Globally optimal dense and sparse spanning trees, and their applications
Published in Statistics, Optimization & Information Computing, 8(2), pp. 328-345, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Finding spanning trees under various constraints is a classic problem with applications in many fields. Recently, a novel notion of "dense" ("sparse") tree, and in particular spanning tree (DST and SST respectively), is introduced as the structure that have a large (small) number of subtrees, or small (large) sum of distances between vertices. We show that finding DST and SST reduces to solving the discrete optimization problems. New and efficient approaches to find such spanning trees is achieved by imposing certain conditions on the vertex degrees which are then used to define an objective function that is minimized over all spanning trees of the graph under consideration. Solving this minimization problem exactly may be prohibitively time consuming for large graphs. Hence, we propose to use genetic algorithm (GA) which is one of well known metaheuristics methods to solve DST and SST approximately. As far as we are aware this is the first time GA has been used in this context. We also demonstrate on a number of applications that GA approach is well suited for these types of problems both in computational efficiency and accuracy of the approximate solution. Furthermore, we improve the efficiency of the proposed method by using Kruskal's algorithm in combination with GA. The application of our methods to several practical large graphs and networks is presented. Computational results show that they perform faster than previously proposed heuristic methods and produce more accurate solutions. Furthermore, the new feature of the proposed approach is that it can be applied recursively to sub-trees or spanning trees with additional constraints in order to further investigate the graphical properties of the graph and/or network. The application of this methodology on the gene network of a cancer cell led to isolating key genes in a network that were not obvious from previous studies.
On the directions determined by a Cartesian product in an affine Galois plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the number of directions contained in a set of the form $A \times B \subset AG(2,p)$, where $p$ is prime, is at least $|A||B| - \min\{|A|,|B|\} + 2$. Here $A$ and $B$ are subsets of $GF(p)$ each with at least two elements and $|A||B| <p$. This bound is tight for an infinite class of examples. Our main tool is the use of the Rédei polynomial with Szőnyi's extension. As an application of our main result, we obtain an upper bound on the clique number of a Paley graph, matching the current best bound obtained recently by Hanson and Petridis.

Novák's conjecture on cyclic Steiner triple systems and its generalization
Published • View Publication • BIB
Novák conjectured in 1974 that for any cyclic Steiner triple systems of order $v$ with $v\equiv 1\pmod{6}$, it is always possible to choose one block from each block orbit so that the chosen blocks are pairwise disjoint. We consider the generalization of this conjecture to cyclic $(v,k,λ)$-designs with $1 \leq λ\leq k-1$. Superimposing multiple copies of a cyclic symmetric design shows that the generalization cannot hold for all $v$, but we conjecture that it holds whenever $v$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. We confirm that the generalization of the conjecture holds when $v$ is prime and $λ=1$ and also when $λ\leq (k-1)/2$ and $v$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. As a corollary, we show that for any $k \geq 3$, with the possible exception of finitely many composite orders $v$, every cyclic $(v,k,1)$-design without short orbits is generated by a $(v,k,1)$-disjoint difference family.

A Toeplitz property of ballot permutations and odd order permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new semi-combinatorial proof for the equality of the number of ballot permutations of length $n$ and the number of odd order permutations of length $n$, which is due to Bernardi, Duplantier and Nadeau. Spiro conjectures that the descent number of ballot permutations and certain cyclic weight of odd order permutations of the same length are equi-distributed. We present a bijection to establish a Toeplitz property for ballot permutations with any fixed number of descents, and a Toeplitz property for odd order permutations with any fixed cyclic weight. This allows us to refine Spiro's conjecture by tracking the neighbors of the largest letter in permutations.

Polyharmonic functions and random processes in cones
We investigate polyharmonic functions associated to Brownian motion and random walks in cones. These are functions which cancel some power of the usual Laplacian in the continuous setting and of the discrete Laplacian in the discrete setting. We show that polyharmonic functions naturally appear while considering asymptotic expansions of the heat kernel in the Brownian case and in lattice walk enumeration problems. We provide a method to construct general polyharmonic functions through Laplace transforms and generating functions in the continuous and discrete cases, respectively. This is done by using a functional equation approach.

A generalisation of Seymour's second neighbourhood conjecture
In this note we propose a generalisation of Seymour's Second Neighbourhood Conjecture to two directed graphs on a vertex set. We prove that this generalisation holds in the case of tournaments, and we show that a natural strengthening of this conjecture does not hold.

