Random Čech Complexes on Manifolds with Boundary
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a compact, unit volume, Riemannian manifold with boundary. In this paper we study the homology of a random Čech-complex generated by a homogeneous Poisson process in $M$. Our main results are two asymptotic threshold formulas, an upper threshold above which the Čech complex recovers the $k$-th homology of $M$ with high probability, and a lower threshold below which it almost certainly does not. These thresholds are close together in the sense that they have the same leading term. Here $k$ is positive and strictly less than the dimension $d$ of the manifold. This extends work of Bobrowski and Weinberger in [BW17] and Bobrowski and Oliveira [BO19] who establish similar formulas when $M$ is a torus and, more generally, is closed and has no boundary. We note that the cases with and without boundary lead to different answers: The corresponding common leading terms for the upper and lower thresholds differ being $\log (n) $ when $M$ is closed and $(2-2/d)\log (n)$ when $M$ has boundary; here $n$ is the expected number of sample points. Our analysis identifies a special type of homological cycle, which we call a $Θ$-like-cycle, which occur close to the boundary and establish that the first order term of the lower threshold is $(2-2/d)\log (n)$.

Aggregate Play and Welfare in Strategic Interactions on Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
In recent work by Bramoullé and Kranton, a model for the provision of public goods on a network was presented and relations between equilibria of such a game and properties of the network were established. This model was further extended to include games with imperfect substitutability in Bramoullé et al. The vast multiplicity of equilibria in such games along with the drastic changes in equilibria with small changes in network structure, makes it challenging for a system planner to estimate the maximum social welfare of such a game or to devise interventions that enhance this welfare. Our main results address this challenge by providing close approximations to the maximum social welfare and the maximum aggregate play in terms of only network characteristics such as the maximum degree and independence number. For the special case when the underlying network is a tree, we derive formulae which use only the number of nodes and their degrees. These results allow a system planner to assess aggregate outcomes and design interventions for the game, directly from the underlying graph structure, without enumerating all equilibria of the game, thereby significantly simplifying the planner's problem. A part of our results can be viewed as a logical extension of [7] where the maximum weighted aggregate effort of the model in [2] was characterized as the weighted independence number of the graph.
Transitive tournament tilings in oriented graphs with large minimum total degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\vec{T}_k$ be the transitive tournament on $k$ vertices. We show that every oriented graph on $n=4m$ vertices with minimum total degree $(11/12+o(1))n$ can be partitioned into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_4$'s, and this bound is asymptotically tight. We also improve the best known bound on the minimum total degree for partitioning oriented graphs into vertex disjoint $\vec{T}_k$'s.

Refined Enumeration of Symmetry Classes of Alternating Sign Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove refined enumeration results on several symmetry classes as well as related classes of alternating sign matrices with respect to classical boundary statistics, using the six-vertex model of statistical physics. More precisely, we study vertically symmetric, vertically and horizontally symmetric, vertically and horizontally perverse, off-diagonally and off-antidiagonally symmetric, vertically and off-diagonally symmetric, quarter turn symmetric as well as quasi quarter turn symmetric alternating sign matrices. Our results prove conjectures of Fischer, Duchon and Robbins.
Characterizing cospectral vertices via isospectral reduction
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two emerging topics in graph theory are the study of cospectral vertices of a graph, and the study of isospectral reductions of graphs. In this paper, we prove a fundamental relationship between these two areas, which is that two vertices of a graph are cospectral if and only if the isospectral reduction over these vertices has a nontrivial automorphism. It is well known that if two vertices of a graph are symmetric, i.e. if there exists a graph automorphism permuting these two vertices, then they are cospectral. This paper extends this result showing that any two cospectral vertices are symmetric in some reduced version of the graph. We also prove that two vertices are strongly cospectral if and only if they are cospectral and the isospectral reduction over these two vertices has simple eigenvalues. We further describe how these results can be used to construct new families of graphs with cospectral vertices.

