Positive association of the oriented percolation cluster in randomly oriented graphs
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 28(6):811-815 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
Consider any fixed graph whose edges have been randomly and independently oriented, and write $\{S \leadsto i\}$ to indicate that there is an oriented path going from a vertex $s \in S$ to vertex $i$. Narayanan (2016) proved that for any set $S$ and any two vertices $i$ and $j$, $\{S \leadsto i\}$ and $\{S \leadsto j\}$ are positively correlated. His proof relies on the Ahlswede-Daykin inequality, a rather advanced tool of probabilistic combinatorics. In this short note, I give an elementary proof of the following, stronger result: writing $V$ for the vertex set of the graph, for any source set $S$, the events $\{S \leadsto i\}$, $i \in V$, are positively associated -- meaning that the expectation of the product of increasing functionals of the family $\{S \leadsto i\}$ for $i \in V$ is greater than the product of their expectations.

Algebra and valuations related to the Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is a chapter destined for the book "Handbook of the Tutte Polynomial". The chapter is a composite. The first part is a brief introduction to Orlik-Solomon algebras. The second part sketches the theory of evaluative functions on matroid base polytopes and in particular, the G-invariant (as the subject is known late 2015). A third very short section is on Hopf-algebra or coalgebra structures in Tutte polynomial theory.

Quantum Walks on Embeddings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new type of discrete quantum walks, called vertex-face walks, based on orientable embeddings. We first establish a spectral correspondence between the transition matrix $U$ and the vertex-face incidence structure. Using the incidence graph, we derive a formula for the principal logarithm of $U^2$, and find conditions for its underlying digraph to be an oriented graph. In particular, we show this happens if the vertex-face incidence structure forms a partial geometric design. We also explore properties of vertex-face walks on the covers of a graph. Finally, we study a non-classical behavior of vertex-face walks.
Centroidal localization game
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 25 (2018), #P4.62, 19pp • View Publication • BIB
One important problem in a network is to locate an (invisible) moving entity by using distance-detectors placed at strategical locations. For instance, the metric dimension of a graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ of detectors placed in some vertices $\{v_1,\cdots,v_k\}$ such that the vector $(d_1,\cdots,d_k)$ of the distances $d(v_i,r)$ between the detectors and the entity's location $r$ allows to uniquely determine $r \in V(G)$. In a more realistic setting, instead of getting the exact distance information, given devices placed in $\{v_1,\cdots,v_k\}$, we get only relative distances between the entity's location $r$ and the devices (for every $1\leq i,j\leq k$, it is provided whether $d(v_i,r) >$, $<$, or $=$ to $d(v_j,r)$). The centroidal dimension of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of devices required to locate the entity in this setting. We consider the natural generalization of the latter problem, where vertices may be probed sequentially until the moving entity is located. At every turn, a set $\{v_1,\cdots,v_k\}$ of vertices is probed and then the relative distances between the vertices $v_i$ and the current location $r$ of the entity are given. If not located, the moving entity may move along one edge. Let $ζ^* (G)$ be the minimum $k$ such that the entity is eventually located, whatever it does, in the graph $G$. We prove that $ζ^* (T)\leq 2$ for every tree $T$ and give an upper bound on $ζ^*(G\square H)$ in cartesian product of graphs $G$ and $H$. Our main result is that $ζ^* (G)\leq 3$ for any outerplanar graph $G$. We then prove that $ζ^* (G)$ is bounded by the pathwidth of $G$ plus 1 and that the optimization problem of determining $ζ^* (G)$ is NP-hard in general graphs. Finally, we show that approximating (up to any constant distance) the entity's location in the Euclidean plane requires at most two vertices per turn.
Clique-width and Well-Quasi-Ordering of Triangle-Free Graph Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Daligault, Rao and Thomassé asked whether every hereditary graph class that is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph relation has bounded clique-width. Lozin, Razgon and Zamaraev (JCTB 2017+) gave a negative answer to this question, but their counterexample is a class that can only be characterised by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. This raises the issue of whether the question has a positive answer for finitely defined hereditary graph classes. Apart from two stubborn cases, this has been confirmed when at most two induced subgraphs $H_1,H_2$ are forbidden. We confirm it for one of the two stubborn cases, namely for the $(H_1,H_2)=(\mbox{triangle},P_2+P_4)$ case, by proving that the class of $(\mbox{triangle},P_2+P_4)$-free graphs has bounded clique-width and is well-quasi-ordered. Our technique is based on a special decomposition of $3$-partite graphs. We also use this technique to prove that the class of $(\mbox{triangle},P_1+P_5)$-free graphs, which is known to have bounded clique-width, is well-quasi-ordered. Our results enable us to complete the classification of graphs $H$ for which the class of $(\mbox{triangle},H)$-free graphs is well-quasi-ordered.

