A Creative Review on Integer Additive Set-Valued Graphs
Published in International Journal of Scientific and Engineering Research (IJSER), Vol.6, Issue.3, 2015, pp. 372-378 • Search Publication
For a non-empty ground set $X$, finite or infinite, the {\em set-valuation} or {\em set-labeling} of a given graph $G$ is an injective function $f:V(G) \to \mathcal{P}(X)$, where $\mathcal{P}(X)$ is the power set of the set $X$. A set-indexer of a graph $G$ is an injective set-valued function $f:V(G) \to \mathcal{P}(X)$ such that the function $f^{\ast}:E(G)\to \mathcal{P}(X)-\{\emptyset\}$ defined by $f^{\ast}(uv) = f(u){\ast} f(v)$ for every $uv{\in} E(G)$ is also injective, where $\ast$ is a binary operation on sets. An integer additive set-indexer is defined as an injective function $f:V(G)\to \mathcal{P}({\mathbb{N}_0})$ such that the induced function $f^+:E(G) \to \mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ defined by $f^+ (uv) = f(u)+ f(v)$ is also injective, where $\mathbb{N}_0$ is the set of all non-negative integers. In this paper, we critically and creatively review the concepts and properties of integer additive set-valued graphs.

Topology of plane arrangements and their complements
This is a glossary of notions and methods related with the topological theory of collections of affine planes, including braid groups, configuration spaces, order complexes, stratified Morse theory, simplicial resolutions, complexes of graphs, Orlik--Solomon rings, Salvetti complex, matroids, Spanier--Whitehead duality, twisted homology groups, monodromy theory and multidimensional hypergeometric functions. The emphasis on the most geometrical explanation is done; applications and analogies in the differential topology are outlined.

Spaces of Hermitian operators with simple spectra and their finite-order cohomology
The topology of spaces of Hermitian operators in $C^n$ with non-simple spectra was studied by V.Arnold in a relation with the theory of adiabatic connections and the quantum Hall effect. The natural filtration of these spaces by the sets of operators with fixed numbers of eigenvalues defines the spectral sequence, providing interesting combinatorial and homological information on this stratification. We construct a different spectral sequence, also counting the homology groups of these spaces and based on the universal techniques of {\em topological order complexes} and resolutions of algebraic varieties, generalizing the combinatorial inclusion-exclusion formula and similar to the construction of finite degree knot invariants. This spectral sequence degenerates at the term $E_1$, is (conjecturally) multiplicative, and as $n$ grows then it converges to a stable spectral sequence counting the cohomology of the space of infinite Hermitian operators without multiple eigenvalues, all whose terms $E^{p,q}_r$ are finitely generated. It allows us to define the finite degree cohomology classes of this space, and to apply the well-known facts and methods of the topological theory of flag manifolds to the problems of geometrical combinatorics, especially concerning the continuous partially ordered sets of subspaces and flags.

On $r$-neighborly submanifolds in $R^N$
A submanifold $M \subset R^N$ is $r$-neighborly if for any $r$ points in $M$ there is a hyperplane, supporting $M$ and touching it at exactly these $r$ points. We prove that the minimal dimension $Δ(k,r)$ of the Euclidean space, containing a stably $r$-neighborly submanifold, is asymptotically not smaller than $2kr-k$.

Locating-dominating sets and identifying codes in graphs of girth at least 5
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 22:P2.15, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
Locating-dominating sets and identifying codes are two closely related notions in the area of separating systems. Roughly speaking, they consist in a dominating set of a graph such that every vertex is uniquely identified by its neighbourhood within the dominating set. In this paper, we study the size of a smallest locating-dominating set or identifying code for graphs of girth at least 5 and of given minimum degree. We use the technique of vertex-disjoint paths to provide upper bounds on the minimum size of such sets, and construct graphs who come close to meet these bounds.
On the representability of the bi-uniform matroid
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 27(3) (2013), 1482-1491 • Search Publication
Every bi-uniform matroid is representable over all sufficiently large fields. But it is not known exactly over which finite fields they are representable, and the existence of efficient methods to find a representation for every given bi-uniform matroid has not been proved. The interest of these problems is due to their implications to secret sharing. The existence of efficient methods to find representations for all bi-uniform matroids is proved here for the first time. The previously known efficient constructions apply only to a particular class of bi-uniform matroids, while the known general constructions were not proved to be efficient. In addition, our constructions provide in many cases representations over smaller finite fields.

A disjoint union theorem for trees

We prove an infinitary disjoint union theorem for level products of trees. To implement the proof we develop a Hales-Jewett type result for words indexed by a level product of trees.

Ramsey numbers of paths and graphs of the same order
For graphs $F_n$ and $G_n$ of order $n$, if $R(F_n, G_n)=(χ(G_n)-1)(n-1)+σ(G_n)$, then $F_n$ is said to be $G_n$-good, where $σ(G_n)$ is the minimum size of a color class among all proper vertex-colorings of $G_n$ with $χ(G_n)$ colors. Given $Δ(G_n)\le Δ$, it is shown that $P_n$ is asymptotically $G_n$-good if $α(G_n)\le\frac{n}{4}$.

