Schubert Products for Permutations with Separated Descents
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2022; rnac299 • View Publication • BIB
We say that two permutations $π$ and $ρ$ have separated descents at position $k$ if $π$ has no descents before position $k$ and $ρ$ has no descents after position $k$. We give a counting formula, in terms of reduced word tableaux, for computing the structure constants of products of Schubert polynomials indexed by permutations with separated descents, and recognize that these structure constants are certain Edelman-Greene coefficients. Our approach uses generalizations of Schützenberger's jeu de taquin algorithm and the Edelman-Greene correspondence via bumpless pipe dreams.

Independence equivalence classes of paths
Published in Discrete Math. (2023) 346(1), 113143 • View Publication • BIB
The independence equivalence class of a graph $G$ is the set of graphs that have the same independence polynomial as $G$. A graph whose independence equivalence class contains only itself, up to isomorphism, is independence unique. Beaton, Brown and Cameron (2019) showed that paths with an odd number of vertices are independence unique and raised the problem of finding the independence equivalence class of paths with an even number of vertices. The problem is completely solved in this paper.

Almost Envy-Freeness for Groups: Improved Bounds via Discrepancy Theory
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, 930:179-195 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We study the allocation of indivisible goods among groups of agents using well-known fairness notions such as envy-freeness and proportionality. While these notions cannot always be satisfied, we provide several bounds on the optimal relaxations that can be guaranteed. For instance, our bounds imply that when the number of groups is constant and the $n$ agents are divided into groups arbitrarily, there exists an allocation that is envy-free up to $Θ(\sqrt{n})$ goods, and this bound is tight. Moreover, we show that while such an allocation can be found efficiently, it is NP-hard to compute an allocation that is envy-free up to $o(\sqrt{n})$ goods even when a fully envy-free allocation exists. Our proofs make extensive use of tools from discrepancy theory.

2-distance list $(Δ+ 3)$-coloring of sparse graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A 2-distance list k-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring of the vertices where each vertex has a list of at least k available colors and vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a 2-distance list $(Δ+ 3)$-coloring for graphs with maximum average degree less than $\frac83$ and maximum degree $Δ\geq 4$ as well as graphs with maximum average degree less than $\frac{14}5$ and maximum degree $Δ\geq 6$.

Categorifications of rational Hilbert series and characters of $FS^{op}$ modules
Published in Alg. Number Th. 16 (2022) 2433-2491 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a method for associating a chain complex to a module over a combinatorial category, such that if the complex is exact then the module has a rational Hilbert series. We prove homology--vanishing theorems for these complexes for several combinatorial categories including: the category of finite sets and injections, the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, and the category of finite dimensional vector spaces over a finite field and injections. Our main applications are to modules over the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, known as $FS^{op}$ modules. We obtain many constraints on the sequence of symmetric group representations underlying a finitely generated $FS^{op}$ module. In particular, we describe its character in terms of functions that we call character exponentials. Our results have new consequences for the character of the homology of the moduli space of stable marked curves, and for the equivariant Kazhdan-Luzstig polynomial of the braid matroid.

Spanners in randomly weighted graphs: independent edge lengths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ and a length function $\ell:E\to {\mathbb R}$ we let $d_{v,w}$ denote the shortest distance between vertex $v$ and vertex $w$. A $t$-spanner is a subset $E'\subseteq E$ such that if $d'_{v,w}$ denotes shortest distances in the subgraph $G'=(V,E')$ then $d'_{v,w}\leq t d_{v,w}$ for all $v,w\in V$. We show that for a large class of graphs with suitable degree and expansion properties with independent exponential mean one edge lengths, there is w.h.p.~a 1-spanner that uses $\approx \frac12n\log n$ edges and that this is best possible. In particular, our result applies to the random graphs $G_{n,p}$ for $np\gg \log n$.

On the $k$-measure of partitions and distinct partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-measure of an integer partition was recently introduced by Andrews, Bhattacharjee and Dastidar. In this paper, we establish trivariate generating function identities counting both the length and the $k$-measure for partitions and distinct partitions, respectively. The $2$-measure case for partitions extends a result of Andrews, Bhattacharjee and Dastidar.