Minimum co-degree condition for perfect matchings in k-partite k-graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a $k$-partite $k$-graph with $n$ vertices in each partition class, and let $δ_{k-1}(H)$ denote the minimum co-degree of $H$. We characterize those $H$ with $δ_{k-1}(H) \geq n/2$ and with no perfect matching. As a consequence we give an affirmative answer to the following question of Rödl and Ruciński: If $k$ is even or $n \not\equiv 2 \pmod 4$, does $δ_{k-1}(H) \geq n/2$ imply that $H$ has a perfect matching? We also give an example indicating that it is not sufficient to impose this degree bound on only two types of $(k-1)$-sets.

An asymptotic bound for the strong chromatic number
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 768-776 • View Publication • BIB
The strong chromatic number $χ_{\text{s}}(G)$ of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is the least number $r$ with the following property: after adding $r \lceil n/r \rceil - n$ isolated vertices to $G$ and taking the union with any collection of spanning disjoint copies of $K_r$ in the same vertex set, the resulting graph has a proper vertex-colouring with $r$ colours. We show that for every $c > 0$ and every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G) \ge cn$, $χ_{\text{s}}(G) \leq (2 + o(1)) Δ(G)$, which is asymptotically best possible.

Asymptotically optimal Boolean functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The largest Hamming distance between a Boolean function in $n$ variables and the set of all affine Boolean functions in $n$ variables is known as the covering radius $ρ_n$ of the $[2^n,n+1]$ Reed-Muller code. This number determines how well Boolean functions can be approximated by linear Boolean functions. We prove that \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}2^{n/2}-ρ_n/2^{n/2-1}=1, \] which resolves a conjecture due to Patterson and Wiedemann from 1983.

A sufficient condition for a graph with boxicity at most its chromatic number
A box in Euclidean $k$-space is the Cartesian product of $k$ closed intervals on the real line. The boxicity of a graph $G$, denoted by $\text{box}(G)$, is the minimum nonnegative integer $k$ such that $G$ can be isomorphic to the intersection graph of a family of boxes in Euclidean $k$-space. In this paper, we present a sufficient condition for a graph $G$ under which $\text{box}(G)\leq χ(G)$ holds, where $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of $G$. Bhowmick and Chandran (2010) proved that $\text{box}(G)\leq χ(G)$ holds for a graph $G$ with no asteroidal triples. We prove that $\text{box}(G)\leq χ(G)$ holds for a graph $G$ in a special family of circulant graphs with an asteroidal triple.

Scaling limits of Cayley graphs with polynomially growing balls
Benjamini, Finucane and the first author have shown that if (G_n,S_n) is a sequence of Cayley graphs such that |S_n^n|=O(n^D|S_n|), then the sequence (G_n,d_{S_n}/n) is relatively compact for the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and every cluster point is a connected nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant sub-Finsler metric. In this paper we show that the dimension of such a cluster point is bounded by D, and that, under the stronger bound |S_n^n|=O(n^D), the homogeneous dimension of a cluster point is bounded by D. Our approach is roughly to use a well-known structure theorem for approximate groups due to Breuillard, Green and Tao to replace S_n^n with a coset nilprogression of bounded rank, and then to use results about nilprogressions from a previous paper of ours to study the ultralimits of such coset nilprogressions. As an application we bound the dimension of the scaling limit of a sequence of vertex-transitive graphs of large diameter. We also recover and effectivise parts of an argument of Tao concerning the further growth of single set S satisfying the bound |S^n| < Mn^D|S|.

