Combinatorics of k-Interval Cospeciation for Cophylogeny
We show that the cophylogenetic distance, k-interval cospeciation, is distinct from other metrics and accounts for global congruence between locally incongruent trees. The growth of the neighborhood of trees which satisfy the largest possible k-interval cospeciation with a given tree indicates that k-interval cospeciation is useful for analyzing simulated data.

On triple intersections of three families of unit circles
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., 54 (2015): 930--953 • View Publication • BIB
Let $p_1,p_2,p_3$ be three distinct points in the plane, and, for $i=1,2,3$, let $\mathcal C_i$ be a family of $n$ unit circles that pass through $p_i$. We address a conjecture made by Székely, and show that the number of points incident to a circle of each family is $O(n^{11/6})$, improving an earlier bound for this problem due to Elekes, Simonovits, and Szabó [Combin. Probab. Comput., 2009]. The problem is a special instance of a more general problem studied by Elekes and Szabó [Combinatorica, 2012] (and by Elekes and Rónyai [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2000]).

Saturated Graphs of Prescribed Minimum Degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if it contains no copy of $H$ as a subgraph but the addition of any new edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. In this paper we are interested in the function sat$_{t}(n,p)$, defined to be the minimum number of edges that a $K_{p}$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices can have if it has minimum degree at least $t$. We prove that sat$_{t}(n,p) = tn - O(1)$, where the limit is taken as $n$ tends to infinity. This confirms a conjecture of Bollobás when $p = 3$. We also present constructions for graphs that give new upper bounds for sat$_{t}(n,p)$ and discuss an analogous problem for saturated hypergraphs.

Computing the Tutte Polynomial of a Matroid from its Lattice of Cyclic Flats
Published in Electronic Journal Of Combinatorics Volume 21, Issue 3 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
We show how the Tutte polynomial of a matroid $M$ can be computed from its condensed configuration, which is a statistic of its lattice of cyclic flats. The results imply that the Tutte polynomial of $M$ is already determined by the abstract lattice of its cyclic flats together with their cardinalities and ranks. They furthermore generalize a similiar statement for perfect matroid designs due to Mphako and help to understand families of matroids with identical Tutte polynomial as constructed by Ken Shoda.

Noncoherent initial ideals in exterior algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a noncoherent initial ideal of an ideal in the exterior algebra of order 6, answering a question of D. Maclagan (2000). We also give a method for constructing noncoherent initial ideals in exterior algebras using certain noncoherent term orders.

Interlacing networks: birational RSK, the octahedron recurrence, and Schur function identities
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 133, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the problem of giving a bijective proof of the fact that the birational RSK correspondence satisfies the octahedron recurrence, we define interlacing networks, which are certain planar directed networks with a rigid structure of sources and sinks. We describe an involution that swaps paths in these networks and leads to Plücker-like three-term relations among path weights. We show that indeed these relations follow from the Plücker relations in the Grassmannian together with some simple rank properties of the matrices corresponding to our interlacing networks. The space of matrices obeying these rank properties forms the closure of a cell in the matroid stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Not only does the octahedron recurrence for RSK follow immediately from the three-term relations for interlacing networks, but also these relations imply some interesting identities of Schur functions reminiscent of those obtained by Fulmek and Kleber. These Schur function identities lead to some results on Schur positivity for expressions of the form $s_νs_ρ - s_λs_μ$.

Line Polar Grassmann Codes of Orthogonal Type
Published • View Publication • BIB
Polar Grassmann codes of orthogonal type have been introduced in I. Cardinali and L. Giuzzi, \emph{Codes and caps from orthogonal Grassmannians}, {Finite Fields Appl.} {\bf 24} (2013), 148-169. They are subcodes of the Grassmann code arising from the projective system defined by the Plücker embedding of a polar Grassmannian of orthogonal type. In the present paper we fully determine the minimum distance of line polar Grassmann Codes of orthogonal type for $q$ odd.

