Extending simplicial complexes: Topological and combinatorial properties
Given an arbitrary hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, we may glue to $\mathcal{H}$ a family of hypergraphs to get a new hypergraph $\mathcal{H}'$ having $\mathcal{H}$ as an induced subhypergraph. In this paper, we introduce three gluing techniques for which the topological and combinatorial properties (such as Cohen-Macaulayness, shellability, vertex-decomposability etc.) of the resulting hypergraph $\mathcal{H}'$ is under control in terms of the glued components. This enables us to construct broad classes of simplicial complexes containing a given simplicial complex as induced subcomplex satisfying nice topological and combinatorial properties. Our results will be accompanied with some interesting open problems.
Symmetric properties and two variants of shuffle-cubes
Li et al. in [Inf. Process. Lett. 77 (2001) 35--41] proposed the shuffle cube $SQ_{n}$ as an attractive interconnection network topology for massive parallel and distributed systems. By far, symmetric properties of the shuffle cube remains unknown. In this paper, we show that $SQ_{n}$ is not vertex-transitive for all $n>2$, which is not an appealing property in interconnection networks. To overcome this limitation, two novel vertex-transitive variants of the shuffle-cube, namely simplified shuffle-cube $SSQ_{n}$ and balanced shuffle cube $BSQ_{n}$ are introduced. Then, routing algorithms of $SSQ_{n}$ and $BSQ_{n}$ for all $n>2$ are given respectively. Furthermore, we show that both $SSQ_{n}$ and $BSQ_{n}$ possess Hamiltonian cycle embedding for all $n>2$. Finally, as a by-product, we mend a flaw in the Property 3 in [IEEE Trans. Comput. 46 (1997) 484--490].

In the 7-vertex triangulation of the torus, the 14 triangles can be partitioned as $T_{1} \sqcup T_{2}$, such that each $T_{i}$ represents the lines of a copy of the Fano plane $PG(2, \mathbb{F}_{2})$. We generalize this observation by constructing, for each prime power $q$, a simplicial complex $X_{q}$ with $q^{2} + q + 1$ vertices and $2(q^{2} + q + 1)$ facets consisting of two copies of $PG(2, \mathbb{F}_{q})$.
Our construction works for any colored $k$-configuration, defined as a $k$-configuration whose associated bipartite graph $G$ is connected and has a $k$-edge coloring $χ\colon E(G) \to [k]$, such that for all $v \in V(G)$, $a, b, c \in [k]$, following edges of colors $a, b, c, a, b, c$ from $v$ brings us back to $v$. We give one-to-one correspondences between (1) Sidon sets of order 2 and size $k + 1$ in groups with order $n$, (2) linear codes with radius 1 and index $n$ in the lattice $A_{k}$, and (3) colored $(k + 1)$-configurations with $n$ points and $n$ lines. (The correspondence between (1) and (2) is known.) As a result, we suggest possible topological obstructions to the existence of Sidon sets, and in particular, planar difference sets.
On the Ehrhart Polynomial of Schubert Matroids

In this paper, we give a formula for the number of lattice points in the dilations of Schubert matroid polytopes. As applications, we obtain the Ehrhart polynomials of uniform and minimal matroids as special cases, and give a recursive formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids. Ferroni showed that uniform and minimal matroids are Ehrhart positive. We show that all sparse paving Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive and their Ehrhart polynomials are coefficient-wisely bounded by those of minimal and uniform matroids. This confirms a conjecture of Ferroni for the case of sparse paving Schubert matroids. Furthermore, we introduce notched rectangle matroids, which include minimal matroids, sparse paving Schubert matroids and panhandle matroids. We show that three subfamilies of notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive, and conjecture that all notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive.
Monotone edge flips to an orientation of maximum edge-connectivity à la Nash-Williams

