$K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs with small spectral radius
For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $H$ as a subgraph but for any $e \in E(\overline{G})$, $G+e$ contains $H$. In this note, we prove a sharp lower bound for the number of paths and walks on length $2$ in $n$-vertex $K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs. We then use this bound to give a lower bound on the spectral radii of such graphs which is asymptotically tight for each fixed $r$ and $n\to\infty$.

Dirac-type theorems in random hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For positive integers $d<k$ and $n$ divisible by $k$, let $m_{d}(k,n)$ be the minimum $d$-degree ensuring the existence of a perfect matching in a $k$-uniform hypergraph. In the graph case (where $k=2$), a classical theorem of Dirac says that $m_{1}(2,n)=\lceil n/2\rceil$. However, in general, our understanding of the values of $m_{d}(k,n)$ is still very limited, and it is an active topic of research to determine or approximate these values. In this paper we prove a "transference" theorem for Dirac-type results relative to random hypergraphs. Specifically, for any $d< k$, any $\varepsilon>0$ and any "not too small" $p$, we prove that a random $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $n$ vertices and edge probability $p$ typically has the property that every spanning subgraph of $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1+\varepsilon)m_{d}(k,n)p$ has a perfect matching. One interesting aspect of our proof is a "non-constructive" application of the absorbing method, which allows us to prove a bound in terms of $m_{d}(k,n)$ without actually knowing its value.

Flexibility of planar graphs without $C_4$ and $C_5$

Let $G$ be a $\{C_4, C_5\}$-free planar graph with a list assignment $L$. Suppose a preferred color is given for some of the vertices. We prove that if all lists have size at least four, then there exists an $L$-coloring respecting at least a constant fraction of the preferences.
The Ramsey property for Operator spaces and noncommutative Choquet simplices
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 281 (2021), no. 9, Paper No. 109192, 39 pp • View Publication • BIB
The noncommutative Gurarij space $\mathbb{\mathbb{\mathbb{NG}}}$, initially defined by Oikhberg, is a canonical object in the theory of operator spaces. As the Fraïssé limit of the class of finite-dimensional nuclear operator spaces, it can be seen as the noncommutative analogue of the classical Gurarij Banach space. In this paper, we prove that the automorphism group of $\mathbb{\mathbb{NG}}$ is extremely amenable, i.e.\ any of its actions on compact spaces has a fixed point. The proof relies on the Dual Ramsey Theorem, and a version of the Kechris--Pestov--Todorcevic correspondence in the setting of operator spaces. Recent work of Davidson and Kennedy, building on previous work of Arveson, Effros, Farenick, Webster, and Winkler, among others, shows that nuclear operator systems can be seen as the noncommutative analogue of Choquet simplices. The analogue of the Poulsen simplex in this context is the matrix state space $\mathbb{NP}$ of the Fraïssé limit $A(\mathbb{NP})$ of the class of finite-dimensional nuclear operator systems. We show that the canonical action of the automorphism group of $\mathbb{NP}$ on the compact set $\mathbb{NP}_1$ of unital linear functionals on $A(\mathbb{NP})$ is minimal and it factors onto any minimal action, whence providing a description of the universal minimal flow of \textrm{Aut}$\left( \mathbb{NP}% \right) $.

Point-Line Geometry in the Tropical Plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the classical result by Bruijn and Erd\H os regarding the bound on the number of lines determined by a $n$-point configuration in the plane, and in the light of the recently proven Tropical Sylvester-Gallai theorem, come up with a tropical version of the above-mentioned result. In this work, we introduce stable tropical lines, which help in answering questions pertaining to incidence geometry in the tropical plane. Projective duality in the tropical plane helps in translating the question for stable lines to stable intersections that have been previously studied in depth. Invoking duality between Newton subdivisions and line arrangements, we are able to classify stable intersections with shapes of cells in subdivisions, and this ultimately helps us in coming up with a bound. In this process, we also encounter various unique properties of linear Newton subdivisions which are dual to tropical line arrangements.

