Using the subspace theorem to bound unit distances
We prove a special case of Erdős' unit distance problem using a corollary of the subspace theorem bounding the number of solutions of linear equations from a multiplicative group. We restrict our attention to unit distances coming from a multiplicative group of rank $r$ not too large. Specifically, given $\varepsilon>0$ and $n$ points in the plane, we construct the unit distance graph from these points and distances and use the corollary above to bound certain paths of length $k$ in the graph giving at most $n^{1+\varepsilon}$ unit distances from the group above. We require that the rank $r\le c\log n$ for some $c>0$ depending on $\varepsilon$. This extends a result of József Solymosi, Frank de Zeeuw and the author where we only considered unit distances that are roots of unity. Lastly we show that the lower bound configuration for the unit distance problem of Erdős consists of unit distances from a multiplicative subgroup of the form above.
A conjecture on equitable vertex arboricity of graphs

Wu, Zhang and Li [4] conjectured that the set of vertices of any simple graph $G$ can be equitably partitioned into $\lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$ subsets so that each of them induces a forest of $G$. In this note, we prove this conjecture for graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\geq |G|/2$.
Beyond the Vizing's bound for at most seven colors
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $Δ+1$ colors by Vizing's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors.
Vizing's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{Δ+1}|E|$. This is known to be tight for cliques $K_{Δ+1}$ when $Δ$ is even. However, for $Δ=3$ it was improved to $26/31|E|$ by Albertson and Haas [Parsimonious edge colorings, Disc. Math. 148, 1996] and later to $6/7|E|$ by Rizzi [Approximating the maximum 3-edge-colorable subgraph problem, Disc. Math. 309, 2009]. It is tight for $B_3$, the graph isomorphic to a $K_4$ with one edge subdivided.
We improve previously known bounds for $Δ\in{3,...,7}$, under the assumption that for $Δ=3,4,6$ graph $G$ is not isomorphic to $B_3$, $K_5$ and $K_7$, respectively. For $Δ\geq 4$ these are the first results which improve over the Vizing's bound. We also show a new bound for subcubic multigraphs not isomorphic to $K_3$ with one edge doubled.
In the second part, we give approximation algorithms for the Maximum k-Edge-Colorable Subgraph problem, where given a graph G (without any bound on its maximum degree or other restrictions) one has to find a k-edge-colorable subgraph with maximum number of edges. In particular, when G is simple for k=3,4,5,6,7 we obtain approximation ratios of 13/15, 9/11, 19/22, 23/27 and 22/25, respectively. We also present a 7/9-approximation for k=3 when G is a multigraph. The approximation algorithms follow from a new general framework that can be used for any value of k.
The 1-2-3 Conjecture and related problems: a survey
The 1-2-3 Conjecture, posed in 2004 by Karonski, Luczak, and Thomason, is as follows: "If G is a graph with no connected component having exactly 2 vertices, then the edges of G may be assigned weights from the set {1,2,3} so that, for any adjacent vertices u and v, the sum of weights of edges incident to u differs from the sum of weights of edges incident to v." This survey paper presents the current state of research on the 1-2-3 Conjecture and the many variants that have been proposed in its short but active history.
New Directions in Bipartite Field Theories

We perform a detailed investigation of Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs), a general class of 4d N=1 gauge theories which are defined by bipartite graphs. This class of theories is considerably expanded by identifying a new way of assigning gauge symmetries to graphs. A new procedure is introduced in order to determine the toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces of BFTs. For graphs on a disk, we show that the matroid polytope for the corresponding cell in the Grassmannian coincides with the toric diagram of the BFT moduli space. A systematic BFT prescription for determining graph reductions is presented. We illustrate our ideas in infinite classes of BFTs and introduce various operations for generating new theories from existing ones. Particular emphasis is given to theories associated to non-planar graphs.
The crossing number of pancake graph $P_4$ is six
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the least number of pairwise crossings of edges among all the drawings of $G$ in the plane. The pancake graph is an important topology for interconnecting processors in parallel computers. In this paper, we prove the exact value of the crossing number of pancake graph $P_4$ is six.
Combinatorial Semigroup Bialgebras
This paper is devoted to the presentation of combinatorial bialgebras whose coproduct is defined with the help of a commutative semigroup. We consider this setting in order to give a general framework which admits as special cases the shuffle and stuffle algebras. We also consider the problem of constructing pairs of bases in duality and present Schützenberger's factorisations as an application.
Quantum graph walks II: Quantum walks on graph coverings
We give a new determinant expression for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a quantum graph G. Also, we give a decomposition formula for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G. Furthermore, we define an L-function of G, and give a determinant expression of it. As a corollary, we express the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G by means of its L-functions. As an application, we introduce three types of quantum graph walks, and treat their relation.