A natural generalization of Balanced Tableaux
We introduce the notion of "type" of a tableau, that allows us to define new families of tableaux including both balanced and standard Young tableaux. We use these new objects to describe the set of reduced decompositions of any permutation. We then generalize the work of Fomin \emph{et al.} by giving, among other things, a new proof of the fact that balanced and standard tableaux are equinumerous, and by exhibiting many new families of tableaux having similar combinatorial properties to those of balanced tableaux.

On Minimum Order of Odd Regular Graphs Without Perfect Matching
In this article we have derived the minimum order of an odd regular graph such that the graph has no matching. We have observed that how it is different from the case of even regular graphs. We have checked the consistency of the derived result with Petersen's theorem.
Super quasi-symmetric functions via Young diagrams
Published in FPSAC 2014, Chicago (USA), DMTCS proc. AT, 2014, 169-180 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the multivariate generating series $F_P$ of $P$-partitions in infinitely many variables $x_1, x_2 , \dots$. For some family of ranked posets $P$, it is natural to consider an analog $N_P$ with two infinite alphabets. When we collapse these two alphabets, we trivially recover $F_P$. Our main result is the converse, that is, the explicit construction of a map sending back $F_P$ onto $N_P$. We also give a noncommutative analog of the latter. An application is the construction of a basis of WQSym with a non-negative multiplication table, which lifts a basis of QSym introduced by K. Luoto.

Expansion of Building-Like Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Following Gromov, the coboundary expansion of building-like complexes is studied. In particular, it is shown that for any $n \geq 1$, there exists a constant $ε(n)>0$ such that for any $0 \leq k <n$ the $k$-th coboundary expansion constant of any $n$-dimensional spherical building is at least $ε(n)$.

Nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, Demazure modules and PBW filtration

The Cherednik-Orr conjecture expresses the $t\to\infty$ limit of the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of the PBW twisted characters of the affine level one Demazure modules. We prove this conjecture in several special cases.
Log-Concavity of Combinations of Sequences and Applications to Genus Distributions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We formulate conditions on a set of log-concave sequences, under which any linear combination of those sequences is log-concave, and further, of conditions under which linear combinations of log-concave sequences that have been transformed by convolution are log-concave. These conditions involve relations on sequences called \textit{synchronicity} and \textit{ratio-dominance}, and a characterization of some bivariate sequences as \textit{lexicographic}. We are motivated by the 25-year old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. Although calculating genus distributions is NP-hard, they have been calculated explicitly for many graphs of tractable size, and the three conditions have been observed to occur in the \textit{partitioned genus distributions} of all such graphs. They are used here to prove the log-concavity of the genus distributions of graphs constructed by iterative amalgamation of double-rooted graph fragments whose genus distributions adhere to these conditions, even though it is known that the genus polynomials of some such graphs have imaginary roots. A blend of topological and combinatorial arguments demonstrates that log-concavity is preserved through the iterations.

Perfect codes in Doob graphs
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 80(1) 2016, 91-102 • View Publication • BIB
We study $1$-perfect codes in Doob graphs $D(m,n)$. We show that such codes that are linear over $GR(4^2)$ exist if and only if $n=(4^{g+d}-1)/3$ and $m=(4^{g+2d}-4^{g+d})/6$ for some integers $g \ge 0$ and $d>0$. We also prove necessary conditions on $(m,n)$ for $1$-perfect codes that are linear over $Z_4$ (we call such codes additive) to exist in $D(m,n)$ graphs; for some of these parameters, we show the existence of codes. For every $m$ and $n$ satisfying $2m+n=(4^t-1)/3$ and $m \le (4^t-5\cdot 2^{t-1}+1)/9$, we prove the existence of $1$-perfect codes in $D(m,n)$, without the restriction to admit some group structure. Keywords: perfect codes, Doob graphs, distance regular graphs.

