Better bounds for poset dimension and boxicity
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 373.3:2157-2172, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the dimension of every poset whose comparability graph has maximum degree $Δ$ is at most $Δ\log^{1+o(1)} Δ$. This result improves on a 30-year old bound of Füredi and Kahn, and is within a $\log^{o(1)}Δ$ factor of optimal. We prove this result via the notion of boxicity. The "boxicity" of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $d$ such that $G$ is the intersection graph of $d$-dimensional axis-aligned boxes. We prove that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has boxicity at most $Δ\log^{1+o(1)} Δ$, which is also within a $\log^{o(1)}Δ$ factor of optimal. We also show that the maximum boxicity of graphs with Euler genus $g$ is $Θ(\sqrt{g \log g})$, which solves an open problem of Esperet and Joret and is tight up to a $O(1)$ factor.
Identifiability for graphexes and the weak kernel metric
Published • View Publication • BIB
In two recent papers by Veitch and Roy and by Borgs, Chayes, Cohn, and Holden, a new class of sparse random graph processes based on the concept of graphexes over $σ$-finite measure spaces has been introduced. In this paper, we introduce a metric for graphexes that generalizes the cut metric for the graphons of the dense theory of graph convergence. We show that a sequence of graphexes converges in this metric if and only if the sequence of graph processes generated by the graphexes converges in distribution. In the course of the proof, we establish a regularity lemma and determine which sets of graphexes are precompact under our metric. Finally, we establish an identifiability theorem, characterizing when two graphexes are equivalent in the sense that they lead to the same process of random graphs.

The chromatic number of the plane is at least 5
We present a family of finite unit-distance graphs in the plane that are not 4-colourable, thereby improving the lower bound of the Hadwiger-Nelson problem. The smallest such graph that we have so far discovered has 1581 vertices.

Wiener Index, Hyper-wiener Index, Harary Index and Hamiltonicity of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we discuss the Hamiltonicity of graphs in terms of Wiener index, hyper-Wiener index and Harary index of their quasi-complement or complement. Firstly, we give some sufficient conditions for an balanced bipartite graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable and Hamiltonian, respectively. Secondly, we present some sufficient conditions for a nearly balanced bipartite graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable. Thirdly, we establish some conditions for a graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable and Hamiltonian, respectively. Finally, we provide some conditions for a $k$-connected graph to be Hamilton-connected and traceable for every vertex, respectively.
Unexpected curves arising from special line arrangements
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics (2019) • View Publication • BIB
In a recent paper arXiv:1602.02300v2, Cook II, Harbourne, Migliore and Nagel related the splitting type of a line arrangement in the projective plane to the number of conditions imposed by a general fat point of multiplicity $j$ to the linear system of curves of degree $j+1$ passing through the configuration of points dual to the given arrangement. If the number of conditions is less than the expected, we say that the configuration of points admits unexpected curves. In this paper, we characterize supersolvable line arrangements whose dual configuration admits unexpected curves and we provide other infinite families of line arrangements with this property.

Robust Bounds on Choosing from Large Tournaments
Published in Social Choice and Welfare, 54(1):87-110 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Tournament solutions provide methods for selecting the "best" alternatives from a tournament and have found applications in a wide range of areas. Previous work has shown that several well-known tournament solutions almost never rule out any alternative in large random tournaments. Nevertheless, all analytical results thus far have assumed a rigid probabilistic model, in which either a tournament is chosen uniformly at random, or there is a linear order of alternatives and the orientation of all edges in the tournament is chosen with the same probabilities according to the linear order. In this work, we consider a significantly more general model where the orientation of different edges can be chosen with different probabilities. We show that a number of common tournament solutions, including the top cycle and the uncovered set, are still unlikely to rule out any alternative under this model. This corresponds to natural graph-theoretic conditions such as irreducibility of the tournament. In addition, we provide tight asymptotic bounds on the boundary of the probability range for which the tournament solutions select all alternatives with high probability.

Tamari Lattices for Parabolic Quotients of the Symmetric Group
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 26, 4 (2019) P4.34 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the Tamari lattice by extending the notions of $231$-avoiding permutations, noncrossing set partitions, and nonnesting set partitions to parabolic quotients of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$. We show bijectively that these three objects are equinumerous. We show how to extend these constructions to parabolic quotients of any finite Coxeter group. The main ingredient is a certain aligned condition of inversion sets; a concept which can in fact be generalized to any reduced expression of any element in any (not necessarily finite) Coxeter group.

