A new family of semifields with 2 parameters
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new family of commutative semifields with two parameters is presented. Its left and middle nucleus are both determined. Furthermore, we prove that for any different pairs of parameters, these semifields are not isotopic. It is also shown that, for some special parameters, one semifield in this family can lead to two inequivalent planar functions. Finally, using similar construction, new APN functions are given.

New Bounds for the Laplacian Spectral Radius of a Signed Graph
We obtain new bounds for the Laplacian spectral radius of a signed graph. Most of these new bounds have a dependence on edge sign, unlike previously known bounds, which only depend on the underlying structure of the graph. We then use some of these bounds to obtain new bounds for the Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectral radius of an unsigned graph by signing the edges all positive and all negative, respectively.

On wreath products of cyclic schemes
We describe explicitly the algebraic structure of the Terwilliger algebra of wreath products of cyclic schemes.
The crossing number of locally twisted cubes
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$. Motivated by the recent work [Faria, L., Figueiredo, C.M.H. de, Sykora, O., Vrt'o, I.: An improved upper bound on the crossing number of the hypercube. J. Graph Theory {\bf 59}, 145--161 (2008)] which solves the upper bound conjecture on the crossing number of $n$-dimensional hypercube proposed by Erdős and Guy, we give upper and lower bounds of the crossing number of locally twisted cube, which is one of variants of hypercube.

$k$-Sum Decomposition of Strongly Unimodular Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Networks are frequently studied algebraically through matrices. In this work, we show that networks may be studied in a more abstract level using results from the theory of matroids by establishing connections to networks by decomposition results of matroids. First, we present the implications of the decomposition of regular matroids to networks and related classes of matrices, and secondly we show that strongly unimodular matrices are closed under $k$-sums for $k=1,2$ implying a decomposition into highly connected network-representing blocks, which are also shown to have a special structure.

Stationary distribution and cover time of random walks on random digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study properties of a simple random walk on the random digraph D_{n,p} when np={d\log n},\; d>1. We prove that whp the stationary probability pi_v of a vertex v is asymptotic to deg^-(v)/m where deg^-(v) is the in-degree of v and m=n(n-1)p is the expected number of edges of D_{n,p}. If d=d(n) tends to infinity with n, the stationary distribution is asymptotically uniform whp. Using this result we prove that, for d>1, whp the cover time of D_{n,p} is asymptotic to d\log (d/(d-1))n\log n. If d=d(n) tends to infinity with n, then the cover time is asymptotic to n\log n.

Conjectures and results on $x^2$ mod $p^2$ with $4p=x^2+dy^2$
Published in in: Number Theory and Related Area (eds., Y. Ouyang, C. Xing, F. Xu and P. Zhang), Adv. Lect. Math. 27, Higher Education Press & International Press, Beijing-Boston, 2013, pp. 149-197 • Search Publication
Given a squarefree positive integer $d$, we want to find integers (or rational numbers with denominators not divisible by large primes) $a_0,a_1,a_2,\ldots$ such that for sufficiently large primes $p$ we have $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}a_k\equiv x^2-2p$ (mod $p^2$) if $4p=x^2+dy^2$ (and $4\nmid x$ if $d=1$), and $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}a_k\equiv 0$ (mod $p^2$) if $(\frac{-d}p)=-1$. In this paper we give a survey of conjectures and results on this topic and point out the connection between this problem and series for $1/π$.

