Mixing time upper bound for the uniformized Rosenthal walk on the special orthogonal groups
We prove that a uniformized variant of both the Rosenthal walk \cite{Rosenthal} and the Kac random walk \cite{Kac} on SO(n) mixes in $\cO(n^3)$ steps in total variation distance. The proof also extends easily to Rosenthal walk with fixed angle $θ\neq π$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first polynomial time bound for both walks. The techniques employed are mainly from representation theory of SO(n). But a crucial new ingredient is the interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of the character ratio as counting the number of particle cascade paths arising from the classical branching rules.

On discrete field theory properties of the dimer and Ising models and their conformal field theory limits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study various mathematical aspects of discrete models on graphs, specifically the Dimer and the Ising models. We focus on proving gluing formulas for individual summands of the partition function. We also obtain partial results regarding conjectured limits realized by fermions in rational conformal field theories.

Dynamical characterization of C-sets and its application
Published in Fund. Math. 216 (2012), 259-286 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we set up a general correspondence between the algebra properties of $\bN$ and the sets defined by dynamical properties. In particular, we obtain a dynamical characterization of C-sets, where C-sets are the sets satisfying the strong Central Sets Theorem. As an application, we show that Rado systems are solvable in C-sets.

Cubic Harmonics and Bernoulli Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The functions satisfying the mean value property for an n-dimensional cube are determined explicitly. This problem is related to invariant theory for a finite reflection group, especially to a system of invariant differential equations. Solving this problem is reduced to showing that a certain set of invariant polynomials forms an invariant basis. After establishing a certain summation formula over Young diagrams, the latter problem is settled by considering a recursion formula involving Bernoulli numbers. Keywords: polyhedral harmonics; cube; reflection groups; invariant theory; invariant differential equations; generating functions; partitions; Young diagrams; Bernoulli numbers.

Construction, classification and parametrization of complex Hadamard matrices
The intended purpose of this work is to provide the reader with a comprehensive, state-of-the art presentation of the theory of complex Hadamard matrices, or at least report on the very recent advances. This manuscript consists of three chapters, each describing one of three distinct faces of this field whose treatment require various mathematical tools ranging from combinatorics, functional analysis to symbolic computation. Although we firmly believe that these beautiful objects are interesting on their own and worth investigating from a purely mathematical perspective we make considerable efforts to highlight some of their applications we aware of.

Embedding cycles of given length in oriented graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kelly, Kuehn and Osthus conjectured that for any l>3 and the smallest number k>2 that does not divide l, any large enough oriented graph G with minimum indegree and minimum outdegree at least \lfloor |V(G)|/k\rfloor +1 contains a directed cycle of length l. We prove this conjecture asymptotically for the case when l is large enough compared to k and k>6. The case when k<7 was already settled asymptotically by Kelly, Kuehn and Osthus.

Monomer-dimer tatami tilings of square regions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the number of monomer-dimer tilings of an $n\times n$ square grid, with $m<n$ monomers in which no four tiles meet at any point is $m2^m+(m+1)2^{m+1}$, when $m$ and $n$ have the same parity. In addition, we present a new proof of the result that there are $n2^{n-1}$ such tilings with $n$ monomers, which divides the tilings into $n$ classes of size $2^{n-1}$. The sum of these tilings over all monomer counts has the closed form $2^{n-1}(3n-4)+2$ and, curiously, this is equal to the sum of the squares of all parts in all compositions of $n$. We also describe two algorithms and a Gray code ordering for generating the $n2^{n-1}$ tilings with $n$ monomers, which are both based on our new proof.

Optimal antithickenings of claw-free trigraphs
Chudnovsky and Seymour's structure theorem for claw-free graphs has led to a multitude of recent results that exploit two structural operations: {\em compositions of strips} and {\em thickenings}. In this paper we consider the latter, proving that every claw-free graph has a unique optimal {\em antithickening}, where our definition of {\em optimal} is chosen carefully to respect the structural foundation of the graph. Furthermore, we give an algorithm to find the optimal antithickening in $O(m^2)$ time. For the sake of both completeness and ease of proof, we prove stronger results in the more general setting of trigraphs.

