An increasing tableau is a semistandard tableau with strictly increasing rows and columns. It is well known that the Catalan numbers enumerate both rectangular standard Young tableaux of two rows and also Dyck paths. We generalize this to a bijection between rectangular 2-row increasing tableaux and small Schröder paths. We demonstrate relations between the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux developed by H. Thomas and A. Yong and the combinatorics of tropical frieze patterns. We then use this jeu de taquin to present new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon of V. Reiner, D. Stanton, and D. White, generalizing results of D. White and of J. Stembridge.

The bondage number of a graph is the smallest number of its edges whose removal results in a graph having a larger domination number. We provide constant upper bounds for the bondage number of graphs on topological surfaces, improve upper bounds for the bondage number in terms of the maximum vertex degree and the orientable and non-orientable genera of the graph, and show tight lower bounds for the number of vertices of graphs 2-cell embeddable on topological surfaces of a given genus. Also, we provide stronger upper bounds for graphs with no triangles and graphs with the number of vertices larger than a certain threshold in terms of the graph genera. This settles Teschner's Conjecture in positive for almost all graphs.
On the Hadamard product of Hopf monoids

Combinatorial structures which compose and decompose give rise to Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. The Hadamard product of two Hopf monoids is another Hopf monoid. We prove two main results regarding freeness of Hadamard products. The first one states that if one factor is connected and the other is free as a monoid, their Hadamard product is free (and connected). The second provides an explicit basis for the Hadamard product when both factors are free.
The first main result is obtained by showing the existence of a one-parameter deformation of the comonoid structure and appealing to a rigidity result of Loday and Ronco which applies when the parameter is set to zero. To obtain the second result, we introduce an operation on species which is intertwined by the free monoid functor with the Hadamard product. As an application of the first result, we deduce that the dimension sequence of a connected Hopf monoid satisfies the following condition: except for the first, all coefficients of the reciprocal of its generating function are nonpositive.
Constant term identities and Poincare polynomials

In 1982 Macdonald published his now famous constant term conjectures for classical root systems. This paper begins with the almost trivial observation that Macdonald's constant term identities admit an extra set of free parameters, thereby linking them to Poincare polynomials. We then exploit these extra degrees of freedom in the case of type A to give the first proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture---a symmetric function generalisation of the q-Dyson conjecture or Zeilberger-Bressoud theorem. Key ingredients in our proof of Kadell's orthogonality conjecture are the polynomial lemma of Karasev and Petrov, the scalar product for Demazure characters and (0,1)-matrices.

The notion of r-stackedness for simplicial polytopes was introduced by McMullen and Walkup in 1971 as a generalization of stacked polytopes. In this paper, we define the r-stackedness for triangulated homology manifolds and study their basic properties. In addition, we find a new necessary condition for face vectors of triangulated manifolds when all the vertex links are polytopal.
Tower Tableaux
We introduce a new combinatorial object called tower diagrams and prove fundamental properties of these objects. We also introduce an algorithm that allows us to slide words to tower diagrams. We show that the algorithm is well-defined only for reduced words which makes the algorithm a test for reducibility. Using the algorithm, a bijection between tower diagrams and finite permutations is obtained and it is shown that this bijection specializes to a bijection between certain labellings of a given tower diagram and reduced expressions of the corresponding permutation.

C. Jensen, J. McCammond and J. Meier have used weighted hypertrees to compute the Euler characteristic of a subgroup of the automorphism group of a free product. Weighted hypertrees also appear in the study of the homology of the hypertree poset. We link them to decorated hypertrees after a general study on decorated hypertrees, which we enumerate using box trees.---C.

Let $Ψ$ be the projectivization (i.e., the set of one-dimensional vector subspaces) of a vector space of dimension $\ge 3$ over a field. Let $H$ be a closed (in the pointwise convergence topology) subgroup of the permutation group $\mathfrak{S}_Ψ$ of the set $Ψ$. Suppose that $H$ contains the projective group and an arbitrary self-bijection of $Ψ$ transforming a triple of collinear points to a non-collinear triple. It is well-known from \cite{KantorMcDonough} that if $Ψ$ is finite then $H$ contains the alternating subgroup $\mathfrak{A}_Ψ$ of $\mathfrak{S}_Ψ$.
We show in Theorem \ref{density} below that $H=\mathfrak{S}_Ψ$, if $Ψ$ is infinite.
Ore's Conjecture on color-critical graphs is almost true

A graph $G$ is $k$-critical if it has chromatic number $k$, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$--colorable. Let $f_k(n)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical graph. We give a lower bound, $f_k(n) \geq F(k,n)$, that is sharp for every $n=1 ({\rm mod} k-1)$. It is also sharp for $k=4$ and every $n\geq 6$. The result improves the classical bounds by Gallai and Dirac and subsequent bounds by Krivelevich and Kostochka and Stiebitz. It establishes the asymptotics of $f_k(n)$ for every fixed $k$. It also proves that the conjecture by Ore from 1967 that for every $k\geq 4$ and $n\geq k+2$, $f_k(n+k-1)=f(n)+\frac{k-1}{2}(k - \frac{2}{k-1})$ holds for each $k\geq 4$ for all but at most $k^3/12$ values of $n$. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for $(k-1)$-coloring a graph $G$ that satisfies $|E(G[W])| < F_k(|W|)$ for all $W \subseteq V(G)$, $|W| \geq k$. We also present some applications of the result.
Representations of general linear groups and categorical actions of Kac-Moody algebras
This is an expanded version of the lectures given by the author on the 3rd school "Lie algebras, algebraic groups and invariant theory" in Togliatti, Russia. In these notes we explain the concept of a categorical Kac-Moody action by studying an example of the category of rational representations of a general linear group in positive characteristic. We also deal with some more advanced topics: a categorical action on the polynomial representations and crystals of categorical actions.
Minimizing the number of carries in addition