Aldous' Spectral Gap Conjecture for Normal Sets
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 373(10):7067-7086, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group on $n$ elements, and $Σ\subseteq S_{n}$ a symmetric subset of permutations. Aldous' spectral gap conjecture, proved by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer [arXiv:0906.1238], states that if $Σ$ is a set of transpositions, then the second eigenvalue of the Cayley graph $\mathrm{Cay}\left(S_{n},Σ\right)$ is identical to the second eigenvalue of the Schreier graph on $n$ vertices depicting the action of $S_{n}$ on $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\}$. Inspired by this seminal result, we study similar questions for other types of sets in $S_{n}$. Specifically, we consider normal sets: sets that are invariant under conjugation. Relying on character bounds due to Larsen and Shalev [2008], we show that for large enough $n$, if $Σ\subset S_{n}$ is a full conjugacy class, then the second eigenvalue of $\mathrm{Cay}\left(S_{n},Σ\right)$ is roughly identical to the second eigenvalue of the Schreier graph depicting the action of $S_{n}$ on ordered $4$-tuples of elements from $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\}$. We further show that this type of result does not hold when $Σ$ is an arbitrary normal set, but a slightly weaker one does hold. We state a conjecture in the same spirit regarding an arbitrary symmetric set $Σ\subset S_{n}$, which yields surprisingly strong consequences.

Lecture hall tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Young diagram, have a product formula. We also explore various combinatorial properties of lecture hall tableaux.
Involutions and the Gelfand character
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Gelfand representation of $\mathcal{S}_n$ is the multiplicity-free direct sum of the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{S}_n$. In this paper, we use a result of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman to find a recursive generating function for the Gelfand character. In order to find this generating function, we investigate descents of so-called $λ$-unimodal involutions.

On the ratio of prefix codes to all uniquely decodable codes with a given length distribution
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the ratio $ρ_{n,L}$ of prefix codes to all uniquely decodable codes over an $n$-letter alphabet and with length distribution $L$. For any integers $n\geq 2$ and $m\geq 1$, we construct a lower bound and an upper bound for $\inf_Lρ_{n,L}$, the infimum taken over all sequences $L$ of length $m$ for which the set of uniquely decodable codes with length distribution $L$ is non-empty. As a result, we obtain that this infimum is always greater than zero. Moreover, for every $m\geq 1$ it tends to 1 when $n\to\infty$, and for every $n\geq 2$ it tends to 0 when $m\to\infty$. In the case $m=2$, we also obtain the exact value for this infimum.
Total domination in cubic Knödel graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \textit{dominating set} if for each $u\in V(G)\setminus D$, $u$ is adjacent to some vertex $v\in D$. The \textit{dominating number}, $γ(G)$ of $G$, is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. A set $D\subseteq V(G)$ is a \textit{total dominating set} if for each $u\in V(G)$, $u$ is adjacent to some vertex $v\in D$. the The \textit{total dominating number}, $γ_t(G)$ of $G$, is the minimum cardinality of a total dominating set of $G$. For an even integer $n\ge2$ and $1\leΔ\le\lfloor\log_2n\rfloor$, a \textit{Knödel graph} $W_{Δ,n}$ is a $Δ$-regular bipartite graph of even order $n$, with vertices $(i,j)$, for $i=1,2$ and $0\le j\le n/2-1$, where for every $j$,$0\le j\le n/2-1$,there is an edge between vertex $(1,j)$ and every vertex $(2,j+2^k-1 \text{(mod(n/2)})$, for $k=0,1,\cdots,Δ-1$. In this paper, we determine the total domination number in $3$-regular Knödel graphs $W_{3,n}$.

