On radiuses of convergence of q-metallic numbers and related q-rational numbers
Published in Research in Number Theory, 8(3), Sep, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
The q-rational numbers and the q-irrational numbers are introduced by S. Morier-Genoud and V. Ovsienko. In this paper, we focus on q-real quadratic irrational numbers, especially q-metallic numbers and q-rational sequences which converge to q-metallic numbers, and consider the radiuses of convergence of them when we assume that q is a complex number. We construct two sequences given by recurrence formula as a generalization of the q-deformation of Fibonacci numbers and Pell numbers which are introduced by S. Morier-Genoud and V. Ovsienko. We give an estimation of radiuses of convergence of them, and we solve on conjecture of the lower bound expected which is introduced by L. Leclere, S. Morier-Genoud, V. Ovsienko, and A. Veselov for the metallic numbers and its convergence rational sequence. In addition, we obtain a relationship between the radius of convergence of the [n,n,...,n,...]_q and [n,n,...,n]_q in the case of n=3 and n=4.

Ferrers Graphs, D-Permutations, and Surjective Staircases
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new family of hyperplane arrangements inspired by the homogenized Linial arrangement (which was recently introduced by Hetyei), and show that the intersection lattices of these arrangements are isomorphic to the bond lattices of Ferrers graphs. Using recent work of Lazar and Wachs we are able to give combinatorial interpretations of the characteristic polynomials of these arrangements in terms of permutation enumeration. For certain infinite families of these hyperplane arrangements, we are able to give generating function formulas for their characteristic polynomials. To do so, we develop a generalization of Dumont's surjective staircases, and introduce a polynomial which enumerates these generalized surjective staircases according to several statistics. We prove a recurrence for these polynomials and show that in certain special cases this recurrence can be solved explicitly to yield a generating function. We also prove refined versions of several of these results using the theory of complex hyperplane arrangements.

Stable sets in flag spheres
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide lower and upper bounds on the minimum size of a maximum stable set over graphs of flag spheres, as a function of the dimension of the sphere and the number of vertices. Further, we use stable sets to obtain an improved Lower Bound Theorem for the face numbers of flag spheres.

Classification of variants of partial Brauer monoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A variant of a semigroup $S$ with respect to an element $a\in S$ is the semigroup $S^{a}=(S,\star_{a})$, where $x\star_{a}y=xay$ for any $x,y\in S$. Here, $a$ is the sandwich element of $S^{a}$. In this article, we study variants of the partial Brauer monoid $\mathcal{PB}_{n}$ for $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We give the classification of these variants in the case when the rank of the sandwich element is nonzero.
Most direct product of graphs are Type 1
A \textit{$k$-total coloring} of a graph $G$ is an assignment of $k$ colors to its elements (vertices and edges) so that adjacent or incident elements have different colors. The total chromatic number is the smallest integer $k$ for which the graph $G$ has a $k$-total coloring. Clearly, this number is at least $Δ(G)+1$, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. When the lower bound is reached, the graph is said to be Type~1. The upper bound of $Δ(G)+2$ is a central problem that has been open for fifty years, is verified for graphs with maximum degree 4 but not for regular graphs. Most classified direct product of graphs are Type~1. The particular cases of the direct product of cycle graphs $C_m \times C_n$, for $m =3p, 5\ell$ and $8\ell$ with $p \geq 2$ and $\ell \geq 1$, and arbitrary $n \geq 3$, were previously known to be Type 1 and motivated the conjecture that, except for $C_4 \times C_4$, all direct product of cycle graphs $C_m \times C_n$ with $m,n \geq 3$ are Type 1. We give a general pattern proving that all $C_m \times C_n$ are Type 1, except for $C_4 \times C_4$. dditionally, we investigate sufficient conditions to ensure that the direct product reaches the lower bound for the total chromatic number.

On the Enumeration and Asymptotic Analysis of Fibonacci Compositions
We study Fibonacci compositions, which are compositions of natural numbers that only use Fibonacci numbers, in two different contexts. We first prove inequalities comparing the number of Fibonacci compositions to regular compositions where summands have a maximum possible value. Then, we consider asymptotic properties of Fibonacci compositions, comparing them to compositions whose terms come from positive linear recurrence sequences. Finally, we consider analogues of these results where we do not allow the use of a certain number of consecutive Fibonacci numbers starting from $F_2 = 1$.

Off-diagonal book Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The book graph $B_n^{(k)}$ consists of $n$ copies of $K_{k+1}$ joined along a common $K_k$. In the prequel to this paper, we studied the diagonal Ramsey number $r(B_n^{(k)}, B_n^{(k)})$. Here we consider the natural off-diagonal variant $r(B_{cn}^{(k)}, B_n^{(k)})$ for fixed $c \in (0,1]$. In this more general setting, we show that an interesting dichotomy emerges: for very small $c$, a simple $k$-partite construction dictates the Ramsey function and all nearly-extremal colorings are close to being $k$-partite, while, for $c$ bounded away from $0$, random colorings of an appropriate density are asymptotically optimal and all nearly-extremal colorings are quasirandom. Our investigations also open up a range of questions about what happens for intermediate values of $c$.