A flag variety for the Delta Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$, up to a minor twist. The variety $X_{n,k}$ has a cellular decomposition with cells $C_w$ indexed by length $n$ words $w = w_1 \dots w_n$ in the alphabet $\{1, 2, \dots, k\}$ in which each letter appears at least once. When $k = n$, the variety $X_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to the flag variety. We give a presentation for the cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ and describe polynomial representatives for the classes $[ \overline{C}_w]$ of the closures of the cells $C_w$; these representatives generalize the classical Schubert polynomials.
Shellability is NP-complete
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every $d\geq 2$, deciding if a pure, $d$-dimensional, simplicial complex is shellable is NP-hard, hence NP-complete. This resolves a question raised, e.g., by Danaraj and Klee in 1978. Our reduction also yields that for every $d \ge 2$ and $k \ge 0$, deciding if a pure, $d$-dimensional, simplicial complex is $k$-decomposable is NP-hard. For $d \ge 3$, both problems remain NP-hard when restricted to contractible pure $d$-dimensional complexes. Another simple corollary of our result is that it is NP-hard to decide whether a given poset is CL-shellable.

Can $n^d + 1$ unit right $d$-simplices cover a right $d$-simplex with shortest side $n + ε$?
In a famous short paper, Conway and Soifer show that $n^2 + 2$ equilateral triangles with edge length 1 can cover one with side $n + ε$. We provide a generalization to $d$ dimensions.

The Hilbert-Galton board
Published in ALEA - Latin American Journal of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, 15(2), 755-774, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Hilbert-Galton board as a variant of the classical Galton board. Balls fall into a row of bins at a rate depending on the bin, and at random times, each bin gets shifted one unit to the right and an empty bin is added to the left. We compute the stationary distribution of this Markov chain and show the existence of an enriched Markov chain on triangular arrays of numbers which projects down to the Hilbert-Galton board. We also define finite-ball projections of the Hilbert-Galton board, for which we compute the stationary distribution, the full spectrum and the grand coupling time.

Powers of Ideals Associated to $(C_4, 2K_2)$-free Graphs
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 223 (2019), no. 7, 3071-3080 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a $(C_4, 2K_2)$-free graph with edge ideal $I(G)\subset \Bbbk[x_1,\dots , x_n]$. We show that $I(G)^s$ has linear resolution for every $s\geq 2$. Also, we show that every power of the vertex cover ideal of $G$ has linear quotients. As a result, we describe the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of $I(G)^{\vee}$ in terms of the maximum degree of $G$.

Domination structure for number three
From a research of several recent papers, in the first part, we are concerned with domination number in cubic graphs and give a sufficient condition of Reed's conjecture. In the second part, from a perspective, we study the structure of a minimum dominating set in 3-connected graphs. It is derived from a collection of cycles with length 0 mod 3.

Non-spanning lattice 3-polytopes
Published in J. Combin. Th., Ser. A. 161 (January 2019), 112-133 • View Publication • BIB
We completely classify non-spanning $3$-polytopes, by which we mean lattice $3$-polytopes whose lattice points do not affinely span the lattice. We show that, except for six small polytopes (all having between five and eight lattice points), every non-spanning $3$-polytope $P$ has the following simple description: $P\cap \mathbb{Z}^3$ consists of either (1) two lattice segments lying in parallel and consecutive lattice planes or (2) a lattice segment together with three or four extra lattice points placed in a very specific manner. From this description we conclude that all the empty tetrahedra in a non-spanning $3$-polytope $P$ have the same volume and they form a triangulation of $P$, and we compute the $h^*$-vectors of all non-spanning $3$-polytopes. We also show that all spanning $3$-polytopes contain a unimodular tetrahedron, except for two particular $3$-polytopes with five lattice points.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. XI. Orientations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix an oriented graph H, and let G be a graph with bounded clique number and very large chromatic number. If we somehow orient its edges, must there be an induced subdigraph isomorphic to H? Kierstead and Rodl raised this question for two specific kinds of digraph H: the three-edge path, with the first and last edges both directed towards the interior; and stars (with many edges directed out and many directed in). Aboulker et al subsequently conjectured that the answer is affirmative in both cases. We give affirmative answers to both questions.
