Prime Parking Functions on Rooted Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a labeled, rooted tree with edges oriented towards the root, we consider the vertices as parking spots and the edge orientation as a one-way street. Each driver, starting with her preferred parking spot, searches for and parks in the first unoccupied spot along the directed path to the root. If all $n$ drivers park, the sequence of spot preferences is called a parking function. We consider the sequences, called \emph{prime} parking functions, for which each driver parks and each edge in the tree is traversed by some driver after failing to park at her preferred spot. We prove that the total number of prime parking functions on trees with $n$ vertices is $(2n-2)!$. Additionally, we generalize \emph{increasing} parking functions, those in which the drivers park with a weakly-increasing order of preference, to trees and prove that the total number of increasing prime parking functions on trees with $n$ vertices is $(n-1)!S_{n-1}$, where $\{S_i\}_{i \geq 0}$ are the large Schröder numbers.

Further results on Andrews--Yee's two identities for mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $v(z;q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, by the method of comparing coefficients and the inverse technique, we establish the corresponding variate forms of two identities of Andrews and Yee for mock theta functions, as well as a few allied but unusual $q$-series identities. Among includes a new Bailey pair from which a product formula of two ${}_2φ_1$ series is derived. Further, we focus on two finite $q$-series summations arising from Andrews and Yee's mock theta function identities and expound some recurrence relations and transformation formulas behind them.

Triameter of Graphs
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory 2019 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce and study a new distance parameter {\it triameter} of a connected graph $G$, which is defined as $max\{d(u,v)+d(v,w)+d(u,w): u,v,w \in V\}$ and is denoted by $tr(G)$. We find various upper and lower bounds on $tr(G)$ in terms of order, girth, domination parameters etc., and characterize the graphs attaining those bounds. In the process, we provide some lower bounds of (connected, total) domination numbers of a connected graph in terms of its triameter. The lower bound on total domination number was proved earlier by Henning and Yeo. We provide a shorter proof of that. Moreover, we prove Nordhaus-Gaddum type bounds on $tr(G)$ and find $tr(G)$ for some specific family of graphs.

Boxicity, poset dimension, and excluded minors
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25(4) (2018), #P4.51 • View Publication • BIB
In this short note, we relate the boxicity of graphs (and the dimension of posets) with their generalized coloring parameters. In particular, together with known estimates, our results imply that any graph with no $K_t$-minor can be represented as the intersection of $O(t^2\log t)$ interval graphs (improving the previous bound of $O(t^4)$), and as the intersection of $\tfrac{15}2 t^2$ circular-arc graphs.
Isolated factorizations and their applications in simplicial affine semigroups
Published in García-Sánchez, Pedro A.; Herrera-Poyatos, Andrés Isolated factorizations and their applications in simplicial affine semigroups. J. Algebra Appl. 19 (2020), no. 5, 2050082, 42 pp • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the concept of isolated factorizations of an element of a commutative monoid and study its properties. We give several bounds for the number of isolated factorizations of simplicial affine semigroups and numerical semigroups. We also generalize $α$-rectangular numerical semigroups to the context of simplicial affine semigroups and study their isolated factorizations. As a consequence of our results, we characterize those complete intersection simplicial affine semigroups with only one Betti minimal element in several ways. Moreover, we define Betti sorted and Betti divisible simplicial affine semigroups and characterize them in terms of gluings and their minimal presentations. Finally, we determine all the Betti divisible numerical semigroups, which turn out to be those numerical semigroups that are free for any arrangement of their minimal generators.
A unified approach to construct snarks with circular flow number 5
Published • View Publication • BIB
The well-known 5-flow Conjecture of Tutte, stated originally for integer flows, claims that every bridgeless graph has circular flow number at most 5. It is a classical result that the study of the 5-flow Conjecture can be reduced to cubic graphs, in particular to snarks. However, very few procedures to construct snarks with circular flow number 5 are known. In the first part of this paper, we summarise some of these methods and we propose new ones based on variations of the known constructions. Afterwards, we prove that all such methods are nothing but particular instances of a more general construction that we introduce into detail. In the second part, we consider many instances of this general method and we determine when our method permits to obtain a snark with circular flow number 5. Finally, by a computer search, we determine all snarks having circular flow number 5 up to 36 vertices. It turns out that all such snarks of order at most 34 can be obtained by using our method, and that the same holds for 96 of the 98 snarks of order 36 with circular flow number 5.

