Globally balancing spanning trees
We show that for every graph $G$ that contains two edge-disjoint spanning trees, we can choose two edge-disjoint spanning trees $T_1,T_2$ of $G$ such that $|d_{T_1}(v)-d_{T_2}(v)|\leq 5$ for all $v \in V(G)$. We also prove the more general statement that for every positive integer $k$, there is a constant $c_k \in O(\log k)$ such that for every graph $G$ that contains $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees, we can choose $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees $T_1,\ldots,T_k$ of $G$ satisfying $|d_{T_i}(v)-d_{T_j}(v)|\leq c_k$ for all $v \in V(G)$ and $i,j \in \{1,\ldots,k\}$. This resolves a conjecture of Kriesell.
Towards a Theory of Domains for Harmonic Functions and its Symbolic Counterpart
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we begin by reviewing the calculus induced by the framework of [10]. In there, we extended Polylogarithm functions over a subalgebra of noncommutative rational power series, recognizable by finite state (multiplicity) automata over the alphabet X = {x 0 , x 1 }. The stability of this calculus under shuffle products relies on the nuclearity of the target space [31]. We also concentrated on algebraic and analytic aspects of this extension allowing to index polylogarithms, at non positive multi-indices, by rational series and also allowing to regularize divergent polyzetas, at non positive multi-indices [10]. As a continuation of works in [10] and in order to understand the bridge between the extension of this "polylogarithmic calculus" and the world of harmonic sums, we propose a local theory, adapted to a full calculus on indices of Harmonic Sums based on the Taylor expansions, around zero, of polylogarithms with index x 1 on the rightmost end. This theory is not only compatible with Stuffle products but also with the Analytic Model. In this respect, it provides a stable and fully algorithmic model for Harmonic calculus. Examples by computer are also provided 6 .
On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

Some coset actions in $G_2(q)$ and distance-transitive graphs
This paper studies whether there are distance-transitive graphs arising from the coset actions of $G_2(q)$ on the subfield subgroup $G_2(\sqrt{q})$ or $G_2(q)$ on the Ree subgroup $^2G_2(q)$. It is found that there are no such graphs, even if the groups are extended by outer automorphisms of $G_2(q)$.

On the automorphism groups of rank-4 primitive coherent configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is the minimum number of points not fixed by non-identity elements of $G$. Lower bounds on the minimal degree have strong structural consequences on $G$. Babai conjectured that if a primitive coherent configuration with $n$ vertices is not a Cameron scheme, then its automorphism group has minimal degree $\geq cn$ for some constant $c>0$. In 2014, Babai proved the desired lower bound on the minimal degree of the automorphism groups of strongly regular graphs, thus confirming the conjecture for primitive coherent configurations of rank 3. In this paper, we extend Babai's result to primitive coherent configurations of rank 4, confirming the conjecture in this special case. The proofs combine structural and spectral methods.

$k$-Factorizations of the full cycle and generalized Mahonian statistics on $k$-forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop direct bijections between the set $F_n^k$ of minimal factorizations of the long cycle $(0\,1\,\cdots\, kn)$ into $(k+1)$-cycle factors and the set $R_n^k$ of rooted labelled forests on vertices $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with edges coloured with $\{0,1,\ldots,k-1\}$ that map natural statistics on the former to generalized Mahonian statistics on the latter. In particular, we examine the generalized major index on forests $R_n^k$ and show that it has a simple and natural interpretation in the context of factorizations. Our results extend those by the present authors (2021), which treated the case $k=1$ through a different approach, and provide a bijective proof of the equidistribution observed by Yan (1997) between displacement of $k$-parking functions and generalized inversions of $k$-forests.
Deletion-contraction for a unified Laplacian and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the weighted Laplacian also satisfies a vertex analogue of deletion-contraction. We give applications of weighted Laplacian eigenvalues to sparse cuts, independent sets and graph colouring, and establish new cases of a conjecture of Stanley on distinguishing nonisomorphic trees.
Connected greedy colourings of perfect graphs and other classes: the good, the bad and the ugly
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:2, Graph Theory (April 2, 2024) dmtcs:8715 • View Publication • BIB
The Grundy number of a graph is the maximum number of colours used by the "First-Fit" greedy colouring algorithm over all vertex orderings. Given a vertex ordering $σ= v_1,\dots,v_n$, the "First-Fit" greedy colouring algorithm colours the vertices in the order of $σ$ by assigning to each vertex the smallest colour unused in its neighbourhood. By restricting this procedure to vertex orderings that are connected, we obtain {\em connected greedy colourings}. For some graphs, all connected greedy colourings use exactly $χ(G)$ colours; they are called {\em good graphs}. On the opposite, some graphs do not admit any connected greedy colouring using only $χ(G)$ colours; they are called {\em ugly graphs}. We show that no perfect graph is ugly. We also give simple proofs of this fact for subclasses of perfect graphs (block graphs, comparability graphs), and show that no $K_4$-minor free graph is ugly. Moreover, our proofs are constructive, and imply the existence of polynomial-time algorithms to compute good connected orderings for these graph classes.