In this paper, we establish a lemma in algebraic coding theory that frequently appears in the encoding and decoding of, e.g., Reed-Solomon codes, algebraic geometry codes, and affine variety codes. Our lemma corresponds to the non-systematic encoding of affine variety codes, and can be stated by giving a canonical linear map as the composition of an extension through linear feedback shift registers from a Grobner basis and a generalized inverse discrete Fourier transform. We clarify that our lemma yields the error-value estimation in the fast erasure-and-error decoding of a class of dual affine variety codes. Moreover, we show that systematic encoding corresponds to a special case of erasure-only decoding. The lemma enables us to reduce the computational complexity of error-evaluation from O(n^3) using Gaussian elimination to O(qn^2) with some mild conditions on n and q, where n is the code length and q is the finite-field size.

We prove an inverse relation and a family of convolution formulas involving partial Bell polynomials. Known and some presumably new combinatorial identities of convolution type are discussed. Our approach relies on an interesting multinomial formula for the binomial coefficients. The inverse relation is deduced from a parametrization of suitable identities that facilitate dealing with compositions of Bell polynomials.
Cycles and Paths Embedded in Varietal Hypercubes
The varietal hypercube $VQ_n$ is a variant of the hypercube $Q_n$ and has better properties than $Q_n$ with the same number of edges and vertices. This paper shows that every edge of $VQ_n$ is contained in cycles of every length from 4 to $2^n$ except 5, and every pair of vertices with distance $d$ is connected by paths of every length from $d$ to $2^n-1$ except 2 and 4 if $d=1$.

We define a new combinatorial object, which we call a labeled hypergraph, uniquely associated to any square-free monomial ideal. We prove several upper bounds on the regularity of a square-free monomial ideal in terms of simple combinatorial properties of its labeled hypergraph. We also give specific formulas for the regularity of square-free monomial ideals with certain labeled hypergraphs. Furthermore, we prove results in the case of one-dimensional labeled hypergraphs.

From a combinatorial perspective, we establish three inequalities on coefficients of $R$- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for crystallographic Coxeter groups: (1) Nonnegativity of $(q-1)$-coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (2) a new criterion of rational singularities of Bruhat intervals by sum of quadratic coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (3) existence of a certain strict inequality (coefficientwise) of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our main idea is to understand Deodhar's inequality in a connection with a sum of $R$-polynomials and edges of Bruhat graphs.

Let $r \geqslant 0$ and $k \geqslant 1$ be integers. We say that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring if there exists a proper $k$-coloring of $G$ such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most $r$. The least $k$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring is denoted by $χ_{r=} (G)$, and the least $n$ such that a graph $G$ has an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring for all $k \geqslant n$ is denoted by $χ^*_{r=} (G)$. In this paper, we propose a necessary and sufficient condition for a complete multipartite graph $G$ to have an $r$-equitable $k$-coloring, and also give exact values of $χ_{r=} (G)$ and $χ^*_{r=} (G)$.
Spectral characterizations of almost complete graphs
We investigate when a complete graph $K_n$ with some edges deleted is determined by its adjacency spectrum. It is shown to be the case if the deleted edges form a matching, a complete graph $K_m$ provided $m \leq n-2$, or a complete bipartite graph. If the edges of a path are deleted we prove that the graph is determined by its generalized spectrum (that is, the spectrum together with the spectrum of the complement). When at most five edges are deleted from $K_n$, there is just one pair of nonisomorphic cospectral graphs. We construct nonisomorphic cospectral graphs (with cospectral complements) for all $n$ if six or more edges are deleted from $K_n$, provided $n$ is big enough.

We define in this paper several Hopf algebras describing the combinatorics of the so-called multi-scale renormalization in quantum field theory. After a brief recall of the main mathematical features of multi-scale renormalization, we define assigned graphs, that are graphs with appropriate decorations for the multi-scale framework. We then define Hopf algebras on these assigned graphs and on the Gallavotti-Nicolò trees, particular class of trees encoding the supplementary informations of the assigned graphs. Several morphisms between these combinatorial Hopf algebras and the Connes-Kreimer algebra are given. Finally, scale dependent couplings are analyzed via this combinatorial algebraic setting.
An upper bound for the crossing number of bubble-sort graph Bn
The crossing number of a graph G is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of G. Motivated by the recent work [Faria, L., Figueiredo, C.M.H. de, Sykora, O., Vrt'o, I.: An improved upper bound on the crossing number of the hypercube. J. Graph Theory 59, 145-161 (2008)], we give an upper bound of the crossing number of n-dimensional bubble-sort graph Bn.

Random matrix models have been extensively studied in mathematical physics and have proven useful in combinatorics. In this review paper we introduce a generalization of these models to a class of tensor models. As the topology and combinatorics of these tensor models are much more complex than those of matrix models, a first quantum field theoretical (QFT) proposition for simplifying them was recently proposed in R. Gurau (2011). Here, we review a different QFT simplification.