When numbers are added in base $b$ in the usual way, carries occur. If two random, independent 1-digit numbers are added, then the probability of a carry is $\frac{b-1}{2b}$. Other choices of digits lead to less carries. In particular, if for odd $b$ we use the digits $\{-(b-1)/2, -(b-3)/2,...,...(b-1)/2\}$ then the probability of carry is only $\frac{b^2-1}{4b^2}$. Diaconis, Shao and Soundararajan conjectured that this is the best choice of digits, and proved that this is asymptotically the case when $b=p$ is a large prime. In this note we prove this conjecture for all odd primes $p$.

Two simple polytopes of dimension 3 having the identical bigraded Betti numbers but non-isomorphic Tor-algebras are presented. These polytopes provide two homotopically different moment-angle manifolds having the same bigraded Betti numbers. These two simple polytopes are the first examples of polytopes that are (toric) cohomologically rigid but not combinatorially rigid.
Permutations with given peak set
Let Sym_n denote the symmetric group of all permutations pi = a_1...a_n of {1,...,n}. An index i is a peak of pi if a_{i-1} < a_i > a_{i+1} and we let P(pi) be the set of peaks of pi. Given any set S of positive integers we define P(S;n) to be the set pi in Sym_n with P(pi)=S. Our main result is that for all fixed subsets of positive integers S and all sufficiently large n we have #P(S;n)= p(n) 2^{n-#S-1} for some polynomial p(n) depending on S. We explicitly compute p(n) for various S of probabilistic interest, including certain cases where S depends on n. We also discuss two conjectures, one about positivity of the coefficients of the expansion of p(n) in a binomial coefficient basis, and the other about sets S maximizing #P(S;n) when #S is fixed.

Testing a graph on 2-vertex- and 2-edge-connectivity are two fundamental algorithmic graph problems. For both problems, different linear-time algorithms with simple implementations are known. Here, an even simpler linear-time algorithm is presented that computes a structure from which both the 2-vertex- and 2-edge-connectivity of a graph can be easily "read off". The algorithm computes all bridges and cut vertices of the input graph in the same time.
Schubert calculus of Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups

We observe that the expansion in the basis of Schubert cycles for $H^*(G/B)$ of the class of a Richardson variety stable under a spherical Levi subgroup is described by a theorem of Brion. Using this observation, along with a combinatorial model of the poset of certain symmetric subgroup orbit closures, we give positive combinatorial descriptions of certain Schubert structure constants on the full flag variety in type $A$. Namely, we describe $c_{u,v}^w$ when $u$ and $v$ are inverse to Grassmannian permutations with unique descents at $p$ and $q$, respectively. We offer some conjectures for similar rules in types $B$ and $D$, associated to Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups of $SO(2n+1,\C)$ and $SO(2n,\C)$, respectively.
A sufficient condition for first order non-definability of arrowing problems
We here present a sufficient condition for general arrowing problems to be non definable in first order logic, based in well known tools of finite model theory e.g. Hanf's Theorem and known concepts in finite combinatorics, like senders and determiners.
Proof of a Combinatorial Conjecture Coming from the PAC-Bayesian Machine Learning Theory
We give a proof of a conjecture of A. Lacasse in his doctoral thesis which has applications in machine learning algorithms. The proof relies on some interesting binomial sums identities introduced by Abel (1839), and on their generalization to the multinomial case by Hurwitz (1902).

A cross-bifix-free code is a set of words in which no prefix of any length of any word is the suffix of any word in the set. Cross-bifix-free codes arise in the study of distributed sequences for frame synchronization. We provide a new construction of cross-bifix-free codes which generalizes the construction in Bajic (2007) to longer code lengths and to any alphabet size. The codes are shown to be nearly optimal in size. We also establish new results on Fibonacci sequences, that are used in estimating the size of the cross-bifix-free codes.
Trees with given degree sequences that have minimal subtrees
In this paper, we investigate the structures of an extremal tree which has the minimal number of subtrees in the set of all trees with the given degree sequence of a tree. In particular, the extremal trees must be caterpillar and but in general not unique. Moreover, all extremal trees with a given degree sequence $π=(d_1, ..., d_5, 1,..., 1)$ have been characterized.

This paper investigates some properties of the number of subtrees of a tree with given degree sequence. These results are used to characterize trees with the given degree sequence that have the largest number of subtrees, which generalizes the recent results of Kirk and Wang. These trees coincide with those which were proven by Wang and independently Zhang et al. to minimize the Wiener index. We also provide a partial ordering of the extremal trees with different degree sequences, some extremal results follow as corollaries.