Semi-magic matrices for dihedral groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
After reviewing the group structure and representation theory for the dihedral group $D_{2n},$ we consider an intertwining operator $Φ_ρ$ from the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[D_{2n}]$ into a corresponding space of semi-magic matrices. From this intertwining operator, one obtains the generating function for enumerating the associated semi-magic squares with fixed line sum and an algebra extending the circulant matrices. While this work complements the approach to $D_{2n}$ through permutation polytopes, we use only methods from representation theory.
Active clustering for labeling training data
Published in NeurIPS 2021 • Search Publication
Gathering training data is a key step of any supervised learning task, and it is both critical and expensive. Critical, because the quantity and quality of the training data has a high impact on the performance of the learned function. Expensive, because most practical cases rely on humans-in-the-loop to label the data. The process of determining the correct labels is much more expensive than comparing two items to see whether they belong to the same class. Thus motivated, we propose a setting for training data gathering where the human experts perform the comparatively cheap task of answering pairwise queries, and the computer groups the items into classes (which can be labeled cheaply at the very end of the process). Given the items, we consider two random models for the classes: one where the set partition they form is drawn uniformly, the other one where each item chooses its class independently following a fixed distribution. In the first model, we characterize the algorithms that minimize the average number of queries required to cluster the items and analyze their complexity. In the second model, we analyze a specific algorithm family, propose as a conjecture that they reach the minimum average number of queries and compare their performance to a random approach. We also propose solutions to handle errors or inconsistencies in the experts' answers.

On sufficient conditions for spanning structures in dense graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study structural conditions in dense graphs that guarantee the existence of vertex-spanning substructures such as Hamilton cycles. It is easy to see that every Hamiltonian graph is connected, has a perfect fractional matching and, excluding the bipartite case, contains an odd cycle. A simple consequence of the Robust Expander Theorem of Kühn, Osthus and Treglown tells us that any large enough graph that robustly satisfies these properties must already be Hamiltonian. Our main result generalises this phenomenon to powers of cycles and graphs of sublinear bandwidth subject to natural generalisations of connectivity, matchings and odd cycles. This answers a question of Ebsen, Maesaka, Reiher, Schacht and Schülke and solves the embedding problem that underlies multiple lines of research on sufficient conditions for spanning structures in dense graphs. As applications, we recover and establish Bandwidth Theorems in a variety of settings including Ore-type degree conditions, Pósa-type degree conditions, deficiency-type conditions, locally dense and inseparable graphs, multipartite graphs as well as robust expanders.

On plethysms and Sylow branching coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a recursive formula for plethysm coefficients of the form $a^μ_{λ,(m)}$, generalising results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro and de Boeck--Paget--Wildon. From this we deduce a stability result and resolve two conjectures of de Boeck concerning plethysms, as well as obtain new results on Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups for the prime 2. Further, letting $P_n$ denote a Sylow 2-subgroup of $S_n$, we show that almost all Sylow branching coefficients of $S_n$ corresponding to the trivial character of $P_n$ are positive.

Growing uniform planar maps face by face
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide "growth schemes" for inductively generating uniform random $2p$-angulations of the sphere with $n$ faces, as well as uniform random simple triangulations of the sphere with $2n$ faces. In the case of $2p$-angulations, we provide a way to insert a new face at a random location in a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n$ faces in such a way that the new map is precisely a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n+1$ faces. Similarly, given a uniform simple triangulation of the sphere with $2n$ faces, we describe a way to insert two new adjacent triangles so as to obtain a uniform simple triangulation of the sphere with $2n+2$ faces. The latter is based on a new bijective presentation of simple triangulations that relies on a construction by Poulalhon and Schaeffer.

Reflection factorizations and quasi-Coxeter elements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the so-called dual Matsumoto property or Hurwitz action in finite, affine and arbitrary Coxeter groups. In particular, we want to investigate how to reduce reflection factorizations and how two reflection factorizations of the same element are related to each other. We are motivated by the dual approach to Coxeter groups proposed by Bessis and the question whether there is an anlogue of the well known Matsumoto property for reflection factorizations. Our aim is a substantial understanding of the Hurwitz action. We therefore reprove uniformly results of Lewis and Reiner as well as Baumeister, Gobet, Roberts and the first author on the Hurwitz in finite Coxeter groups. Further we show that in an arbitrary Coxeter group all reduced reflection factorizations of the same element appear in the same Hurwitz orbit after a suitable extension by simple reflections. As parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements play an outstanding role in the study of the Hurwitz action, we aim to characterize these elements. We give characterizations of maximal parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements in arbitrary Coxeter groups as well as a characterization of all parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements in affine Coxeter groups.