Wiener index and Harary index on pancyclic graphs
Wiener index and Harary index are two classic and well-known topological indices for the characterization of molecular graphs. Recently, Yu et al. \cite{YYSX} established some sufficient conditions for a graph to be pancyclic in terms of the edge number, the spectral radius and the signless Laplacian spectral radius of the graph. In this paper, we give some sufficient conditions for a graph being pancyclic in terms of the Wiener index, the Harary index, the distance spectral radius and the Harary spectral radius of a graph.

Gröbner bases and the Cohen-Macaulay property of Li's double determinantal varieties
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 7 (2020), 142--158 • View Publication • BIB
We consider double determinantal varieties, a special case of Nakajima quiver varieties. Li conjectured that double determinantal varieties are normal, irreducible, Cohen-Macaulay varieties whose defining ideals have a Gröbner basis given by their natural generators. We use liaison theory to prove this conjecture in a manner that generalizes results for mixed ladder determinantal varieties. We also give a formula for the dimension of a double determinantal variety.

Throttling numbers for adversaries on connected graphs
In this paper, we answer two open problems from [Breen et al., Throttling for the game of Cops and Robbers on graphs, Discrete Math., 341 (2018) 2418-2430]. The throttling number $th_c(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum possible value of $k + capt_k(G)$ over all positive integers $k$, where $capt_k(G)$ is the number of rounds needed for $k$ cops to capture the robber on $G$. One of the problems from [Breen et al., 2018] was to determine whether there exists a family of trees $T$ of order $n$ for which $th_c(T)$ is asymptotically equal to $2 \sqrt{n}$. We show that such a family cannot exist by improving the upper bound on $\displaystyle \max_{T} th_c(T)$ for all trees $T$ of order $n$ from $2 \sqrt{n}$ to $\frac{\sqrt{14}}{2} \sqrt{n} + O(1)$. We prove this bound by deriving a more general throttling bound for connected graphs that applies to multiple graph adversaries, including the robber and the gambler. This also improves the best known upper bounds on $th_c(G)$ for chordal graphs and unicyclic graphs $G$, as well as throttling numbers for positive semidefinite (PSD) zero forcing on trees. In addition to the results about cop versus robber, we use our general throttling bound to improve previous upper bounds on throttling numbers for the cop versus gambler game on connected graphs. Another open problem from [Breen et al., 2018] was to obtain a bound on $th_c(G)$ for cactus graphs $G$. We prove an $O(\sqrt{n})$ bound for all cactus graphs $G$ of order $n$. Furthermore, we exhibit a family of trees $T$ of order $n$ that have $th_c(T) > 1.4502 \sqrt{n}$ for all $n$ sufficiently large, improving on the previous lower bound of $\lceil \sqrt{2n}-\frac{1}{2} \rceil + 1$ on $\displaystyle \max_{T} th_c(T)$ for trees $T$ of order $n$.
Associahedra for finite type cluster algebras and minimal relations between $\mathbf{g}$-vectors
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 127(3):513-588, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the mesh mutations are the minimal relations among the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vectors with respect to any initial seed in any finite type cluster algebra. We then use this algebraic result to derive geometric properties of the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vector fan: we show that the space of all its polytopal realizations is a simplicial cone, and we then observe that this property implies that all its realizations can be described as the intersection of a high dimensional positive orthant with well-chosen affine spaces. This sheds a new light on and extends earlier results of N. Arkani-Hamed, Y. Bai, S. He, and G. Yan in type $A$ and of V. Bazier-Matte, G. Douville, K. Mousavand, H. Thomas and E. Yildirim for acyclic initial seeds. Moreover, we use a similar approach to study the space of polytopal realizations of the $\boldsymbol{g}$-vector fans of another generalization of the associahedron: non-kissing complexes (a.k.a. support $τ$-tilting complexes) of gentle algebras. We show that the space of realizations of the non-kissing fan is simplicial when the gentle bound quiver is brick and $2$-acyclic, and we describe in this case its facet-defining inequalities in terms of mesh mutations. Along the way, we prove algebraic results on $2$-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories, and on extriangulated categories that are of independent interest. In particular, we prove, in those two setups, an analogue of a result of M. Auslander on minimal relations for Grothendieck groups of module categories.
On the size-Ramsey number of grid graphs
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 670-685 • View Publication • BIB
The size-Ramsey number of a graph $F$ is the smallest number of edges in a graph $G$ with the Ramsey property for $F$, that is, with the property that any 2-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $F$. We prove that the size-Ramsey number of the grid graph on $n\times n$ vertices is bounded from above by $n^{3+o(1)}$.