We initiate the study of $k$-edge-connected orientations of undirected graphs through edge flips for $k \geq 2$. We prove that in every orientation of an undirected $2k$-edge-connected graph, there exists a sequence of edges such that flipping their directions one by one does not decrease the edge-connectivity, and the final orientation is $k$-edge-connected. This yields an ``edge-flip based'' new proof of Nash-Williams' theorem: an undirected graph $G$ has a $k$-edge-connected orientation if and only if $G$ is $2k$-edge-connected. As another consequence of the theorem, we prove that the edge-flip graph of $k$-edge-connected orientations of an undirected graph $G$ is connected if $G$ is $(2k+2)$-edge-connected. This has been known to be true only when $k=1$.
The Alon-Tarsi number of Halin graphs
The Alon-Tarsi number of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ for which there is an orientation $D$ of $G$ with max outdegree $k-1$ such that the number of Eulerian subgraphs of $G$ with an even number of edges differs from the number of Eulerian subgraphs with an odd number of edges. In this paper, we obtain the Alon-Tarsi number of a Halin graph equals 4 when it is a wheel of even order and 3 otherwise.

A small polygon is a polygon of unit diameter. The maximal area of a small polygon with $n=2m$ vertices is not known when $m \ge 7$. In this paper, we construct, for each $n=2m$ and $m\ge 3$, a small $n$-gon whose area is the maximal value of a one-variable function. We show that, for all even $n\ge 6$, the area obtained improves by $O(1/n^5)$ that of the best prior small $n$-gon constructed by Mossinghoff. In particular, for $n=6$, the small $6$-gon constructed has maximal area.

Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ a standard polynomial ring over $K$. In this paper, some new optimized algorithms to compute the smallest $t$-spread lexicographic set and the smallest $t$-spread strongly stable set containing a given set of $t$-spread monomials of $S$ are presented. Some technical tools allowing to compute the cardinality of $t$-spread strongly stable sets avoiding their construction are given. Then, a \emph{Macaulay2} package, \texttt{TSpreadIdeals}, providing methods to easily manage $t$-spread monomials and $t$-spread ideals is implemented. Some functions to ease the calculation of well known results about algebraic invariants for $t$-spread ideals are also provided.
Node-based Generalized Friendship Paradox fails

The Friendship Paradox--the principle that "your friends have more friends than you do"--is a combinatorial fact about degrees in a graph; but given that many web-based social activities are correlated with a user's degree, this fact has been taken more broadly to suggest the empirical principle that "your friends are also more active than you are." This Generalized Friendship Paradox, the notion that any attribute positively correlated with degree obeys the Friendship Paradox, has been established mathematically in a network-level version that essentially aggregates uniformly over all the edges of a network. Here we show, however, that the natural node-based version of the Generalized Friendship Paradox--which aggregates over nodes, not edges--may fail, even for degree-attribute correlations approaching 1. Whether this version holds depends not only on degree-attribute correlations, but also on the underlying network structure and thus can't be said to be a universal phenomenon. We establish both positive and negative results for this node-based version of the Generalized Friendship Paradox and consider its implications for social-network data.

In this note, we study two generalizations of the Catalan numbers, namely the $s$-Catalan numbers and the spin $s$-Catalan numbers. These numbers first appeared in relation to quantum physics problems about spin multiplicities. We give a combinatorial description for these numbers in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and explain some of the properties they exhibit in terms of Littlewood-Richardson polynomials.

The positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ is the subset of the real Grassmannian where all Plücker coordinates are nonnegative. It has a beautiful combinatorial structure as well as connections to statistical physics, integrable systems, and scattering amplitudes. The amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is the image of the positive Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}^{\geq 0}$ under a positive linear map $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^{k+m}$. We will explain how ideas from oriented matroids, tropical geometry, and cluster algebras shed light on the structure of the positive Grassmannian and the amplituhedron.

