Maxima of the $Q$-index for outer-planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $Q$-$index$ of graph $G$ is the largest eigenvalue $q(G)$ of its signless Laplacian $Q(G)$. In this paper, we prove that the graph $K_{1}\nabla P_{n-1}$ has the maximal $Q$-index among all outer-planar graphs of order $n$.

Distinguishing subgroups of the rationals by their Ramsey properties
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 129 (2015), 93-104 • View Publication • BIB
A system of linear equations with integer coefficients is partition regular over a subset S of the reals if, whenever S\{0} is finitely coloured, there is a solution to the system contained in one colour class. It has been known for some time that there is an infinite system of linear equations that is partition regular over R but not over Q, and it was recently shown (answering a long-standing open question) that one can also distinguish Q from Z in this way. Our aim is to show that the transition from Z to Q is not sharp: there is an infinite chain of subgroups of Q, each of which has a system that is partition regular over it but not over its predecessors. We actually prove something stronger: our main result is that if R and S are subrings of Q with R not contained in S, then there is a system that is partition regular over R but not over S. This implies, for example, that the chain above may be taken to be uncountable.

Perfect Packings in Quasirandom Hypergraphs II
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 595-611 • View Publication • BIB
For each of the notions of hypergraph quasirandomness that have been studied, we identify a large class of hypergraphs F so that every quasirandom hypergraph H admits a perfect F-packing. An informal statement of a special case of our general result for 3-uniform hypergraphs is as follows. Fix an integer r >= 4 and 0<p<1. Suppose that H is an n-vertex triple system with r|n and the following two properties: * for every graph G with V(G)=V(H), at least p proportion of the triangles in G are also edges of H, * for every vertex x of H, the link graph of x is a quasirandom graph with density at least p. Then H has a perfect $K_r^{(3)}$-packing. Moreover, we show that neither hypotheses above can be weakened, so in this sense our result is tight. A similar conclusion for this special case can be proved by Keevash's hypergraph blowup lemma, with a slightly stronger hypothesis on H.
Partition Statistics Equidistributed with the Number of Hook Difference One Cells
Let $λ$ be a partition, viewed as a Young diagram. We define the hook difference of a cell of $λ$ to be the difference of its leg and arm lengths. Define $h_{1,1}(λ)$ to be the number of cells of $λ$ with hook difference one. In the paper of Buryak and Feigin (arXiv:1206.5640), algebraic geometry is used to prove a generating function identity which implies that $h_{1,1}$ is equidistributed with $a_2$, the largest part of a partition that appears at least twice, over the partitions of a given size. In this paper, we propose a refinement of the theorem of Buryak and Feigin and prove some partial results using combinatorial methods. We also obtain a new formula for the q-Catalan numbers which naturally leads us to define a new q,t-Catalan number with a simple combinatorial interpretation.

Combinatorics of The Interrupted Period
This article is about discrete periodicities and their combinatorial structure. It describes the unique structure caused by the alteration of a pattern in a repetition. That alteration of a pattern could be "heard" as the disturbance that one can hear when a record is scratched and jumps.

Domination games played on line graphs of complete multipartite graphs
The domination game on a graph $G$ (introduced by B. Brešar, S. Klavžar, D.F. Rall \cite{BKR2010}) consists of two players, Dominator and Staller, who take turns choosing a vertex from $G$ such that whenever a vertex is chosen by either player, at least one additional vertex is dominated. Dominator wishes to dominate the graph in as few steps as possible, and Staller wishes to delay this process as much as possible. The game domination number $γ_{\small g}(G)$ is the number of vertices chosen when Dominator starts the game; when Staller starts, it is denoted by $γ_{\small g}^{\prime }(G).$ In this paper, the domination game on line graph $L\left( K_{\overline{m}}\right) $ of complete multipartite graph $K_{\overline{m}}$ $(\overline{m}\equiv (m_{1},...,m_{n})\in \mathbb{N} ^{n})$ is considered, the exact values for game domination numbers are obtained and optimal strategy for both players is described. Particularly, it is proved that for $m_{1}\leq m_{2}\leq ...\leq m_{n}$ both $γ_{\small g}\left( L\left( K_{\overline{m}}\right) \right) =\min \left\{ \left\lceil \frac{2}{3}\left\vert V\left( K_{\overline{m}}\right) \right\vert \right\rceil ,\right.$ $\left. 2\max \left\{ \left\lceil \frac{1}{2}\left( m_{1}+...+m_{n-1}\right) \right\rceil ,\text{ }m_{n-1}\right\} \right\} -1$ when $n\geq 2$ and $γ_{g}^{\prime }(L\left( K_{\overline{m}}\right) )=\min \left\{ \left\lceil \frac{2}{3}\left( \left\vert V(K_{_{\overline{m}}})\right\vert -2\right) \right\rceil ,\right.$ $\left. 2\max \left\{ \left\lceil \frac{1}{2}\left( m_{1}+...+m_{n-1}-1\right) \right\rceil ,\text{ }m_{n-1}\right\} \right\} $ when $n\geq 4$.

