Forbidden pairs for equality of edge-connectivity and minimum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a class of given graphs. A graph $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if $G$ contains no induced copies of $H$ for any $H \in \mathcal{H}$. In this article, we characterize all pairs $\{R,S\}$ of graphs such that every connected $\{R,S\}$-free graph has the same edge-connectivity and minimum degree.
Hook removal operators on the odd Young graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we consider hook removal operators on odd partitions, i.e., partitions labelling odd-degree irreducible characters of finite symmetric groups. In particular we complete the discussion, started by Isaacs, Navarro, Olsson and Tiep in 2016, concerning the commutativity of such operators.

Representation stability on the cohomology of complements of subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study representation stability in the sense of Church and Farb of sequences of cohomology groups of complements of arrangements of linear subspaces in real and complex space as $S_n$-modules. We consider arrangement of linear subspaces defined by sets of diagonal equalities $x_i = x_j$ and invariant under the action of $S_n$ permuting the coordinates. We provide bounds on the point when stabilization occurs and an alternative proof for the fact that stabilization happens. The latter is a special case of a very general stabilization result of Gadish and for the pure braid space the result is part of the work of Church and Farb. For this space better stabilization bounds were obtained by Hersh and Reiner.

The second largest eigenvalues of some Cayley graphs on alternating groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A_n$ denote the alternating group of degree $n$ with $n\geq 3$. The alternating group graph $AG_n$, extended alternating group graph $EAG_n$ and complete alternating group graph $CAG_n$ are the Cayley graphs $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_1)$, $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_2)$ and $\mathrm{Cay}(A_n,T_3)$, respectively, where $T_1=\{(1,2,i),(1,i,2)\mid 3\leq i\leq n\}$, $T_2=\{(1,i,j),(1,j,i)\mid 2\leq i<j\leq n\}$ and $T_3=\{(i,j,k),(i,k,j)\mid 1\leq i<j<k\leq n\}$. In this paper, we determine the second largest eigenvalues of $AG_n$, $EAG_n$ and $CAG_n$.

Closing in on Hill's conjecture
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 33 (2019) 1261-1276 • View Publication • BIB
Borrowing László Székely's lively expression, we show that Hill's conjecture is "asymptotically at least 98.5% true". This long-standing conjecture states that the crossing number cr($K_n$) of the complete graph $K_n$ is $H(n) := \frac{1}{4}\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor \lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\rfloor$, for all $n\ge 3$. This has been verified only for $n\le 12$. Using flag algebras, Norin and Zwols obtained the best known asymptotic lower bound for the crossing number of complete bipartite graphs, from which it follows that for every sufficiently large $n$, cr$(K_n) > 0.905\, H(n)$. Also using flag algebras, we prove that asymptotically cr$(K_n)$ is at least $0.985\, H(n)$. We also show that the spherical geodesic crossing number of $K_n$ is asymptotically at least $0.996\, H(n)$.

On the Brownian separable permuton
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 29(2), 241-266 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
The Brownian separable permuton is a random probability measure on the unit square, which was introduced by Bassino, Bouvel, Féray, Gerin, Pierrot (2016) as the scaling limit of the diagram of the uniform separable permutation as size grows to infinity. We show that, almost surely, the permuton is the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the graph of a random measure-preserving function associated to a Brownian excursion whose strict local minima are decorated with i.i.d. signs. As a consequence, its support is almost surely totally disconnected, has Hausdorff dimension one, and enjoys self-similarity properties inherited from those of the Brownian excursion. The density function of the averaged permuton is computed and a connection with the shuffling of the Brownian continuum random tree is explored.
The multiplicative Zagreb indices of graphs with given connectivity or number of pendant vertices
For a graph $G$, the first multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_1(G) $ is the product of squares of vertex degrees, and the second multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_2(G) $ is the product of products of degrees of pairs of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we explore graphs with extremal $Π_{1}(G)$ and $Π_{2}(G)$ in terms of (edge) connectivity and pendant vertices. The corresponding extremal graphs are characterized with given connectivity at most $k$ and $p$ pendant vertices. In addition, the maximum and minimum values of $\prod_1(G) $ and $\prod_2(G) $ are provided. Our results extend and enrich some known conclusions.