A product for permutation groups and topological groups
Published in Duke Math. J. 166, no. 15 (2017), 2965-2999 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new product for permutation groups. It takes as input two permutation groups, M and N, and produces an infinite group M [X] N which carries many of the permutational properties of M. Under mild conditions on M and N the group M [X] N is simple. As a permutational product, its most significant property is the following: M [X] N is primitive if and only if M is primitive but not regular, and N is transitive. Despite this remarkable similarity with the wreath product in product action, M [X] N and M Wr N are thoroughly dissimilar. The product provides a general way to build exotic examples of non-discrete, simple, totally disconnected, locally compact, compactly generated topological groups from discrete groups. We use this to solve a well-known open problem from topological group theory, by obtaining the first construction of uncountably many pairwise non-isomorphic simple topological groups that are totally disconnected, locally compact, compactly generated and non-discrete. The groups we construct all contain the same compact open subgroup. To build the product, we describe a group U(M,N) that acts on an edge-transitive biregular tree T. This group has a natural universal property and is analogous to the iconic universal group construction of M. Burger and S. Mozes for locally finite regular trees.

The Betti poset in monomial resolutions
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set with unique minimal element $\hat{0}$. We study the Betti poset of $P$, created by deleting elements $q\in P$ for which the open interval $(\hat{0}, q)$ is acyclic. Using basic simplicial topology, we demonstrate an isomorphism in homology between open intervals of the form $(\hat{0},p)\subset P$ and corresponding open intervals in the Betti poset. Our motivating application is that the Betti poset of a monomial ideal's lcm-lattice encodes both its $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-graded Betti numbers and the structure of its minimal free resolution. In the case of rigid monomial ideals, we use the data of the Betti poset to explicitly construct the minimal free resolution. Subsequently, we introduce the notion of rigid deformation, a generalization of Bayer, Peeva, and Sturmfels' generic deformation.
A semi-algebraic version of Zarankiewicz's problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A bipartite graph $G$ is semi-algebraic in $\mathbb{R}^d$ if its vertices are represented by point sets $P,Q \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and its edges are defined as pairs of points $(p,q) \in P\times Q$ that satisfy a Boolean combination of a fixed number of polynomial equations and inequalities in $2d$ coordinates. We show that for fixed $k$, the maximum number of edges in a $K_{k,k}$-free semi-algebraic bipartite graph $G = (P,Q,E)$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with $|P| = m$ and $|Q| = n$ is at most $O((mn)^{2/3} + m + n)$, and this bound is tight. In dimensions $d \geq 3$, we show that all such semi-algebraic graphs have at most $C\left((mn)^{ \frac{d}{d+1} + \varepsilon} + m + n\right)$ edges, where here $\varepsilon$ is an arbitrarily small constant and $C = C(d,k,t,\varepsilon)$. This result is a far-reaching generalization of the classical Szemerédi-Trotter incidence theorem. The proof combines tools from several fields: VC-dimension and shatter functions, polynomial partitioning, and Hilbert polynomials. We also present various applications of our theorem. For example, a general point-variety incidence bound in $\mathbb{R}^d$, an improved bound for a $d$-dimensional variant of the Erdős unit distances problem, and more.

2-semiarcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, $q\leq 13$
A $2$-semiarc is a pointset ${\mathcal S}_k$ with the property that the number of tangent lines to ${\mathcal S}_k$ at each of its points is two. Using some theoretical results and computer aided search, the complete classification of $2$-semiarcs in PG$(2,q)$ is given for $q\leq 7,$ the spectrum of their sizes is determined for $q\leq 9$, and some results about the existence are proven for $q=11$ and $q=13.$ For several sizes of $2$-semiarcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, $q\leq 7$, classification results have been obtained by theoretical proofs.

The Laplacian Eigenvalues and Invariants of Graphs

In addition, we present a sufficient condition for the existence of Hamiltonicity in a graph involving its Laplacian eigenvalues.
