Ordered p-median problems with neighborhoods
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we introduce a new variant of the $p$-median facility location problem in which it is assumed that the exact location of the potential facilities is unknown. Instead, each of the facilities must be located in a region around their initially assigned location (the neighborhood). In this problem, two main decisions have to be made simultaneously: the determination of the potential facilities that must be open to serve the demands of the customers and the location of the open facilities in their neighborhoods, at global minimum cost. We present several mixed integer non-linear programming formulations for a wide family of objective functions which are common in Location Analysis: ordered median functions. We also develop two math-heuristic approaches for solving the problem. We report the results of extensive computational experiments.

Toward the Schur expansion of Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Schur expansion of Macdonald polynomials indexed by partitions with second part at most two. This gives a uniform formula for both hook and two column partitions. The proof comes as a corollary to the result that generalized dual equivalence classes of permutations are unions of standard dual equivalence classes of permutations for certain cases, establishing an earlier conjecture of the author.

On Helmholtz free energy for finite abstract simplicial complexes
We prove a Gauss-Bonnet formula X(G) = sum_x K(x), where K(x)=(-1)^dim(x) (1-X(S(x))) is a curvature of a vertex x with unit sphere S(x) in the Barycentric refinement G1 of a simplicial complex G. K(x) is dual to (-1)^dim(x) for which Gauss-Bonnet is the definition of Euler characteristic X. Because the connection Laplacian L'=1+A' of G is unimodular, where A' is the adjacency matrix of of the connection graph G', the Green function values g(x,y) = (1+A')^-1_xy are integers and 1-X(S(x))=g(x,x). Gauss-Bonnet for K^+ reads therefore as str(g)=X(G), where str is the super trace. As g is a time-discrete heat kernel, this is a cousin to McKean-Singer str(exp(-Lt)) = X(G) for the Hodge Laplacian L=dd^* +d^*d which lives on the same Hilbert space than L'. Both formulas hold for an arbitrary finite abstract simplicial complex G. Writing V_x(y)= g(x,y) for the Newtonian potential of the connection Laplacian, we prove sum_y V_x(y) = K(x), so that by the new Gauss-Bonnet formula, the Euler characteristic of G agrees with the total potential theoretic energy sum_x,y g(x,y)=X(G) of G. The curvature K now relates to the probability measure p minimizing the internal energy U(p)=sum_x,y g(x,y) p(x) p(y) of the complex. Since both the internal energy (here linked to topology) and Shannon entropy are natural and unique in classes of functionals, we then look at critical points p the Helmholtz free energy F(p)=(1-T) U(p)-T S(p) which combines the energy functional U and the entropy functional S(p)=-sum_x p(x) log(p(x)). As the temperature T changes, we observe bifurcation phenomena. Already for G=K_3 both a saddle node bifurcation and a pitchfork bifurcation occurs. The saddle node bifurcation leads to a catastrophe: the function T -> F(p(T),T) is discontinuous if p(T) is a free energy minimizer.

Connected Dominating Sets in Graphs With Stability Number Three
In the special case of graphs G of independence number a(G)=3 without induced chordless cycles C7 it is shown that exists connected dominating set D of vertices with number of vertices n(D)<=4. Using the concept of connected dominating sets, we defined a new invariant h(G) that does not exceed the number of Hadwiger. For the considered graphs it is shown that h(G)>=n(G)/4.

On the normalized Laplacian spectra of some subdivision joins of two graphs
For two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, we denote the subdivision-vertex join and subdivision-edge join of $G_1$ and $G_2$ by $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$, respectively. This paper determines the normalized Laplacian spectra of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ in terms of these of $G_1$ and $G_2$ whenever $G_1$ and $G_2$ are regular. As applications, we construct some non-regular normalized Laplacian cospectral graphs. Besides we also compute the number of spanning trees and the degree-Kirchhoff index of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ for regular graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$.
Cyclohedron and Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes
We show that the cyclohedron (Bott-Taubes polytope) $W_n$ arises as the dual of a Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytope $KR(ρ)$, where $ρ$ is a quasi-metric (asymmetric distance function) satisfying strict triangle inequality. From a broader perspective, this phenomenon illustrates the relationship between a nestohedron $Δ_{\mathcal{\widehat{F}}}$ (associated to a building set $\mathcal{\widehat{F}}$) and its non-simple deformation $Δ_{\mathcal{F}}$, where $\mathcal{F}$ is an `irredundant' or `tight basis' of $\mathcal{\widehat{F}}$. Among the consequences are a new proof of a recent result of Gordon and Petrov (arXiv:1608.06848 [math.CO]) about $f$-vectors of generic Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes and an extension of a theorem of Gelfand, Graev, and Postnikov, about triangulations of the type A, positive root polytopes.