Graph reductions, binary rank, and pivots in gene assembly
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 159 (2011), no. 17, 2117-2134 • View Publication • BIB
We describe a graph reduction operation, generalizing three graph reduction operations related to gene assembly in ciliates. The graph formalization of gene assembly considers three reduction rules, called the positive rule, double rule, and negative rule, each of which removes one or two vertices from a graph. The graph reductions we define consist precisely of all compositions of these rules. We study graph reductions in terms of the adjacency matrix of a graph over the finite field with two elements, and show that they are path invariant, in the sense that the result of a sequence of graph reductions depends only on the vertices removed. The binary rank of a graph is the rank of its adjacency matrix over the finite field with two elements. We show that the binary rank of a graph determines how many times the negative rule is applied in any sequence of positive, double, and negative rules reducing the graph to the empty graph, resolving two open problems posed by Harju, Li, and Petre. We also demonstrate the close relation between graph reductions and the matrix pivot operation, both of which can be studied in terms of the poset of subsets of vertices of a graph that can be removed by a graph reduction.

Holes and a chordal cut in a graph
A set $X$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a {\em clique cut} of $G$ if the subgraph of $G$ induced by $X$ is a complete graph and the number of connected components of $G-X$ is greater than that of $G$. A clique cut $X$ of $G$ is called a {\em chordal cut} of $G$ if there exists a union $U$ of connected components of $G-X$ such that $G[U \cup X]$ is a chordal graph. In this paper, we consider the following problem: Given a graph $G$, does the graph have a chordal cut? We show that $K_{2,2,2}$-free hole-edge-disjoint graphs have chordal cuts if they satisfy a certain condition.

Some other algebraic properties of folded hypercubes
We construct explicity the automorphism group of the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ of dimension $n>3$, as a semidirect product of $N$ by $M$, where $N$ is isomorphic to the Abelian group $Z_2^n$, and $M$ is isomorphic to $Sym(n+1)$, the symmetric group of degree $n+1$, then we will show that the folded hypercube $FQ_n$ is a symmetric graph.

Algebras from surfaces without punctures
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new class of finite dimensional gentle algebras, the surface algebras, which are constructed from an unpunctured Riemann surface with boundary and marked points by introducing cuts in internal triangles of an arbitrary triangulation of the surface. We show that surface algebras are endomorphism algebras of partial cluster-tilting objects in generalized cluster categories, we compute the invariant of Avella-Alaminos and Geiss for surface algebras and we provide a geometric model for the module category of surface algebras.

Large chromatic number and Ramsey graphs
Let Q(n,c) denote the minimum clique size an n-vertex graph can have if its chromatic number is c. Using Ramsey graphs we give an exact, albeit implicit, formula for the case c is at least (n+3)/2.

On a uniformly distributed phenomenon in matrix groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that a classical uniformly distributed phenomenon for an element and its inverse in ($\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^{*}$ also exists in $\textrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$. A $\textrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ analogy of the uniform distribution on modular hyperbolas has also been considered.

On the Number of Facets of Polytopes Representing Comparative Probability Orders
Published in Order 30 (2013), no. 3, 749-761 • View Publication • BIB
Fine and Gill (1973) introduced the geometric representation for those comparative probability orders on n atoms that have an underlying probability measure. In this representation every such comparative probability order is represented by a region of a certain hyperplane arrangement. Maclagan (1999) asked how many facets a polytope, which is the closure of such a region, might have. We prove that the maximal number of facets is at least F_{n+1}, where F_n is the nth Fibonacci number. We conjecture that this lower bound is sharp. Our proof is combinatorial and makes use of the concept of flippable pairs introduced by Maclagan. We also obtain an upper bound which is not too far from the lower bound.

Simplified existence theorems on all fractional [a,b]-factors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with order $n$ and let $g, f : V (G)\rightarrow N$ such that $g(v)\leq f(v)$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We say that $G$ has all fractional $(g, f)$-factors if $G$ has a fractional $p$-factor for every $p: V (G)\rightarrow N$ such that $g(v)\leq p(v)\leq f (v)$ for every $v\in V(G)$. Let $a<b$ be two positive integers. %and $G$ \textbf{a graph} of order $n$ sufficiently large %for $a$ and $b$. If $g\equiv a$, $f\equiv b$ and $G$ has all fractional $(g,f)$-factors, then we say that $G$ has all fractional $[a,b]$-factors. Suppose that $n$ is sufficiently large for $a$ and $b$. This paper contains two results on the existence of all $(g,f)$-factors of graphs. First, we derive from Anstee's fractional $(g,f)$-factor theorem a similar characterization for the property of all fractional $(g,f)$-factors. Second, we show that $G$ has all fractional $[a, b]$-factors if the minimum degree is at least $\frac{1}{4a}((a+b-1)^2+4b)$ and every pair of nonadjacent vertices has cardinality of the neighborhood union at least $bn/(a + b)$. These lower bounds are sharp.

