In this paper we construct functional codes from Denniston maximal arcs. For $q=2^{4n+2}$ we obtain linear codes with parameters $[(\sqrt{q}-1)(q+1),5,d]_q$ where $\lim_{q \to +\infty} d=(\sqrt{q}-1)q-3\sqrt{q}$. We also find for $q=16,32$ a number of linear codes which appear to have larger minimum distance with respect to the known codes with same length and dimension.
A structural characterisation of Av(1324) and new bounds on its growth rate

We establish an improved lower bound of 10.271 for the exponential growth rate of the class of permutations avoiding the pattern 1324, and an improved upper bound of 13.5. These results depend on a new exact structural characterisation of 1324-avoiders as a subclass of an infinite staircase grid class, together with precise asymptotics of a small domino subclass whose enumeration we relate to West-two-stack-sortable permutations and planar maps. The bounds are established by carefully combining copies of the dominoes in particular ways consistent with the structural characterisation. The lower bound depends on concentration results concerning the substructure of a typical domino, the determination of exactly when dominoes can be combined in the fewest distinct ways, and technical analysis of the resulting generating function.

We study a shift action defined on multipartitions and on residue multisets of their Young diagrams. We prove that the minimal orbit cardinality among all multipartitions associated to a given multiset depends only on the orbit cardinality of the multiset. Using abaci, this problem reduces to a convex optimisation problem over the integers with linear constraints. We solve it by proving an existence theorem for binary matrices with prescribed row, column and block sums. Finally, we give some applications to the representation theory of the Hecke algebra of the complex reflection group $G(r,p,n)$.
When are epsilon-nets small?

In many interesting situations the size of epsilon-nets depends only on $ε$ together with different complexity measures. The aim of this paper is to give a systematic treatment of such complexity measures arising in Discrete and Computational Geometry and Statistical Learning, and to bridge the gap between the results appearing in these two fields. As a byproduct, we obtain several new upper bounds on the sizes of epsilon-nets that generalize/improve the best known general guarantees. In particular, our results work with regimes when small epsilon-nets of size $o(\frac{1}ε)$ exist, which are not usually covered by standard upper bounds. Inspired by results in Statistical Learning we also give a short proof of the Haussler's upper bound on packing numbers.

The study of knots and links from a probabilistic viewpoint provides insight into the behavior of "typical" knots, and opens avenues for new constructions of knots and other topological objects with interesting properties. The knotting of random curves arises also in applications to the natural sciences, such as in the context of the structure of polymers. We present here several known and new randomized models of knots and links. We review the main known results on the knot distribution in each model. We discuss the nature of these models and the properties of the knots they produce. Of particular interest to us are finite type invariants of random knots, and the recently studied Petaluma model. We report on rigorous results and numerical experiments concerning the asymptotic distribution of such knot invariants. Our approach raises questions of universality and classification of the various random knot models.

We determine the BP-module structure, mod higher filtration, of the main part of the BP-homology of elementary abelian 2-groups. The action is related to symmetric polynomials and to Dickson invariants.

We describe and investigate a connection between the topology of isolated singularities of plane curves and the mutation equivalence, in the sense of cluster algebra theory, of the quivers associated with their morsifications.

Which $2$-regular subgraph $R$ of a cubic graph $G$ can be extended to a cycle double cover of $G$? We provide a condition which ensures that every $R$ satisfying this condition is part of a cycle double cover of $G$. As one consequence, we prove that every $2$-connected cubic graph which has a decomposition into a spanning tree and a $2$-regular subgraph $C$ consisting of $k$ circuits with $k\leq 3$, has a cycle double cover containing $C$.
Kohnert polynomials

We associate a polynomial to any diagram of unit cells in the first quadrant of the plane using Kohnert's algorithm for moving cells down. In this way, for every weak composition one can choose a cell diagram with corresponding row-counts, with each choice giving rise to a combinatorially-defined basis of polynomials. These Kohnert bases provide a simultaneous generalization of Schubert polynomials and Demazure characters for the general linear group. Using the monomial and fundamental slide bases defined earlier by the authors, we show that Kohnert polynomials stabilize to quasisymmetric functions that are nonnegative on the fundamental basis for quasisymmetric functions. For initial applications, we define and study two new Kohnert bases. The elements of one basis are conjecturally Schubert-positive and stabilize to the skew-Schur functions; the elements of the other basis stabilize to a new basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions.
Spanning Lattice Polytopes and the Uniform Position Principle
A lattice polytope $P$ is called IDP if any lattice point in its $k$th dilate is a sum of $k$ lattice points in $P$. In 1991 Stanley proved a strong inequality in Ehrhart theory for IDP lattice polytopes. We show that his conclusion holds under much milder assumptions, namely if the lattice polytope $P$ is spanning, i.e., any lattice point of the ambient lattice is an integer affine combination of lattice points in $P$. As an application, we get a generalization of Hibi's Lower Bound Theorem. Our proof relies on generalizing Bertini's theorem to the semistandard situation and Harris' Uniform Position Principle to certain curves in weighted projective space.