Generalized Ramsey numbers: forbidding paths with few colors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f(K_n, H, q)$ be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ is colored with at least $q$ colors. Originally posed by Erdős and Shelah when $H$ is complete, the asymptotics of this extremal function have been extensively studied when $H$ is a complete graph or a complete balanced bipartite graph. Here we investigate this function for some other $H$, and in particular we determine the asymptotic behavior of $f(K_n, P_v, q)$ for almost all values of $v$ and $q$, where $P_v$ is a path on $v$ vertices.

Explicit and compact representations for the Green's function and the Solution of Linear Difference Equations with variable coefficients
Leibniz' combinatorial formula for determinants is modified to establish a condensed and easily handled compact representation for Hessenbergians, referred to here as Leibnizian representation. Alongside, the elements of a fundamental solution set associated with linear difference equations with variable coefficients of order $p$ are explicitly represented by $p$ banded Hessenbergian solutions, built up solely of the variable coefficients. This yields banded Hessenbergian representations for the elements both of the product of companion matrices and of the determinant ratio formula of the one-sided Green's function (Green's function for short). Combining the above results, the elements of the foregoing notions are endowed with compact representations formulated here by Leibnizian and nested sum representations. We show that the elements of the fundamental solution set can be expressed in terms of the first banded Hessenbergian fundamental solution, called principal determinant function. We also show that the Green's function coincides with the principal determinant function, when both functions are restricted to a fairly large domain. These results yield, an explicit and compact representation of the Green's function restriction along with an explicit and compact solution representation of the previously stated type of difference equations in terms of the variable coefficients, the initial conditions and the forcing term. The equivalence of the Green's function solution representation and the well known single determinant solution representation is derived from first principles. Algorithms and automated software are employed to illustrate the main results of this paper.

Bijective proofs of shuffle compatibility results
Published • View Publication • BIB
Define a permutation to be any sequence of distinct positive integers. Given two permutations p and s on disjoint underlying sets, we denote by p sh s the set of shuffles of p and s (the set of all permutations obtained by interleaving the two permutations). A permutation statistic is a function St whose domain is the set of permutations such that St(p) only depends on the relative order of the elements of p. A permutation statistic is shuffle compatible if the distribution of St on p sh s depends only on St(p) and St(s) and their lengths rather than on the individual permutations themselves. This notion is implicit in the work of Stanley in his theory of P-partitions. The definition was explicitly given by Gessel and Zhuang who proved that various permutation statistics were shuffle compatible using mainly algebraic means. This work was continued by Grinberg. The purpose of the present article is to use bijective techniques to give demonstrations of shuffle compatibility. In particular, we show how a large number of permutation statistics can be shown to be shuffle compatible using a few simple bijections. Our approach also leads to a method for constructing such bijective proofs rather than having to treat each one in an ad hoc manner. Finally, we are able to prove a conjecture of Gessel and Zhuang about the shuffle compatibility of a certain statistic.

Noncommutative rational Pólya series
Published in Sel. Math., New Ser. 27, No. 3, Paper No. 34, 34 p. (2021) • View Publication • BIB
A (noncommutative) Pólya series over a field $K$ is a formal power series whose nonzero coefficients are contained in a finitely generated subgroup of $K^\times$. We show that rational Pólya series are unambiguous rational series, proving a 40 year old conjecture of Reutenauer. The proof combines methods from noncommutative algebra, automata theory, and number theory (specifically, unit equations). As a corollary, a rational series is a Pólya series if and only if it is Hadamard sub-invertible. Phrased differently, we show that every weighted finite automaton taking values in a finitely generated subgroup of a field (and zero) is equivalent to an unambiguous weighted finite automaton.