Approximation schemes for bounded distance problems on fractionally treewidth-fragile graphs
We give polynomial-time approximation schemes for monotone maximization problems expressible in terms of distances (up to a fixed upper bound) and efficiently solvable in graphs of bounded treewidth. These schemes apply in all fractionally treewidth-fragile graph classes, a property that is true for many natural graph classes with sublinear separators. We also provide quasipolynomial-time approximation schemes for these problems in all classes with sublinear separators.
Sampling Colorings and Independent Sets of Random Regular Bipartite Graphs in the Non-Uniqueness Region
Published • View Publication • BIB
For spin systems, such as the $q$-colorings and independent-set models, approximating the partition function in the so-called non-uniqueness region, where the model exhibits long-range correlations, is typically computationally hard for bounded-degree graphs. We present new algorithmic results for approximating the partition function and sampling from the Gibbs distribution for spin systems in the non-uniqueness region on random regular bipartite graphs. We give an $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ for counting $q$-colorings for even $q=O\big(\tfracΔ{\logΔ}\big)$ on almost every $Δ$-regular bipartite graph. This is within a factor $O(\logΔ)$ of the sampling algorithm for general graphs in the uniqueness region and improves significantly upon the previous best bound of $q=O\big(\tfrac{\sqrtΔ}{(\logΔ)^2}\big)$ by Jenssen, Keevash, and Perkins (SODA'19). Analogously, for the hard-core model on independent sets weighted by $λ>0$, we present an $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ for estimating the partition function when $λ=Ω\big(\tfrac{\logΔ}Δ\big)$, which improves upon previous results by an $Ω(\log Δ)$ factor. Our results for the colorings and hard-core models follow from a general result that applies to arbitrary spin systems. Our main contribution is to show how to elevate probabilistic/analytic bounds on the marginal probabilities for the typical structure of phases on random bipartite regular graphs into efficient algorithms, using the polymer method. We further show evidence that our result for colorings is within a constant factor of best possible using current polymer-method approaches.

Complexity dichotomy for List-5-Coloring with a forbidden induced subgraph
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 36, Issue 3, 2022, 2004 -- 2027 • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $r$ and graphs $G$ and $H$, we denote by $G+H$ the disjoint union of $G$ and $H$, and by $rH$ the union of $r$ mutually disjoint copies of $H$. Also, we say $G$ is $H$-free if $H$ is not isomorphic to an induced subgraph of $G$. We use $P_t$ to denote the path on $t$ vertices. For a fixed positive integer $k$, the List-$k$-Coloring Problem is to decide, given a graph $G$ and a list $L(v)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ of colors assigned to each vertex $v$ of $G$, whether $G$ admits a proper coloring $φ$ with $φ(v)\in L(v)$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$, and the $k$-Coloring Problem is the List-$k$-Coloring Problem restricted to instances with $L(v)=\{1,\ldots, k\}$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$. We prove that for every positive integer $r$, the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $rP_3$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time. Together with known results, this gives a complete dichotomy for the complexity of the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs: For every graph $H$, assuming P$\neq$NP, the List-$5$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time if and only if $H$ is an induced subgraph of either $rP_3$ or $P_5+rP_1$ for some positive integer $r$. As a hardness counterpart, we also show that the $k$-Coloring Problem restricted to $rP_4$-free graphs is NP-complete for all $k\geq 5$ and $r\geq 2$.

Shifted Hankel determinants of Catalan numbers and related results
In this (partly expository) paper we give a short overview about the close relationship between the sequence of Catalan numbers and Hankel determinants from the point of view of orthogonal polynomials and show that an analogous situation exists for more general sequences.

A generalization of a theorem of Erné
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $X$ be a finite set, $Z \subseteq X$ and $y \notin X$. Marcel Erné showed in 1981, that the number of posets on $X$ containing $Z$ as an antichain equals the number of posets $R$ on $X \cup \{ y \}$ in which the points of $Z \cup \{ y \}$ are exactly the maximal points of $R$. We prove the following generalization: For every poset $Q$ with carrier $Z$, the number of posets on $X$ containing $Q$ as an induced sub-poset equals the number of posets $R$ on $X \cup \{ y \}$ which contain $Q^d + A_y$ as an induced sub-poset and in which the maximal points of $Q^d + A_y$ are exactly the maximal points of $R$. Here, $Q^d$ is the dual of $Q$, $A_y$ is the singleton-poset on $y$, and $Q^d + A_y$ denotes the direct sum of $Q^d$ and $A_y$.

Measuring tree balance using symmetry nodes -- a new balance index and its extremal properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
Effects like selection in evolution as well as fertility inheritance in the development of populations can lead to a higher degree of asymmetry in evolutionary trees than expected under a null hypothesis. To identify and quantify such influences, various balance indices were proposed in the phylogenetic literature and have been in use for decades. However, so far no balance index was based on the number of \emph{symmetry nodes}, even though symmetry nodes play an important role in other areas of mathematical phylogenetics and despite the fact that symmetry nodes are a quite natural way to measure balance or symmetry of a given tree. The aim of this manuscript is thus twofold: First, we will introduce the \emph{symmetry nodes index} as an index for measuring balance of phylogenetic trees and analyze its extremal properties. We also show that this index can be calculated in linear time. This new index turns out to be a generalization of a simple and well-known balance index, namely the \emph{cherry index}, as well as a specialization of another, less established, balance index, namely \emph{Rogers' $J$ index}. Thus, it is the second objective of the present manuscript to compare the new symmetry nodes index to these two indices and to underline its advantages. In order to do so, we will derive some extremal properties of the cherry index and Rogers' $J$ index along the way and thus complement existing studies on these indices. Moreover, we used the programming language \textsf{R} to implement all three indices in the software package \textsf{symmeTree}, which has been made publicly available.

