Semi-inverted linear spaces and an analogue of the broken circuit complex

The image of a linear space under inversion of some coordinates is an affine variety whose structure is governed by an underlying hyperplane arrangement. In this paper, we generalize work by Proudfoot and Speyer to show that circuit polynomials form a universal Groebner basis for the ideal of polynomials vanishing on this variety. The proof relies on degenerations to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex determined by the underlying matroid. If the linear space is real, then the semi-inverted linear space is also an example of a hyperbolic variety, meaning that all of its intersection points with a large family of linear spaces are real.
Plabic R-matrices

Postnikov's plabic graphs in a disk are used to parametrize totally positive Grassmannians. In recent years plabic graphs have found numerous applications in math and physics. One of the key features of the theory is the fact that if a plabic graph is reduced, the face weights can be uniquely recovered from boundary measurements. On surfaces more complicated than a disk this property is lost. In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study of a certain semi-local transformation of weights for plabic networks on a cylinder that preserve boundary measurements. We call this a plabic R-matrix. We show that plabic R-matrices have underlying cluster algebra structure, generalizing recent work of Inoue-Lam-Pylyavskyy. Special cases of transformations we consider include geometric R-matrices appearing in Berenstein-Kazhdan theory of geometric crystals, and also certain transformations appearing in a recent work of Goncharov-Shen.

Due to their rich algebraic structures and various applications, circulant matrices have been of interest and continuously studied.
In this paper, the notions of Binomial-related matrices have been introduced. Such matrices are circulant matrices whose the first row is the coefficients of $(x+zy)^n$, where $z$ is a complex number of norm $1$ and $n$ is a positive integer.
In the case where $z\in \{1,-1,i,-i\}$, the explicit formula for the determinant of such matrices are completely determined. Known results on the determinants of binomial circulant matrices can be viewed as special cases.
Finally, some open problems are discussed.

Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be its adjacency matrix. Then $Γ$ is {\it singular} if $A(Γ)$ is singular. The singularity of graphs is of certain interest in graph theory and algebraic combinatorics. Here we investigate this problem for Cayley graphs ${\rm Cay}(G,H)$ when $G$ is a finite group and when the connecting set $H$ is a union of conjugacy classes of $G.$ In this situation the singularity problem reduces to finding an irreducible character $χ$ of $G$ for which $\sum_{h\in H}\,χ(h)=0.$
At this stage we focus on the case when $H$ is a single conjugacy class $h^G$ of $G.$ Here the above equality is equivalent to $χ(h)=0$. Much is known in this situation, with essential information coming from the block theory of representations of finite groups. An element $h\in G$ is called vanishing if $χ(h)=0$ for some irreducible character $χ$ of $G.$ We study vanishing elements mainly in finite simple groups and in alternating groups in particular. We suggest some approaches for constructing singular Cayley graphs.

Optimal rank-metric codes in Ferrers diagrams can be used to construct good subspace codes. Such codes consist of matrices having zeros at certain fixed positions. This paper generalizes the known constructions for Ferrers diagram rank-metric (FDRM) codes. Via a criteria for linear maximum rank distance (MRD) codes, an explicit construction for a class of systematic MRD codes is presented, which is used to produce new optimal FDRM codes. By exploring subcodes of Gabidulin codes, if each of the rightmost $δ-1$ columns in Ferrers diagram $\cal F$ has at least $n-r$ dots, where $r$ is taken in a range, then the conditions that an FDRM code in $\cal F$ is optimal are established. The known combining constructions for FDRM code are generalized by introducing the concept of proper combinations of Ferrers diagrams.

The set of factorizations of permutations in to $m$ transpositions of some symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n$ is naturally in bijection with the set of graphs of order $n$ and size $m$ with both edges and vertices labeled. We define a notion of duality (the \emph{mind-body duality}) for factorizations and such labeled graphs and interpret it in terms of Properly Embedded Graphs, a class of graphs embedded in a bounded compact oriented surface with all the vertices lying in the boundary, and show a close connection of this duality with the Hurwitz action of the Braid Group. Connections with the theory of Cellularly Embedded Graphs are highlighted and hints of possible applications are given. In this paper we focus on developing the necessary theory, leaving specific applications and further developments for future projects.
Decompositions of $n$-Cube into $2^mn$-Cycles
It is known that the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n,$ for $n$ even, has a decomposition into $k$-cycles for $k=n, 2n,$ $2^l$ with $2 \leq l \leq n.$ In this paper, we prove that $Q_n$ has a decomposition into $2^mn$-cycles for $n \geq 2^m.$ As an immediate consequence of this result, we get path decompositions of $Q_n$ as well. This gives a partial solution to a conjecture posed by Ramras and also, it solves some special cases of a conjecture due to Erde.
A degree sum condition on the order, the connectivity and the independence number for Hamiltonicity