Factors and loose Hamilton cycles in sparse pseudo-random hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the emergence of spanning structures in sparse pseudo-random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, using the following comparatively weak notion of pseudo-randomness. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices is called $(p,α,ε)$-pseudo-random if for all (not necessarily disjoint) vertex subsets $A_1,\dots, A_k{\subseteq} V(H)$ with $|A_1|\cdots |A_k|{\geq}αn^{k}$ we have $$e(A_1,\dots, A_k)=(1\pmε)p |A_1|\cdots |A_k|.$$ For any linear $k$-uniform $F$ we provide a bound on $α=α(n)$ in terms of $p=p(n)$ and $F$, such that (under natural divisibility assumptions on $n$) any $k$-uniform $\big(p,α, o(1)\big)$-pseudo-random $n$-vertex hypergraph $H$ with a mild minimum vertex degree condition contains an $F$-factor. The approach also enables us to establish the existence of loose Hamilton cycles in sufficiently pseudo-random hypergraphs and all results imply corresponding bounds for stronger notions of hypergraph pseudo-randomness such as jumbledness or large spectral gap. As a consequence, $\big(p,α, o(1)\big)$-pseudo-random $k$-graphs as above contain: $(i)$ a perfect matching if $α=o(p^{k})$ and $(ii)$ a loose Hamilton cycle if $α=o(p^{k-1})$. This extends the works of Lenz--Mubayi, and Lenz--Mubayi--Mycroft who studied the analogous problems in the dense setting.

Locks fit into keys: a crystal analysis of lock polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lock polynomials and lock Kohnert tableaux are natural analogues to key polynomials and key Kohnert tableaux, respectively. In this paper, we compare lock polynomials to the much-studied key polynomials and show that the difference of a key polynomial and lock polynomial for the same composition is monomial positive. We also examine the conditions for which key and lock polynomials are symmetric or quasisymmetric. We accomplish these goals combinatorially using key Kohnert tableaux and lock Kohnert tableaux. In particular, for the difference of a key minus a lock, we focus on the behavior of crystal operators on Kohnert tableaux. The Type A Demazure crystal can be realized on the vertex set of key Kohnert tableaux, and we show with an explicit combinatorial definition that a similar crystal-like structure exists on the vertex set of lock Kohnert tableaux. Finally, we construct an injective, weight-preserving map from lock Kohnert tableaux to key Kohnert tableaux that intertwines the crystal operators.

New constructions of Deza digraphs
Deza digraphs were introduced in 2003 by Zhang and Wang as directed graph version of Deza graphs, that also generalize the notion of directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper we give several new constructions of Deza digraphs. Further, we introduce twin and Siamese twin (directed) Deza graphs and construct several examples. Moreover, we classify directed Deza graphs with parameters $(n,k,b,a,t)$ having the property that $b=t$. Finally, we introduce a variation of directed Deza graphs and provide a construction from finite fields.

Quadratic Embedding Constants of Graph Joins
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 38 (2022), 161, 22 pages, • View Publication • BIB
The quadratic embedding constant (QE constant) of a graph is a new characteristic value of a graph defined through the distance matrix. We derive formulae for the QE constants of the join of two regular graphs, double graphs and certain lexicographic product graphs. Examples include complete bipartite graphs, wheel graphs, friendship graphs, completely split graph, and some graphs associated to strongly regular graphs.
Distance $r$-domination number and $r$-independence complexes of graphs
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$, denoted Ind$_r(G)$, is a simplicial complex whose faces are subsets $A \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[A]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we establish a relation between the distance $r$-domination number of $G$ and (homological) connectivity of Ind$_r(G)$. We also prove that Ind$_r(G)$, for a chordal graph $G$, is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Given a wedge of spheres, we also provide a construction of a chordal graph whose $r$-independence complex has the homotopy type of the given wedge.