Typical large graphs with given edge and triangle densities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The analysis of large simple graphs with extreme values of the densities of edges and triangles has been extended to the statistical structure of typical graphs of fixed intermediate densities, by the use of large deviations of Erdoes-Renyi graphs. We prove that the typical graph exhibits sharp singularities as the constraining densities vary between different curves of extreme values, and we determine the precise nature of the singularities. The extension to graphs with fixed densities of edges and k-cycles for odd k>3 is straightforward and we note the simple changes in the proof.

The diagonal of the operahedra
Published in Advances in Mathematics 405 (2022), 108494 • View Publication • BIB
The primary goal of this article is to set up a general theory of coherent cellular approximations of the diagonal for families of polytopes by developing the method introduced by N. Masuda, A. Tonks, H. Thomas and B. Vallette. We apply this theory to the study of the operahedra, a family of polytopes ranging from the associahedra to the permutahedra, and which encodes homotopy operads. After defining Loday realizations of the operahedra, we make a coherent choice of cellular approximations of the diagonal, which leads to a compatible topological cellular operad structure on them. This gives a model for topological and algebraic homotopy operads and an explicit functorial formula for their tensor product.

Chords of 2-factors in planar cubic bridgeless graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 38, 177 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We show that every edge in a 2-edge-connected planar cubic graph is either contained in a 2-edge-cut or is a chord of some cycle that is contained in a 2-factor of the graph. As a consequence, we show that every edge in a cyclically 4-edge-connected planar cubic graph, except $K_2^3$ and $K_4$, is contained in a perfect matching whose removal disconnects the graph. We obtain a complete characterization of 2-edge-connected planar cubic graphs that have an edge such that every 2-factor containing the edge is a Hamiltonian cycle, and also of those that have an edge such that the complement of every perfect matching containing the edge is a Hamiltonian cycle. Another immediate consequence of the main result is that for any two edges contained in a facial cycle of a 2-edge-connected planar cubic graph, there exists a 2-factor in the graph such that both edges are contained in the same cycle of the 2-factor. We conjecture that this property holds for any two edges in a 2-edge-connected planar cubic graph, and prove it for planar cubic bipartite graphs. The main result is proved in the dual form by showing that every plane triangulation admits a vertex 3-coloring such that no face is monochromatic and there is exactly one specified edge between a specified pair of color classes.
On the average hitting times of the squares of cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The exact formula for the average hitting time (HT, as an abbreviation) of simple random walks from one vertex to any other vertex on the square $C^2_N$ of an $N$-vertex cycle graph $C_N$ was given by N. Chair [\textit{Journal of Statistical Physics}, \textbf{154} (2014) 1177-1190]. In that paper, the author gives the expression for the even $N$ case and the expression for the odd $N$ case separately. In this paper, by using an elementary method different from Chair (2014), we give a much simpler single formula for the HT's of simple random walks on $C^2_N$. Our proof is considerably short and fully combinatorial, in particular, has no-need of any spectral graph theoretical arguments. Not only the formula itself but also intermediate results through the process of our proof describe clear relations between the HT's of simple random walks on $C^2_N$ and the Fibonacci numbers.

Cylindric plane partitions, Lambda determinants, Commutants in semicircular systems
This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with cylindric plane partitions. The second with lambda-determinants and the third with commutators in semi-circular systems. For more detailed abstract please see inside. Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. The first result of section one is a new bijective proof of Borodin's identity which makes use of Fomin's growth diagram framework for generalized RSK correspondences. The second result is a $(q,t)$-analog of Borodin's identity which extends previous work by Okada in the reverse plane partition case. The third result is an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald weight occurring in the $(q,t)$-analog using the non-intersecting lattice path model for cylindric plane partitions. Alternating sign matrices were discovered by Robbins and Rumsey whilst studying \emph{$λ$-determinants}. In the second part of this thesis we prove a multi-parameter generalization of the $λ$-determinant, generalizing a recent result by di Francesco. Like the original $λ$-determinant, our formula exhibits the \emph{Laurent phenomenon}. Semicircular systems were first introduced by Voiculescu as a part of his study of von Neumann algebras. In the third part of this thesis we study certain commutator subalgebras of the semicircular system. We find a projection matrix with an interesting self-similar structure. Making use of our projection formula we given an alternative, elementary proof that the semicircular system is a factor.