Complete characterization of the minimal-ABC trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
The problem of characterizing trees with minimal atom-bond-connectivity index (minimal-ABC trees) has a reputation as one of the most demanding recent open optimization problems in mathematical chemistry. Here firstly, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture, which states that enough large minimal-ABC trees are comprised solely of a root vertex and so-called $D_z$- and $D_{z+1}$-branches. Based on the presented theoretical results here and some already known results, we obtain enough constraints to reduce the search space and solve the optimization problem, and thus, determine exactly the minimal-ABC trees of a given arbitrary order.

Knot theory and cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish a connection between knot theory and cluster algebras via representation theory. To every knot diagram (or link diagram), we associate a cluster algebra by constructing a quiver with potential. The rank of the cluster algebra is $2n$, where $n$ is the number of crossing points in the knot diagram. We then construct $2n$ indecomposable modules $T(i)$ over the Jacobian algebra of the quiver with potential. For each $T(i)$, we show that the submodule lattice is isomorphic to the corresponding lattice of Kauffman states. We then give a realization of the Alexander polynomial of the knot as a specialization of the $F$-polynomial of $T(i)$, for every $i$. Furthermore, we conjecture that the collection of the $T(i)$ forms a cluster in the cluster algebra whose quiver is isomorphic to the opposite of the initial quiver, and that the resulting cluster automorphism is of order two.

Novel Binary Addition Tree Algorithm (BAT) for Calculating the Direct Lower-Bound of the Highly Reliable Binary-State Network Reliability
Published • View Publication • BIB
Real-world applications such as the internet of things, wireless sensor networks, smart grids, transportation networks, communication networks, social networks, and computer grid systems are typically modeled as network structures. Network reliability represents the success probability of a network and it is an effective and popular metric for evaluating the performance of all types of networks. Binary-state networks composed of binary-state (e.g., working or failed) components (arcs and/or nodes) are some of the most popular network structures. The scale of networks has grown dramatically in recent years. For example, social networks have more than a billion users. Additionally, the reliability of components has increased as a result of both mature and emergent technology. For highly reliable networks, it is more practical to calculate approximated reliability, rather than exact reliability, which is an NP-hard problem. Therefore, we propose a novel direct reliability lower bound based on the binary addition tree algorithm to calculate approximate reliability. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed reliability bound are analyzed based on time complexity and validated through numerical experiments.

Extremal Sidon sets are Fourier uniform, with applications to partition regularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalising results of Erdős-Freud and Lindström, we prove that the largest Sidon subset of a bounded interval of integers is equidistributed in Bohr neighbourhoods. We establish this by showing that extremal Sidon sets are Fourier-pseudorandom, in that they have no large non-trivial Fourier coefficients. As a further application we deduce that, for any partition regular equation in five or more variables, every finite colouring of an extremal Sidon set has a monochromatic solution.

Orbit configuration space of standard action and cellular methods of poset
We extend the existing idea of "cellular poset", introduce a collection of "cellular methods" for the computation of homology of intersection lattice of a complicated subspace arrangement, and for the computation of multiplicative structure induced by intersection. As an application, we give a presentation of cohomology ring of orbit configuration space of standard action by cellular methods and a spectral sequence associated with Grothendieck fibration of poset.
On the existence of graphs which can colour every regular graph

Let $H$ and $G$ be graphs. An $H$-colouring of $G$ is a proper edge-colouring $f:E(G)\rightarrow E(H)$ such that for any vertex $u\in V(G)$ there exists a vertex $v\in V(H)$ with $f\left (\partial_Gu\right )=\partial_Hv$, where $\partial_Gu$ and $\partial_Hv$ respectively denote the sets of edges in $G$ and $H$ incident to the vertices $u$ and $v$. If $G$ admits an $H$-colouring we say that $H$ colours $G$. The question whether there exists a graph $H$ that colours every bridgeless cubic graph is addressed directly by the Petersen Colouring Conjecture, which states that the Petersen graph colours every bridgeless cubic graph. In 2012, Mkrtchyan showed that if this conjecture is true, the Petersen graph is the unique connected bridgeless cubic graph $H$ which can colour all bridgeless cubic graphs. In this paper we extend this and show that if we were to remove all degree conditions on $H$, every bridgeless cubic graph $G$ can be coloured substantially only by a unique other graph: the subcubic multigraph $S_{4}$ on four vertices. A few similar results are provided also under weaker assumptions on the graph $G$. In the second part of the paper, we also consider $H$-colourings of regular graphs having degree strictly greater than $3$ and show that: (i) for any $r>3$, there does not exist a connected graph $H$ (possibly containing parallel edges) that colours every $r$-regular multigraph, and (ii) for every $r>1$, there does not exist a connected graph $H$ (possibly containing parallel edges) that colours every $2r$-regular simple graph.