This paper deals with three graph characteristics related to graph covering named the (vertex, edge, and total, resp.) H-irregularity strength of a graph G admitting H-covering. Those are the minimum values of positive integer k such that G has an H-irregular (vertex, edge, and total, resp.) k-labeling. The exact values of these three characteristics are determined for grid graph admitting grid-covering

We obtain limit shape of perfect matchings on a large class of rail-yard graphs with right boundary condition given by the empty partition, and left boundary condition given by either by a staircase partition with constant density or a piecewise partition with densities either 1 or 0. We prove the parametric equations for the frozen boundary, and find conditions under which the frozen boundary is a cloud curve, or a union of disjoint cloud curves.
On the typical structure of graphs not containing a fixed vertex-critical subgraph

This work studies the typical structure of sparse $H$-free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain a subgraph isomorphic to a given graph $H$. Extending the seminal result of Osthus, Prömel, and Taraz that addressed the case where $H$ is an odd cycle, Balogh, Morris, Samotij, and Warnke proved that, for every $r \ge 3$, the structure of a random $K_{r+1}$-free graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges undergoes a phase transition when $m$ crosses an explicit (sharp) threshold function $m_r(n)$. They conjectured that a similar threshold phenomenon occurs when $K_{r+1}$ is replaced by any strictly $2$-balanced, edge-critical graph $H$. In this paper, we resolve this conjecture. In fact, we prove that the structure of a typical $H$-free graph undergoes an analogous phase transition for every $H$ in a family of vertex-critical graphs that includes all edge-critical graphs.

In \cite{M18}, the first author gave a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs on the additive group of finite fields by using three-valued Gauss periods. In particular, together with the result in \cite{BLMX}, it was shown that there exists a strongly regular Cayley graph with negative Latin square type parameters $(q^6,r(q^3+1),-q^3+r^2+3r,r^2+r)$, where $r=M(q^2-1)/2$, in the following cases: (i) $M=1$ and $q\equiv 3\,(\mod{4})$; (ii) $M=3$ and $q\equiv 7\,(\mod{24})$; and (iii) $M=7$ and $q\equiv 11,51\,(\mod{56})$. The existence of strongly regular Cayley graphs with the above parameters for odd $M>7$ was left open. In this paper, we prove that if there is an $h$, $1\le h\le M-1$, such that $M\,|\,(h^2+h+1)$ and the order of $2$ in $({\bf Z}/M{\bf Z})^\times$ is odd, then there exist infinitely many primes $q$ such that strongly regular Cayley graphs with the aforementioned parameters exist.
Orchard Networks are Trees with Additional Horizontal Arcs

Phylogenetic networks are used in biology to represent evolutionary histories. The class of orchard phylogenetic networks was recently introduced for their computational benefits, without any biological justification. Here, we show that orchard networks can be interpreted as trees with additional \emph{horizontal} arcs. Therefore, they are closely related to tree-based networks, where the difference is that in tree-based networks the additional arcs do not need to be horizontal. Then, we use this new characterization to show that the space of orchard networks is connected under the rNNI rearrangement move, with a diameter of at most $4kn+n\lceil \log_2(n) \rceil +2k+6n-8$.
On reductive subgroups of reductive groups having invariants in almost all representations
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be connected complex reductive Lie groups, $G$ semisimple. Let $Λ^+$ be the monoid of dominant weights for a positive root system $Δ^+$, and let $l(w)$ be the length of a Weyl group element $w$. Let $V_λ$ denote an irreducible $G$-module of highest weight $λ\inΛ^+$. For any closed embedding $ι:\tilde G\subset G$, we consider
Property (A): $\quad\forallλ\inΛ^+,\exists q\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $V_{qλ}^{\tilde G}\ne0$.
A necessary condition for (A) is for $G$ to have no simple factors to which $G$ projects surjectively. We show that this condition is sufficient if $\tilde G$ is of type ${\bf A}_1$ or ${\bf E}_8$.
We define and study an integral invariant of a root system, $\ell_G=\min\{\ell^λ:λ\inΛ^+\setminus\{0\}\}$, where $\ell^λ=\min\{l(w):wλ\notin{\rm Cone}(Δ^+)\}$. We derive the following sufficient condition for (A), independent of $ι$: $$ \ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; (A). $$ We compute $\ell_G$ and related data for all simple $G$, except ${\bf E}_8$, where we obtain lower and upper bounds. We consider a stronger property (A-$k$) defined in terms of Geometric Invariant Theory, related to extreme values of codimensions of unstable loci, and derive a sufficient condition in the form $\ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > k$. The invariant $\ell_G$ proves too week to handle $G=SL_n$ and we employ a companion $\ell_G^{\rm sd}$ to infer (A-$k$) for a larger class of subgroups. We derive corollaries on Mori-theoretic properties of GIT-quotients.
Word Measures on $GL_N(q)$ and Free Group Algebras