Dynamic Chromatic Number of Regular Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A dynamic coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ of degree at least 2, the neighbors of $v$ receive at least 2 colors. It was conjectured [B. Montgomery. {\em Dynamic coloring of graphs}. PhD thesis, West Virginia University, 2001.] that if $G$ is a $k$-regular graph, then $χ_2(G)-χ(G)\leq 2$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a $k$-regular graph with $χ(G)\geq 4$, then $χ_2(G)\leq χ(G)+α(G^2)$. It confirms the conjecture for all regular graph $G$ with diameter at most 2 and $χ(G)\geq 4$. In fact, it shows that $χ_2(G)-χ(G)\leq 1$ provided that $G$ has diameter at most 2 and $χ(G)\geq 4$. Moreover, we show that for any $k$-regular graph $G$, $χ_2(G)-χ(G)\leq 6\ln k+2$. Also, we show that for any $n$ there exists a regular graph $G$ whose chromatic number is $n$ and $χ_2(G)-χ(G)\geq 1$. This result gives a negative answer to a conjecture of [A. Ahadi, S. Akbari, A. Dehghan, and M. Ghanbari. \newblock On the difference between chromatic number and dynamic chromatic number of graphs. \newblock {\em Discrete Math.}, In press].

On circuits and serial symmetric basis-exchange in matroids
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics. Vol. 27 (3), 1274-1286 (2013) • View Publication • BIB
The way circuits, relative to a basis, are affected as a result of exchanging a basis element, is studied. As consequences, it is shown that three consecutive symmetric exchanges exist for any two bases of a matroid, and that a full serial symmetric exchange, of length at most 6, exists for any two bases of a matroid of rank 5. A new characterization of binary matroids, related to basis-exchange, is presented.

Constant-factor approximation of domination number in sparse graphs
The k-domination number of a graph is the minimum size of a set X such that every vertex of G is in distance at most k from X. We give a linear time constant-factor approximation algorithm for k-domination number in classes of graphs with bounded expansion, which include e.g. proper minor-closed graph classes, classes closed on topological minors or classes of graphs that can be drawn on a fixed surface with bounded number of crossings on each edge. The algorithm is based on the following approximate min-max characterization. A subset A of vertices of a graph G is d-independent if the distance between each pair of vertices in A is greater than d. Note that the size of the largest 2k-independent set is a lower bound for the k-domination number. We show that every graph from a fixed class with bounded expansion contains a 2k-independent set A and a k-dominating set D such that |D|=O(|A|), and these sets can be found in linear time. For domination number (k=1) the assumptions can be relaxed, and the result holds for all graph classes with arrangeability bounded by a constant.

Asymptotics of trees with a prescribed degree sequence and applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $t$ be a rooted tree and $n_i(t)$ the number of nodes in $t$ having $i$ children. The degree sequence $(n_i(t),i\geq 0)$ of $t$ satisfies $\sum_{i\ge 0} n_i(t)=1+\sum_{i\ge 0} in_i(t)=|t|$, where $|t|$ denotes the number of nodes in $t$. In this paper, we consider trees sampled uniformly among all trees having the same degree sequence $\ds$; we write $`P_\ds$ for the corresponding distribution. Let $\ds(κ)=(n_i(κ),i\geq 0)$ be a list of degree sequences indexed by $κ$ corresponding to trees with size $\nk\to+\infty$. We show that under some simple and natural hypotheses on $(\ds(κ),κ>0)$ the trees sampled under $`P_{\ds(κ)}$ converge to the Brownian continuum random tree after normalisation by $\nk^{1/2}$. Some applications concerning Galton--Watson trees and coalescence processes are provided.