Integer Representations and Trajectories of the 3x+1 Problem
This paper studies certain trajectories of the Collatz function. I show that if for each odd number $n$, $n\sim 3n+2$ then every positive integer $n \in \mathbb{N}\setminus 2^{\mathbb{N}}$ has the representation $$n=\left(2^{a_{k+1}}-\sum_{i=0}^{k}{2^{a_i}3^{k-i}}\right)/ 3^{k+1}$$ where $0\le a_0 \le a_1 \le \cdot \cdot \cdot \le a_{k+1}$. As a consequence, in order to prove Collatz Conjecture I illustrate that it is sufficient to prove $n\sim 3n+2$ for any odd $n\in \mathbb{N}\setminus 2^{\mathbb{N}} $. This is the main result of the paper.

Counting numerical semigroups by genus and even gaps via Kunz-coordinate vectors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We contruct a one-to-one correspondence between a subset of numerical semigroups with genus $g$ and $γ$ even gaps and the integer points of a rational polytope. In particular, we give an overview to apply this correspondence to try to decide if the sequence $(n_g)$ is increasing, where $n_g$ denotes the number of numerical semigroups with genus $g$.

Hypergraphs without exponents
Here we give a short, concise proof for the following result. There exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ (for $k\geq 5$) without exponent, i.e., when the Turán function is not polynomial in $n$. More precisely, we have $ex(n,H)=o(n^{k-1})$ but it exceeds $n^{k-1-c}$ for any positive $c$ for $n> n_0(k,c)$. This is an extension (and simplification) of a result of Frankl and the first author from 1987 where the case $k=5$ was proven. We conjecture that it is true for $k\in \{3, 4\}$ as well.

QSPR analysis of some novel neighborhood degree based topological descriptors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Topological index is a numerical value associated with chemical constitution for correlation of chemical structure with various physical properties, chemical reactivity or biological activity. In this work, some new indices based on neighbourhood degree sum of nodes are proposed. To make the computation of the novel indices convenient, an algorithm is designed. QSPR analysis of these newly introduced indices are studied here which reveals their predicting power. Some mathematical properties of these indices are also discussed here.

The limiting distribution of the hook length of a randomly chosen cell in a random Young diagram
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $p(n)$ be the number of all integer partitions of the positive integer $n$ and let $λ$ be a partition, selected uniformly at random from among all such $p(n)$ partitions. It is known that each partition $λ$ has a unique graphical representation, composed by $n$ non-overlapping cells in the plane called Young diagram. As a second step of our sampling experiment, we select a cell $c$ uniformly at random from among all $n$ cells of the Young diagram of the partition $λ$. For large $n$, we study the asymptotic behavior of the hook length $Z_n=Z_n(λ,c)$ of the cell $c$ of a random partituion $λ$. This two-step sampling procedure suggests a product probability measure, which assigns the probability $1/np(n)$ to each pair $(λ,c)$. With respect to this probability measure, we show that the random variable $πZ_n/\sqrt{6n}$ converges weakly, as $n\to\infty$, to a random variable whose probability density function equals $6y/π^2 (e^y-1)$ if $0<y<\infty$, and zero elsewhere.

A counterexample to prism-hamiltonicity of 3-connected planar graphs
The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph $K_2$. A graph $G$ is hamiltonian if there exists a spanning cycle in $G$, and $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ is hamiltonian. In [M.~Rosenfeld, D.~Barnette, Hamiltonian circuits in certain prisms, Discrete Math. 5 (1973), 389--394] the authors conjectured that every 3-connected planar graph is prism-hamiltonian. We construct a counterexample to the conjecture.