We prove an infinite Ramsey theorem for noncommutative graphs realized as unital self-adjoint subspaces of linear operators acting on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. Specifically, we prove that if V is such a subspace, then provided there is no obvious obstruction, there is an infinite rank projection P with the property that the compression PVP is either maximal or minimal in a certain natural sense.
One can hear the Euler characteristic of a simplicial complex
We prove that that the number p of positive eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian L of a finite abstract simplicial complex G matches the number b of even dimensional simplices in G and that the number n of negative eigenvalues matches the number f of odd-dimensional simplices in G. The Euler characteristic X(G) of G therefore can be spectrally described as X(G)=p-n. This is in contrast to the more classical Hodge Laplacian H which acts on the same Hilbert space, where X(G) is not yet known to be accessible from the spectrum of H. Given an ordering of G coming from a build-up as a CW complex, every simplex x in G is now associated to a unique eigenvector of L and the correspondence is computable. The Euler characteristic is now not only the potential energy summing over all g(x,y) with g=L^{-1} but also agrees with a logarithmic energy tr(log(i L)) 2/(i pi) of the spectrum of L. We also give here examples of L-isospectral but non-isomorphic abstract finite simplicial complexes. One example shows that we can not hear the cohomology of the complex.

Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are analogues of Schur polynomials in the K-theory of Grassmannians. We build dual families of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials using Schur operators. With this approach we prove skew Cauchy identity and then derive various applications: skew Pieri rules, dual filtrations of Young's lattice, generating series and enumerative identities. We also give a new explanation of the finite expansion property for products of Grothendieck polynomials.
Inverse Perron values and connectivity of a uniform hypergraph

In this paper, we show that a uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$ is connected if and only if one of its inverse Perron values is larger than $0$. We give some bounds on the bipartition width, isoperimetric number and eccentricities of $\mathcal{G}$ in terms of inverse Perron values. By using the inverse Perron values, we give an estimation of the edge connectivity of a $2$-design, and determine the explicit edge connectivity of a symmetric design. Moreover, relations between the inverse Perron values and resistance distance of a connected graph are presented.
A combinatorial model for tame frieze patterns
Let $R$ be an arbitrary subset of a commutative ring. We introduce a combinatorial model for the set of tame frieze patterns with entries in $R$ based on a notion of irreducibility of frieze patterns. When $R$ is a ring, then a frieze pattern is reducible if and only if it contains an entry (not on the border) which is $1$ or $-1$. To my knowledge, this model generalizes simultaneously all previously presented models for tame frieze patterns bounded by $0$'s and $1$'s.
On the Threshold Problem for Latin Boxes

Let $m \leq n \leq k$. An $m \times n \times k$ 0-1 array is a Latin box if it contains exactly $mn$ ones, and has at most one $1$ in each line. As a special case, Latin boxes in which $m = n = k$ are equivalent to Latin squares.
Let $\mathcal{M}(m,n,k;p)$ be the distribution on $m \times n \times k$ 0-1 arrays where each entry is $1$ with probability $p$, independently of the other entries. The threshold question for Latin squares asks when $\mathcal{M}(n,n,n;p)$ contains a Latin square with high probability. More generally, when does $\mathcal{M}(m,n,k;p)$ support a Latin box with high probability?
Let $\varepsilon>0$. We give an asymptotically tight answer to this question in the special cases where $n=k$ and $m \leq \left(1-\varepsilon \right) n$, and where $n=m$ and $k \geq \left(1+\varepsilon \right) n$. In both cases, the threshold probability is $Θ\left( \log \left( n \right) / n \right)$. This implies threshold results for Latin rectangles and proper edge-colorings of $K_{n,n}$.

Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with $q$-Laplacian $L_{T}^{q}$. Let $GTS_n$ be the generalized tree shift poset on the set of unlabelled trees with $n$ vertices. We prove that for all $q \in R$, going up on $GTS_n$ has the following effect: the spectral radius and the second smallest eigenvalue of $L_{T}^{q}$ increase while the smallest eigenvalue of $L_{T}^{q}$ decreases. These generalize known results for eigenvalues of the Laplacian. As a corollary, we obtain consequences about the eigenvalues of $q,t$-Laplacians and exponential distance matrices of trees.
The local limit of the uniform spanning tree on dense graphs

Let $G$ be a connected graph in which almost all vertices have linear degrees and let $T$ be a uniform spanning tree of $G$. For any fixed rooted tree $F$ of height $r$ we compute the asymptotic density of vertices $v$ for which the $r$-ball around $v$ in $T$ is isomorphic to $F$. We deduce from this that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of such graphs converging to a graphon $W$, then the uniform spanning tree of $G_n$ locally converges to a multi-type branching process defined in terms of $W$.
As an application, we prove that in a graph with linear minimum degree, with high probability, the density of leaves in a uniform spanning tree is at least $1/e-o(1)$, the density of vertices of degree $2$ is at most $1/e+o(1)$ and the density of vertices of degree $k\geq 3$ is at most ${(k-2)^{k-2} \over (k-1)! e^{k-2}} + o(1)$. These bounds are sharp.
Invariants of partitions and representative elements
The symbol invariant is used to describe the Springer correspondence for the classical groups by Lusztig. And the fingerprint invariant can be used to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig map. They are invariants of rigid semisimple operators described by pairs of partitions $(λ^{'}, λ^{"})$. We construct a nice representative element of the rigid semisimple operators with the same symbol invariant. The fingerprint of the representative element can be obtained immediately. We also discuss the representative element of rigid semisimple operator with the same fingerprint invariant. Our construction can be regarded as the maps between these two invariants.

We prove that $\det A\leq 6^\frac{n}{6}$ whenever $A\in\{0,1\}^{n\times n}$ contains at most $2n$ ones. We also prove an upper bound on the determinant of matrices with the $k$-consecutive ones property, a generalisation of the consecutive ones property, where each row is allowed to have up to $k$ blocks of ones. Finally, we prove an upper bound on the determinant of a path-edge incidence matrix in a tree and use that to bound the leaf rank of a graph in terms of its order.