In [Graphs Combin.~24 (2008) 469--483.], the third author and the fifth author conjectured that if $G$ is a $k$-connected graph such that $σ_{k+1}(G) \ge |V(G)|+κ(G)+(k-2)(α(G)-1)$, then $G$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle, where $σ_{k+1}(G)$, $κ(G)$ and $α(G)$ are the minimum degree sum of $k+1$ independent vertices, the connectivity and the independence number of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we settle this conjecture. This is an improvement of the result obtained by Li: If $G$ is a $k$-connected graph such that $σ_{k+1}(G) \ge |V(G)|+(k-1)(α(G)-1)$, then $G$ is Hamiltonian. The degree sum condition is best possible.

For any pattern $α$ of length at most two, we enumerate equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths of length $n\geq 0$ where two paths are equivalent whenever the occurrence positions of $α$ are identical on these paths. As a byproduct, we give a constructive bijection between Motzkin paths and some equivalence classes of Łukasiewicz paths.
Permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$
We consider four classes of polynomials over the fields $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$, $q=p^h$, $p>3$, $f_1(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^2-q+1}+Bx$, $f_2(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^3-q^2+q}+Bx$, $f_3(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q^2}-Bx$, $f_4(x)=x^{q^2+q-1}+Ax^{q}-Bx$, where $A,B \in \mathbb{F}_q$. We determine conditions on the pairs $(A,B)$ and we give lower bounds on the number of pairs $(A,B)$ for which these polynomials permute $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$.

A famous conjecture of Caccetta and Häggkvist is that in a digraph on $n$ vertices and minimum out-degree at least $\frac{n}{r}$ there is a directed cycle of length $r$ or less. We consider the following generalization: in an undirected graph on $n$ vertices, any collection of $n$ disjoint sets of edges, each of size at least $\frac{n}{r}$, has a rainbow cycle of length $r$ or less. We focus on the case $r=3$, and prove the existence of a rainbow triangle under somewhat stronger conditions than in the conjecture. For any fixed $k$ and large enough $n$, we determine the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex edge-coloured graph where all colour classes have size at most $k$ and there is no rainbow triangle. Moreover, we characterize the extremal graphs for this problem.
Resistance matrices of graphs with matrix weights

The \emph{resistance matrix} of a simple connected graph $G$ is denoted by $R$, and is defined by $R =(r_{ij})$, where $r_{ij}$ is the resistance distance between the vertices $i$ and $j$ of $G$. In this paper, we consider the resistance matrix of weighted graph with edge weights being positive definite matrices of same size. We derive a formula for the determinant and the inverse of the resistance matrix. Then, we establish an interlacing inequality for the eigenvalues of resistance and Laplacian matrices. Using this interlacing inequality, we obtain the inertia of the resistance matrix.

We study the family of \emph{derangement action digraphs}, which are a subfamily of the group action graphs introduced in [Fred Annexstein, Marc Baumslag, and Arnold L. Rosenberg, Group action graphs and parallel architectures, \emph{SIAM J. Comput.} 19 (1990), no. 3, 544--569]. For any non-empty set $X$ and a non-empty subset $S$ of $\Der(X)$, the set of derangments of $X$, we define the derangement action digraph $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ to have vertex set $X$, and an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $y=x^s$ for some $s\in S$. In common with Cayley graphs and digraphs, derangement action digraphs may be useful to model networks as the same routing and communication scheme can be implemented at each vertex. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions on $S$ under which $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ may be viewed as a simple graph of valency $|S|$, and we call such graphs derangement action graphs. Also we investigate the structural and symmetry properties of these digraphs and graphs. Several open problems are posed and many examples are given.
The Cone of Cyclic Sieving Phenomena

