Tusnády's problem, the transference principle, and non-uniform QMC sampling
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that for every $N \geq 1$ and $d \geq 1$ there exist point sets $x_1, \dots, x_N \in [0,1]^d$ whose discrepancy with respect to the Lebesgue measure is of order at most $(\log N)^{d-1} N^{-1}$. In a more general setting, the first author proved together with Josef Dick that for any normalized measure $μ$ on $[0,1]^d$ there exist points $x_1, \dots, x_N$ whose discrepancy with respect to $μ$ is of order at most $(\log N)^{(3d+1)/2} N^{-1}$. The proof used methods from combinatorial mathematics, and in particular a result of Banaszczyk on balancings of vectors. In the present note we use a version of the so-called transference principle together with recent results on the discrepancy of red-blue colorings to show that for any $μ$ there even exist points having discrepancy of order at most $(\log N)^{d-\frac12} N^{-1}$, which is almost as good as the discrepancy bound in the case of the Lebesgue measure.

Cutoff for random to random card shuffle
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we use the eigenvalues of the random to random card shuffle to prove a sharp upper bound for the total variation mixing time. Combined with the lower bound due to Subag, we prove that this walk exhibits cutoff at $\frac{3}{4} n \log n - \frac{1}{4}n\log\log{n}$ with window of order $n$, answering a conjecture of Diaconis.

Pretty $k$-clean monomial ideals and $k$-decomposable multicomplexes
We introduce pretty $k$-clean monomial ideals and $k$-decomposable multicomplexes, respectively, as the extensions of the notions of $k$-clean monomial ideals and $k$-decomposable simplicial complexes. We show that a multicomplex $Γ$ is $k$-decomposable if and only if its associated monomial ideal $I(Γ)$ is pretty $k$-clean. Also, we prove that an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ is pretty $k$-clean if and only if its polarization $I^p$ is $k$-clean. Our results extend and generalize some results due to Herzog-Popescu, Soleyman Jahan and the current author.

A new approximation to the geometric-arithmetic index
The concept of geometric-arithmetic index was introduced in the chemical graph theory recently, but it has shown to be useful. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize graphs extremal with respect to them.
New lower bounds for the Geometric-Arithmetic index
The concept of geometric-arithmetic index was introduced in the chemical graph theory recently, but it has shown to be useful. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Our main results provide lower bounds $GA_1(G)$ involving just the minimum and the maximum degree of the graph $G$.

Concerning partition regular matrices
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ is image partition regular provided that whenever $\mathbb N$ is finitely colored, there must be some $\vec{x}$ with entries from $\mathbb N$ such that all entries of $A\vec{x}$ are in some color class. In [6] and [8], the notion of centrally image partition regular matrices were introduced to extend the results of finite image partition regular matrices to infinite image partition regular matrices. It was shown that centrally image partition regular matrices are closed under diagonal sum. In the present paper, we show that the diagonal sum of two matrices, one of which comes from the class of all Milliken-Taylor matrices and the other from a suitable subclass of the class of all centrally image partition regular matrices is also image partition regular. This will produce more image partition regular matrices. We also study the multiple structures within one cell of a finite partition of $\mathbb N$ $\cdot$

Configuration spaces of graphs with certain permitted collisions
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $G$ is a graph with vertex set $V$, let Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ be the space of $n$-tuples of points on $G$, which are only allowed to overlap on elements of $V$. We think of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ as a configuration space of points on $G$, where points are allowed to collide on vertices. In this paper, we attempt to understand these spaces from two separate, but closely related, perspectives. Using techniques of combinatorial topology we compute the fundamental groups and homology groups of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ in the case where $G$ is a tree. Next, we use techniques of asymptotic algebra to prove statements about Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$, for general graphs $G$, whenever $n$ is sufficiently large. It is proven that, for general graphs, the homology groups exhibit generalized representation stability in the sense of previous work of the author.

Maximal rank in matrix spaces via graph matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the maximal rank in affine subspaces of symmetric or alternating matrices, in terms of the matching numbers of certain associated graphs. Applications include simple proofs of upper bounds on the dimension of such subspaces in terms of their maximal rank.