The spectra and the signless Laplacian spectra of graphs with pockets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G[F,V_k,H_v]$ be the graph with $k$ pockets, where $F$ is a simple graph of order $n\geq1$, $V_k=\{v_1,\ldots,v_k\}$ is a subset of the vertex set of $F$ and $H_v$ is a simple graph of order $m\geq2$, $v$ is a specified vertex of $H_v$. Also let $G[F,E_k,H_{uv}]$ be the graph with $k$ edge-pockets, where $F$ is a simple graph of order $n\geq2$, $E_k=\{e_1,\ldots,e_k\}$ is a subset of the edge set of $F$ and $H_{uv}$ is a simple graph of order $m\geq3$, $uv$ is a specified edge of $H_{uv}$ such that $H_{uv}-u$ is isomorphic to $H_{uv}-v$. In this paper, we obtain some results describing the signless Laplacian spectra of $G[F,V_k,H_v]$ and $G[F,E_k,H_{uv}]$ in terms of the signless Laplacian spectra of $F,H_v$ and $F,H_{uv}$, respectively. In addition, we also give some results describing the adjacency spectrum of $G[F,V_k,H_v]$ in terms of the adjacency spectra of $F,H_v$. Finally, as an application of these results, we construct infinitely many pairs of signless Laplacian (resp. adjacency) cospectral graphs.

Independence and Matchings in $σ$-hypergraphs
Let $σ$ be a partition of the positive integer $r$. A $σ$-hypergraph $H=H(n,r,q|σ)$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $nq$ vertices which are partitioned into $n$ classes $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_n$ each containing $q$ vertices. An $r$-subset $K$ of vertices is an edge of the hypergraph if the partition of $r$ formed by the non-zero cardinalities $|K\cap V_i|, 1\leq i \leq n,$ is $σ$. In earlier works we have considered colourings of the vertices of $H$ which are constrained such that any edge has at least $α$ and at most $β$ vertices of the same colour, and we have shown that interesting results can be obtained by varying $α, β$ and the parameters of $H$ appropriately. In this paper we continue to investigate the versatility of $σ$-hypergraphs by considering two classical problems: independence and matchings. We first demonstrate an interesting link between the constrained colourings described above and the $k$-independence number of a hypergraph, that is, the largest cardinality of a subset of vertices of a hypergraph not containing $k+1$ vertices in the same edge. We also give an exact computation of the $k$-independence number of the $σ$-hypergraph $H$. We then present results on maximum, and sometimes perfect, matchings in $H$. These results often depend on divisibility relations between the parameters of $H$ and on the highest common factor of the parts of $σ$.
Sandpile groups of generalized de Bruijn and Kautz graphs and circulant matrices over finite fields
Published in Journal of Algebra (2015), pp. 268-295 • View Publication • BIB
A maximal minor $M$ of the Laplacian of an $n$-vertex Eulerian digraph $Γ$ gives rise to a finite group $\mathbb{Z}^{n-1}/\mathbb{Z}^{n-1}M$ known as the sandpile (or critical) group $S(Γ)$ of $Γ$. We determine $S(Γ)$ of the generalized de Bruijn graphs $Γ=\mathrm{DB}(n,d)$ with vertices $0,\dots,n-1$ and arcs $(i,di+k)$ for $0\leq i\leq n-1$ and $0\leq k\leq d-1$, and closely related generalized Kautz graphs, extending and completing earlier results for the classical de Bruijn and Kautz graphs. Moreover, for a prime $p$ and an $n$-cycle permutation matrix $X\in\mathrm{GL}_n(p)$ we show that $S(\mathrm{DB}(n,p))$ is isomorphic to the quotient by $\langle X\rangle$ of the centralizer of $X$ in $\mathrm{PGL}_n(p)$. This offers an explanation for the coincidence of numerical data in sequences A027362 and A003473 of the OEIS, and allows one to speculate upon a possibility to construct normal bases in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ from spanning trees in $\mathrm{DB}(n,p)$.

We show a construction of a quantum ramp secret sharing scheme from a nested pair of linear codes. Necessary and sufficient conditions for qualified sets and forbidden sets are given in terms of combinatorial properties of nested linear codes. An algebraic geometric construction for quantum secret sharing is also given.

