Some examples of sets of large exponential sums
Let $A$ be a subset of $\mathbb{Z} / N\mathbb{Z}$ and let $\mathcal{R}$ be the set of large Fourier coefficients of $A$. Properties of $\mathcal{R}$ have been studied in works of M.-- C. Chang, B. Green and the author. In the paper we obtain some new results on sets of large exponential sums.

Stanley's character polynomials and coloured factorizations in the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Pfaffians and Representations of the Symmetric Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pfaffians of matrices with entries z[i,j]/(x\_i+x\_j), or determinants of matrices with entries z[i,j]/(x\_i-x\_j), where the antisymmetrical indeterminates z[i,j] satisfy the Plücker relations, can be identified with a trace in an irreducible representation of a product of two symmetric groups. Using Young's orthogonal bases, one can write explicit expressions of such Pfaffians and determinants, and recover in particular the evaluation of Pfaffians which appeared in the recent literature.

Component sizes of the random graph outside the scaling window
We provide simple proofs describing the behavior of the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p) outside of the scaling window, p={1+\eps(n) \over n} where \eps(n) tends to 0, but \eps(n)n^{1/3} tends to \infty.

Reconstructing compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of reconstructing compositions of an integer from their subcompositions, which was raised by Raykova (albeit disguised as a question about layered permutations). We show that every composition w of n\ge 3k+1 can be reconstructed from its set of k-deletions, i.e., the set of all compositions of n-k contained in w. As there are compositions of 3k with the same set of k-deletions, this result is best possible.

A combinatorial reciprocity theorem for hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a nonnegative integer $m$ and a finite collection ${\mathcal A}$ of linear forms on ${\mathbb Q}^d$, the arrangement of affine hyperplanes in ${\mathbb Q}^d$ defined by the equations $α(x) = k$ for $α\in {\mathcal A}$ and integers $k \in [-m, m]$ is denoted by ${\mathcal A}^m$. It is proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of ${\mathcal A}^m$ are quasi-polynomials in $m$ and that they satisfy a simple combinatorial reciprocity law.

We show that, given any $n$ and $α$, every embedding of any sufficiently large complete graph in $\mathbb{R}^3$ contains an oriented link with components $Q_1$, ..., $Q_n$ such that for every $i\not =j$, $|\lk(Q_i,Q_j)|\geqα$ and $|a_2(Q_i)|\geqα$, where $a_{2}(Q_i)$ denotes the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial of $Q_i$.

Happy endings for flip graphs
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry 1(1):3-28, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the triangulations of a finite point set form a flip graph that can be embedded isometrically into a hypercube, if and only if the point set has no empty convex pentagon. Point sets of this type include convex subsets of lattices, points on two lines, and several other infinite families. As a consequence, flip distance in such point sets can be computed efficiently.
Three Counterexamples on Semigraphoids
Semigraphoids are combinatorial structures that arise in statistical learning theory. They are equivalent to convex rank tests and to polyhedral fans that coarsen the reflection arrangement of the symmetric group. We resolve two problems on semigraphoids posed in Studeny's book, and we answer a related question by Postnikov, Reiner, and Williams on generalized permutohedra. We also study the semigroup and the toric ideal associated with semigraphoids.
Chain Graphs have Unbounded Readability
A triangle-free graph $G$ is called read-$k$ when there exists a monotone Boolean formula $φ$ whose variables are the vertices of $G$ and whose minterms are precisely the edges of $G$, such that no variable occurs more than $k$ times in $φ$. The smallest such $k$ is called the readability of $G$. We exhibit a very simple class of bipartite chain graphs on $2n$ vertices with readability $Ω(\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}})$.

The mixing time of the giant component of a random graph
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 45:3 (2014), 383-407 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the total variation mixing time of the simple random walk on the giant component of supercritical Erdos-Renyi graphs is log^2 n. This statement was only recently proved, independently, by Fountoulakis and Reed. Our proof follows from a structure result for these graphs which is interesting in its own right. We show that these graphs are "decorated expanders" - an expander glued to graphs whose size has constant expectation and exponential tail, and such that each vertex in the expander is glued to no more than a constant number of decorations.

The number of permutations with a given number of sequences
P(n,s) denotes the number of permutations of 1,2,...n that have exactly s sequences. Canfield and Wilf [math.CO/0609704] recently showed that P(n,s) can be written as a sum of s polynomials in n. We determine these polynomials explicitly and also obtain explicit expressions for P(n,s) and its fixed-s generating function u_s(x).

A generalization of Pardue's formula
Published in Bull. Math. Soc. Sci. Math. Roumanie, 49 (97)(4) (2006), pag. 315-334 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce a new class of monomial ideals, called $d$-fixed ideals, which generalize the class of $p$-Borel ideals and show how some results for $p$-Borel ideals can be transfered to this new class. In particular, we give the form of a principal $d$-fixed ideal and we compute the socle of factors of these ideals. This allowed us to give a generalization of Pardue's formula,i.e. a formula of the regularity for a principal $d$-fixed ideal.