Recurrence relations for binomial-Eulerian polynomials
Binomial-Eulerian polynomials were introduced by Postnikov, Reiner and Williams. In this paper, properties of the binomial-Eulerian polynomials, including recurrence relations and generating functions are studied. We present three constructive proofs of the recurrence relations for binomial-Eulerian polynomials. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the Betti number of the complement of the k-equal real hyperplane arrangement.

Universal Tutte characters via combinatorial coalgebras
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 1 (2018) no. 5, p. 603-651 • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial is the most general invariant of matroids and graphs that can be computed recursively by deleting and contracting edges. We generalize this invariant to any class of combinatorial objects with deletion and contraction operations, associating to each such class a universal Tutte character by a functorial procedure. We show that these invariants satisfy a universal property and convolution formulae similar to the Tutte polynomial. With this machinery we recover classical invariants for delta-matroids, matroid perspectives, relative and colored matroids, generalized permutohedra, and arithmetic matroids, and produce some new convolution formulae. Our principal tools are combinatorial coalgebras and their convolution algebras. Our results generalize in an intrinsic way the recent results of Krajewski--Moffatt--Tanasa.
On chromatic indices of finite affine spaces
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea-2019 • View Publication • BIB
The pseudoachromatic index of the finite affine space $\mathrm{AG}(n,q),$ denoted by $ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q)),$ is the the maximum number of colors in any complete line-coloring of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q).$ When the coloring is also proper, the maximum number of colors is called the achromatic index of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q).$ We prove that if $n$ is even then $ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q))\sim q^{1.5n-1}$; while when $n$ is odd the value is bounded by $q^{1.5(n-1)}<ψ'(\mathrm{AG}(n,q))<q^{1.5n-1}$. Moreover, we prove that the achromatic index of $\mathrm{AG}(n,q)$ is $q^{1.5n-1}$ for even $n,$ and we provides the exact values of both indices in the planar case.

Scattering Forms and the Positive Geometry of Kinematics, Color and the Worldsheet
Published • View Publication • BIB
The search for a theory of the S-Matrix has revealed surprising geometric structures underlying amplitudes ranging from the worldsheet to the amplituhedron, but these are all geometries in auxiliary spaces as opposed to kinematic space where amplitudes live. In this paper, we propose a novel geometric understanding of amplitudes for a large class of theories. The key is to think of amplitudes as differential forms directly on kinematic space. We explore this picture for a wide range of massless theories in general spacetime dimensions. For the bi-adjoint cubic scalar, we establish a direct connection between its "scattering form" and a classic polytope--the associahedron--known to mathematicians since the 1960's. We find an associahedron living naturally in kinematic space, and the tree amplitude is simply the "canonical form" associated with this "positive geometry". Basic physical properties such as locality, unitarity and novel "soft" limits are fully determined by the geometry. Furthermore, the moduli space for the open string worldsheet has also long been recognized as an associahedron. We show that the scattering equations act as a diffeomorphism between this old "worldsheet associahedron" and the new "kinematic associahedron", providing a geometric interpretation and novel derivation of the bi-adjoint CHY formula. We also find "scattering forms" on kinematic space for Yang-Mills and the Non-linear Sigma Model, which are dual to the color-dressed amplitudes despite having no explicit color factors. This is possible due to a remarkable fact--"Color is Kinematics"--whereby kinematic wedge products in the scattering forms satisfy the same Jacobi relations as color factors. Finally, our scattering forms are well-defined on the projectivized kinematic space, a property that provides a geometric origin for color-kinematics duality.

Counting paths in perfect trees
We present some exact expressions for the number of paths of a given length in a perfect $m$-ary tree. We first count the paths in perfect rooted $m$-ary trees and then use the results to determine the number of paths in perfect unrooted $m$-ary trees, extending a known result for binary trees.