Mirror symmetry for quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a $d$-dimensional well-formed weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ as a toric variety associated with a fan $Σ(\overline{w})$ in $N_{\overline{w}} \otimes \mathbb{N}$ whose $1$-dimensional cones are spanned by primitive vectors $v_0, v_1, \ldots, v_d \in N_{\overline{w}}$ generating a lattice $N_{\overline{w}}$ and satisfying the linear relation $\sum_i w_i v_i =0$. For any fixed dimension $d$, there exist only finitely many weight vectors $\overline{w} = (w_0, \ldots, w_d)$ such that $\mathbb{P}(\overline{w})$ contains a quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ defined by a transverse weighted homogeneous polynomial $W$ of degree $w = \sum_{i=0}^d w_i$. Using a formula of Vafa for the orbifold Euler number $χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$, we show that for any quasi-smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface $X_w$ the number $(-1)^{d-1}χ_{\rm orb}(X_w)$ equals the stringy Euler number $χ_{\rm str}(X_{\overline{w}}^*)$ of Calabi-Yau compactifications $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ of affine toric hypersurfaces $Z_{\overline{w}}$ defined by non-degenerate Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}} \in \mathbb{C}[N_{\overline{w}}]$ with Newton polytope $\text{conv}(\{v_0, \ldots, v_d\})$. In the moduli space of Laurent polynomials $f_{\overline{w}}$ there always exists a special point $f_{\overline{w}}^0$ defining a mirror $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ with a $\mathbb{Z}/w\mathbb{Z}$-symmetry group such that $X_{\overline{w}}^*$ is birational to a quotient of a Fermat hypersurface via a Shioda map.

On the number of $k$-compositions of $n$ satisfying certain coprimality conditions
Published in Acta Math. Hungar. 164 (1) (2021), 135-156 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the asymptotic estimates by Bubboloni, Luca and Spiga (2012) on the number of $k$-compositions of $n$ satisfying some coprimality conditions. We substantially refine the error term concerning the number of $k$-compositions of $n$ with pairwise relatively prime summands. We use a different approach, based on properties of multiplicative arithmetic functions of $k$ variables and on an asymptotic formula for the restricted partition function.

Characterisation of the parameters of maximum weight spectrum codes according to their spread
We introduce the concept of spread of a code, and we specialize it to the case of maximum weight spectrum (MWS) codes. We classify two newly-defined sub-families of MWS codes according to their weight distributions, and completely describe their fundamental parameters. We focus on one of these families, the strictly compact MWS codes, proving their optimality as MWS codes and linking them to known codes.

Countable homogeneous Steiner triple systems avoiding specified subsystems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we construct uncountably many new homogeneous locally finite Steiner triple systems of countably infinite order as Fraïssé limits of classes of finite Steiner triple systems avoiding certain subsystems. The construction relies on a new embedding result: any finite partial Steiner triple system has an embedding into a finite Steiner triple system that contains no nontrivial proper subsystems that are not subsystems of the original partial system. Fraïssé's construction and its variants are rich sources of examples that are central to model-theoretic classification theory, and recently infinite Steiner systems obtained via Fraïssé-type constructions have received attention from the model theory community.
Generalizing the Sharp Threshold Phenomenon for the Distributed Complexity of the Lovász Local Lemma
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Brandt, Maus and Uitto [PODC'19] showed that, in a restricted setting, the dependency of the complexity of the distributed Lovász Local Lemma (LLL) on the chosen LLL criterion exhibits a sharp threshold phenomenon: They proved that, under the LLL criterion $p2^d < 1$, if each random variable affects at most $3$ events, the deterministic complexity of the LLL in the LOCAL model is $O(d^2 + \log^* n)$. In stark contrast, under the criterion $p2^d \leq 1$, there is a randomized lower bound of $Ω(\log \log n)$ by Brandt et al. [STOC'16] and a deterministic lower bound of $Ω(\log n)$ by Chang, Kopelowitz and Pettie [FOCS'16]. Brandt, Maus and Uitto conjectured that the same behavior holds for the unrestricted setting where each random variable affects arbitrarily many events. We prove their conjecture, by providing an algorithm that solves the LLL in time $O(d^2 + \log^* n)$ under the LLL criterion $p2^d < 1$, which is tight in bounded-degree graphs due to an $Ω(\log^* n)$ lower bound by Chung, Pettie and Su [PODC'14]. By the work of Brandt, Maus and Uitto, obtaining such an algorithm can be reduced to proving that all members in a certain family of functions in arbitrarily high dimensions are convex on some specific domain. Unfortunately, an analytical description of these functions is known only for dimension at most $3$, which led to the aforementioned restriction of their result. While obtaining those descriptions for functions of (substantially) higher dimension seems out of the reach of current techniques, we show that their convexity can be inferred by combinatorial means.