Betti numbers of complexes with highly Connected links
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Ser. A., 147(2017) 27-40 • View Publication • BIB
Let X be a k-dimensional simplicial complex such that the (k-j-2)-dimensional homology of the links of all j-dimensional simplices in X vanishes. An upper bound is given on the (k-1)-th Betti number of X. Examples based on sum complexes show that this bound is asymptotically sharp for all fixed j<k.

Set Matching: An Enhancement of the Hales-Jewett Pairing Strategy
Published • View Publication • BIB
When solving k-in-a-Row games, the Hales-Jewett pairing strategy [4] is a well-known strategy to prove that specific positions are (at most) a draw. It requires two empty squares per possible winning line (group) to be marked, i.e., with a coverage ratio of 2.0. In this paper we present a new strategy, called Set Matching. A matching set consists of a set of nodes (the markers), a set of possible winning lines (the groups), and a coverage set indicating how all groups are covered after every first initial move. This strategy needs less than two markers per group. As such it is able to prove positions in k-in-a-Row games to be draws, which cannot be proven using the Hales-Jewett pairing strategy. We show several efficient configurations with their matching sets. These include Cycle Configurations, BiCycle Configurations, and PolyCycle Configurations involving more than two cycles. Depending on configuration, the coverage ratio can be reduced to 1.14. Many examples in the domain of solving k-in-a-Row games are given, including the direct proof (without further investigation) that the empty 4 x 4 board is a draw for 4-in-a-Row.

Ultimate Positivity of Diagonals of Quasi-rational Functions
The problem to decide whether a given multivariate (quasi-)rational function has only positive coefficients in its power series expansion has a long history. It dates back to Szego in 1933 who showed certain quasi-rational function to be positive, in the sense that all the series coefficients are positive, using an involved theory of special functions. In contrast to the simplicity of the statement, the method was surprisingly difficult. This dependency motivated further research for positivity of (quasi-)rational functions. More and more (quasi-)rational functions have been proven to be positive, and some of the proofs are even quite simple. However, there are also others whose positivity are still open conjectures. In this talk, we focus on a less difficult but also interesting question to decide whether the diagonal of a given quasi-rational function is ultimately positive, especially for the one conjectured to be positive by Kauers in 2007. To solve this question, it suffices to compute the asymptotics of the diagonal coefficients, which can be done by the multivariate singularity analysis developed by Baryshnikov, Pemantle and Wilson. Note that the ultimate positivity is a necessary condition for the positivity, and therefore can be used to either exclude the nonpositive cases or further support the conjectural positivity.

A monodromy graph approach to the piecewise polynomiality of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants double Hurwitz numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hurwitz numbers count genus $g$, degree $d$ covers of the complex projective line with fixed branched locus and fixed ramification data. An equivalent description is given by factorisations in the symmetric group. Simple double Hurwitz numbers are a class of Hurwitz-type counts of specific interest. In recent years a related counting problem in the context of random matrix theory was introduced as so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers. These can be viewed as a desymmetrised version of the Hurwitz-problem. A combinatorial interpolation between simple and monotone double Hurwitz numbers was introduced as mixed double Hurwitz numbers and it was proved that these objects are piecewise polynomial in a certain sense. Moreover, the notion of strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers has risen interest as it is equivalent to a certain Grothendieck dessins d'enfant count. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial interpolation between simple, monotone and strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers as \textit{triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers}. Our aim is twofold: Using a connection between triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers and tropical covers in terms of so-called monodromy graphs, we give algorithms to compute the polynomials for triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in all genera using Erhart theory. We further use this approach to study the wall-crossing behaviour of triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in genus $0$ in terms of related Hurwitz-type counts. All those results specialise to the extremal cases of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants Hurwitz numbers.

Forbidden Families of Minimal Quadratic and Cubic Configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A matrix is \emph{simple} if it is a (0,1)-matrix and there are no repeated columns. Given a (0,1)-matrix $F$, we say a matrix $A$ has $F$ as a \emph{configuration}, denoted $F\prec A$, if there is a submatrix of $A$ which is a row and column permutation of $F$. Let $|A|$ denote the number of columns of $A$. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of matrices. We define the extremal function $\text{forb}(m, \mathcal{F}) = \max\{|A|\colon A \text{ is an }m-\text{rowed simple matrix and has no configuration } F\in\mathcal{F}\}$. We consider pairs $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,F_2\}$ such that $F_1$ and $F_2$ have no common extremal construction and derive that individually each $\text{forb}(m, F_i)$ has greater asymptotic growth than $\text{forb}(m, \mathcal{F})$, extending research started by Anstee and Koch.