Ollivier's Ricci curvature, local clustering and curvature dimension inequalities on graphs
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 51 (2014), no. 2, 300-322 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we explore the relationship between one of the most elementary and important properties of graphs, the presence and relative frequency of triangles, and a combinatorial notion of Ricci curvature. We employ a definition of generalized Ricci curvature proposed by Ollivier in a general framework of Markov processes and metric spaces and applied in graph theory by Lin-Yau. In analogy with curvature notions in Riemannian geometry, we interpret this Ricci curvature as a control on the amount of overlap between neighborhoods of two neighboring vertices. It is therefore naturally related to the presence of triangles containing those vertices, or more precisely, the local clustering coefficient, that is, the relative proportion of connected neighbors among all the neighbors of a vertex. This suggests to derive lower Ricci curvature bounds on graphs in terms of such local clustering coefficients. We also study curvature dimension inequalities on graphs, building upon previous work of several authors.

Languages invariant under more symmetries: overlapping factors versus palindromic richness
Published in Discrete Math. 313 (2013), 2432-2445 • View Publication • BIB
Factor complexity $\mathcal{C}$ and palindromic complexity $\mathcal{P}$ of infinite words with language closed under reversal are known to be related by the inequality $\mathcal{P}(n) + \mathcal{P}(n+1) \leq 2 + \mathcal{C}(n+1)-\mathcal{C}(n)$ for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$\,. Word for which the equality is attained for any $n$ is usually called rich in palindromes. In this article we study words whose languages are invariant under a finite group $G$ of symmetries. For such words we prove a stronger version of the above inequality. We introduce notion of $G$-palindromic richness and give several examples of $G$-rich words, including the Thue-Morse sequence as well.

On Primitive Words I: A New Algorithm
Let $F_k$ be the free group on $k$ generators, and let $H\le J\le \F_k$ be subgroups of finite rank. We present a new elementary algorithm to determine whether $H$ is a free factor of $J$. In particular, this algorithm can determine whether a given element $w\in F_k$ is primitive, i.e. whether it belongs to some basis of $F_k$.
On Han's Hook Length Formulas for Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Han obtained two hook length formulas for binary trees and asked for combinatorial proofs. One of Han's formulas has been generalized to k-ary trees by Yang. Sagan has found a probabilistic proof of Yang's extension. We give combinatorial proofs of Yang's formula for k-ary trees and the other formula of Han for binary trees. Our bijections are based on the structure of k-ary trees with staircase labelings.

Integrability of Hurwitz Partition Functions. I. Summary
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 045209 • View Publication • BIB
Partition functions often become τ-functions of integrable hierarchies, if they are considered dependent on infinite sets of parameters called time variables. The Hurwitz partition functions Z = \sum_R d_R^{2-k}χ_R(t^{(1)})...χ_R(t^{(k)})\exp(\sum_n ξ_nC_R(n)) depend on two types of such time variables, t and ξ. KP/Toda integrability in t requires that k\leq 2 and also that C_R(n) are selected in a rather special way, in particular the naive cut-and-join operators are not allowed for n>2. Integrability in ξfurther restricts the choice of C_R(n), forbidding, for example, the free cumulants. It also requires that k\leq 1. The quasiclassical integrability (the WDVV equations) is naturally present in ξvariables, but also requires a careful definition of the generating function.