Pattern Complexity of Aperiodic Substitutive Subshifts
This paper aims to better understand the link better understand the links between aperiodicity in subshifts and pattern complexity. Our main contribution deals with substitutive subshifts, an equivalent to substitutive tilings in the context of symbolic dynamics. For a class of substitutive subshifts, we prove a quadratic lower bound on their pattern complexity. Together with an already known upper bound, this shows that this class of substitutive subshifts has a pattern complexity in $Θ(n^2)$. We also prove that the recent bound of Kari and Moutot, showing that any aperiodic subshift has pattern complexity at least $mn+1$, is optimal for fixed $m$ and $n$.

Root polytopes and Jaeger-type dissections for directed graphs
Published in Mathematika 68 (2022), no. 4, 1176--1220 • View Publication • BIB
We associate root polytopes to directed graphs and study them by using ribbon structures. Most attention is paid to what we call the semi-balanced case, i.e., when each cycle has the same number of edges pointing in the two directions. Given a ribbon structure, we identify a natural class of spanning trees and show that, in the semi-balanced case, they induce a shellable dissection of the root polytope into maximal simplices. This allows for a computation of the $h^*$-vector of the polytope and for showing some properties of this new graph invariant, such as a product formula and that in the planar case, the $h^*$-vector is equivalent to the greedoid polynomial of the dual graph. We obtain a general recursion relation as well. We also work out the case of layer-complete directed graphs, where our method recovers a previously known triangulation. Indeed our dissection is often but not always a triangulation; we address this with a series of examples.
Enumeration of parallelogram polycubes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we enumerate parallelogram polycubes according to several parameters. After establishing a relation between Multiple Zeta Function and the Dirichlet generating function of parallelogram polyominoes, we generalize it to the case of parallelogram polycubes. We also give an explicit formula and an ordinary generating function of parallelogram polycubes according to the width, length and depth, by characterizing its projections. Then, these results are generalized to polyhypercubes.

An extension of Bravyi-Smolin's construction for UMEBs
Published in Quantum Inf Process 20, 369 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We extend Bravyi and Smolin's construction for obtaining unextendible maximally entangled bases (UMEBs) from equiangular lines. We show that equiangular real projections of rank more than 1 also exhibit examples of UMEBs. These projections arise in the context of optimal subspace packing in Grassmannian spaces. This generalization yields new examples of UMEBs in infinitely many dimensions of the underlying system. Consequently, we find a set of orthogonal unitary bases for symmetric subspaces of matrices in odd dimensions. This finding validates a recent conjecture about the mixed unitary rank of the symmetric Werner-Holevo channel in infinitely many dimensions.
Growable Realizations: a Powerful Approach to the Buratti-Horak-Rosa Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Label the vertices of the complete graph $K_v$ with the integers $\{ 0, 1, \ldots, v-1 \}$ and define the length of the edge between $x$ and $y$ to be $\min( |x-y| , v - |x-y| )$. Let $L$ be a multiset of size $v-1$ with underlying set contained in $\{ 1, \ldots, \lfloor v/2 \rfloor \}$. The Buratti-Horak-Rosa Conjecture is that there is a Hamiltonian path in $K_v$ whose edge lengths are exactly $L$ if and only if for any divisor $d$ of $v$ the number of multiples of $d$ appearing in $L$ is at most $v-d$. We introduce "growable realizations," which enable us to prove many new instances of the conjecture and to reprove known results in a simpler way. As examples of the new method, we give a complete solution when the underlying set is contained in $\{ 1,4,5 \}$ or in $\{ 1,2,3,4 \}$ and a partial result when the underlying set has the form $\{ 1, x, 2x \}$. We believe that for any set $U$ of positive integers there is a finite set of growable realizations that implies the truth of the Buratti-Horak-Rosa Conjecture for all but finitely many multisets with underlying set $U$.

On 13-Crossing-Critical Graphs with Arbitrarily Large Degrees
A recent result of Bokal et al. [Combinatorica, 2022] proved that the exact minimum value of c such that c-crossing-critical graphs do not have bounded maximum degree is c=13. The key to that result is an inductive construction of a family of 13-crossing-critical graphs with many vertices of arbitrarily high degrees. While the inductive part of the construction is rather easy, it all relies on the fact that a certain 17-vertex base graph has the crossing number 13, which was originally verified only by a machine-readable computer proof. We provide a relatively short self-contained computer-free proof of the latter fact. Furthermore, we subsequently generalize the critical construction in order to provide a definitive answer to a remaining open question of this research area; we prove that for every c>=13 and integers d,q, there exists a c-crossing-critical graph with more than q vertices of each of the degrees 3,4,...,d.