Distant total sum distinguishing index of graphs
Published in Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 683-688 • View Publication • BIB
Let $c:V\cup E\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ be a proper total colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$. We say vertices $u,v\in V$ are sum distinguished if $c(u)+\sum_{e\ni u}c(e)\neq c(v)+\sum_{e\ni v}c(e)$. By $χ"_{Σ,r}(G)$ we denote the least integer $k$ admitting such a colouring $c$ for which every $u,v\in V$, $u\neq v$, at distance at most $r$ from each other are sum distinguished in $G$. For every positive integer $r$ an infinite family of examples is known with $χ"_{Σ,r}(G)=Ω(Δ^{r-1})$. In this paper we prove that $χ"_{Σ,r}(G)\leq (2+o(1))Δ^{r-1}$ for every integer $r\geq 3$ and each graph $G$, while $χ"_{Σ,2}(G)\leq (18+o(1))Δ$.
Obstructions for three-coloring and list three-coloring $H$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We characterize all graphs $H$ for which there are only finitely many minimal non-three-colorable $H$-free graphs. Such a characterization was previously known only in the case when $H$ is connected. This solves a problem posed by Golovach et al. As a second result, we characterize all graphs $H$ for which there are only finitely many $H$-free minimal obstructions for list 3-colorability.

One more remark on the adjoint polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
The adjoint polynomial of $G$ is \[h(G,x)=\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^{n-k}a_k(G)x^k,\] where $a_k(G)$ denotes the number of ways one can cover all vertices of the graph $G$ by exactly $k$ disjoint cliques of $G$. In this paper we show the the adjoint polynomial of a graph $G$ is a simple transformation of the independence polynomial of another graph $\widehat{G}$. This enables us to use the rich theory of independence polynomials to study the adjoint polynomials. In particular we a give new proofs of several theorems of R. Liu and P. Csikvári.
Sizes of Pentagonal Clusters in Fullerenes
Published in J. Math. Chem. 55 (2017) 1669-1682 • View Publication • BIB
Stability and chemistry, both exohedral and endohedral, of fullerenes are critically dependent on the distribution of their obligatory 12 pentagonal faces. It is well known that there are infinitely many IPR-fullerenes and that the pentagons in these fullerenes can be at an arbitrarily large distance from each other. IPR-fullerenes can be described as fullerenes in which each connected cluster of pentagons has size 1. In this paper we study the combinations of cluster sizes that can occur in fullerenes and whether the clusters can be at an arbitrarily large distance from each other. For each possible partition of the number 12, we are able to decide whether the partition describes the sizes of pentagon clusters in a possible fullerene, and state whether the different clusters can be at an arbitrarily large distance from each other. We will prove that all partitions with largest cluster of size 5 or less can occur in an infinite number of fullerenes with the clusters at an arbitrarily large distance of each other, that 9 partitions occur in only a finite number of fullerene isomers and that 15 partitions do not occur at all in fullerenes.
Resolving Stanley's $e$-positivity of claw-contractible-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In Stanley's seminal 1995 paper on the chromatic symmetric function, he stated that there was no known graph that was not contractible to the claw and whose chromatic symmetric function was not $e$-positive, namely, not a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions. We resolve this by giving infinite families of graphs that are not contractible to the claw and whose chromatic symmetric functions are not $e$-positive. Moreover, one such family is additionally claw-free, thus establishing that the $e$-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions is in general not dependent on the existence of an induced claw or of a contraction to a claw.

Laplacian, on the Sierpinski tetrahedron
Numerous work revolve around the Sierpinski gasket. Its three-dimensional analogue, the Sierpinski tetrahedron, obtained by means of an iterative process which consists in repeatedly contracting a regular 3-simplex to one half of its original height, put together four copies, the frontier corners of which coincide with the initial simplex, appears as a natural extension. Yet, very few works concern the Sierpinski tetrahedron in the existing literature. We go further and, after a detailed study, we give the explicit spectrum of the Laplacian, with a specific presentation of the first eigenvalues. This enables us to obtain an estimate of the spectral counting function (analogous of Weyl's law)