We study cyclic sieving phenomena (CSP) on combinatorial objects from an abstract point of view by considering a rational polyhedral cone determined by the linear equations that define such phenomena. Each lattice point in the cone corresponds to a non-negative integer matrix which jointly records the statistic and cyclic order distribution associated with the set of objects realizing the CSP. In particular we consider a universal subcone onto which every CSP matrix linearly projects such that the projection realizes a CSP with the same cyclic orbit structure, but via a universal statistic that has even distribution on the orbits.
Reiner et.al. showed that every cyclic action give rise to a unique polynomial (mod $q^n-1$) complementing the action to a CSP. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the converse to hold. This characterization allows one to determine if a combinatorial set with a statistic give rise (in principle) to a CSP without having a combinatorial realization of the cyclic action. We apply the criterion to conjecture a new CSP involving stretched Schur polynomials and prove our conjecture for certain rectangular tableaux. Finally we study some geometric properties of the CSP cone. We explicitly determine its half-space description and in the prime order case we determine its extreme rays.

Neural network models in neuroscience allow one to study how the connections between neurons shape the activity of neural circuits in the brain. In this chapter, we study Combinatorial Threshold-Linear Networks (CTLNs) in order to understand how the pattern of connectivity, as encoded by a directed graph, shapes the emergent nonlinear dynamics of the corresponding network. Important aspects of these dynamics are controlled by the stable and unstable fixed points of the network, and we show how these fixed points can be determined via graph-based rules. We also present an algorithm for predicting sequences of neural activation from the underlying directed graph, and examine the effect of graph symmetries on a network's set of attractors.

We construct a new polynomial invariant of maps (graphs embedded in a compact surface, orientable or non-orientable), which contains as specializations the Krushkal polynomial, the Bollobás--Riordan polynomial, the Las Vergnas polynomial, and their extensions to non-orientable surfaces, and hence in particular the Tutte polynomial. Other evaluations include the number of local flows and local tensions taking non-identity values in a given finite group.

We show that the Chow covectors of a linkage matching field define a bijection between certain degree vectors and lattice points, and we demonstrate how one can recover the linkage matching field from this bijection. This resolves two open questions from Sturmfels and Zelevinsky (1993) on linkage matching fields. For this, we give an explicit construction that associates a bipartite incidence graph of an ordered partition of a common set to each lattice point in a dilated simplex. Given a triangulation of a product of two simplices encoded by a set of spanning trees on a bipartite node set, we similarly prove that the bijection from left to right degree vectors of the trees is enough to recover the triangulation. As additional results, we show a cryptomorphic description of linkage matching fields and characterise the flip graph of a linkage matching field in terms of its prodsimplicial flag complex. Finally, we relate our findings to transversal matroids through the tropical Stiefel map.

Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.

A subfamily $\{F_1,F_2,\dots,F_{|P|}\}\subseteq \mathcal F$ is a copy of the poset $P$ if there exists a bijection $i:P\rightarrow \{F_1,F_2,\dots,F_{|P|}\}$ such that $p\le_P q$ implies $i(p)\subseteq i(q)$. A family $\mathcal F$ is $P$-free, if it does not contain a copy of $P$. In this paper we establish basic results on the maximum possible number of $k$-chains in a $P$-free family $\mathcal F\subseteq 2^{[n]}$. We prove that if the height of $P$, $h(P) > k$, then this number is of the order $Θ(\prod_{i=1}^{k+1}\binom{l_{i-1}}{l_i})$, where $l_0=n$ and $l_1\ge l_2\ge \dots \ge l_{k+1}$ are such that $n-l_1,l_1-l_2,\dots, l_k-l_{k+1},l_{k+1}$ differ by at most one. On the other hand if $h(P)\le k$, then we show that this number is of smaller order of magnitude.
Let $\vee_r$ denote the poset on $r+1$ elements $a, b_1, b_2, \ldots, b_r$, where $a < b_i$ for all $1 \le i \le r$ and let $\wedge_r$ denote its dual. For any values of $k$ and $l$, we construct a $\{\wedge_k,\vee_l\}$-free family and we conjecture that it contains asymptotically the maximum number of pairs in containment. We prove that this conjecture holds under the additional assumption that a chain of length 4 is forbidden. Moreover, we prove the conjecture for some small values of $k$ and $l$. We also derive the asymptotics of the maximum number of copies of certain tree posets $T$ of height 2 in $\{\wedge_k,\vee_l\}$-free families $\mathcal F \subseteq 2^{[n]}$.