Permutations avoiding a nonconsecutive instance of a 2- or 3-letter pattern
We count permutations avoiding a nonconsecutive instance of a two- or three-letter pattern, that is, the pattern may occur but only as consecutive entries in the permutation. Two-letter patterns give rise to the Fibonacci numbers. The counting sequences for the two representative three-letter patterns, 321 and 132, have respective generating functions (1+x^2)(C(x)-1)/(1+x+x^2-x C(x)) and C(x+x^3) where C(x) is the generating function for the Catalan numbers.

Ehrhart Polynomial Roots and Stanley's Non-negativity Theorem
Published in Integer points in polyhedra--geometry, number theory, representation theory, algebra, optimization, statistics, 67--78, Contemp. Math., 452, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley's non-negativity theorem is at the heart of many of the results in Ehrhart theory. In this paper, we analyze the root behavior of general polynomials satisfying the conditions of Stanley's theorem and compare this to the known root behavior of Ehrhart polynomials. We provide a possible counterexample to a conjecture of the second author, M. Beck, J. De Loera, J. Pfeifle, and R. Stanley, and contribute some experimental data as well.
Binomial D-modules
Published in Duke Math. J. 151, no. 3 (2010), 385-429 • View PublicationBIB
We study quotients of the Weyl algebra by left ideals whose generators consist of an arbitrary Z^d-graded binomial ideal I along with Euler operators defined by the grading and a parameter in C^d. We determine the parameters for which these D-modules (i) are holonomic (equivalently, regular holonomic, when I is standard-graded); (ii) decompose as direct sums indexed by the primary components of I; and (iii) have holonomic rank greater than the generic rank. In each of these three cases, the parameters in question are precisely those outside of a certain explicitly described affine subspace arrangement in C^d. In the special case of Horn hypergeometric D-modules, when I is a lattice basis ideal, we furthermore compute the generic holonomic rank combinatorially and write down a basis of solutions in terms of associated A-hypergeometric functions. This study relies fundamentally on the explicit lattice point description of the primary components of an arbitrary binomial ideal in characteristic zero, which we derive in our companion article arxiv:0803.3846.

Packing k-edge Trees in Graphs of Restricted Vertex Degrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let v(G) be the number of vertices and t(G,k) the maximum number of disjoint k-edge trees in G. In this paper we show that (a1) if G is a graph with every vertex of degree at least two and at most s, where s > 3, then t(G,2) is at least v(G)/(s+1), (a2) if G is a graph with every vertex of degree at least two and at most 3 and G has no 5-vertex components, then t(G,2) is at least v(G)/4, (a3) if G is a graph with every vertex of degree at least one and at most s and G has no k--vertex component, where k >1 and s > 2, then t(G,k) is at least (v(G) - k)/(sk - k +1), and (a4) the above bounds are attained for infinitely many connected graphs. Our proofs provide polynomial time algorithms for finding the corresponding packings in a graph. Keywords: subgraph packing, 2-edge and k-edge paths, k-edge trees, polynomial time approximation algorithms.

An Efficient Approximation of the Traveling Salesman Polytope Using Lifting Methods
For the Traveling Salesman Polytope on n cities T_n, we construct its approximation Q_k, k=1, 2, . . ., n^(1/3) using a projection of a polytope whose number of facets is polynomial in n (of degree linear in k). We show that T_n is contained in Q_k for each k, and that the scaling of Q_k by k/n+O(1/n) is contained in T_n for each k. We show that certain facets of T_n lie on the boundary of Q_k.
MV3: A new word based stream cipher using rapid mixing and revolving buffers
Published • View PublicationBIB
MV3 is a new word based stream cipher for encrypting long streams of data. A direct adaptation of a byte based cipher such as RC4 into a 32- or 64-bit word version will obviously need vast amounts of memory. This scaling issue necessitates a look for new components and principles, as well as mathematical analysis to justify their use. Our approach, like RC4's, is based on rapidly mixing random walks on directed graphs (that is, walks which reach a random state quickly, from any starting point). We begin with some well understood walks, and then introduce nonlinearity in their steps in order to improve security and show long term statistical correlations are negligible. To minimize the short term correlations, as well as to deter attacks using equations involving successive outputs, we provide a method for sequencing the outputs derived from the walk using three revolving buffers. The cipher is fast -- it runs at a speed of less than 5 cycles per byte on a Pentium IV processor. A word based cipher needs to output more bits per step, which exposes more correlations for attacks. Moreover we seek simplicity of construction and transparent analysis. To meet these requirements, we use a larger state and claim security corresponding to only a fraction of it. Our design is for an adequately secure word-based cipher; our very preliminary estimate puts the security close to exhaustive search for keys of size < 256 bits.

The computational complexity of convex bodies
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss how well a given convex body B in a real d-dimensional vector space V can be approximated by a set X for which the membership question: ``given an x in V, does x belong to X?'' can be answered efficiently (in time polynomial in d). We discuss approximations of a convex body by an ellipsoid, by an algebraic hypersurface, by a projection of a polytope with a controlled number of facets, and by a section of the cone of positive semidefinite quadratic forms. We illustrate some of the results on the Traveling Salesman Polytope, an example of a complicated convex body studied in combinatorial optimization.