Automated positive part extraction for lattice path generating functions in the octant
Published • View Publication • BIB
The question of classifying the nature of the generating functions of restricted lattice walks has enjoyed much attention in past years. We prove that a certain class of octant walks have a D-finite generating function using the theory of multivariate formal Laurent series.

A note on Hindman-type theorems for uncountable cardinals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recent results of Hindman, Leader and Strauss and of Fernández-Bretón and Rinot showed that natural versions of Hindman's Theorem fail {\em for all} uncontable cardinals. On the other hand, Komjáth proved a result in the positive direction, showing that {\em there are} arbitrarily large abelian groups satisfying {\em some} Hindman-type property. In this note we show how a family of natural Hindman-type theorems for uncountable cardinals can be obtained by adapting some recent results of the author from their original countable setting. We also show how lower bounds for {\em some} of the variants considered can be obtained.
Towards an orbifold generalization of Zvonkine's $r$-ELSV formula
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 372 (2019), no. 6, 4447-4469 • View Publication • BIB
We perform a key step towards the proof of Zvonkine's conjectural $r$-ELSV formula that relates Hurwitz numbers with completed $(r+1)$-cycles to the geometry of the moduli spaces of the $r$-spin structures on curves: we prove the quasi-polynomiality property prescribed by Zvonkine's conjecture. Moreover, we propose an orbifold generalization of Zvonkine's conjecture and prove the quasi-polynomiality property in this case as well. In addition to that, we study the $(0,1)$- and $(0,2)$-functions in this generalized case and we show that these unstable cases are correctly reproduced by the spectral curve initial data.

On the conversion of multivalued to Boolean dynamics
Published • View Publication • BIB
Results and tools on discrete interaction networks are often concerned with Boolean variables, whereas considering more than two levels is sometimes useful. Multivalued networks can be converted to partial Boolean maps, in a way that preserves the asynchronous dynamics. We investigate the problem of extending these maps to non-admissible states, i.e. states that do not have a multivalued counterpart. We observe that attractors are preserved if a stepwise version of the original function is considered for conversion. Different extensions of the Boolean conversion affect the structure of the interaction graphs in different ways. A particular technique for extending the partial Boolean conversion is identified, that ensures that feedback cycles are preserved. This property, combined with the conservation of the asymptotic behaviour, can prove useful for the application of results and analyses defined in the Boolean setting to multivalued networks, and vice versa. As a first application, by considering the conversion of a known example for the discrete multivalued case, we create a Boolean map showing that the existence of a cyclic attractor and the absence of fixed points are compatible with the absence of local negative cycles. We then state a multivalued version of a result connecting mirror states and local feedback cycles.

Geometries arising from trilinear forms on low-dimensional vector spaces
Published in Adv. Geom. 19:2 (2019), 269-290 • View Publication • BIB
Let ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$ be the $k$-Grassmannian of a vector space $V$ with $\dim V=n$. Given a hyperplane $H$ of ${\mathcal G}_k(V)$, we define in [I. Cardinali, L. Giuzzi, A. Pasini, A geometric approach to alternating $k$-linear forms, J. Algebraic Combin. doi:10.1007/s10801-016-0730-6] a point-line subgeometry of ${\mathrm{PG}}(V)$ called the {\it geometry of poles of $H$}. In the present paper, exploiting the classification of alternating trilinear forms in low dimension, we characterize the possible geometries of poles arising for $k=3$ and $n\leq 7$ and propose some new constructions. We also extend a result of [J.Draisma, R. Shaw, Singular lines of trilinear forms, Linear Algebra Appl. doi:10.1016/j.laa.2010.03.040] regarding the existence of line spreads of ${\mathrm{PG}}(5,{\mathbb K})$ arising from hyperplanes of ${\mathcal G}_3(V).$
Point-hyperplane frameworks, slider joints, and rigidity preserving transformations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A one-to-one correspondence between the infinitesimal motions of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and those in $\mathbb{S}^d$ is a classical observation by Pogorelov, and further connections among different rigidity models in various different spaces have been extensively studied. In this paper, we shall extend this line of research to include the infinitesimal rigidity of frameworks consisting of points and hyperplanes. This enables us to understand correspondences between point-hyperplane rigidity, classical bar-joint rigidity, and scene analysis. Among other results, we derive a combinatorial characterization of graphs that can be realized as infinitesimally rigid frameworks in the plane with a given set of points collinear. This extends a result by Jackson and Jordán, which deals with the case when three points are collinear.