Regular graphs of large girth and arbitrary degree
Published in Combinatorica, August 2014, Volume 34, Issue 4, pp 407-426 • View Publication • BIB
For every integer d > 9, we construct infinite families {G_n}_n of d+1-regular graphs which have a large girth > log_d |G_n|, and for d large enough > 1,33 log_d |G_n|. These are Cayley graphs on PGL_2(q) for a special set of d+1 generators whose choice is related to the arithmetic of integral quaternions. These graphs are inspired by the Ramanujan graphs of Lubotzky-Philips-Sarnak and Margulis, with which they coincide when d is prime. When d is not equal to the power of an odd prime, this improves the previous construction of Imrich in 1984 where he obtained infinite families {I_n}_n of d+1-regular graphs, realized as Cayley graphs on SL_2(q), and which are displaying a girth > 0,48 log_d |I_n|. And when d is equal to a power of 2, this improves a construction by Morgenstern in 1994 where certain families {M_n}_n of 2^k+1-regular graphs were shown to have a girth > 2/3 log_d |M_n|.
The algebraic combinatorics of snakes
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory A 119 (2012), 1613-1638 • View Publication • BIB
Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.
On the partition dimension of trees
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 166 (2014) 204-209 • View Publication • BIB
Given an ordered partition $Π=\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$, the \emph{partition representation} of a vertex $v\in V$ with respect to the partition $Π$ is the vector $r(v|Π)=(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$, where $d(v,P_i)$ represents the distance between the vertex $v$ and the set $P_i$. A partition $Π$ of $V$ is a \emph{resolving partition} of $G$ if different vertices of $G$ have different partition representations, i.e., for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$ is the minimum number of sets in any resolving partition of $G$. In this paper we obtain several tight bounds on the partition dimension of trees.

Equivariant cohomology and the Varchenko-Gelfand filtration
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cohomology of the configuration space of n points in R^3 admits a symmetric group action and has been shown to be isomorphic to the regular representation. One way to prove this is by defining an S^1-action whose fixed point set is the complement of the braid arrangement and using equivariant cohomology to show that the cohomology of the configuration space is the associated graded algebra of the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we will extend this result to the setting of affine subspace arrangements coming from real hyperplane arrangements using similar methods. We also provide a presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring and extend some results to the setting of oriented matroids.

Enumeration of permutations by number of alternating runs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let R(n,k) denote the number of permutations of {1,2,...,n} with k alternating runs. We find a grammatical description of the numbers R(n,k) and then present several convolution formulas involving the generating function for the numbers R(n,k). Moreover, we establish a connection between alternating runs and Andre permutations.

Note on two results on the rainbow connection number of graphs
An edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is rainbow connected if any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. Caro et al. showed an upper bound $rc(G)\leq n-δ$ for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ$ in "On rainbow connection, Electron. J. Combin. 15(2008), R57". Recently, Shiermeyer gave it a generalization that $rc(G)\leq n- \frac{σ_2} 2$ in "Bounds for the rainbow connection number of graphs, Discuss. Math Graph Theory 31(2011), 387--395", where $σ_2$ is the minimum degree-sum. The proofs of both results are almost the same, both fix the minimum degree $δ$ and then use induction on $n$. This short note points out that this proof technique does not work rigorously. Fortunately, Caro et al's result is still true but under our improved proof. However, we do not know if Shiermeyer's result still hold.

Incidence Homology of Finite Projective Spaces
Let F* be the finite field of q elements and let P(n,q) be the projective space of dimension n-1 over F*. We construct a family H^{n}_{k,i} of combinatorial homology modules associated to P(n,q) over a coefficient field F field of characteristic p_{0}>0 co-prime to q. As FGL(n,q)-representations the modules are obtained from the permutation action of GL(n,q) on the subspaces of F*^n. We prove a branching rule for H^{n}_{k,i} and use this rule to determine these homology representations completely. The main results are a duality theorem and the complete characterisation of H^{n}_{k,i} in terms of the standard irreducibles of GL(n,q) over F and applications.