On almost-symmetry in generalized numerical semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work we introduce the notion of almost-symmetry for generalized numerical semigroups. In addition to the main properties occurring in this new class, we present several characterizations for its elements. In particular we show that this class yields a new family of Frobenius generalized numerical semigroups and extends the class of irreducible generalized numerical semigroups. This investigation allows us to provide a method of computing all almost symmetric generalized numerical semigroup having a fixed Frobenius element and organizing them in a rooted tree depending on a chosen monomial order.

Determinants of binary matrices achieve every integral value up to $Ω(2^n/n)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
This work shows that the smallest natural number $d_n$ that is not the determinant of some $n\times n$ binary matrix is at least $c\,2^n/n$ for $c=1/201$. That same quantity naturally lower bounds the number of distinct integers $D_n$ which can be written as the determinant of some $n\times n$ binary matrix. This asymptotically improves the previous result of $d_n=Ω(1.618^n)$ and slightly improves the previous result of $D_n\ge 2^n/g(n)$ for a particular $g(n)=ω(n^2)$ function.

Independent Sets of Random Trees and of Sparse Random Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An independent set of size $k$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is a set of $k$ vertices of the graph, no two of which are connected by an edge. Let $x_{k}(G)$ be the number of independent sets of size $k$ in the graph $G$ and let $α(G)=\max\{k\geq0\colon x_{k}(G)\neq0\}$. In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdös asked if the independent set sequence $x_{0}(G),x_{1}(G),\ldots,x_{α(G)}(G)$ of a tree is unimodal (the sequence goes up and then down). This problem is still open. In 2006, Levit and Mandrescu showed that the last third of the independent set sequence of a tree is decreasing. We show that the first 46.8\% of the independent set sequence of a random tree is increasing with (exponentially) high probability as the number of vertices goes to infinity. So, the question of Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdös is ``four-fifths true'', with high probability. We also show unimodality of the independent set sequence of Erdös-Renyi random graphs, when the expected degree of a single vertex is large (with (exponentially) high probability as the number of vertices in the graph goes to infinity, except for a small region near the mode). A weaker result is shown for random regular graphs. The structure of independent sets of size $k$ as $k$ varies is of interest in probability, statistical physics, combinatorics, and computer science.
The Classification of Magic SET Squares
Published • View Publication • BIB
A magic SET square is a 3 by 3 table of SET cards such that each row, column, diagonal, and anti-diagonal is a set. We allow the following transformations of the square: shuffling features, shuffling values within the features, rotations and reflections of the square. Under these transformations, there are 21 types of magic SET squares. We calculate the number of squares of each type. In addition, we discuss a game of SET tic-tac-toe.