The Absent-Minded Passengers Problem via Computer Algebra
In a delightful article that recently appeared in the American Mathematics Monthly, Norbert Henze and Guenter Last discuss the "Absent-Minded Passengers" Problem, but left open finding an explicit expression for the probability generating function, of the random variable "Number of passengers occupying a wrong seat", when the number of absent-minded passengers is larger than one. This is accomplished in this note, using experimental mathematics and symbolic computation. We also derive explicit expressions for the first 8 moments of the original case of one absent-minded passenger, and indicate how to extend it to the general case

A family of $q$-congruences modulo the square of a cyclotomic polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using Watson's terminating $_8φ_7$ transformation formula, we prove a family of $q$-congruences modulo the square of a cyclotomic polynomial, which were originally conjectured by the author and Zudilin [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 475 (2019), 1636--646]. As an application, we deduce two supercongruences modulo $p^4$ ($p$ is an odd prime) and their $q$-analogues. This also partially confirms a special case of Swisher's (H.3) conjecture.

The v-number of edge ideals
Published in J. Combin. Ser. A 177 (2021), 105310 • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this work is to study the v-number of edge ideals of clutters and graphs. We relate the v-number with the regularity of edge ideals and study the combinatorial structure of the graphs whose edge ideals have their second symbolic power Cohen-Macaulay.

On star-Moments of the compression of the free unitary Brownian motion by a free projection
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we derive explicit expressions for the moments and for the mixed moments of the compression of a free unitary Brownian motion by a free projection. While the moments of this non-normal operator are readily derived using analytical or combinatorial methods, we only succeeded to derive its mixed ones after solving a non-linear partial differential equation for their two-variables generating function. Nonetheless, the combinatorics of non crossing partitions lead to another expression of the lowest-order mixed moment. We shall also give some interest in odd alternating moments. In particular, we derive a linear partial differential equation for their generating function and discuss the combinatorial approach to these moments when the rank of the projection equals $1/2$.

Limit Shapes for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove asymptotic 0-1 Laws satisfied by diagrams of unimodal sequences of positive integers. These diagrams consist of columns of squares in the plane, and the upper boundary is called the shape. For various types, we show that, as the number of squares tends to infinity, $100\%$ of shapes are near a certain curve---that is, there is a single {\it limit shape}. Similar phenomena have been well-studied for integer partitions, so the present work is a natural extension. One notable corollary is a transferred limit shape for overpartitions.

Weak Lefschetz property of PL-spheres
A recent result of Papadakis-Petrotou shows that every simplicial sphere has the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic $2$. In this paper, we give a simpler proof of this result for PL-spheres by showing that the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic $2$ is preserved by bistellar moves. Several applications are given.

On maximum additive Hermitian rank-metric codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the work of Zhou "On equivalence of maximum additive symmetric rank-distance codes" (2020) based on the paper of Schmidt "Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory" (2015), we investigate the equivalence issue of maximum $d$-codes of Hermitian matrices. More precisely, in the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$ of Hermitian matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ we have two possible equivalence: the classical one coming from the maps that preserve the rank in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^{n\times n}$, and the one that comes from restricting to those maps preserving both the rank and the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$. We prove that when $d<n$ and the codes considered are maximum additive $d$-codes and $(n-d)$-designs, these two equivalence relations coincide. As a consequence, we get that the idealisers of such codes are not distinguishers, unlike what usually happens for rank metric codes. Finally, we deal with the combinatorial properties of known maximum Hermitian codes and, by means of this investigation, we present a new family of maximum Hermitian $2$-code, extending the construction presented by Longobardi et al. in "Automorphism groups and new constructions of maximum additive rank metric codes with restrictions" (2020).

The $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and the rational Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we propose an $(s+d,d)$-abacus for $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and establish a bijection between the $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and the rational Motzkin paths of type $(s+d,-d)$. This result not only gives a lattice path interpretation of the $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions but also counts them with a closed formula. Also we enumerate $(s,s+1,\dots,s+p)$-core partitions with $k$ corners and self-conjugate $(s,s+1,\dots,s+p)$-core partitions.

The combinatorics of tensor products of higher Auslander algebras of type $A$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider maximal non-$l$-intertwining collections, which are a higher-dimensional version of the maximal non-crossing collections which give clusters of Plücker coordinates in the Grassmannian coordinate ring, as described by Scott. We extend a method of Scott for producing such collections, which are related to tensor products of higher Auslander algebras of type $A$. We show that a higher preprojective algebra of the tensor product of two $d$-representation-finite algebras has a $d$-precluster-tilting subcategory. Finally we relate mutations of these collections to a form of tilting for these algebras.