We prove that the order of the canonical vector bundle over the configuration space is $2$ for a general planar graph, and is $4$ for a nonplanar graph.
Maximal $3$-wise intersecting families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family $\mathcal{F}$ on ground set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ is maximal $k$-wise intersecting if every collection of at most $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has non-empty intersection, and no other set can be added to $\mathcal{F}$ while maintaining this property. In 1974, Erdős and Kleitman asked for the minimum size of a maximal $k$-wise intersecting family. We answer their question for $k=3$ and sufficiently large $n$. We show that the unique minimum family is obtained by partitioning the ground set $[n]$ into two sets $A$ and $B$ with almost equal sizes and taking the family consisting of all the proper supersets of $A$ and of $B$.

On the chromatic number of a family of odd hole free graphs
A hole is an induced cycle of length at least 4, and an odd hole is a hole of odd length. A full house is a graph composed by a vertex adjacent to both ends of an edge in $K_4$ . Let $H$ be the complement of a cycle on 7 vertices. Chudnovsky et al [6] proved that every (odd hole, $K_4$)-free graph is 4-colorable and is 3-colorable if it does not has $H$ as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we use the proving technique of Chudnovsky et al to generalize this conclusion to (odd hole, full house)-free graphs, and prove that for (odd hole, full house)-free graph $G$, $χ(G)\le ω(G)+1$, and the equality holds if and only if $ω(G)=3$ and $G$ has $H$ as an induced subgraph.

Semi-toric degenerations of Richardson varieties arising from cluster structures on flag varieties
A toric degeneration of an irreducible variety is a flat degeneration to an irreducible toric variety. In the case of a flag variety, its toric degeneration with desirable properties induces degenerations of Richardson varieties to unions of irreducible closed toric subvarieties, called semi-toric degenerations. For instance, Morier-Genoud proved that Caldero's toric degenerations arising from string polytopes have this property. Semi-toric degenerations are closely related to Schubert calculus. Indeed, Kogan-Miller constructed semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties from Knutson-Miller's semi-toric degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties which give a geometric proof of the pipe dream formula of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we focus on a toric degeneration of a flag variety arising from a cluster structure, and prove that it induces semi-toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. Our semi-toric degeneration can be regarded as a generalization of Morier-Genoud's and Kogan-Miller's semi-toric degenerations.

Saturated $2$-planar drawings with few edges
Published in Ars Math. Contemp. 24 (2024), #1.05 • View Publication • BIB
A drawing of a graph is $k$-plane if every edge contains at most $k$ crossings. A $k$-plane drawing is saturated if we cannot add any edge so that the drawing remains $k$-plane. It is well-known that saturated $0$-plane drawings, that is, maximal plane graphs, of $n$ vertices have exactly $3n-6$ edges. For $k>0$, the number of edges of saturated $n$-vertex $k$-plane graphs can take many different values. In this note, we establish some bounds on the minimum number of edges of saturated $2$-plane graphs under different conditions. If two edges can cross at most once, then such a graph has at least $n-1$ edges. If two edges can cross many times, then we show the tight bound of $\lfloor2n/3\rfloor$ for the number of edges.

Packing Strong Subgraph in Digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study two types of strong subgraph packing problems in digraphs, including internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. These problems can be viewed as generalizations of the famous Steiner tree packing problem and are closely related to the strong arc decomposition problem. We first prove the NP-completeness for the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to symmetric digraphs and Eulerian digraphs. Then we get inapproximability results for the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. Finally we study the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to digraph compositions and obtain some algorithmic results by utilizing the structural properties.
Enumeration of non-oriented maps via integrability
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 6, pp. 1363-1390 • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we examine how the BKP structure of the generating series of several models of maps on non-oriented surfaces can be used to obtain explicit and/or efficient recurrence formulas for their enumeration according to the genus and size parameters. Using techniques already known in the orientable case (elimination of variables via Virasoro constraints or Tutte equations), we naturally obtain recurrence formulas with non-polynomial coefficients. This non-polynomiality reflects the presence of shifts of the charge parameter in the BKP equation. Nevertheless, we show that it is possible to obtain non-shifted versions, meaning pure ODEs for the associated generating functions, from which recurrence relations with polynomial coefficients can be extracted. We treat the cases of triangulations, general maps, and bipartite maps. These recurrences with polynomial coefficients are conceptually interesting but bigger to write than those with non-polynomial coefficients. However they are relatively nice-looking in the case of one-face maps. In particular we show that Ledoux's recurrence for non-oriented one-face maps can be recovered in this way, and we obtain the analogous statement for the (bivariate) bipartite case.