Fix a finite field $K$ of order $q$ and a word $w$ in a free group $F$ on $r$ generators. A $w$-random element in $GL_N(K)$ is obtained by sampling $r$ independent uniformly random elements $g_1,\ldots,g_r\in GL_N(K)$ and evaluating $w\left(g_1,\ldots,g_r\right)$. Consider $\mathbb{E}_w\left[\mathrm{fix}\right]$, the average number of vectors in $K^{N}$ fixed by a $w$-random element. We show that $\mathbb{E}_{w}\left[\mathrm{fix}\right]$ is a rational function in $q^{N}$. Moreover, if $w=u^{d}$ with $u$ a non-power, then the limit $\lim_{N\to\infty}\mathbb{E}_{w}\left[\mathrm{fix}\right]$ depends only on $d$ and not on $u$. These two phenomena generalize to all stable characters of the groups $\left\{ GL_N(K)\right\}_{N}$.
A main feature of this work is the connection we establish between word measures on $GL_N(K)$ and the free group algebra $K\left[F\right]$. A classical result of Cohn [1964] and Lewin [1969] is that every one-sided ideal of $K\left[F\right]$ is a free $K\left[F\right]$-module with a well-defined rank. We show that for $w$ a non-power, $\mathbb{E}_{w}\left[\mathrm{fix}\right]=2+\frac{C}{q^{N}}+O\left(\frac{1}{q^{2N}}\right)$, where $C$ is the number of rank-2 right ideals $I\le K\left[F\right]$ which contain $w-1$ but not as a basis element. We describe a full conjectural picture generalizing this result, featuring a new invariant we call the $q$-primitivity rank of $w$.
In the process, we prove several new results about free group algebras. For example, we show that if $T$ is any finite subtree of the Cayley graph of $F$, and $I\le K\left[F\right]$ is a right ideal with a generating set supported on $T$, then $I$ admits a basis supported on $T$. We also prove an analogue of Kaplansky's unit conjecture for certain $K\left[F\right]$-modules.
Pattern-functions, statistics, and shallow permutations

We study relationships between permutation statistics and pattern-functions, counting the number of times particular patterns occur in a permutation. This allows us to write several familiar statistics as linear combinations of pattern counts, both in terms of a permutation and in terms of its image under the fundamental bijection. We use these enumerations to resolve the question of characterizing so-called "shallow" permutations, whose depth (equivalently, disarray/displacement) is minimal with respect to length and reflection length. We present this characterization in several ways, including vincular patterns, mesh patterns, and a new object that we call "arrow patterns." Furthermore, we specialize to characterizing and enumerating shallow involutions and shallow cycles, encountering the Motzkin and large Schröder numbers, respectively.
Eventual log-concavity of $k$-rank statistics for integer partitions

Let $N_k(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with Garvan $k$-rank $m$. It is well-known that Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank are the $k$-rank for $k=1$ and $k=2$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that the sequence $\{N_k(m,n)\}_{|m|\le n-k-71}$ is log-concave for all sufficiently large $n$ and each integer $k$. In particular, we partially solve the log-concavity conjecture for Andrews-Garvan-Dyson's crank and Dyson's rank, which was independently proposed by Bringmann-Jennings-Shaffer-Mahlburg and Ji-Zang.