Mather classes and conormal spaces of Schubert varieties in cominuscule spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G/P$ be a complex cominuscule flag manifold. We prove a type independent formula for the torus equivariant Mather class of a Schubert variety in $G/P$, and for a Schubert variety pulled back via the natural projection $G/Q \to G/P$. We apply this to find formulae for the local Euler obstructions of Schubert varieties, and for the torus equivariant localizations of the conormal spaces of these Schubert varieties. We conjecture positivity properties for the local Euler obstructions and for the Schubert expansion of Mather classes. We check the conjectures in many cases, by utilizing results of Boe and Fu about the characteristic cycles of the intersection homology sheaves of Schubert varieties. We also conjecture that certain `Mather polynomials' are unimodal in general Lie type, and log concave in type A.

Stability theorems for some Kruskal-Katona type results
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical Kruskal-Katona theorem gives a tight upper bound for the size of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ as a function of the size of its shadow. Its stability version was obtained by Keevash who proved that if the size of $\mathcal{H}$ is close to the maximum, then $\mathcal{H}$ is structurally close to a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph. We prove similar stability results for two classes of hypergraphs whose extremal properties have been investigated by many researchers: the cancellative hypergraphs and hypergraphs without expansion of cliques.
On the Gap between Scalar and Vector Solutions of Generalized Combination Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study scalar-linear and vector-linear solutions of the generalized combination network. We derive new upper and lower bounds on the maximum number of nodes in the middle layer, depending on the network parameters and the alphabet size. These bounds improve and extend the parameter range of known bounds. Using these new bounds we present a lower bound and an upper bound on the gap in the alphabet size between optimal scalar-linear and optimal vector-linear network coding solutions. For a fixed network structure, while varying the number of middle-layer nodes $r$, the asymptotic behavior of the upper and lower bounds shows that the gap is in $Θ(\log(r))$.

Extremal problems and results related to Gallai-colorings
Published in DiscreteMathematics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
A Gallai-coloring (Gallai-$k$-coloring) is an edge-coloring (with colors from $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$) of a complete graph without rainbow triangles. Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $k$, the $k$-colored Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that every Gallai-$k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we consider two extremal problems related to Gallai-$k$-colorings. First, we determine upper and lower bounds for the maximum number of edges that are not contained in any rainbow triangle or monochromatic triangle in a $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$. Second, for $n\geq GR_k(K_3)$, we determine upper and lower bounds for the minimum number of monochromatic triangles in a Gallai-$k$-coloring of $K_{n}$, yielding the exact value for $k=3$. Furthermore, we determine the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(K_4+e)$ for the graph on five vertices consisting of a $K_4$ with a pendant edge.

$φ$-Thue-Morse sequences and infinite products
In this article we introduce a new approach to compute infinite products defined by automatic sequences involving the Thue-Morse sequence. As examples, for any positive integers $q$ and $r$ such that $0 \leq r \leq q-1$, we find infinitely many couples of rational functions $R(x)$ and $S(n)$ such that $$\prod_{n=0}^{\infty}R(n)^{\frac{1+a_n}{2}}S(n)^{\frac{1-a_n}{2}}=2cos(\frac{2r+1}{2q}π),$$ where $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ is the Thue-Morse sequence beginning with $a_0=1,a_1= -1$.

Stable characters from permutation patterns
Published in Selecta Mathematica, Volume 27 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed permutation $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ$ denote the function which counts occurrences of $σ$ as a pattern in permutations from $S_n$. We study the expected value (and $d$-th moments) of $N_σ$ on conjugacy classes of $S_n$ and prove that the irreducible character support of these class functions stabilizes as $n$ grows. This says that there is a single polynomial in the variables $n, m_1, \ldots, m_{dk}$ which computes these moments on any conjugacy class (of cycle type $1^{m_1}2^{m_2}\cdots$) of any symmetric group. This result generalizes results of Hultman and of Gill, who proved the cases $(d,k)=(1,2)$ and $(1,3)$ using ad hoc methods. Our proof is, to our knowledge, the first application of partition algebras to the study of permutation patterns.
