,j)=i+j-1$. We then obtain a large variety of similar inequalities and their high-dimensional generalizations.

Local properties of Schubert Varieties in the Symplectic Grassmannian via a bounded RSK correspondence
In a paper by Ghorpade and Raghavan, they provide an explicit combinatorial description of the Hilbert function of the tangent cone at any point on a Schubert variety in the symplectic Grassmannian, by giving a certain "degree-preserving" bijection between a set of monomials defined by an initial ideal and a "standard monomial basis". We prove here that this bijection is in fact a bounded RSK correspondence.

Spanning subspace configurations
A {\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

Extension theorems for Hamming varieties over finite fields
We study the finite field extension estimates for Hamming varieties $H_j, j\in \mathbb F_q^*,$ defined by $H_j=\{x\in \mathbb F_q^d: \prod_{k=1}^d x_k=j\},$ where $\mathbb F_q^d$ denotes the $d$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. We show that although the maximal Fourier decay bound on $H_j$ away from the origin is not good, the Stein-Tomas $L^2\to L^r$ extension estimate for $H_j$ holds.
Euler characteristics in the quantum $K$-theory of flag varieties
We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Along the way, we provide a description of the smallest degree $d$ in terms of its projections to flag varieties defined by maximal parabolic subgroups.

Deformations of Dimer Models
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 030, 53 pages • View PublicationBIB
The combinatorial mutation of polygons, which transforms a given lattice polygon into another one, is an important operation to understand mirror partners for two-dimensional Fano manifolds, and the mutation-equivalent polygons give ${\mathbb Q}$-Gorenstein deformation-equivalent toric varieties. On the other hand, for a dimer model, which is a bipartite graph described on the real two-torus, one can assign a lattice polygon called the perfect matching polygon. It is known that for each lattice polygon $P$ there exists a dimer model having $P$ as the perfect matching polygon and satisfying certain consistency conditions. Moreover, a dimer model has rich information regarding toric geometry associated with the perfect matching polygon. In this paper, we introduce a set of operations which we call deformations of consistent dimer models, and show that the deformations of consistent dimer models realize the combinatorial mutations of the associated perfect matching polygons.

Tropical ideals do not realise all Bergman fans
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have weight one.
Motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells, Hecke algebras, and applications to Casselman's problem
Published in Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 57 (2024), no. 1, 87-141 • View PublicationBIB
Motivic Chern classes are elements in the K-theory of an algebraic variety $X$, depending on an extra parameter $y$. They are determined by functoriality and a normalization property for smooth $X$. In this paper we calculate the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in the (equivariant) K-theory of flag manifolds $G/B$. We show that the motivic class of a Schubert cell is determined recursively by the Demazure-Lusztig operators in the Hecke algebra of the Weyl group of $G$, starting from the class of a point. The resulting classes are conjectured to satisfy a positivity property. We use the recursions to give a new proof that they are equivalent to certain K-theoretic stable envelopes recently defined by Okounkov and collaborators, thus recovering results of Fehér, Rimányi and Weber. The Hecke algebra action on the K-theory of the Langlands dual flag manifold matches the Hecke action on the Iwahori invariants of the principal series representation associated to an unramified character for a group over a nonarchimedean local field. This gives a correspondence identifying the duals of the motivic Chern classes to the standard basis in the Iwahori invariants, and the fixed point basis to Casselman's basis. We apply this correspondence to prove two conjectures of Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse concerning factorizations and holomorphy properties of the coefficients in the transition matrix between the standard and the Casselman's basis.

Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties. We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

Skeletons of Prym varieties and Brill--Noether theory
Published in Alg. Number Th. 15 (2021) 785-820 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the Prym variety associated to an unramified double cover of an algebraic curve is naturally isomorphic (as a principally polarized tropical abelian variety) to the tropical Prym variety of the associated tropical double cover. This confirms a conjecture by Jensen and the first author. We prove a new upper bound on the dimension of the Prym-Brill-Noether locus for generic unramified double covers of curves with fixed even gonality on the base. Our methods also give a new proof of the classical Prym-Brill-Noether Theorem for generic unramified double covers that is originally due to Welters and Bertram.

Graver Bases via Quantum Annealing with Application to Non-Linear Integer Programs
We propose a novel hybrid quantum-classical approach to calculate Graver bases, which have the potential to solve a variety of hard linear and non-linear integer programs, as they form a test set (optimality certificate) with very appealing properties. The calculation of Graver bases is exponentially hard (in general) on classical computers, so they not used for solving practical problems on commercial solvers. With a quantum annealer, however, it may be a viable approach to use them. We test two hybrid quantum-classical algorithms (on D-Wave)--one for computing Graver basis and a second for optimizing non-linear integer programs that utilize Graver bases--to understand the strengths and limitations of the practical quantum annealers available today. Our experiments suggest that with a modest increase in coupler precision--along with near-term improvements in the number of qubits and connectivity (density of hardware graph) that are expected--the ability to outperform classical best-in-class algorithms is within reach, with respect to non-linear integer optimization.

Lorentzian polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the class of Lorentzian polynomials. The class contains homogeneous stable polynomials as well as volume polynomials of convex bodies and projective varieties. We prove that the Hessian of a nonzero Lorentzian polynomial has exactly one positive eigenvalue at any point on the positive orthant. This property can be seen as an analog of Hodge--Riemann relations for Lorentzian polynomials. Lorentzian polynomials are intimately connected to matroid theory and negative dependence properties. We show that matroids, and more generally M-convex sets, are characterized by the Lorentzian property, and develop a theory around Lorentzian polynomials. In particular, we provide a large class of linear operators that preserve the Lorentzian property and prove that Lorentzian measures enjoy several negative dependence properties. We also prove that the class of tropicalized Lorentzian polynomials coincides with the class of M-convex functions in the sense of discrete convex analysis. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from M-convex functions. We give two applications of the general theory. First, we prove that the homogenized multivariate Tutte polynomial of a matroid is Lorentzian whenever the parameter q satisfies $0 < q \le 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest Mason's conjecture from 1972 and negative dependence properties of the random cluster model model in statistical physics. Second, we prove that the multivariate characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix is Lorentzian. This refines a result of Holtz who proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of an M-matrix form an ultra log-concave sequence.

An Eisenbud-Goto-type Upper Bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of Fake Weighted Projective Spaces
We will give an upper bound for the $k$-normality of very ample lattice simplices, and then give an Eisenbud-Goto-type bound for some special classes of projective toric varieties.