On the dimension of downsets of integer partitions and compositions
We characterize the downsets of integer partitions (ordered by containment of Ferrers diagrams) and compositions (ordered by the generalized subword order) which have finite dimension in the sense of Dushnik and Miller. In the case of partitions, while the set of all partitions has infinite dimension, we show that every proper downset of partitions has finite dimension. For compositions we identify four minimal downsets of infinite dimension and establish that every downset which does not contain one of these four has finite dimension.
Difference sets disjoint from a subgroup
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study finite groups $G$ having a subgroup $H$ and $D \subset G \setminus H$ such that the multiset $\{ xy^{-1}:x,y \in D\}$ has every non-identity element occur the same number of times (such a $D$ is called a {\it difference set}). We show that $H$ has to be normal, that $|G|=|H|^2$, and that $|D \cap Hg|=|H|/2$ for all $g \notin H$. We show that $H$ is contained in every normal subgroup of prime index, and other properties. We give a $2$-parameter family of examples of such groups. We show that such groups have Schur rings with four principal sets.
Minimal forcing sets for 1D origami
This paper addresses the problem of finding minimum forcing sets in origami. The origami material folds flat along straight lines called creases that can be labeled as mountains or valleys. A forcing set is a subset of creases that force all the other creases to fold according to their labels. The result is a flat folding of the origami material. In this paper we develop a linear time algorithm that finds minimum forcing sets in one dimensional origami.

Cayley graphs on groups with commutator subgroup of order 2p are hamiltonian
We show that if G is a finite group whose commutator subgroup [G,G] has order 2p, where p is an odd prime, then every connected Cayley graph on G has a hamiltonian cycle.
Schur positivity and log-concavity related to longest increasing subsequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chen proposed a conjecture on the log-concavity of the generating function for the symmetric group with respect to the length of longest increasing subsequences of permutations. Motivated by Chen's log-concavity conjecture, Bóna, Lackner and Sagan further studied similar problems by restricting the whole symmetric group to certain of its subsets. They obtained the log-concavity of the corresponding generating functions for these subsets by using the hook-length formula. In this paper, we generalize and prove their results by establishing the Schur positivity of certain symmetric functions. This also enables us to propose a new approach to Chen's original conjecture.

Discrete Invariants of Generically Inconsistent Systems of Laurent Polynomials
Let $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ be finite sets in $ \mathbb{Z}^n $ and let $ Y \subset (\mathbb{C}^*)^n $ be an algebraic variety defined by a system of equations \[ f_1 = \ldots = f_k = 0, \] where $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are Laurent polynomials with supports in $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$. Assuming that $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are sufficiently generic, the Newton polyhedron theory computes discrete invariants of $ Y $ in terms of the Newton polyhedra of $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $. It may appear that the generic system with fixed supports $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ is inconsistent. In this paper, we compute discrete invariants of algebraic varieties defined by system of equations which are generic in the set of consistent system with support in $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$ by reducing the question to the Newton polyhedra theory. Unlike the classical situation, not only the Newton polyhedra of $f_1,\dots,f_k$, but also the supports $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$ themselves appear in the answers.

Specht modules for quiver Hecke algebras of type $C$
Published in Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 55 (2019), no. 3, 565-626 • View Publication • BIB
We construct and investigate Specht modules $\mathcal{S}^λ$ for cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras in type $C^{(1)}_\ell$ and $C_\infty$, which are labelled by multipartitions $λ$. It is shown that in type $C_\infty$, the Specht module $\mathcal{S}^λ$ has a homogeneous basis indexed by standard tableaux of shape $λ$, which yields a graded character formula and good properties with the exact functors $E_i^Λ$ and $F_i^Λ$. For type $C^{(1)}_\ell$, we propose a conjecture.

Almost Buchsbaumness of some rings arising from complexes with isolated singularities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes with isolated singularities modulo two generic linear forms. Miller, Novik, and Swartz proved that if a complex has homologically isolated singularities, then its Stanley-Reisner ring modulo one generic linear form is Buchsbaum. Here we examine the case of non-homologically isolated singularities, providing many examples in which the Stanley-Reisner ring modulo two generic linear forms is a quasi-Buchsbaum but not Buchsbaum ring.