On stacked triangulated manifolds
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove two results on stacked triangulated manifolds in this paper: (a) every stacked triangulation of a connected manifold with or without boundary is obtained from a simplex or the boundary of a simplex by certain combinatorial operations; (b) in dimension $d \geq 4$, if $Δ$ is a tight connected closed homology $d$-manifold whose $i$th homology vanishes for $1 < i < d-1$, then $Δ$ is a stacked triangulation of a manifold. These results give affirmative answers to questions posed by Novik and Swartz and by Effenberger.

Affine hom-complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
For two general polytopal complexes the set of face-wise affine maps between them is shown to be a polytopal complex in an algorithmic way. The resulting algorithm for the affine hom-complex is analyzed in detail. There is also a natural tensor product of polytopal complexes, which is the left adjoint functor for Hom. This extends the corresponding facts from single polytopes, systematic study of which was initiated in [6,12]. Explicit examples of computations of the resulting structures are included. In the special case of simplicial complexes, the affine hom-complex is a functorial subcomplex of Kozlov's combinatorial hom-complex [14], which generalizes Lovasz' well-known construction [15] for graphs.

A note on multipivot Quicksort
Published in J. Inform. Optim. Sci. 39 (5): 1139-1147, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We analyse a generalisation of the Quicksort algorithm, where k uniformly at random chosen pivots are used for partitioning an array of n distinct keys. Specifically, the expected cost of this scheme is obtained, under the assumption of linearity of the cost needed for the partition process. The integration constants of the expected cost are computed using Vandermonde matrices.

Chip-firing games on Eulerian digraphs and NP-hardness of computing the rank of a divisor on a graph
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 193 (2015) 48-56 • View Publication • BIB
Baker and Norine introduced a graph-theoretic analogue of the Riemann-Roch theory. A central notion in this theory is the rank of a divisor. In this paper we prove that computing the rank of a divisor on a graph is NP-hard. The determination of the rank of a divisor can be translated to a question about a chip-firing game on the same underlying graph. We prove the NP-hardness of this question by relating chip-firing on directed and undirected graphs.

On the Complexity of the Positive Semidefinite Zero Forcing Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The positive zero forcing number of a graph is a graph parameter that arises from a non-traditional type of graph colouring, and is related to a more conventional version of zero forcing. We establish a relation between the zero forcing and the fast-mixed searching, which implies some NP-completeness results for the zero forcing problem. For chordal graphs much is understood regarding the relationships between positive zero forcing and clique coverings. Building upon constructions associated with optimal tree covers and forest covers, we present a linear time algorithm for computing the positive zero forcing number of chordal graphs. We also prove that it is NP-complete to determine if a graph has a positive zero forcing set with an additional property.

Treewidth is a lower bound on graph gonality
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 4, pp. 941-953 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the (divisorial) gonality of a finite connected graph is lower bounded by its treewidth. We show that equality holds for grid graphs and complete multipartite graphs. We prove that the treewidth lower bound also holds for \emph{metric graphs} by constructing for any positive rank divisor on a metric graph $Γ$ a positive rank divisor of the same degree on a subdivision of the underlying graph. Finally, we show that the treewidth lower bound also holds for a related notion of gonality defined by Caporaso and for stable gonality as introduced by Cornelissen et al.

On the distance preserving trees in graphs
For a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$, a spanning tree $T$ of $G$ is distance-preserving from $v$ if, for any vertex $w$, the distance from $v$ to $w$ on $T$ is the same as the distance from $v$ to $w$ on $G$. If two vertices $u$ and $v$ are distinct, then two distance-preserving spanning trees $T_{u}$ from $u$ and $T_{v}$ from $v$ are distinct in general. A purpose of this paper is to give a characterization for a given weighted graph $G$ to have a spanning tree $T$ such that $T$ is a distance-preserving spanning tree from distinct two vertices.

Asymptotic Behavior of the Expectation Value of Permanent Products
We would desire to have done the calculations of this paper in the measure on nxn matrices that weights uniformly all 0-1 matrices with row and column sum equal to r, other matrices given weight zero. Instead we work with all matrices that are the sum of r independent uniformly weighted permutation matrices, with the hope that the computations we perform give the same result in this measure. We derive the result for limiting expectations lim (1/n)ln(E(perm_m(A) perm_m'(A))) =lim (1/n)ln(E(perm_m(A)))+ +lim (1/n)ln(E(perm_m'(A))) Here the limit is n to infinity, r is fixed, and m and m' are taken as each proportional to n.

Non-Existence of Some Nearly Perfect Sequences, Near Butson-Hadamard Matrices, and Near Conference Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the non-existence problem of (nearly) perfect (almost) $m$-ary sequences via their connection to (near) Butson-Hadamard (BH) matrices and (near) conference matrices. Firstly, we apply a result on vanishing sums of roots of unity and a result of Brock on the unsolvability of certain equations over a cyclotomic number field to derive non-existence results for near BH matrices and near conference matrices. Secondly, we refine the idea of Brock in the case of cyclotomic number fields whose ring of integers is not a principal ideal domains and get many new non-existence results.

On number of nonzero cells in some two-dimensional reversible second-order cellular automata
Recursive equations for the number of cells with nonzero values at $n$-th step for some two-dimensional reversible second-order cellular automata are proved in this work. Initial configuration is a single cell with the value one and all others zero.