On set systems without a simplex-cluster and the Junta method
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family $\{A_{0},\ldots,A_{d}\}$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is called a simplex-cluster if $A_{0}\cap\cdots\cap A_{d}=\varnothing$, $|A_{0}\cup\cdots\cup A_{d}|\le2k$, and the intersection of any $d$ of the sets in $\{A_{0},\ldots,A_{d}\}$ is nonempty. In 2006, Keevash and Mubayi conjectured that for any $d+1\le k\le\frac{d}{d+1}n$, the largest family of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ that does not contain a simplex-cluster is the family of all $k$-subsets that contain a given element. We prove the conjecture for all $k\geζn$ for an arbitrarily small $ζ>0$, provided that $n\ge n_{0}(ζ,d)$. We call a family $\{A_{0},\ldots,A_{d}\}$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ a $(d,k,s)$-cluster if $A_{0}\cap\cdots\cap A_{d}=\varnothing$ and $|A_{0}\cup\cdots\cup A_{d}|\le s$. We also show that for any $ζn\le k\le\frac{d}{d+1}n$ the largest family of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ that does not contain a $(d,k,(\frac{d+1}{d}+ζ)k)$-cluster is again the family of all $k$-subsets that contain a given element, provided that $n\ge n_{0}(ζ,d)$. Our proof is based on the junta method for extremal combinatorics initiated by Dinur and Friedgut and further developed by Ellis, Keller, and the author.
The exact chromatic number of the convex segment disjointness graph
Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in strictly convex position in the plane. Let $D_n$ be the graph whose vertex set is the set of all line segments with endpoints in $P$, where disjoint segments are adjacent. The chromatic number of this graph was first studied by Araujo, Dumitrescu, Hurtado, Noy, and Urrutia [2005] and then by Dujmović and Wood [2007]. Improving on their estimates, we prove the following exact formula: $$χ(D_n) = n - \left\lfloor \sqrt{2n + \tfrac{1}{4}} - \tfrac{1}{2}\right\rfloor.$$
Pure pairs. II. Excluding all subdivisions of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove for every graph H there exists a>0 such that, for every graph G with at least two vertices, if no induced subgraph of G is a subdivision of H, then either some vertex of G has at least a|G| neighbours, or there are two disjoint sets A,B of at least a|G| vertices such that no edge joins A and B. It follows that for every graph H, there exists c>0 such that for every graph G, if no induced subgraph of G or its complement is a subdivision of H, then G has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. This is related to the Erdos-Hajnal conjecture.

Bohr sets in triple products of large sets in amenable groups
We answer a question of Hegyvári and Ruzsa concerning effective estimates of the Bohr-regularity of certain triple sums of sets with positive upper Banach densities in the integers. Our proof also works for any discrete amenable group, and it does not require all addends in the triple products we consider to have positive (left) upper Banach densities; one of the addends is allowed to only have positive upper asymptotic density with respect to a (possibly very sparse) ergodic sequence.

Applying Computer Algebra Systems with SAT Solvers to the Williamson Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We employ tools from the fields of symbolic computation and satisfiability checking---namely, computer algebra systems and SAT solvers---to study the Williamson conjecture from combinatorial design theory and increase the bounds to which Williamson matrices have been enumerated. In particular, we completely enumerate all Williamson matrices of even order up to and including 70 which gives us deeper insight into the behaviour and distribution of Williamson matrices. We find that, in contrast to the case when the order is odd, Williamson matrices of even order are quite plentiful and exist in every even order up to and including 70. As a consequence of this and a new construction for 8-Williamson matrices we construct 8-Williamson matrices in all odd orders up to and including 35. We additionally enumerate all Williamson matrices whose orders are divisible by 3 and less than 70, finding one previously unknown set of Williamson matrices of order 63.
Stable set polytopes and their 1-skeleta
We characterize the edges of two classes of $0/1$-polytopes. The first class corresponds to the stable set polytope of a graph $G$ and includes chain polytopes of posets, some instances of matroid independence polytopes, as well as newly-defined polytopes whose vertices correspond to noncrossing set partitions. In analogy with matroid basis polytopes, the second class is obtained by considering the stable sets of maximal cardinality. We investigate how the class of $0/1$-polytopes whose edges satisfy our characterization is situated within the hierarchy of $0/1$-polytopes. This includes the class of matroid polytopes. We also study the diameter of these classes of polytopes and improve slightly on the Hirsch bound.

The shift bound for abelian codes and generalizations of the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group. If $f: G\rightarrow \bC$ is a nonzero function with Fourier transform $\hf$, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle states that $|\supp(f)||\supp(\hf)|\geq |G|$. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we present the shift bound for abelian codes with a streamlined proof. Second, we use the shifting technique to prove a generalization and a sharpening of the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. In particular, the sharpened uncertainty principle states, with notation above, that $|\supp(f)||\supp(\hf)|\geq |G|+|\supp(f)|-|H(\supp(f))|$, where $H(\supp(f))$ is the stabilizer of $\supp(f)$ in $G$.

On graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -3 and their lattices

In this paper, we show that a connected graph with smallest eigenvalue at least -3 and large enough minimal degree is 2-integrable. This result generalizes a 1977 result of Hoffman for connected graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -2.
Rigidity of linearly-constrained frameworks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of characterising the generic rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which each vertex is constrained to lie in a given affine subspace. The special case when $d=2$ was previously solved by I. Streinu and L. Theran in 2010. We will extend their characterisation to the case when $d\geq 3$ and each vertex is constrained to lie in an affine subspace of dimension $t$, when $t=1,2$ and also when $t\geq 3$ and $d\geq t(t-1)$. We then point out that results on body-bar frameworks obtained by N. Katoh and S. Tanigawa in 2013 can be used to characterise when a graph has a rigid realisation as a $d$-dimensional body-bar framework with a given set of linear constraints.

Envy-free cake division without assuming the players prefer nonempty pieces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider $n$ players having preferences over the connected pieces of a cake, identified with the interval $[0,1]$. A classical theorem, found independently by Stromquist and by Woodall in 1980, ensures that, under mild conditions, it is possible to divide the cake into $n$ connected pieces and assign these pieces to the players in an envy-free manner, i.e, such that no player strictly prefers a piece that has not been assigned to her. One of these conditions, considered as crucial, is that no player is happy with an empty piece. We prove that, even if this condition is not satisfied, it is still possible to get such a division when $n$ is a prime number or is equal to $4$. When $n$ is at most $3$, this has been previously proved by Erel Segal-Halevi, who conjectured that the result holds for any $n$. The main step in our proof is a new combinatorial lemma in topology, close to a conjecture by Segal-Halevi and which is reminiscent of the celebrated Sperner lemma: instead of restricting the labels that can appear on each face of the simplex, the lemma considers labelings that enjoy a certain symmetry on the boundary.

Dold's Theorem from Viewpoint of Strong Compatibility Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a non-trivial finite group. The well-known Dold's theorem states that: There is no continuous $G$-equivariant map from an $n$-connected simplicial $G$-complex to a free simplicial $G$-complex of dimension at most $n$. In this paper, we give a new generalization of Dold's theorem, by replacing "dimension at most $n$" with a sharper combinatorial parameter. Indeed, this parameter is the chromatic number of a new family of graphs, called strong compatibility graphs, associated to the target space. Moreover, in a series of examples, we will see that one can hope to infer much more information from this generalization than ordinary Dold's theorem. In particular, we show that this new parameter is significantly better than the dimension of target space "for almost all free $\mathbb{Z}_2$-simplicial complex." In addition, some other applications of strong compatibility graphs will be presented as well. In particular, a new way for constructing triangle-free graphs with high chromatic numbers from an n-sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$, and some new results on the limitations of topological methods for determining the chromatic number of graphs will be given.

Ends, tangles and critical vertex sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that an arbitrary infinite graph $G$ can be compactified by its ends plus its critical vertex sets, where a finite set $X$ of vertices of an infinite graph is critical if its deletion leaves some infinitely many components each with neighbourhood precisely equal to $X$. We further provide a concrete separation system whose $\aleph_0$-tangles are precisely the ends plus critical vertex sets. Our tangle compactification $\vert G\vert_Γ$ is a quotient of Diestel's (denoted by $\vert G\vert_Θ$), and both use tangles to compactify a graph in much the same way as the ends of a locally finite and connected graph compactify it in its Freudenthal compactification. Finally, generalising both Diestel's construction of $\vert G\vert_Θ$ and our construction of $\vert G\vert_Γ$, we show that $G$ can be compactified by every inverse limit of compactifications of the sets of components obtained by deleting a finite set of vertices. Diestel's $\vert G\vert_Θ$ is the finest such compactification, and our $\vert G\vert_Γ$ is the coarsest one. Both coincide if and only if all tangles are ends. This answers two questions of Diestel.

Maximal Ferrers Diagram Codes: Constructions and Genericity Considerations
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper investigates the construction of rank-metric codes with specified Ferrers diagram shapes. These codes play a role in the multilevel construction for subspace codes. A conjecture from 2009 provides an upper bound for the dimension of a rank-metric code with given specified Ferrers diagram shape and rank distance. While the conjecture in its generality is wide open, several cases have been established in the literature. This paper contributes further cases of Ferrers diagrams and ranks for which the conjecture holds true. In addition, the proportion of maximal Ferrers diagram codes within the space of all rank-metric codes with the same shape and dimension is investigated. Special attention is being paid to MRD codes. It is shown that for growing field size the limiting proportion depends highly on the Ferrers diagram. For instance, for $[m\times 2]$-MRD codes with rank~$2$ this limiting proportion is close to $1/e$.
Pure gaps on curves with many rational places
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 53 (2018), 287 - 308 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the algebraic curve defined by $y^m = f(x)$ where $m \geq 2$ and $f(x)$ is a rational function over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We extend the concept of pure gap to {\bf c}-gap and obtain a criterion to decide when an $s$-tuple is a {\bf c}-gap at $s$ rational places on the curve. As an application, we obtain many families of pure gaps at two rational places on curves with many rational places.