Refinements of two identities on $(n,m)$-Dyck paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
For integers $n, m$ with $n \geq 1$ and $0 \leq m \leq n$, an $(n,m)$-Dyck path is a lattice path in the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}$ using up steps $(0,1)$ and down steps $(1,0)$ that goes from the origin $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,n)$ and contains exactly $m$ up steps below the line $y=x$. The classical Chung-Feller theorem says that the total number of $(n,m)$-Dyck path is independent of $m$ and is equal to the $n$-th Catalan number $C_n=\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$. For any integer $k$ with $1 \leq k \leq n$, let $p_{n,m,k}$ be the total number of $(n,m)$-Dyck paths with $k$ peaks. Ma and Yeh proved that $p_{n,m,k}$=$p_{n,n-m,n-k}$ for $0 \leq m \leq n$, and $p_{n,m,k}+p_{n,m,n-k}=p_{n,m+1,k}+p_{n,m+1,n-k}$ for $1 \leq m \leq n-2$. In this paper we give bijective proofs of these two results. Using our bijections, we also get refined enumeration results on the numbers $p_{n,m,k}$ and $p_{n,m,k}+p_{n,m,n-k}$ according to the starting and ending steps.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. XII. Distant stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Gyarfas-Sumner conjecture asserts that if H is a tree then every graph with bounded clique number and very large chromatic number contains H as an induced subgraph. This is still open, although it has been proved for a few simple families of trees, including trees of radius two, some special trees of radius three, and subdivided stars. These trees all have the property that their vertices of degree more than two are clustered quite closely together. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for two families of trees which do not have this restriction. As special cases, these families contain all double-ended brooms and two-legged caterpillars.

Arrangements of ideal type are inductively free
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extending earlier work by Sommers and Tymoczko, in 2016 Abe, Barakat, Cuntz, Hoge, and Terao established that each arrangement of ideal type $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$ stemming from an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ in the set of positive roots of a reduced root system is free. Recently, Röhrle showed that a large class of the $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$ satisfy the stronger property of inductive freeness and conjectured that this property holds for all $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$. In this article, we confirm this conjecture.

Identification of Strong Edges in AMP Chain Graphs
Published in UAI 2018 • Search Publication
The essential graph is a distinguished member of a Markov equivalence class of AMP chain graphs. However, the directed edges in the essential graph are not necessarily strong or invariant, i.e. they may not be shared by every member of the equivalence class. Likewise for the undirected edges. In this paper, we develop a procedure for identifying which edges in an essential graph are strong. We also show how this makes it possible to bound some causal effects when the true chain graph is unknown.

Vertex partitions of $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graphs
A graph is $(k_1,k_2)$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into a graph with maximum degree at most $k_1$ and and a graph with maximum degree at most $k_2$. We show that every $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,6)$-colorable. We also show that deciding whether a $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,3)$-colorable is NP-complete.

Decomposing edge-coloured complete symmetric digraphs into monochromatic paths
Confirming and extending a conjecture by Guggiari, we show that every countable $(r+1)$-edge-coloured complete symmetric digraph containing no directed paths of edge-length $\ell_i$ for any colour $i\leq r$ can be covered by $\prod_{i\leq r} \ell_i$ pairwise disjoint monochromatic directed paths in colour $r+1$.

The decomposition of 0-Hecke modules associated to quasisymmetric Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Tewari and van Willigenburg constructed modules of the 0-Hecke algebra that are mapped to the quasisymmetric Schur functions by the quasisymmetric characteristic and decomposed them into a direct sum of certain submodules. We show that these submodules are indecomposable by determining their endomorphism rings.

Quantum Discrepancy: A Non-Commutative Version of Combinatorial Discrepancy
Published in Electron. J. Combin. vol. 27, issue 2, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce a notion of quantum discrepancy, a non-commutative version of combinatorial discrepancy which is defined for projection systems, i.e. finite sets of orthogonal projections, as non-commutative counterparts of set systems. We show that besides its natural algebraic formulation, quantum discrepancy, when restricted to set systems, has a probabilistic interpretation in terms of determinantal processes. Determinantal processes are a family of point processes with a rich algebraic structure. A common feature of this family is the local repulsive behavior of points. Alishahi and Zamani (2015) exploit this repelling property to construct low-discrepancy point configurations on the sphere. We give an upper bound for quantum discrepancy in terms of $N$, the dimension of the space, and $M$, the size of the projection system, which is tight in a wide range of parameters $N$ and $M$. Then we investigate the relation of these two kinds of discrepancies, i.e. combinatorial and quantum, when restricted to set systems, and bound them in terms of each other.