Erdős-Szekeres theorem for cyclic permutations
Published in Involve 12 (2019) 351-360 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a cyclic permutation analogue of the Erd\H os-Szekeres theorem. In particular, we show that every cyclic permutation of length $(k-1)(\ell-1)+2$ has either an increasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $k+1$ or a decreasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $\ell+1$, and show that the result is tight. We also characterize all maximum-length cyclic permutations that do not have an increasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $k+1$ or a decreasing cyclic sub-permutation of length $\ell+1$.
The evolution of the structure of ABC-minimal trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
The atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index is a degree-based molecular descriptor that found diverse chemical applications. Characterizing trees with minimum ABC-index remained an elusive open problem even after serious attempts and is considered by some as one of the most intriguing open problems in mathematical chemistry. In this paper, we describe the exact structure of the extremal trees with sufficiently many vertices and we show how their structure evolves when the number of vertices grows. An interesting fact is that their radius is at most~$5$ and that all vertices except for one have degree at most 54. In fact, all but at most $O(1)$ vertices have degree 1, 2, 4, or 53. Let $γ_n = \min\{\abc(T) : T \text{ is a tree of order } n\}$. It is shown that $γ_n = \tfrac{1}{365} \sqrt{\tfrac{1}{53}} \Bigl(1 + 26\sqrt{55} + 156\sqrt{106} \Bigr) n + O(1) \approx 0.67737178\, n + O(1)$.

On the k-planar local crossing number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a fixed positive integer $k$, the $k$-planar local crossing number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\text{LCR}_k(G)$, is the minimum positive integer $L$ such that $G$ can be decomposed into $k$ subgraphs, each of which can be drawn in a plane such that no edge is crossed more than $L$ times. In this note, we show that under certain natural restrictions, the ratio $\text{LCR}_k(G)/\text{LCR}_1(G)$ is of order $1/k^2$, which is analogous to a recent result of Pach et al. for the $k$-planar crossing number (defined as the minimum positive integer $C$ for which there is a $k$-planar drawing of $G$ with $C$ total edge crossings). As a corollary of our proof we show that, under similar restrictions, one may obtain a $k$-planar drawing of $G$ with \emph{both} the total number of edge crossings as well as the maximum number of times any edge is crossed essentially matching the best known bounds. Our proof relies on the crossing number inequality and several probabilistic tools such as concentration of measure and the Lovász local lemma.

Singly even self-dual codes of length $24k+10$ and minimum weight $4k+2$
Published in Cryptography and Communications (2019) 11:597-608 • View Publication • BIB
Currently, the existence of an extremal singly even self-dual code of length $24k+10$ is unknown for all nonnegative integers $k$. In this note, we study singly even self-dual $[24k+10,12k+5,4k+2]$ codes. We give some restrictions on the possible weight enumerators of singly even self-dual $[24k+10,12k+5,4k+2]$ codes with shadows of minimum weight at least $5$ for $k=2,3,4,5$. We discuss a method for constructing singly even self-dual codes with minimal shadow. As an example, a singly even self-dual $[82,41,14]$ code with minimal shadow is constructed for the first time. In addition, as neighbors of the code, we construct singly even self-dual $[82,41,14]$ codes with weight enumerator for which no singly even self-dual code was previously known to exist.

Binary Subspace Codes in Small Ambient Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Codes in finite projective spaces equipped with the subspace distance have been proposed for error control in random linear network coding. Here we collect the present knowledge on lower and upper bounds for binary subspace codes for projective dimensions of at most $7$. We obtain several improvements of the bounds and perform two classifications of optimal subspace codes, which are unknown so far in the literature.

The $μ$-permanent revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A=(a_{ij})$ be an $n$-by-$n$ matrix. For any real number $μ$, we define the polynomial $$P_μ(A)=\sum_{σ\in S_n} a_{1σ(1)}\cdots a_{nσ(n)}\,μ^{\ell(σ)}\; ,$$ as the $μ$-permanent of $A$, where $\ell(σ)$ is the number of inversions of the permutation $σ$ in the symmetric group $S_n$. In this note, we review several less known results of the $μ$-permanent, recalling some of its interesting properties. Some determinantal conjectures are considered and extended to that polynomial. A correction to a previous note is presented as well.

On the extremal graphs for degenerate subsets, dynamic monopolies, and partial incentives
Published • View Publication • BIB
The famous lower bound $α(G)\geq \sum_{u\in V(G)}\frac{1}{d_G(u)+1}$ on the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$ due to Caro and Wei is known to be tight if and only if the components of $G$ are cliques, and has been generalized several times in the context of large degenerate subsets and small dynamic monopolies. We characterize the extremal graphs for a generalization due to Ackerman, Ben-Zwi, and Wolfovitz. Furthermore, we give a simple proof of a related bound concerning partial incentives due to Cordasco, Gargano, Rescigno, and Vaccaro, and also characterize the corresponding extremal graphs.