The Laplacian spectral excess theorem for distance-regular graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 458 (2014), 245-250 • View Publication • BIB
The spectral excess theorem states that, in a regular graph G, the average excess, which is the mean of the numbers of vertices at maximum distance from a vertex, is bounded above by the spectral excess (a number that is computed by using the adjacency spectrum of G), and G is distance-regular if and only if equality holds. In this note we prove the corresponding result by using the Laplacian spectrum without requiring regularity of G.

A structure theorem for multiplicative functions over the Gaussian integers and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a structure theorem for multiplicative functions on the Gaussian integers, showing that every bounded multiplicative function on the Gaussian integers can be decomposed into a term which is approximately periodic and another which has a small U^{3}-Gowers uniformity norm. We apply this to prove partition regularity results over the Gaussian integers for certain equations involving quadratic forms in three variables. For example, we show that for any finite coloring of the Gaussian integers, there exist distinct nonzero elements x and y of the same color such that x^{2}-y^{2}=n^{2} for some Gaussian integer n. The analog of this statement over Z remains open.

Spanning rigid subgraph packing and sparse subgraph covering
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 32 (2018), 1305-1313 • View Publication • BIB
Rigidity, arising in discrete geometry, is the property of a structure that does not flex. Laman provides a combinatorial characterization of rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane, and thus rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane have applications in graph theory. We discover a sufficient partition condition of packing spanning rigid subgraphs and spanning trees. As a corollary, we show that a simple graph $G$ contains a packing of $k$ spanning rigid subgraphs and $l$ spanning trees if $G$ is $(4k+2l)$-edge-connected, and $G-Z$ is essentially $(6k+2l - 2k|Z|)$-edge-connected for every $Z\subset V(G)$. Thus every $(4k+2l)$-connected and essentially $(6k+2l)$-connected graph $G$ contains a packing of $k$ spanning rigid subgraphs and $l$ spanning trees. Utilizing this, we show that every $6$-connected and essentially $8$-connected graph $G$ contains a spanning tree $T$ such that $G-E(T)$ is $2$-connected. These improve some previous results. Sparse subgraph covering problems are also studied.

Some remarkable new Plethystic Operators in the Theory of Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the 90's a collection of Plethystic operators were introduced in [3], [7] and [8] to solve some Representation Theoretical problems arising from the Theory of Macdonald polynomials. This collection was enriched in the research that led to the results which appeared in [5], [6] and [9]. However since some of the identities resulting from these efforts were eventually not needed, this additional work remained unpublished. As a consequence of very recent publications [4], [11], [19], [20], [21], a truly remarkable expansion of this theory has taken place. However most of this work has appeared in a language that is virtually inaccessible to practitioners of Algebraic Combinatorics. Yet, these developments have led to a variety of new conjectures in [2] in the Combinatorics and Symmetric function Theory of Macdonald Polynomials. The present work results from an effort to obtain in an elementary and accessible manner all the background necessary to construct the symmetric function side of some of these new conjectures. It turns out that the above mentioned unpublished results provide precisely the tools needed to carry out this project to its completion.
Bitangents of tropical plane quartic curves

We study smooth tropical plane quartic curves and show that they satisfy certain properties analogous to (but also different from) smooth plane quartics in algebraic geometry. For example, we show that every such curve admits either infinitely many or exactly 7 bitangent lines. We also prove that a smooth tropical plane quartic curve cannot be hyperelliptic.

The endomorphism of Grassmann graphs

A graph is called a pseudo-core if every endomorphism is either an automorphism or a colouring. In this paper, we show that every Grassmann graph $J_q(n,m)$ is a pseudo-core. Moreover, the Grassmann graph $J_q(n,m)$ is a core whenever $m$ and $n-m+1$ are not relatively prime, and $J_q(2pk-2, pk-1)$ is a core whenever $p,k\geq 2$.

On pre-Hamiltonian Cycles in Hamiltonian Digraphs
Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$. In \cite{[14]} (J. of Graph Theory, Vol.16, No. 5, 51-59, 1992) Y. Manoussakis proved the following theorem: Suppose that $D$ satisfies the following condition for every triple $x,y,z$ of vertices such that $x$ and $y$ are non-adjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. If there is no arc from $z$ to $x$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^-(x)+d^+(z)\geq 3n-2$. Then $D$ is Hamiltonian. In this paper we show that: If $D$ satisfies the condition of Manoussakis' theorem, then $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle (i.e., a cycle of length $n-1$) or $n$ is even and $D$ is isomorphic to the complete bipartite digraph with partite sets of cardinalities $n/2$ and $n/2$.
